China's claim was they have ancient maps showing they own the area though until this day they have not shown any map. I believe the oldest map that China has shown so far was a post WW2 map.

That might not be true. There was a slave from Malacca named Enrique of Malacca who was with the crew. He would have been the first to circumnavigate the globe.

Yet they call this a Portuguesse acchievement, and in the end of the video make no mention to ElCano... and instead of him mention of Drake... who made this 60 years later... mmmmm classic.
Let me explain why Magellan is credited with circumnavigating the world before Elcano. Before sailing for Spain, Magellan (Magalhães) had sailed to the far East (Molucas, so-called "spice islands") with Portugal, (there, he acquired a slave whom he called Henrique), he then sailed back to Portugal and then went in service of Spain in his most famed voyage, reaching the far East from the opposite side and completing the first circumnavigation along with Henrique, who survived the return trip with Elcano. Thus, Magalhães and Henrique were the first two men to circumnavigate the world. All 360º of it. Got it?
Magellan put himself in between a Rajah and a Datu's squabble, thinking his leadership and technology was superior. Pride and ambition led to his demise.
Filipino here, though spain colonised this ancient malay archipelago and committed atrocities to the locals I personaly couldn't deny the fact that they did an amazing job because of em they were able to unite all the tribes in the islands and created a new nation, magellans exploits is one if not the greatest leap in the history of our species such courage all this people have to venture into the unknown and make history. Next step MARS....
No it's Not. You people don't have any clue how many of our Ancestors were massacred, lives destroyed, enslaved in their own land for the 3 G's (GOD, GLORY, GOLD). Spices are just the propaganda/fake news.
Juan Sebastián Elcano was the first to circumnavigate the Earth. Magellan was killed in Mactan, Phillipine islands. Elcano's success made possible that Magellan is known in history.
@@thalesbernardomendes8949And he died in the middle of the trouble. Elcano was the captain wha decided to go to west abd not return to America (original plan)
The first european to circumnavigate the globe is NOT Ferdinand Magellan but Sebastian Del Cano, the leader of the only ship that returned to Spain (Victoria). Magellan went Westwards to reach East but never came back.. Elcano went with him then returned going West. Technically, he was the first.
Enrique de Malacca was the first man to circumnavigate the world, he was with the Magellan voyage to the Philippines, named as Philippines later, and acted as Magellan’s interpreter in Cebu as he speak the Cebu dialect. Note research it.
Simple History I like your videos. Are you going to do an explorer series? Vasco de Gama, Coranado and De Soto have my vote if you're vacillating over which to do next. Thank you.
First circumnavigator? Correction: Ferdinand Magellan DID NOT circumnavigate the world. He died in the Philippines and hid body was kept by the natives as a war trophy. The first person who circumnavigated the world is Sebastian Elcano, who took command of the ship Victoria back to Spain. Another contender is Enrique de Malacca, Magellan's slave, who purportedly came from Southeast Asia.
The Spanish always say the PORTUGUESE Magalhaes did not finish because they want to minimize the role of him. Yes, Elcano finished the Journey breaking the Tordesillas treaty but Magalhaes was the 1st to do the circunavigation because he already had done half of the Journey many years before in the Portuguese armada to Indonesia. So, the return voyage was not necessary for him to be the 1st ....I know, its hard to diggest, but it wad a Portuguese who did it 1st
There was no such thing as a Philippines, back during that time. Lapu-Lapu didn't fight for the Philippines, he fought for his island. Philippines didn't exist back then.
We should go back to the time of lapu2x when there was no philippines, so sick of tagalog president that only drags us down to poverty. Duterte cannot solve this for sure if there is no federalism.
Magellan did not circumnavigate the world and he never had any intention to do it. He just wanted to go to the Spice islands and back, turning around America. It was Elcano who took the decission to continue Westwards and completed the circumnavigation. Stop giving Magellan credit for something he never did or intended to do
4:35 - Lapu-lapu was the ruler of Mactan. The local chief who "asked Magellan for help in defeating this rival" was Humabon, the ruler of Sugbu/Cebu (if I'm not mistaken).
The first circunavegation was completed not by Magallanes, it was Juan Sebastian El cano and the 18 members of the crew. Magallanes was not a good manager and had problems with people. JS El Cano deal with adversity better and finish the job. Very interesting travel.
For those wondering why El Cano’s voyage home never stopped on Africa despite the hunger, was because the Portuguese occupied the coastal region and were in conflict with Spain.
What would the punishment have been simply for being Spanish though? Seems a hard decision to have most of your crew starve to death rather than spend a few months in a prison and have your ship confiscated.
I have read several books on the subject... It seems that, once they spotted the South African coast, El Cano made several raiding parties ashore, each side of the Cape of Good Hope, to try to find food... But all they found was fresh water and fish, but no fruit to combat the scurvy... So they continued to Cape Verde..
It was Sebastian Elcano who made the entire journey. Yes, Magellan started it but he was later on killed by a native chieftain in one of the islands of the Philippines. It was Sebastian Elcano who continued the journey. Together with a few of his remaining crewmen, they returned to Spain.
These smooth brain flat Earthers will just bring up the UN Flag model....even though it would contradict the voyage time, and extend their voyage by a year or two.

@@carldadole8932 By killinng the Portuguese, that meant that a Spaniard was in charge of the crew and so it was a Spaniard who went around the world first, not a Portuguese guy. This means that Lapu Lapu unwittingly gave Spain glory. :-)
Magellan was nationalized Spanish. Spain finances the trip. The Portuguese tried to kill Magellan in Spain and on the trip. Magallanes dies in the Philippines, and Juan Sebastian Elcano, with 18 sailors, completes the trip. The sailors are: 11 Spaniards, 4 Greeks, 2 Italians 1 German and 1 Portuguese.
A couple other things... 1) In the mutiny at Puerto San Julian, some of the mutineers were actually drawn and quartered. Quite a bit more intense than the quick sword to the neck. 2) In the Philippines they learned about some freaky sexual practices. Bergreen's book shares the details. 3) They had a Malay (or Indonesian) slave onboard, known as Enrique of Malacca. He was a pretty good translator when they all arrived in Asia. Since he was ripped from his homeland as a teenager, then brought to Spain and then forced to cross the Atlantic and Pacific, by the time he reach the Straits of Malacca he became the first person to circumnavigate the world.
@@Oscar-ss3dr Pigafetta's original diary isn't available. The earliest source we have for his writing is a French version. It's believed that the French removed every mention of Elcano on purpose. This belief is solidified because some of the names are confused and don't make sense.

*FACT:* Juan Sebastián Elcano (1486/1487 - 4 August 1526) was a Spanish explorer who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth. After Magellan's death in the Philippines, Elcano took command of the carrack Victoria from the Moluccas to Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Spain. Hence, Magellan was NOT the first to circumnavigate the globe as is constantly wrongly repeated in history books!
Magellan's goal was to find a route to the Moluccas or Spice Islands from the west and return via the Pacific Ocean, not to circumnavigate the world. He died in the Cebu Philippines before reaching the Moluccas. At this point there were two ships left, Elcano took command of the nao Victoria and Gonzalo Gómez de Espinosa of the nao Trinidad, both reached the Molucca Islands completing the expedition's objective. Gonzalo Gomez de Espinosa decided to return through the Pacific to Panama but were captured by the Portuguese. Elcano decided to return to Spain through the Indian Ocean, which meant avoiding the Portuguese routes and not being able to freely enter the ports to avoid being captured by the Portuguese, and the king of Portugal sent a fleet to stop the Spanish expedition. Not being able to stock up in the ports, they ran out of food. They only stopped at Cape Verde out of desperation and the Portuguese captured several prisoners on land and pursued the Victoria, which was able to escape. Enrique de Malacca is only documented to have traveled from Malacca to Portugal and from Spain to Cebu, there are about 2500km between Cebu and Malacca so he did not go around the world. Only Juan Sebastian Elcano and the 17 men under his command can say and prove that they were the first to circumnavigate the world and they did it in spite of storms and the efforts of Portugal to make the Spanish expedition fail.
WELL SAID. And The Spanish were protesting that ONLY MAGELLAN and his Portugese servants in his ship were KEEPING ALL the maps for the route which MAGELLAN was supposed to give TO ALL CAPTAINS, BUT HE KEPT THEM ALL INSTEAD. All maps and charts for the route for all ships, not only one is a standard needed requirement on a ships fleet. On aviation we do the same. Im a pilot since 1980. Magellan was, like Columbus was too, a liar looking for self glory using Spains good will to do dangerous missions other countries didnt want to do. Lots of lies about how good he was. He was a liar, a swindler and a murderer of the ones that exposed him. He died due his tricks and lies didnt work in Cebu. DelCano was the best navigator and the first to circumnavigate the world along with the other spanish.
I feel split up of who is Magellan is he tyrant or a hero 3 years sailing the sea with no provisions , imagine the adventures and mysteries he discovered. The dedication he showed is remarkable, he would do anything to complete the mission.
trebledc yea in my eyes I think Magellan was a hero since he circumnavigated the world, but even tho he died he had a good idea and he and his crew was determined even tho only few survived that just speaks volumes as to how determined they were to survive and imagine the stories they told, they were literally the first to circumnavigate the world.

So: The ships were spanish, the crew was spanish, They worked for the King of Spain, the money and materials were spanish, the guy who actually manage to circunnavigate it from the beggining to the end was the Spanish ElCano, because Magallanes died in the middle and didnt manage to really circunnavigate the earth... Yet they call this a Portuguesse acchievement, and in the end of the video make no mention to ElCano... and instead of him mention of Drake... who made this 60 years later... mmmmm classic.
They actually mentioned elcano tho
Got it?

He was somewhat successful explorer and proved the world is not flat. Sounds like a hero to me given the conditions of sea fairing back in those days.
