Just before RIP good guitar sound. I remember tapeing this show on a VHS when MTV aired it. Must have seen it a 100 times, really good show.

Same bro! Aired the same night I went to see them live in Dublin, went home after and watched it 😂 Long way from 15 years old these days and I still love them.

Look at those walls of Mesa stacks, the sound is just ballkicking. Today they have probably some software emulator in a backstage = technical progress = and the sound is shit. Rock/metal concert must be deadly loud like this in 03'

Arthur Vin I think gone are the days of active backlines and the new way is better sounding and easier for engineers. But I definitely agree that the guitar tone has so much more punch and balls to it here. But going through a PA in a live mix, I think the new AXE-FX rigs fit pretty well.

You're an idiot if you think all those amps are on.
Also, Metallica's sound has been shit long before they started using Axe-FXs. Ever since the Diezel VH4 became a big part of his rig, his tone went down the shitter.

I believe their entire rig here was all Mesa/Boogie instead of being a blend of Boogie and Diezel. It sounds exactly like something you'd hear from a Mark series and/or Dual Recto.

Nah, I saw a clip of James walking out from backstage in 2003 and you saw his Triaxis/Diezel rig, but I have no idea why it sounded so much more massive and punchy here than it did for the next 10 years before switching to Axe-Fx.

+LukeBogart I honestly don't hear much Diezel tone here. Sounds like a Recto and Mark series to me.

They need to go back to this sound. The guitars live anymore don't sound very heavy at all.

If anything, the guitars nowadays sound dated, they need to update their sound.
