- "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)"
Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colours on the snowy linen land
Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds and violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colours changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artists' loving hand
Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...
Don McLean wrote this song ten years before Josh Groban was born. What is good stays forever. Just sublime.

I got the Pleasure of seeing Don McLean live 3 times. I'm sure he is honored!
I am 70, I am in Korea at Camp Humphries, serving my country. Yeah I know what the hell right? I am sitting alone in my Airbnb having done laundry and cleaned up, waiting to go to work tomorrow and got in the music mood, and Josh you can ease the feelings of anyone in any mood, be it lonely, be it distance, be it death of a loved one, or all of them, you raise us all up with your voice. Thank you, I will ask when I do pass on that one of your songs is sung at my funeral. Thank you Josh for sharing your talent with us.
Beautiful words💜
Hello, Mr. Duboi,
Do you know about a God who loves you? The Lord Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for you? Since you have spare time where you are stationed, pick up a New Testament, and begin to read in the Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - which are the eye-witness accounts of Jesus as He walked the dusty streets of Jerusalem and other Jewish cities, over two thousand years ago. These accounts, which are true, and known as "The Gospels," tell us of many interactions that the Saviour had with ordinary people. Read these accounts daily, and make a habit of it - and you will be blessed. Hand your life over to this great Saviour, who told Nicodemus in the garden (John 3) "You must be born again." I will be praying for you.
Josh eases the pain of so much sorrow. He also inspires and lifts me up. Bravo Josh, all the best always.
I am a life long fan of Vincent Van Gogh, his life and paintings. This song does him justice 🌟🌟🌟

It is very beautiful song, I love Don McLean and Josh Garban sang , but I feel different feeling
Josh, there is not one song that you sing that doesn't touch my heart in a special kind of way:your selection of melodies, your incredibly sensitive timing, and the love that you bring to each artist is a true pleasure ... what a gift you have... and you are pretty cute too... I'm an old lady now, but you make my heart remember the romantic days of times gone by..... many thanks.

Why would anyone dislike this? I don't understand. This is a beautiful song about a wonderful artist sung by a wonderful man and performed on guitar by a talented musician.
Absolutely... It's an artist interpretation of the song and the artist's feeling, the way he sees that song.💜. Its something so personal and unique and it should be something appreciated much more...
Some people are emotionally harmed by beauty. They may be going through emotionally difficult times and when they encounter beauty they are taken aback by it, feeling sorrow that they cannot appreciate the beauty in their current state of mind.
Talented musician? Parkening has been, if not the best, at the top of the classical game for 5 decades.
@Josh Groban Your soulful interpretation of this song channels that very deep dark place that is alluded to in the lyrics. Yet beyond words. Love what you do Josh. Voice. And more. 💐PS- Lani Hall was first version of "Vincent" I knew. Heard it?
It lacks soul
Josh Groban has the voice of an angel.
I totally agree😊
"Thats ok I'll play both parts on one guitar!" What a BOSS
Years ago I saw Parkening in concert. He was incredible! What a treat it would have been to see Groban and Parkening live together. I used to play around on a guitar and can't imagine the skill it would take to play a 12-string classical guitar.

So sorry dear. My heart goes out to you.
I'm so sorry, Victoria. I also think of my son when I hear this song. He passed away in 2015. The world is just too much for some to bear.
Victoria Ruggiero-Diaz I lost my son as well on July 4th 2012 he was my first born and forever 25. I am sorry you have to be a grieving mother too. We didn’t deserve this. But listening to this song is so beautiful I have always loved it and it reminds me of my son Adam as well.. I pray you find peace!! 💗💗🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I looked up the life story of Vincent and I have NEVER heard another song so beautifully portray another's life. He was a tortured soul who finally took his own life after losing at love for another. Don M. is a musical genius for his composition and Josh G. is a master sending the final message to us all. Thanks.
I just watched Loving Vincent, I know this comment is 12 years ago but I definitely recommend you watch the movie if you still feel this way. It's the most beautiful movie I've ever seen.

you can fully appreciate the song if you really know who Vincent Van Goh was..as an artist I really thanks Mr.Don McClean for writing and making a song for him...too late for the people in Vincent's time to appreciate and see his gift and priceless talent. and especially the beauty of his works and arts..
i so agree with you,,nowadays people like Vincent are so rare to come by....
I learned about "Vincent" when I was a kid in elementary school. I'm 76 now and I've read about him again and again. A priceless talent. Sad that he was so sad in life. Sad that young people do not learn about him and other "artists" of this world's past. Beautiful history if people would just take the time.
168 years of Vincent Van Gogh today and here I am. Listening for the hundredth time this beautiful song performed by this amazing singer, played by this incredible musician and even so crying a river. Thanks Don McLean for putting in words all my thoughts towards Vincent.

He has such great respect for music in its own natural interpretation. I've enjoyed listening to Josh for years.
Disagree. He may have more talent than anyone but not for this song. On rare occasion I've found covers to be better or nearly as good. But not for this song...and I think never, ever, for this song.

I remember seeing Don McLean in concert in the 70's. Hearing him sing this song in person was amazing. To have Josh, who I have also seen in person, sing this fabulous song, brings it full circle for me. To hear Don explain that he just wanted to pay tribute to the artist and in doing it, bring out the artist in himself.

I love the way Josh Groban does this. I can get lost in the thought of this. It is so beautiful. And the guitar is perfectly played. Thank you for this.
He is an amazing artist with a beautiful soul.
Definately 🧡
Vincent was an enigma and a very passionate and spontaneous man. He was underappreciated in his own time much like Josh is I think. This version does justice to the man that Vincent was and to what he stood for.
I don't think Josh Groban is underappreciated. The entire world as it were knows he's a tremendous singer. But some songs just need to be left alone. This is one of them
@@sulatlalaki you're correct in that he's not underappreciated. I think you're quite wrong about songs being "left alone".
Covers are vitally important to make old music accessible to newer generations. I'm in my 30s and wouldn't know this song at all if not for this cover. "Leaving songs alone" are the best way to have them lost and forgotten to time. Vocal megastars from Dolly to Pavarotti sing songs that they didn't write, the tradition is long-standing and serves a valid purpose.
You're more than welcome to not like (and presumably not give attention to) a cover, but there is no song 'sacred' enough to not sing, as well as no individual qualified enough to make such a designation.

This world was never meant for someone as beautiful as you. Strongest words ever spoken by man.
I agree 10000%....lyrics that reach the heart completely..
I was thinking the same....
There's so much parallel b/w Vincent van Gogh and Robin Williams: extraordinary artistic creativity, ability to produce brilliant masterpieces, and sadly, their struggle w/manic depression that most people didn't know about until it's too late. RIP Robin, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you :-(. Kudos to Josh for his brilliant rendition.

Yes, I agree. It was a beautiful song when it first came out decades ago written and sung by Don McLean and is still a gentle, lovely song now. Glad Josh brought new fans to it, and that it is remembered by a new audence and is not forgotten.
This was the version the first time I heard this song sung actually. I got gooses every time I watched or listened to this. Then I found Don's original version. I was surprised cos I can't see emotions from his face and voice even. I guess the song itself perhaps should be dealt with subtly and tasted slowly. Gradually I fell in love with Don and his version. But when I turned back, I still get gooses from Josh's singing. He is SIMPLY amazing! I freely admit, as a pro classical "person"... I grew up as a teen with Mclean singing this... there's a wonderful ( Don's original) recording of his song on UA-cam that features many repros of van gogh's paintings. It's beautiful! I just LOVE C. Parkening.... and this arrangement. To tell the truth, I was never a Groban fan. However, he sings this with such depth of feeling. Groban "understands" this and I honestly love his interpretation! My sincere thanks to Anita8891 for sharing this... "they did not listen, they're not listening still"..... however "I" did listen several times. "Now...perhaps, I understand." This performance is indeed artistic. THANK YOU. so very much.

The first time heard this song decades ago i fell in love with it. Thank you josh Groban for a wonderful cover of this song. I heard in one of your interviews that you also suffer from depression like Vincent and like me. It's really a hard struggle. May our Lord Jesus Christ bless us always to overcome all the trials in our lives.
beautiful comment
I would like to Thank my Divinity Teacher, Miss Musgrave for playing this song in class and the reaction from a class of rough n' tumble East End kids who for a few moments were transported into the beautiful.
Lust For Life. Irving Stone. One biography I've read at least 5 times.
