The problem isnt my prices, its some peoples budgets / bank account being too low. My prices are not subject to peoples bank account balance
I have no idea what his prices are but I'm sure they are much less than the dealer, and after being subscribed for over a year, the Wizard seems very trustworthy and goes the extra mile to save people money, which lots of shops won't do. Seems like money well spent.

Back in MY hayday, if I had a press-fit job, bushing, ball joint, wheel bearing, I always put the new part in the shop freezer and gently heat up the receiving bore or opening. Many times, the new part would fall into place with little or no persuasion.
Yep, get a deep freezer for the shop and give it a day
@@icanfartloud The freezer trick is fantastic. I've used in on ball joints and wheel bearings. It's especially useful on ball joints because it lets you get the joint started a surprisingly long way into the bore by hand and you can be sure it's straight before you start pressing properly.
Who has time for a freezer? Keyboard duster, sprayed upside-down. Much colder than most freezers - ready in seconds, not hours.

I don't like to badmouth the Wizard but those type of practices are plain foolish. Especially when you're self employed and the entire business depends on you. Pretty hard to be a mechanic when both of your eyes are missing. How much time does it take to put on a polycarbonate face shield?
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH I'm never the Nanny. I don't care if you wear a seat belt or helmet. Your choice. You know the risks but when it come to cut off wheels. I have seen them explode and throw shrapnel. They freak me out. I would not use one without protection. And they are like bombs that go off with no warning.

Well this is a good place to give you guys a heads up. I bought and harbor freight ball joint separator (not a pickle fork) on Thursday and when i was tightening it down with a short 3/8 ratchet it exploded on me. No cracking or any sounds and this was on a Honda civic lower ball joint. Almost didn't get my hand back in time broke my pinking and bruised it good. Well the tool said forged steel it was not it was cast with a heavy paint to hided the fact. Just a heads up saving my self a 1/2 hour of driving or 6 bucks wasn't worth it.

I've got a good one part replacement. I changed the alternator on my 2002 Saab 9-3 about 4 years ago, suddenly last year it quit working. I bought a nice Bosch remanufactured unit which is basically factory new so I was bummed it only lasted 3 years (the warranty period as well so I figured they just knew exactly how long it'd last). I got SO lucky, after 3 years the bolt holding the hot wire that connects to the battery had wiggled loose so I was able to buy a thread locking nut and get the alternator hooked back up. I was glad because 1) the nut was like 50 cents and 2) the alternator job is like a 4 or 6 hour job, it's in the back by the firewall and you've got to do quite a bit of disassembly. Spending 50 cents and sneaking my hand back in there to replace the nut was a much better alternative. No problems since.
If that doesn't count because the alternator was replaced (although like I said it WAS already 3 years old) my 1986 Saab 900 (yes more Saabs) would randomly stall after going down the road for about 5 minutes, turns out ONE of the two fuel pumps, the pump that puts the fuel from the tank into a sort of bucket containing the pump that goes into the engine was working but very weak. The car was consuming more fuel than the small pump could put into the bucket, I replaced it for $18 and it ran fine again.

Yep. I wear eye protection when spraying carb clean in some situation. NO FUN getting that in the eye. I NEVER want that again.
Same here I got grease stripper in my and it burned I had to get my eye flushed out at the ER I'm thankful I was able to see fine after that
Car Wizard! I am loving this SL500 series! I was lucky enough to get an 04 Mercedes CLK320 from my father a year ago, he has always joked that one day he is going to get an SL500 to rub it in my face and so we can be the benz boys. But this series sure makes me wish he would buy one! The SL500s are such clean cars.

I've put ball joints in the freezer before pressing in and I think it helped.
Definitely helps to freeze a tight ball joint. That little bit of shrinkage can go a long way 👍
Looks like the old Milwaukie may not have had enough lead in its pencil?
Use dry ice
A handy tip for this kind of job is to put the new ball joint in a fridge / freezer for a little while just before fitting it as it’ll shrink a little bit making reassembly much easier 👍🏼

Just replaced the AC compressor in my '03 dodge caravan. Had to remove the serpentine belt and alternator to get the old compressor out. It was a smooth and straightforward process. I thought of the car wizard throughout the whole process. Thanks for the uploads man
Lubricate the threads on tool as well as the outer mounting ring for the ball joint mount after using a wire brush on the splines, place the ball joint in the freezer for a couple of hours.

Hi Car Wizzard! *I* am one of the ones that wanted to see how that ball joint can be swapped out, since I have been told by MB and a couple of decent indys that the whole strut had to be replaced to fix the looseness. Fantastic job! BTW, I have to agree with the ones that had problems with the grinder and no protection. Please do us a favor and at least use a face shield or goggles.

Hi Wizard and Mrs.W. I enjoy your channel. Thanks for the great video and tips on care repair and care. This is video is full of useful information for any M-B owner. Mine is a 2005 M-B E500 (about 101k miles currently) with similar components. Once the front right hand turn signal light stopped working. The car would not pass PA state inspection. My mechanic had trouble, recommended M-B dealer service. Dealer recommended new headlight assembly (about $2,500 for parts alone). I purchased a new (unused) headlight assembly on e-Bay for $1,700. It did not work on my car either. e-bay seller graciously gave me my money back. I fixed the problem by buying a U-Haul trailer lighting module ($45 plus sales tax), installing it in the trunk with the car battery for power, tapping into the tail light right turn signal, and running a long wire through the car to the right front headlight assembly. Right front turn signal light repaired! I will continue to follow your M-B experience with pleasure.
My wife's 2006 ML500 have the exact same issue with the turbine speed sensor. I was not sure on how to repair the module myself so I sent it out to Van Nuys, Ca. to a module repair company for $200 and they repaired it. My dad and brother who are extremely experienced mechanics we're shocked I was able to figure out and repair it for under $300. Thanks to UA-cam and research on the internet. I'm glad you spent some time on this EXTREMELY common issue.

5:10 - I used to photograph at a MB dealer, I'll never forget when a lady came in and her 18 month old E Class needed 3 grand worth of brakes. She was saying how the vehicle was under warranty still and they told her it didn't cover any of the stuff she needed... oh man lol, she was demanding they release her from her lease and was swearing and screaming.
In one sense I get that Mercedes wants you to have a flawless experience and that is best done by just replacing chunks of things all at once, but most people don't want to replace their entire front suspension when a single bushing wears out.
A Friend of mine always says, when you buy a Mercedes then you have to pay a Mercedes. That lady can't lease an e-class and expect to pay for an a-class...

The thing is, brakes are brakes. Whether it’s a 1987 Honda Accord or a 2020 AMG S-Class. The parts can be more expensive due to the material used and the size of the component, but replacing brakes on an AMG Mercedes should be no more expensive labor wise than a 30 year old Honda. The dealer is just ripping people off under the guise of “oooooh it’s got the 6 piston caliper high performance brakes, it must be 50 times harder to work on” when in fact modern power brakes on every car on the planet have all been the same for 70 years. Drums or disc, they all work the same. Hydraulic fluid pushes a cylinder either in the caliper or the drum which push pads onto the rotating surface which stops the car. Big friggin deal....... oooooh it’s a Mercedes, it must use unicorn dust that no one has ever seen before ooooooh

Many years ago I ran a RR Shadow 2 , one of several I had over time. I did all my own maintenance and repairs and even had the factory workshop manuals. One day whilst going home a loud "thunk" came from the rear passenger side and the car sank to one side. Shadows have a front and rear subframe. The rear shock absorbers are bolted to the subframe. The passenger side shock absorber lower attachment point had corroded through and the shock absorber was now hanging in mid air. To repair this is a NEW subframe unit complete with changing over the rear axle, suspension brakes etc. not to mention the unbelievably exorbitant cost. I got round this by going to my friendly mechanic who was an ex-RR mechanic. He said this was a very common problem with Shadows to the point where he had an engineering firm make the shock absorber fixing cup / mounts that always rusted through. He welded one of these onto my car and job done. Cost ? 250 pounds sterling back in the late 1980's as opposed to many thousands elsewhere. However, to quote Mrs. Wizard " it scared the crap outta me" and I sold the car soon after. That was the last Roller I had, through choice!!

The cost of upcoming repairs for the Allanté is far less than what’s coming for the Mercedes, but I’m just saying that he’s becoming another Hoovie, he gets a car that is done, sells it when it’s working and buys one that is as much a mess as any other used German car! Even if it is for Mrs. Wizard, she should know better!

I really appreciate the time and effort that this technician graciously put into making and sharing the needed tools, advice, procedures and parts sources information for replacing what is a relatively simple component..I feel that I can TRUST this man...So sad that I CAN NOT say such about my Benz dealership..My dealership service advisor is an OK guy, he tries to help but is responsible for through put production goals ($) and he can only do so much to prevent heart attacks upon seeing the labor / parts bill...However the shop people for a well known rea$on have kindly posted a warning sign..The sign instructs customers for Benz car repairs to; first place their credit card , checking account booklet, and wallet upon the counter top , drop their pants and shorts , grasp the provide courtesy handle on the edge of the counter top , bend over , and if vasoline is requested it is an extra cost option..Why such an ABSOLUTE RIP OFF ON BENZ repair PRICES ????..The car concept is great , durability is for CRAP..always in the shop needing some sort of service..Love the roadsters , have an slk/55/amg and an SL600...but always some sort of trouble even though maintenance is done properly...had a 1991Toyota Previa van put on 260,000 miles and ONLY changed out tires , brakes, oil filter and batteries, one exhaust system due to a rear end impact and sold it for $2,000.00 and it was still running great and everything worked as it should ..didn't burn a drop of oil between changes ???? > my Benz cars , upon reaching into my pocket I feel two hands in there next to mine; one is the IRS and the other is the Benz repair shop ..

Hey Wiz........... when I worked in telecom electronics, pink bubble wrap was always used to shield sensitive electronic parts from accidentally receiving static charges that can fry the internal circuitry of the component. That's why when you get electronics shipped to you, it should always be in a grey anti-static bag and then cushioned in pink bubble wrap. Just FYI Weeeeezard.

So I just did (today) upper ball joints on a '03 sequoia 4x4. I learned that with a wrench, I'd get that ball joint press pretty tight, then whack on top of the threaded rod with a small sledge. 3-4 whacks and it will allow all the tension that's built up to relax, then get another turn, whack and repeat. I DON'T have the cordless impact option but I think, when you left that tool to settle for a few moments, had you whacked that threaded rod end and shocked the ball joint, it woulda freed up for you to continue immediately.
One of the mechanics I know puts the balljoints (or anything small enough for pressing) into his shop freezer for a few min before installing. That way you don’t have to wait for it to cool as often. Hope all is well, thanks for the great vids!

At long last, someone who agrees with my rationale exactly, regarding the re-use of nylock, stiff or Simmonds nuts👍🏻🙂. Maybe worth mentioning to your subscribers re ‘lubing’ the threaded rod of both extraction and install tools, mainly for increased longevity of the tools. I could see evidence of you having done that👍🏻 but still worth a mention. Great channel Car Wizard.

Those Milwaukee's sure come in handy. Worked on Tractor-trailers in the early 90's. Dragging my impact and hose up and down the shop to get a wheel bearing off or break something loose. Not doing that work anymore but wish I had one of those back then.

Good job saving mrs wizard 3k! Yeh the merc specific ball joint kit is worth it's weight in gold. You'll get your money back on the first job! I try to get half a turn on the ball joint with a wrench, carefully checking the angle of the ball joint just to make sure it has started absolutely straight. The reason yours went in so darn tough is the ball joint was not straight/square when you started it with the brrt gun - you can see it at 17:12.

Great editing! I hope you don’t mind a few comments... I thought the lighting was better than normal in this video. I could make out the parts pretty well. I’d appreciate a few extreme close up shots to show the small items he’s talking about, for example those little sensors and how they sit on the plate, or for example the ball joint close up after it’s out. I liked the cut at the end so the video doesn’t drag too long. Also like the time lapse so we get an idea of a task without having to sit through all of it. Great job, team!
Ive worked in a front end shop for years, freeze the balljoint it will go in easier , you could also heat the socket but if be careful not to heat it to the point of damaging the strut.

@Car Wizard, for pressing bushings and such into things, you might find it much easier to get a small medical freezer capable of a minimum of -40c. Some of them are like 1-2 cubic feet, and are capable of going down to -70C. One of my friends has one, and putting stuff in that for a few hours before installing bushings allows you to pretty much press the bushing in by hand (gloved of course). You can also get the same effect by spraying propane on the part just out of the nozzle of the bottle. But that's far from my preferred method of shrinking something.
It is now Easter Monday and I am hopeful that the first buy this, not that video of 2021 will be uploaded to the Car Wizard channel tomorrow afternoon or on Thursday. The Car Wizard has not completed one for Mitsubishi or Chrysler, yet. I am definitely going for Mitsubishi first, because the all-new, re-designed, 2022 Outlander is now built on an all-new platform with the 2021 Nissan Rogue. Nissan and Mitsubishi all partnered together already. Prior to before, it was with Chrysler. The third-generation Outlander GT (2014 to 2020), which has the 3 L V6 engine is the best compact SUV to buy, while the second-generation, 2011 and 2012 Outlander with the 3 L V6 engine is very good. The earlier models of the second-generation Outlander (2007 to 2009) with the 3 L V6 engine may have some mechanical problems, but otherwise they are fairly reliable. The ones, I will avoid is any Outlander Sport (RVR in Canada) with any engine, because the vehicle is a sub-compact (looks too small) and it has the horrible, CVT transmission. They are underpowered and the crash test rating is a little poor. It you need an compact SUV, just get the Mitsubishi Outlander, second-generation or third-generation, forget the RVR/Outlander Sport. Also, not to buy from Mitsubishi is the Eclipse Cross, because that crossover looks hideous and they are too underpowered as well. For Chrysler, I would buy a 2002 to 2004 300M full-size sedan or a 2013 to 2016 Town and Country minivan. The rest of the Chrysler line-up are a not to buy, which are any PT Cruiser, any Pacifica crossover and the older, revised-style, 2008 to 2010 300 full-size sedan with the 3.5 L V6 engine or the 5.7 L HEMI V8 engine. They have numerous, electrical and mechanical problems.

Car Wizard Love the show ... Have a trick for you .. When installing news ball joints put the ball joints in the shop freezer ... They will contract .. In the morning heat up the area of the ball joints it will expand and the ball joint will go in like butter ...

I’ve spent so much time trying to find a way to fix those balljoints and was told the same thing I need a complete new ABC Strut, you flashed a pic of the box but it would be wonderful if you could tell me where I could purchase those ball joints, “ although I’ll probably change the suspension to coil overs,great video I hope you do more on your wife SL500, the conductor plate really help me out I hear it’s a common problem, However I didn’t know about the reprogramming if you replace the whole conductor plate, this was very helpful,thank you for your videos there always impressive & well done. I have the large snapon kit for ball joints that should allow you to do that without cutting the stud of the joint off. It has a huge selection of cups and extensions for the cups to fit over the stud.

just did same thing on a 03 e 320 l. i used a hand wrench to tighten the press, pressin in the ball joints was a feet of great aclaim. I bought a ball joint tool from harbor freight for 62.00$ that worked on my mercedes, mercedes sells the ball joint tool for over 1,000.00$. there pretty close to identical, ha
