big developments today on the Swayman - Bruins negotiation with Boston management deciding to go public.....how does this impact the relationship and how does this play out?
Hi Mike. My understanding is that Swayman was not happy with the way his last arbitration went and probably wants to make up what he feels is the difference. He's earned a decent deal but I'm against long term deals as they don't usually age well.
BRUINS had two great goalies last year if they have none this year, oh well.
I don’t think you understand Coach Bob has turned goalies careers around before. Look at halak, (who was looking like his career was ending before Boston) it suddenly got resurrected and he was one of the best backups in the league. They got the best out of Khudobin and turned him around to get a big contract by Dallas and that led to him doing well there. Even ullmark when he came in he was a good goalie but he wasn’t like elite, and then he became so.. this can happen again I truly expect Korpi to be a number one starter and to prove everyone wrong.
What’s the thinking here? Swayman guarantees a 4th place finish? Heck with that. Go with Korpi to start the season.
Huh? Halak was never the same as when in St. Louis. Halak had good games, but those games were continually followed by games where his legs were open wider then a prostitute in Vegas. I love your passion and loyalty, but lets over emphasis his time in Boston. Halak never was never the same guy after St. Louis.
He is trying to demand too much. But the Bruins should have dealt with 1 before they dealt with 1a.
I don't expect Korpi to be any better than league average. If he's at more than like a .905 I'd be shocked. You are saying that the Bruins went to the public court of appeals. I don't think that's the case as much as the Bruins were clearing the air because of all of the miss information that it seems pretty clearly Swaymans camp started. So all of the people reporting all of the Bruins weren't communicating talk. Or the stuff about boston offered him 4 years at 6m and then stopped talking. That was being reported to not be coming from anyone in the Bruins organization, and it was reported to not be coming from Swayman directly. Only leads one source. So yeah the Bruins just stopped Gross trying to negotiate this contract with the fans and just had his client made a villain in the eyes of the fan base. Turn a bout is fair play. So we'll see if Swayman continues the negotiations as hard now. It was easy when he was free and clear and the bruins just looked like they were low balling him and playing hardball. No now it's clear they gave him a more than fair offer. A higher than market rate offer. And he is still refusing.
I think the Bruins have already relented too much by going to 8x$8million...it's more than fair, given the circumstances. Swayman has not done enough in his career to warrant being paid among the top 3 goalies in the league.

I think it’s on both sides. Sway is kind of being a brat, and Don should’ve had this figured out already. But I also think wanting 9 to 10 million, when he already rejected the $64 million offer is ridiculous. He’s so entitled, I get wanting your money but he wants more money than saros and Hellebuyck, and he hasn’t even been a starter… like at this point if I’m Boston I would just trade him

Nope. It takes 2. Bruins let him go to arbitration, knowing full well that almost always damages the relationship.
Here is the reality. Sweeney, and now Neely have screwed up, and now possibly put a cherry on top of that f_ck up. I wouldn't pay Swayman the same or more then Vasilevskiy. Would I give him $8,250,000.00 or $8,500,000.00 max. That being said, Boston mishandled this from the get go. You knew this was gonna be complicated, based off the team having to go to arbitration. Never should have stopped negotiations, and sure as shit shouldn't have traded Ullmark without the guarantee. Then you go and grossly overpaid Lindholm and Zadorov, so now you want to negotiate rationally?
I ultimately think he is gonna have to be traded, and based off his public demands, its gonna reduce the return. I think Utah will come out if Swayman is on the block. I think Utah could trade Ingram, a 1st rd pick, and a top tier middle prospect.
It's funny that the Bruins especially Cam Neely, are calling out Swayman. Pot meet kettle since Cam Neely did the hold out thing back in the 1990's when he played for the Bruins

No. It's Swayman. He says he learned a great deal from his arbitration process last season & is now armed with info. Cam Neely did that. The Bruins screwed this up over a year ago, not his summer.

This is Swayman's issue his agent has a history of making his clients sit out when there are VERY fair offers on the table. I dont begrudge a player for trying to make as much as he can. However Swayman has not proven he is a #1 goalie that can play 50+ games. The Bruins made a VERY fair offer at 8x8. He would be a top 5 paid goaltender. If he wanted to reset the Goalie market salary he would have needed to win a cup or 2, and play 53+ games every year. However he is not that player so NO he should not reset the Goaltending market.
So... B's should have signed Ullmark instead? And the market is the $10mil Bobrovsky is making. He signed that way before getting to the finals and with a shakier resume than Swayman.

Outside of mediocre playoff performances prior, Bob had played the bulk of the games and had won two Vezina’s in Columbus before winning it all in Florida. He was also the number 1 international goalie for Team Russia for years. So yes, Bobrovsky was deserving of his contract because he actually had a resume of years under his belt as the number 1 guy and performed at a high level. Swayman has yet to complete even one season as the sole number one netminder. Not even close to the same, stop it.😂

Swayman’s aspirations are to be in the business of hockey. He hasn’t earned an 8x8 offer let alone 10. Bruins should move on.
Swayman should definitely take that offer if it is indeed on the table. He was lights out in the playoffs last year, but realistically he just doesn’t have the body of work to justify being a top paid goalie in this league. He needs more historical data under his belt before those numbers are considered fair.

And sway has only played for like two years, hasn’t been the starter and wants like Igor 10 million type of money. That’s a little ridiculous don’t you think? The fact is Swayman is still mad and won’t get over the league telling him what he was worth last off-season, with arbitration. Not even mentioning that the Bruins only have 8.5 million left. The culture in Boston is to take a tiny bit of a discount it’s not needed but if he loves Boston as much as he says he does then he should be willing to take 64 million

Very rare for a team to do this. Maybe Bruins offer 8.5M x 4, long term is probably now off the table. Sounds like Swayman is not budging from the rumoured 10M number. I think Swayman is just about greed, spare me the "set the market" for goalies narrative. Sad, but Bruins will be the ones to cave when push comes to shove. Swayman has all the leverage.

Wrong. Swayman is an RFA. He cannot play if he doesn't sign with the Bruins, and if he doesn't play... he's still an RFA next year, amd can be brought to arbitration, or have his rights traded. Swayman is NOT an unrestricted free agent.
Sway asked for a long-term deal at what 5 - 6 last year. He said no lets go to arbitration."" On July 1st, Don goes and spends precisely what 13 million or so leaving 8 million left instead of negotiating. He knew what Sway wanted and went and spent away knowing that he still needed to sign Swayman. Sway is a top 5 goalie in the league who's only 25. An 8 year deal will be all prime years, so it should be more money. Now Cam is talking sh!@ saying Sway is greedy. Sweeney is one who fu!@ed this up. Swayman just wants what fair, but he's dealing with ex players who think every contract negotiation is supposed to be competitive like their old playing days. Sweeney is a prick, and Neeley is an ass!@#$.
Stop it, Swayman is not a top 5 goalie in this league. 🤣 He was great last year, and especially in the playoffs, no question. But there just isn’t enough historical performance for him to be asking to be a top paid goalie in this league. The dude hasn’t even been the sole number 1 guy for a full season yet. Hopefully he keeps it going when he gets back to the ice. But there are exactly zero teams who should pay that kind of money for a guy with his body of work.

Cam Neely taking negotiations public with sarcasm & derision is how you end up with neither Ullmark nor Swayman. It comes back to what you've been saying about arbitration last year. Swayman said in an interview this summer he's way more educated, business savvy, and has a much better idea of his value than last season. Translation: The Bruins created this problem and hurt themselves again today.
Trading Ullmark was not a mistake, at all. This is all on Swayman agent being spiteful over arbitration last year. He dragged out Nylander negotiations to December 1 last year
