Eastern Indigo, The Best Pet Snake?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 січ 2021
- The eastern indigo snake (Drymarchon couperi) is North America's king cobra. These snakes are giant, beautiful, intelligent, super snakes. An absolute legend. And yet in most ways, they make a far more reasonable pet than do king cobras. I guess that isn't saying much. So is the eastern indigo a good pet? And is it the best pet snake for you?

Hey Clint, just recently found your channel. You do an amazing job showing off these awesome animals. I'll probably never own any myself but its great to experience them vicariously though your channel. Thanks!
Thank you! I'm so glad you found us 🙂
Welcome! So glad to have another rad animal lover here!
@@ClintsReptiles I think you need to address the differences between what you reported in your video, vs the many owners here that believe you overstated the "poop" issue and as a result were a bit miserly on the "handling" score". Otherwise; love your videos and am a fan.

@@Jerry9s Have to agree, to be honest. Especially considering Clint has a False Water Cobra, which are arguably just as well-known for their feces and just their overall messy nature...
Maybe bias as well as the high cost and limited availability of the Eastern Indigo was influencing his opinion without him realising?
Either way, it was still a great video and showcase of this awesome animal. So much so that this is the first result you get when typing, "indigo snake," or any other similar wording or phrasing in the UA-cam search bar. That says a lot.
"More reasonable than a king cobra" is a hilarious bar to measure against.
Yeah kind of like describing a weapon as “more reasonable than an atom bomb.”
Someone once told me the best thing about radiators is they don't catch things on fire. I later learned that's not true but at the time I thought it was so funny, like how bad does something have to be that the best thing about it is that it doesn't catch random things on fire? Unrelated but made me think of it.
The fact that he was squirming around a bit when he was with Clint but didn’t move at all when he was back with his owner proves that he’s really an emotionally intelligent snake. He recognized his papa and felt perfectly safe with him
I noticed this too. :) Honestly, even my corn is that way. She's totally handleable by anyone (she's converted quite a few reptile-nervous folks), but she's calmer with my husband or me than with anyone else. I always feel honored.
It's quite difficult to handle my Aunt and Uncle's Florida King Snake. When ever I do with them around, he just kind of slithers on me while desperately trying to inch himself to his owners, preferably my aunt. Some say snakes can't bond with their owners, but I think otherwise.
Came for the noodles, stayed for the Willy Wonka quotes 🤩
Stick around until the end!
Yeah same 😂
The oompaloompa song is what got me
I usually just stay for Clint he can make even boring things seem fun and exciting.
3:20 and the end 16:43 lol
My god that is one of the most beautiful snakes I've ever seen.
Ikr! It's gorgeous

Yes my dream snake!
Agreed
I really liked that you gave the owner some screen time. You can easily see the affection for the critters under his care.

A few months ago I fell in love with this channel for the tongue in cheek descriptions of how to care for ridiculous, dangerous animals. Then I ran out of those videos and started watching the rest. Somehow... I am now on a waitlist for a chameleon gecko, and there's a terrarium being shipped to my house. Sigh. Well played sir.
Welcome to the best community on the internet and congrats on your future new baby 😊
Don't worry, we'll have more bad pets to cover in the future too. Watching videos about good pets is dangerous...
@@ClintsReptiles My Childrens Python and my Jewelled Lacertas agree...
He got me too so don't feel bad. I got one baby Ackie about 5 months ago after watching his video on them. Now I have that little noodle, a 3 year old male and 3 more babies on the way...
How is your chameleon gecko doing?
My great grandma had one of these snakes living behind her house for many, many years (she lived in the middle of no where until moving in with my family a couple years ago). She would see him every couple days usually, and whenever we visited she would tell us all about him. At first she seemed very scared of it given the size, but eventually she saw him as a neighbor of sorts! I don't know if he's still living there, but I like to think he's still around.
I am so proud to call this snake a Part of my family. Here in europe they cost more as twice the money, but I dreamed of these snakes since I was a child and it was totally worth it. I own several reptiles and still, the eastern indigo is my absolute favourite and they are worth the work and money.
Greetings from germany.
Amazing!
The initial price of your dream snake/reptile is fleeting, the value over the long run, is a personal investment in happiness. 😊 Congratulations on having your dream snake. It’s was a very good snake to dream about.
I envy you. I love these snakes.
I would love an indigo but being in the UK I doubt it'll ever happen
He's worth it, it makes absolutely no sense for me to have one, but my goodness, I have never seen a snake that beautiful before. Congratulations on your amazing snake.
I was a little concerned when the owner described his snake's enclosure size, but when he said he exercises them all the time, it made a lot more sense. He's willing to put in the time and work it takes to keep an intelligent animal happy with a small enclosure. I'm glad to see owners going above and beyond in their animal care, whatever form that takes.
"They're not prisoners" perfect and sadly rare attitude among reptile keepers. You can see his snakes are family, as pets should be.
With this parody of Willy Wonka and his raps, Clint needs to become a singer.
My rap name is Silly Wonka.
@@ClintsReptiles as long as it is not "Silly Wanker" ... *rofl*
@@ClintsReptiles I figured it would've been Raptile.
Gotta say, my Eastern isn't all that bad with the poop thing, nor is my Texas Indigo or my Black Tail Cribo. I've had bigger messes from my ball pythons. I think the poop thing is just an unfortunate situation for you lol. You really should get one.
I agree, my female Eastern Indigo certainly poops, but it is nowhere near what Clint related. @Clint's Reptiles Don't believe the legend, this is a great snake to own.
Do your Drymarchon ever crap when you’re handling them?
Mine poops solid too, doesn’t smell to bad either. I’ve seen much worse from a false water cobra, the person I got him from said genetics can play a role in how bad it is
@@johnhufton5787 never
Is there a similar snake that doesn't have that problem?
As a person who had a deep fear of snakes as a child, this channel has really gotten me to understand and appreciate these beautiful animals more. Clint’s infectious enthusiasm and compassion for them really helped bridge the gap for me. While I don’t think I would ever go so far as to want a snake as a pet, I definitely admire them and feel more respect and less fear when I encounter them in the wild. You’re doing great work, Clint.

I Would love to hold one of these and see the iridescence in person. But that's too much snake poo for me to have at home, even if it was cheaper to buy.
Don't miss the full version at the end :)
Just put down my deposit and submitted my permit application on one I’m so excited I can barely contain myself.
The angry look snake brows, love it
They're so glorious!
Those ones are usually venomous
We are so lucky that we have these snakes literally on our property. I feel a lot safer knowing that if there is any venomous snakes that this one is out there taking care of it. I've seen many of these leave our gopher tortoise dens. And we have found many many gigantic sheds.
We convinced a neighbor to leave a King Snake alone on her property for the same reason, they hunt the snakes that she should actually be afraid of.
Where are you? Alabama?
That's so awesome! I hope they can make a comeback in the wild!
You’re lucky to have them at all. They are extremely endangered. Hardly any left in Alabama. They were once thought completely extirpated from the state. Personally I don’t really like that people are breeding these in captivity for profit when wild populations are at risk and struggling so badly. Just my opinion though, not trying to go on a screed or anything
@@Glassandcandy The captive-breeding of eastern indigo snakes by private keepers has no impact whatsoever--neither negative nor positive--on the wild population. Those snakes are from animals that were in private collections before the species was listed as threatened in 1979, and for a variety of reasons the offspring should never be released into the wild. Unfortunately for the captive population, the gene pool is growing shallow because no new blood has been introduced for decades, at least not legally. However, scientifically managed breeding programs are reintroducing eastern indigos into areas where they've been extirpated in the wild, so far in southeast Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Eastern indigos are vanishing in the wild are entirely because of human impacts related to habitat destruction from development, road mortality, pesticides and herbicides, and wanton killings. A few may get poached occasionally for the pet trade by unscrupulous individuals, but that number is negligible in comparison.
“Large Noodle with fudge please!”
“Extra large noodle with extra fudge, got it!”
“ ...wait...”
Many thanks, Clint! The "Oompa, Loompa" bit had me in tears laughing, my elementary-age kids saying "what???", and my wife shaking her head saying "he's not wrapped tight!" Perfect family moment, thank you for your enthusiasm and love of all creatures great and small - and for the poop and small children jokes!
I worked with one of these gentle giants at the zoo years ago. His name was Orlando, and he was adorable! I miss him to this day! Wonderful video, and the Willy Wonka references were hilarious. Bravo!!
Thank you! They're such special snakes!
There was a breeding pair on the property where I grew up. One about seven foot the other about 9. I handled them throughout my life from about 8 till 18 when I left. Just relaxed snakes would just hang out and warm up on me during cool early spring mornings. They were almost always around the same area on the property. Just touching them after a few years and they just relaxed and were happy to be handled. Being on the river they kept the moccasin population down and we never saw a rattle snake. Lots of mutual respect. That and crows I raised one that fell from the nest it came around with his family for something like 15 years would yell at my window for me to come out. Hop on my shoulder and clean my hair. Eventually he got his mate to do the same. I miss country life.
Wow it sounds like WE were very fortunate! We had these guys living on our property for years (until we sold the residence in fact they may STILL be there). We had at least a dozen of them maybe more. Plenty of food around for them obviously (they are NOT particular!). nope no cages for us. they'd come up on our porch (especially in the winter) to get warmed up and eventually learned to crawl up on our laps and would not move. What awesome snakes they are. oh.. they never pooped on us or made ANY attempt to bite us. Remember that these snakes will only bite in defense so as long as you handle them gently and are not aggressive they absolutely would never bite because of course YOU are not food to them. Always handle them as these keepers are doing... with open hands.
Richard was so sweet. You can see why that snake is so happy and calm. It had a great upbringing with lots of quality time. Him giving them time outside of the enclosure is a great thing. What a beautiful snake. I had never seen one before. Thanks for making this video, Clint! ❤
“Went in a rat but came out as mud” IM DYING 😭 that was gold
Honestly, I watch these videos for 2 reasons
1. Clint is one of the friendliest and nicest people to ever exist and he's so passionate about these animals that its engaging to watch him chat about them and its so cool to see someone talking about something they're really into!
2. he explains everything so well and with such enthusiasm as well as actually having the animals just chilling on-screen so you can properly understand their behaviours and size.
One of the best channels on this site
Edit: YESSS HE NOTICED THIS WOOOO
Hey Clint! I have been petrified of spiders and most reptiles until my husband showed me this channel.
I've heald a boa and instantly fell in love.
I held my brothers bearded dragon and again fell in love.
Thank you for this content, it showed me my fear was from ignorance of how amazing and stinkin rad reptiles are. I'm so excited to get my very own corn snake!
The way Richard talks about his snakes is so, so heartwarming
Finally an episode for this snake! I've been wishing for this episode to come out. Now if we could get an American Toad/other Toads video I'd have all the videos to convince my family to get the pets I want.
I'll see what I can do :)
@@ClintsReptiles Thank you Clint! Your videos on frogs have been great for convincing my friend that Frogs are actually cute. My American Green Tree Frog, Smokey, which I got because of your video, says hi btw!
This was uploaded at the perfect time!! I just started reading The Hobbit, and then there's Mr. Bilbo himself on Clint's Reptiles!!!
Coincidence? I think not!
Now we know what Mr Bilbo decided to do after he sorted out all that ring nonsense 😄
I could listen to Clint talk about paint drying as he has such a great way of teaching without boring us. I wish I could have been a student of his! Great work Clint!!!!!!
Thank you so much! Those are my favorite compliments.
I had heard elsewhere about the desirability of these snakes but couldnt really understand why. Yeah they're black and shiny but they didnt look that special in appearance...now, seeing how colossal they are I finally get it! Seeing it move it really is reminiscent of a black King Cobra but without the looming threat of death!
They really show best in person, I never really GOT them until I saw one at a show.
Black and shiny is cool af.
That snake is gorgeous! I can’’t believe I didn’t know they existed in my own country! When you said they eat Diamondbacks I immediately had all kinds of respect for this snake. I grew up around those and they are no joke.
So wonderful to hear Richard takes his animals outside for extended periods of time. I wish everyone did this.
I want to give my snakes more free time, but I'm horrified of the idea of a bird swooping down on my precious Ball Python. I'm hoping to one day have an extra room that I can set up purely to give them a place to explore.
@@darkeather2 there's another youtuber, Lori Torrini, who did a video about giving snakes enrichment outside the enclosure. She has exercise tents designed for dogs that can contain most snakes for a couple of hours. I can't remember the name of the video but I think she put it out within the last 2 months. That might be a nice option for your BP.

If I can deal with mondo dumps from these guys, I can adjust to these beautiful snakes! Thank you for this video Clint and Richard!!
I've always liked reptiles, but never thought about keeping one. After watching almost all of your Best Pet videos I find myself waiting for my red ackie to hatch and grow before shipping. Currently have trucks full of packages coming every day to prepare for the little guy
Yep! That was us! Never thought about owning a reptile until Clint convinced us that we needed a leopard gecko. 😉

This is THE MOST beautiful north American snake. The owner is an absolute snake father I've ever seen. I would just be in tears holding that majestic Indigo 💜 one of my absolute favorites
I love the look on the snakes face, like he is alway thinking. I wonder could we target train this type of snake with food/ ball? I seen people target train lizards. I saw video with a gentleman training his snake. Richard is fantastic! He loves his pet snakes, they are not captive he lets them out. Beautiful.
He's amazing! This would be a good candidate for target training.
A. we need more more musical episodes.
B. I feel a pacman frog vid would be good for children that might think it would be a good pet for them.
Agreed!
Clint, this is your best video yet(imho). I'm in awe of the beautiful gentle giants. Just as you introduced Apeb he turned around to face the camera! That's priceless. "I'm ready for my closeup Mr. Laidlaw". Looking at his intelligent gaze, it would be impossible to not form a bond with this amazing creature. It appears Eastern Indigo snakes actually enjoy being handled.
I really like this guy. Great low-key humor and personable style. Very educational.
Listening to Richard talk about his snake was amazing I have never heard of anybody taking their snakes out to a park to just let him go free.
It's really hard to find a leash that will fit properly!

That Oompa Loompa song has made Clint and this channel transcendent, so I have no other option but to include you in my final will and testament.
Hi Clint! I just wanted to let you know that I am a soon to be high school art teacher, and that your channel has inspired me so much! Great to see you and the finished video was a blast so happy to see the final product.....thanks for having me.
I once went to this thing called Zoo school when I was in 4th grade, it was hosted by a animal rescue that got funds as a traveling zoo, they had everything from armadillo, to Bob cat's, to a eastern indigo snake, and come the end of the year each of us took two animals, reaserched them, and showed them to preschoolers live, handling them as we taught them what we had learned. I almost did the indigo snake but since it was in shed I opted for the combo of three toed box turtle and ball python. The turtle pooped Every time I put it down as I'd lead when picking it up and the ball python had a unhealthy obsession with my armpit, and I will NEVER forget that day, heck that year. Mainly thought to say this due to the indigo snake but yeah. If anyone out there has a similar situation and a kid who loves animals I highly advise letting them take it, it really is amazing to have that kind of hands on learning and even better to share it with others..... Man 4th grade was a good year....

One thing i'd like to see Clint touch on a little more for the audience is what he brings up at 8:54 - Some ppl who may be more inclined to buy exotic pets might think that permits & regulations are just tedious & unecessary bureaucracy. But educating viewers about these regulations help them realize that not only are these practices good for the species, but also human health/safety & the environment.
Keep up the great work Clint!
