It was said that, Juan Sebastian de Elcano, a guy that went on a journey with Magellan, was really the one that had the first circumnavigation on the planet. Elcano was onboard during the whole journey of Magellan. As Magellan died in the Philippines, Elcano took place and went back to Spain.
I would say that IN LIFE Magalhães was the First to surround earth. Cause before arrives phillippines by pacific ocean, he travelled to Maluku Islands by indic ocean. He included recognizes phillippines when they arrived there, and only when he said that the spanishes decided to kill him only to wont see another portuguese making history in front of spain.
Magellan brought him most of the way there, though.
Elcano was the first to circumnavigate the world in one journey. Magellan was the first to circumnavigate the world on account of his first journey and his incomplete second journey (because he died).
Your right.
Elcano was the first

Gotta agree w sick revolting piss
In Spain there no pubs, there are "bares" that are quite similar. In fact, in Spain we have the original diary of one of the survivors. I've a digital copy and it's just like an adventure novel! In addition to sailing all around the wordl they also discovered new species, like penguins. It's quite a thrilling storie!
I'm more amazed in how they're good at trading and communicating with other foreign lands and they even join their war.
A few interesting facts:
1. The ships given for the voyage were small because the Spanish government was not optimistic about the success of this voyage that they didn't want to invest so much in it.
2. Magellan had a blood compact with two datus--Datu Kulambu and Datu Humabon, they were the first converts to Christianity as a result of Magellan "miraculously" healing the sick nephew of Datu Humabon.
3. Magellan was Portuguese and most of the members of the crew didn't trust him. Those who joined the voyage were ordinary folks who had nothing to lose--some Italians were there as well.
4. The actual person who circumnavigated the globe was Elcano, captain of Victoria, along with the crew that included Pigafetta, the chronicler.
and one of the people there in magelan killed him not Lapu-Lapu but because of historical reasons he gave the one who kill magelan and that is Lapu-Lapu
@Matthew Magcale And you were there to claim that . Weren't you?

Magellan did circumnavigate. He's been spending years sailing East from Spain to Southeast Asia. When that expedition happened, he sail west to arrive in east. He died in Philiipines but when you look in map, moluka island and Philippines are almost found on the same position so it's good to say that Magellan had circumnavigate the world

Vincent Malab he was the one who captained them back home so he gets the glory and recognition i guess lol
1st placer your right, in the past not even today the recognition sometimes are only given to the high ranking man in the group. Maybe in Spain the other crewmen of Sebastian Elcano alongside with him are famous and well known.
That might not be true. There was a slave from Malacca named Enrique of Malacca who was with the crew. He would have been the first to circumnavigate the globe.
All of you are forgetting (or just ignoring) that Magellan served the Portuguese Crown before to depart to Spain and there he sailed from West to East. So, despite to must just few thousand kilometers you must give him some credit.

You really believe that you (i.e. Phillipinese people) have got civilized by the Spanish and becoming a catholic nation is an upgrade in terms of culture. There was Islam, there was Hindu influences and very importantly Buddhisim in that part of the world and IMO they are in no way less civilized than catholicism. The asian culture by itself is amazing, quite advanced and very varied and we don't need Roman Catholicism in Asia to civilize the asian people.
So: The ships were spanish, the crew was spanish, They worked for the King of Spain, the money and materials were spanish, the guy who actually manage to circunnavigate it from the beggining to the end was the Spanish ElCano, because Magallanes died in the middle and didnt manage to really circunnavigate the earth... Yet they call this a Portuguesse acchievement, and in the end of the video make no mention to ElCano... and instead of him mention of Drake... who made this 60 years later... mmmmm classic.
They actually mentioned elcano tho
Let me explain why Magellan is credited with circumnavigating the world before Elcano. Before sailing for Spain, Magellan (Magalhães) had sailed to the far East (Molucas, so-called "spice islands") with Portugal, (there, he acquired a slave whom he called Henrique), he then sailed back to Portugal and then went in service of Spain in his most famed voyage, reaching the far East from the opposite side and completing the first circumnavigation along with Henrique, who survived the return trip with Elcano. Thus, Magalhães and Henrique were the first two men to circumnavigate the world. All 360º of it. Got it?

3) They had a Malay (or Indonesian) slave onboard, known as Enrique of Malacca. He was a pretty good translator when they all arrived in Asia. Since he was ripped from his homeland as a teenager, then brought to Spain and then forced to cross the Atlantic and Pacific, by the time he reach the Straits of Malacca he became the first person to circumnavigate the world.
It’s interesting to see what each creator will leave out in their telling of this Saga or any Saga. You Kinda have to watch them all to get a full picture.
Interviewer: so many lifes, why did you do this?
Magallanes: some smelly leafs
magallanes is a street in the philippines
You know exactly what these colonizers want. It's 3 G's ( God, Glory, Gold). The leaf is just a propaganda.
@@maayongaga729 are you dumb

Hey it should be leaves not leafs
This will trigger flat earthers
but nasa has been faking the moon landing... all of the space is cgi... hows that... have we really been in space?
how is it that 1980 technology managed to reach space and moon but 21st century tech cant?
why is it that you believe in aliens but you dont believe in God?
Richard Casterly
are you sure that God doesnt exist because of zero evidence?
then, the big bang is also a hoax, right?
since, you cant prove what caused it... i mean, there was nothing, right (in space)? and then, Booom! the big bang... something must have caused it, right?
"the absence of evidence is not the evidence of the absent." - einstein (not sure if it is his quote)
its funny that you didnt chose to answer the other 2 of my "naive" question...
Richard Casteryly
the different between God and science is that, you can put FAITH in God, but you cant in the latter, because that would become "religion" and we know you hate that term...
Imagine being on a wooden ship back then and trying to cross the Atlantic in stormy weather, the balls these men had were on another level.
SPANISH...
Thank You for this!!
Juan Sebastián Elcano was the first to circumnavigate the Earth. Magellan was killed in Mactan, Phillipine islands. Elcano's success made possible that Magellan is known in history.

Explain this flat earthers!
actually they went incircle thinking they went round the earth, this voyage proves nothing but intresting journey.
These smooth brain flat Earthers will just bring up the UN Flag model....even though it would contradict the voyage time, and extend their voyage by a year or two.
It's not flat
@@neltfelix7221 if the earth is flat we would have been dead for centuries by astroids and of course of you'll say the other planets will protect us WE ARE FLAT so no one will protect us perhaps if you say the earth is flat Your a sinner against god creation
Great video, thanks 👍
Thank you for this wonderful video.
I lived in Mactan.
This channel is the best
Few corrections :
Magellan was Portugese in origin, but 'naturalized' Spanish (is like nowadays to have the Spanish citizenship). This was a process where the person has to live at least 1.5 years in Spain. So technically speaking, all the people in the all 5 ships were spanish loyal to the King of Spain. To say something different is like to say Apple is a Syrian company (the father of Steve Jobs was Syrian) and Tesla is a sudafrican company because Elon Musk born there.
Despite all of them were 'nationalized' Spanish, in origin there was many Greeks, Italian and Germans. Like in silicon Valley today. The ideas, resources and technology was provided by the most powerful empire back then: the Spanish Empire
Is funny how the video says 'European exploration' to avoid to say 'spanish' but when there was a revolt and part of the crew wanted to come back, then suddenly all were "spanish". So adventure/research=European. Coward=Spanish....
The second circumnavigation of the world was also Spanish.
Magellan never did the circumnavigation of the world. It was Juan Sebastián Elcano but somehow is only named ONCE. Even the title of this video is about Magellan.
Nonius9 if Spanish speaking people spoke to Portuguese speaking people they would understand what the Spanish speaking person say, but not the other way around. Maybe in writing Spanish and Portuguese are almost similar. Hmm maybe thats why Filipinos have different words and pronunciations.
Not all of them, they captured portoguese people on the port of brazil.
Salty lol

Iberians didn't need to naturalize back then. They were considered the same. Where did u here this 1.5 years bullshit?
cause juan sebastian elcano carried on megallan's name and legacy
Cannot imagine the horrors the 18 men had to live with remembering for the remaining years of the lives
Thank you so much!

Is this your longest video Simple History?
Yes apart from the compilation
Simple History I like your videos. Are you going to do an explorer series? Vasco de Gama, Coranado and De Soto have my vote if you're vacillating over which to do next. Thank you.
do katipunan (it's my profile)
Philipinesball go look for stuff in the net.
First circumnavigator? Correction: Ferdinand Magellan DID NOT circumnavigate the world. He died in the Philippines and hid body was kept by the natives as a war trophy. The first person who circumnavigated the world is Sebastian Elcano, who took command of the ship Victoria back to Spain. Another contender is Enrique de Malacca, Magellan's slave, who purportedly came from Southeast Asia.
I have a quiz tomorrow base on this thank you so much ❤️
4:35 - Lapu-lapu was the ruler of Mactan. The local chief who "asked Magellan for help in defeating this rival" was Humabon, the ruler of Sugbu/Cebu (if I'm not mistaken).
Very nice and informative simple history... I always watch your video hoping to help me in my history class and it did ... Thank you !! And always keep up the good and knowledgable work.. :-)👍👍👍 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Filipino here, though spain colonised this ancient malay archipelago and committed atrocities to the locals I personaly couldn't deny the fact that they did an amazing job because of em they were able to unite all the tribes in the islands and created a new nation, magellans exploits is one if not the greatest leap in the history of our species such courage all this people have to venture into the unknown and make history. Next step MARS....
Beautifully created....
