    You can get magical eraser for stains, wet it a bit and gently scrub the stain, it’ll get any palette looking young and brand new, it also stops beading

    I would add a light pad for tracing. I love being able to freely erase my sketch (and keep my sketch) and transfer it cleanly using a light pad. A bit of a investment but I love it.

      Worth every penny. I can draw ok, but realize it's a weak point and want to lay down some pigment so tracing is helpful to progression.

    I really like the Mijello palette. It's one of my favourite buys since I started watercolouring. I just use an eraser on it if it gets more stained than I like.
    I am also into blocks for most of the time. I like painting from my couch, and then a brush pen (I prefer the big Pentel Aquash) and a small-ish block is just super convenient!

    I too hate having a dirty palette. I finally found one that I love, the Darwin Stain Resistant Nano-material palette. It's lightweight, small, not fragile like my old porcelain one, and by golly, it comes clean with water and a paper towel. If it ever starts looking a little dingy I just use a Magic Eraser and it looks like new.

    Must haves... baby wipes, blue painter's tape, scissors, mechanical pencil, needed eraser, white eraser, black pen, silver gold and copper metallic gel pens, and white signo uniball pen.
    I use QoR watercolors almost exclusively I have some other fun things I like....
    QoR watercolor ground, QoR masking fluid, a metal rod from the paint palette (the pin when I removed the fold out part of the pallet) I use this to put colors more smoothly into the pans and use it in the making fluid. I also have a good quality pencil case to keep my travel kit together for a quick everything in 1 thing place.

    I was a clean palette painter. Then I learned from my teacher, (and also Ms. Tanabe) that mud is totally useful. Don't know about Keiko, but my teach hasn't "cleaned" his palette in so long he can't remember the last time. Goes against my "clean" gene, but can't possibly argue with the results they achieve, so no more cleaning of my w/c palette. Occasional wiping of areas is of course accepted!

    Specific palette cleaner is a great shout. I had no idea it existed and actively avoided plastic palettes because the stains drive me crazy, even when their weight is more comfortable than ceramic.
    And somehow whenever I share/lend palettes the most staining colors get rubbed into it; genuinely had a brand new palette stained blue after the first use.

    I'm a primarily a watercolor artist ...so the first thing I noticed you didn't show was a spray bottle. I was kind of disappointed too, because I had recently seen it on the video for acrylic artists needs. The ironic part of that video was that you went on and on about NOT using water with acrylic. Anyway, I guess I'll have to go back and find that video because I think I now need that mister in my arsenal- the one I have is from Walmart. Its old, covered in paint and kinda janky now when it sprays. I use primarily M. Graham watercolors so I knew exactly which color about- cobalt teal! Its the best for blue skies! (The other one is opera pink by Daniel Smith.) I like M. Graham because I live in Phoenix. Art supplies out here in the desert tend to dry out quickly, but because M. Graham paints are made from blackberry honey, most of the pigments don't ever really dry out. On another note-You wanna talk about artist problems?! Talk about tape! There is nothing worse than spending hours or days on a painting and then when you go to take the tape off, no matter how careful, it rips the paper. And I am a seasoned artist! If you know any techniques for getting the tape off and not ripping the paper, I want to see that! I'm not a fan of 120 lb. watercolor paper blocks because it changes the paper underneath. I'm going to go back through your videos now to see if you have done a video on white pens, watercolor paper, masonite boards or porcelain palettes. I would also love to see a video on products used to seal my work when finished. Like, does it matter that I use Krylon products like Crystal Clear on all my work? Is there a better way? I like your videos and follow you on Instagram too! (I'm @ joy.veteran.artist if you're curious) @mikenotjerry do you ever post your own work anywhere online or in social media? I would love to see it. Looking forward to more videos in the future, keep up the good work!

      Jane Miettinen it’s an enameled metal tray, white with blue trim, so you can see your colors very clearly like with porcelain. Jerry’s sells them. They’re fairly inexpensive. I have a small and large one. Look for “Butcher Tray Palette”.

    I really enjoy your videos. I appreciate Jerry's providing many sources of info, for people like me.
    A question I have always wondered about - on the brush washer, you said you clean your brushes on the bottom ridges. This doesn't damage the brush?

    • @MikeNotJerry
      @MikeNotJerry 4 роки тому +4

      I think most of the time the reason brushes get damaged from a brush washer is people using excessive force, especially for oils and acrylics. It shouldn't take a lot of force to get the pigment out of the bristles, so just gently raking them across a few times should get the job done.

    This is terrific and funny....I'm afraid I don't use many of these products. I'm mostly a studio watercolor painter cuz I don't really like being watched while I paint and I sure as hell don't want to discuss what I'm doing with anyone. If they like what I do (when it's done) fine, if not...go to hell! Loose paper works well for me; I've never stretched paper in my 50+ years of watercolor painting and I don't intend to begin. Yep, sometimes it buckles a bit even when I tape it down...what the hell, I just go with it. Maybe a big puddle of color becomes a big flower or a lake or whatever. Waterbrushes are crap, tried 'em, they leak and make painting a pain in the ass. I call myself a "hamburger" artist cuz I'm a slob and use whatever. I try to buy good quality paint and about 95% of my work is on Arches paper. I personally think the simpler one keeps their gear the better. Hey, Jerry, I LOVE your store and the service is excellent. Thanks for the very entertaining, even if a bit commercial, video. All the best from a customer! P.S. This was a helpful video. Thank you. I would really like to learn about the different frisket delivery systems. For lack of a better term. I know that it comes in jars, bottles, pens, and bottles with small nibs. But is their a different way to use them or different purposes? Are there different types of friskets? Colors? I have been looking for information and really have not found much of anything.

    • @MikeNotJerry
      @MikeNotJerry 4 роки тому +1

      Since frisket is designed to be removed after application, it does not come in different colors. Most traditional watercolor frisket comes in a liquid form that can be applied with a wooden/rubber nib or brush. If you use a brush, I recommend using something that is inexpensive and be sure to clean it immediately after use, as the frisket can gunk up the brush when it dries.

    It's not really true for me with block. Sure buckle paper sucks, but I'm even more picky about how the paper handle watercolor. My first block that I ever bought was a small block from Potentiarte. It's cheap, like $4, but I don't like it at all. It's so dry and rough, in this paper everything that I did looks so patchy. I can't manipulate it like I want and I hate it. Other brands are more expensive, so I used Montval. Even now I tend to buy loose Arches paper and make my own sketchbook. I do reccomend Baohong block, they're dirt cheap and made out of 100% cotton, reminds me with Moulin du Roy just how relatively cheap it is.
