Seeing my fav pod at a D stings a little but fair enough as it was the first "cheap" full sized iPod, worse screen than the 3G with less stuff included. At least it charged over USB! I still love you Mono4G 💋
Thanks for visiting, captain! I admit that I neglected to account for how amazing and responsive the click wheel was on Mono4G. Maybe the best of any iPod.
Up until the iPod was finally cancelled, I always wished that Apple did one last hurrah for the Classic. Stick an SSD in it, give it an absolute tonne of storage, a great DAC, and make it a bit of a celebration of everything the iPod was. The Classic had a pretty big cult following towards the end of the iPod’s life and I’m kinda surprised they didn’t do something like this. Wouldn’t have sold tonnes but I feel like it would’ve made a lot of people very happy. I also had a 3rd gen nano. Amazing iPod and still one of my favourite ever Apple products (but my M1 Air is king).
I would buy that today. Make it industry leader in sound quality, give it a shit load of battery life, throw a little oled display on it, and terabyte at minimum. Market to audiophiles, DJs, and ipod cult nostalgists. I have always wanted a modern ipod just to keep in my car as a mini jukebox and when traveling (especially flights and overseas) where streaming is useless. Also would prevent me from wasting storage on music on my phone
The good news is there is a large modding scene for the 5th Video and 6th gen Classic iPods (5th is more popular as it is far easier to open up with the plastic front panel). There is a wide range of flash storage HDD replacements available that allow you to add TBs of storage (the iPod memory is the main limitation, i.e., 20,000/40,000 songs depending on the iPod), much bigger batteries than can give you weeks of playback time, and custom case colours Apple never produced.
Quinn, I think that I enjoy your Tier List videos the most (out of other channels’ lists), because you back it up with informed history of the devices, which make them extra-nostalgic and fun to see! Thank you!!
as a kid i was on a plane back from london, looking through a magazine and seeing the first gen ipod shuffle. I then looked at the floor and boom. just like magic it was lying there. I simply took it without asking anybody if they dropped/lost it and... was the happiest kid on that plane for sure. used it for many years and really loved that small thing. I really hope the owner didn't regret their loss that much and would have been proud of how much happiness this ipod brought me
We need Snazzy to do a deep dive into DACs on consumer electronics. Especially which ones to get in the Apple Universe for good music playback. Support the audiophiles out there!
Stop...99.9% of the population will not be able to discern the difference between a 'bad' DAC and a Wolfson DAC. Your headphones, Amp, and speakers etc will provide a much bigger difference in quality of music. It's like the high end AV stores selling $1000 cables as if anyone could tell the difference between that and a $100 cable
@@testme242 Dude. OP wasn’t asking for a £10,000 cable recommendation, or a 2 hour video essay detailing the how the Metallurgical Properties of Adamantium-Alloy improve soundstage width by 10 Picometers. Do the world a favour and turn the Tone-Nob on your Suck-Amp way down from 11 there bub. If a person is interested in buying a used iPod or dedicated music player from the massive range of 20 Brazillian models released over the last 25 years, it’s not unreasonable to think “Hey, a video by Snazzy that breaks down the Good, the Bad, and the Groovy of headphone DACs in said devices…might be interesting”. We all understand that the “Audiophile Market” is absolutely ridiculous SnakeOilsmanship, but that doesn’t mean that “any level whatsoever of audio quality” isn’t a thing some people are interested in, and it certainly doesn’t justify this screeching comment that reads like an Audio Dweebs final (Reddit Athiest) form.
This. For the longest time this confused me, especially when I was a kid desperate to try iOS 7. Although looking back I am kinda glad it stopped at iOS 6 because it both remained usable on its latest software update, and it is the only device I have with that old pre iOS 7 UI.
The 7th gen Nano is definitely a very flawed device. But there's just something about it... I don't know what it is, but I really like it. Still use mine fairly regularly.
It was the best nano to me, it just came at a time when it was irrelevant. I never bought one but there was one at the lost and found at work and I took it after a couple of years because clearly nobody was coming back. It’s a fantastic little device and F doesn’t do it justice :(
I find the 7th Gen a perfect jogging iPod because it's small, light and has Bluetooth for wireless headphones. I have 2 of 'em. I just wish there had been one with more storage.
So; there’s this one time mate... there’s this guy who does YT Videos... and he decided to put all the boyz on a tier list..and it was very sick and all, you know mate... and then he said he hates U2 and I felt offended because Bono is the best singer and yeah... I went after him, passed the last three weeks chasing his steps, mate... visited all the places he went and it got suspicious... they called a detective and, yeah mate, now I’m in jail!
I remember I bought an iPod touch 4th generation in a trip to the US in 2011. It was so far ahead of the flip phones of that era that it stunned me and a lot of friends from high school asked me to play games in that between classes. A few years after that the smartphone revolution swiped through, but the iPod touch will always be the device that blew my mind on what would become commonplace in the future.
I have a SD card modified 5.5G iPod Video and the DAC is just incredible. Super happy with the fact you gave it an S tier. My first iPod was a 2nd gen Touch and I was absolutely pissed that it never got iOS 4.3, because that's what Minecraft Pocket Edition needed. I even tried jailbreaking it to see if I could fake the version so it would install, I was that desperate as a kid. I remember enabling wallpapers that way and it ran just fine.
The 6th-gen Nano was my first Apple device. I bought it with my own money in first grade, I believe. It was so awesome. The first time I saw the low battery screen is a memory that is forever implanted into my brain: it was this white screen with (I think) two yellow danger icons (⚠️) and low battery icon in the middle with big text saying “LOW BATTERY. CHARGE NOW.” That was the most terrifying shit as a 6 year old. I ran away to my dad sobbing.
I loved the 4th generation Nano marketing as a kid. I thought the rainbow barf was such a unique way of advertising it. My funny story with it is that my middle school did a lot of art projects with students and the teacher on the walls around the time I went there, so there’s a mural of 4th gen Nanos by the office. It’s also right by a bunch of “self portraits” students did right before I got there, so around 2008-2009. And they’re all memes and stuff that was relevant at that time. So my middle school hallways are stuck in the mid-late 2000s 😂
I don’t understand how one can talk about the 7th gen nano without even mentioning Bluetooth. That’s the selling point more than the size, and makes it one of the best in a modern context along with the lightning port as a smartphone detox device.
I remember me and my brother getting the 4th gen iPod touch for Christmas. It was an absolute dream, the fact that I could play games on it, watch Netflix and UA-cam, use FaceTime to talk to people and take photos. It was my first ever introduction into the world of smart devices and was the stepping stone for fascination with technology and I’m forever thankful to my parents for gifting me with such technology as a kid.
After the classic change from 80/160GB to 120GB, does have one last edition bringing back 160GB if I remember correctly. Mine is still rocking after all those years.
You are correct, I said the same thing. I think it was the absolute last Classic they made. I still have mine as well and did a few upgrades to it too.
The first iPod Touch was my first “modern” Apple product. I got it in Kuwait during my first deployment before heading to Iraq. That thing with me on 3 deployments. I was amazed how fluid the touch interface was compared to other touch devices I had. Got me through a lot.
My personal favorite and the one I use the most is the 160GB 7th gen Classic, the final one of its lineage (with the software 2.0.5 only for it) - I got it at a local store for 70 bucks and I’ve named it “Golden Boy.”
So many memories. My dad still has half a dozen shuffles in his drawer. I forgot the buttonless shuffle. I remember selling it in the apple stores and everyone not liking it. The USB stick shufle was a huge hit for christmas.
Small correction at 20:50, there was a 7th gen 160GB model of the iPod Classic. It was slim and had the new DAC. The slim have the curved headphone jack, the fatter originals did not. If I recall this was the last iteration of the classic to ever be made.
I know how we listen to music is different now, but I still have my own music library and I wish Apple would bring back "Cover Flow" to the music app. It was just magical to me to scroll in that layout. I still use the "iTunes artwork" screensaver and EVERYONE comments on how cool it is and they never knew that it was a built-in option for over a decade. The way Steve talked about music in his presentations was with great passion and it showed in his UI choices.
To answer your question as to why the iPhone 4 was able to receive iOS 7 but iPod Touch 4th gen was not, it’s because the Touch only had half the RAM of the iPhone 4 (256MB vs 512MB). I remember this because I actually had a 4th gen Touch, and was super salty about being locked out of the flashy new design of iOS 7 at the time.
This year I won an iPod Classic, 120GB. I work in a Hotel and someday my boss found this extremely conserved iPod Classic, without the box, but with the original charger and charging dock and he told me "I was about to throw this away anyway, would you like to keep it?" and I didn't think twice. SOUNDS AMAZING. It's cool because I don't depend on my phone anymore to listen to music, so I don't need to take it when I'm out at a coffee shop. Of course, it's an extra device to do what my phone already does, but for me it's a Quality of Life improvement.
The 3rd gen iPod Shuffle is great if you have a compatible aux cable. It's the only iPod Shuffle that had a 4GB option. I would also like to add that there were 3 versions of the metal faceplate iPod Classic. 2007 80/160, 2008 120, and 2009 160. The difference between the 2008 and 2009 versions might seem negligible, but it's not negligible to modders! The 2009 160GB model is the only one that can be modded with more than 128GB of flash storage (yes, even the 2007 160GB model doesn't support 160GB flash storage).
I still use my 7th gen nano. The battery doesn't hold a good charge anymore, so I've attached it to a small battery bank. The best feature about this nano is the volume rocker and play/pause button on the side so I can change songs without looking at the screen. It's a nice feature when used in the car.
Gotta object to the fourth-gen iPod ranking - it improved the controls and enabled charging through USB! It was the first big iPod that people on any platform could use without compromises.
@@snazzy my 4th gen came with a power brick. In fact I still have it in my drawer here but haven't used it in ages since nothing uses firewire power anymore.
Nice thing about the mini is that the hard drive interface matches with a cf card. Popped mine open and replaced the drive with a 32gb card and it's snappy and great to use.
this felt more like looking at the evolution of modern UI of hardware devices. I really liked this video and learned a lot, Quinn explaining how good it was for devices each of it's time was so great to hear, because it one of the most important thing engineering wise, but also so easy to forget, what it was like back than. Wish more people could watch this video.
About the 6th/7th gen classics, I could be mistaking some details but apparently the crappier 6 gen came in both 80gb and 160gb capacity, whereas the better 7 gen (or revisioned 6 gen I guess) was available in 120gb and 160gb. Some sources I see refer to the 120gb as 6.5 gen lol; It's a lil convoluted as there is no true official generational distinction attached to the models by Apple. I got a 160gb 7 gen from the apple store mere months before it was discontinued circa 2014? And my main gripe was I preferred the true black shell of the 6 gen vs the space gray shell of the 7 gen that I got, plus the 6 was a lil chunkier which I found cuter 😅 in hindsight I'm glad I didn't get the 6 gen if it truly had those issues. I still use my 7gen today. I also feel vindicated that anyone else loves the 3rd gen nano, it's my fav.
Thank you for acknowledging my childhood. Still keeping my fingers crossed for an updated classic which supports lossless- I know it won’t happen but one can dream…
I had the nano 5 that I had won in a competition! Still feel nostalgic seeing it here. (Only because I lost it and was never able to get another 😢). Glad to see it make the A tier
I have a specially modded iPod. It's a 5th Gen with a 256GB flash mod and a 3,000mAh battery. It runs forever and with the Wolfson DAC, sounds pretty good. It also won't skip, because it's entirely solid state. I could have just gotten one of the last gen iPod Touch models, but what's the fun in that?
@12:42 -- I wondered if that could be really 4 millimeters, because the headphone jack is already 3.5 mm in diameter. According to wikipedia it's 6.9 mm
The iPod classic is actually 3 generations of iPod. The 6th gen is the 80gb and 160gb capacities, 6.5 gen is the 120gb with a better dac, and the 7th gen is a 160gb again but with an updated storage controller and a few other tweaks that enable it to be used with approximately 1TB of storage if you mod it. I have a 7th gen classic that I have 512gb of storage in, and an aftermarket battery. lasts like, a week plus and is great.
Huh. I didn't even know all this stuff was going on. I was a desk-bound freelancer when iPods were happening. As an all-Windows guy professionally, I steered clear of expensive Apple products. I listened to torrented MP3s all day on my PC. When the spowess decided to take extended morning walks circa 2007 or so, I got her a 1GB $40 Radio Shack MP3 player which lasted for maybe twelve years. Then I replaced it with a cheaper 32GB whatever brand equivalent from Amazon. iPod nostalgia is an opaque mystery. It's like longing for the toasters of your childhood
The absolute GRIP the iPod Touch 4th gen had on my late middle school - early high school days was insane. Anyone who wanted to be anyone had it. Being children at the time, most of us in my class had a hand-me-down flip phone and an iPod Touch. Very few kids had iPhones and that was basically god status. Just a few short years later we all got smartphones and the Touches were almost obsolete.
You forgot the 7th gen ipod classic 160gb. It has the thin design like the 120gb version but then with more storage. This was the most refined iPod Apple ever made imo. The battery life was great, screen was good, good DAC and so much storage in a slim design felt incredible.
12:52 is it's crazy & baffling that was Apple once fitted a headphone jack in a tiny 4mm thin device in 2005 - now it's bragging about space saving & design... Quite an example of rebellious to ridiculous.
Still use a couple of 5.5 and 6th generation ones for travel purposes and in my car as a music source The fact I can set up playlists for moods still makes me very happy
You are wrong about the iPod Touch’ calendar at 17:20 I got 2 of them. One of them is running 1.1.5 and YOU can add things to the calendar. There is a ‘+’ icon on the top right corner. Just checked it. It also came with 8GB storage, not only 16GB.
Raging at iPod Nano 7th getting an F tier. Sat here soaking in the bluetooth goodness right now in 2023 with my AirPods - even if it's the world's blandest UI. Great video though, love this stuff.
I’ve only ever had two iPods, an iPod 4th gen with a black and white screen, and an iPod touch 4th gen. The first one made school bus trips more bearable as I didn’t have to listen to the bus driver’s radio station choice. The second one lasted well after my time in college as my computer at the time couldn’t connect to the iPhone I had, so I was briefly rocking an iPod touch and an iPhone simultaneously. Once I upgraded to a new Mac, the iPod touch joined my retired tech.
I got my first and only Apple product in 2008, a 120 gb iPod classic. It was amazing to me that I could watch videos on a small portable device. I used it until 2017 when the hard drive broke.
my dad bought the iPod Photo for my fam and I remember being heavily confused on why It didnt play video since all my friends had the iPod Video, on the flip side he got it on clearance and it was a great for listening music
Even though I never had one, the first gen nano will always be my favorite iPod ever. Its design was absolutely insane for 2005, and it still looks pretty modern even today.
The iPod shuffle 2 was my first iPod at 7 years old. I recently found the charger for it and it still works!! I even accidentally put it through the wash and it still powers on 😱
3:52 So many fond memories of CompUSA. When they had their going out of business sale, my Dad bulk bought 5,000 DVD-R blanks. He was a *ahem*... "privateer" back in the day.
I think the early iPod touches are underrated here. They became the gateway drug to the iPhone; their excellence was for a slightly younger generation to get hooked and, by the time the iPhone 4S/5 came around, wouldn’t have dared have any other smartphone.
I got my 2gb 4th gen iPod shuffle in like 2012 or something and didn’t use it until a year and a half ago because i either didn’t know how to use it, didn’t have a way to put music on it, didn’t have music to put on it, or forgot about it. Once I got over all of that, i use it religiously. 370 songs at the moment and space for a few more, i love it
First of all: great video! But I have to say that the touch 1 hasn't aged badly at all (except that you need a PhD to open iTunes without it crashing), and everything runs very smoothly on iOS 3, the touch 4 or especially the touch 5 run much worse today. AppStore, Weather and Mail were also added via software update (although I understand iPods are ranked from a launch perspective). I use mine almost every day. I would also disagree with the Shuffle 1 because, like the Shuffle 2, unlike the Shuffle 3 and 4, it does not support podcasts. I have to say about the touch 2 that it was a huge update compared to the touch 1. Not only speakers and Bluetooth, but also mundane things like a volume rocker have been added here, which is why I think it should be ranked as high as the touch 1. Interestingly, iOS 4 that runs on the touch 2 is the only iOS version up to iOS 7 on which the iTunes store is still fully functional today. My rating is of course much more based on today's perspective and I'm not an audiophile either and hardly even rate sound quality.
27:01 I had one and can say the screen was not ips as the iphone4 and im pretty sure it had the ipad version of the a4 where the iphones a4 i believe had more ram for some reason? Might want to look into that as its probably why the iphone4 got ios7 while the 4th gen touch didn't. Oh and glad we didnt bring up the front camera only ipod touch lol.
That was fun and surprisingly affirming. I own 3 S-tier and 1 A-tier. Of that the 160GB thin Classic is my favorite and still used. It's just for audio. And I have a ton of audio NOT on any streaming service.
@@snazzy 3rd Gen 30 GB, I liked the display that worked in daylight without backlight, great in the car during the day and was my move up from mp3 CDs. 5th Gen 30 GB, I liked I could play video out to the TV. 4th Gen Touch, I got ostensibly to test web UX on iOS but of course I found a lot of uses for it personally.
It’s worth noting that the 7th iPod touch had the highest storage capacity option ever in an iPod with 256 GB. For that reason, I wouldn’t say it’s F-tier because there is still a logical reason to get it, as what Dankpods point out in his video on the 7th gen touch
-Last year I bought and flash modded Mini to use as my daily for in my truck. All in for like $40-50 excluding a micro SD card I had kicking around. -One interesting thing about the 1st vs 2nd Mini, 1st gen can be flash modded up to 128GB but 2nd can go up to 256GB, I think it has to do with more RAM in the 2nd -I still have my 6th gen 80GB Classic (flash modded to 128GB) as well, use that for travel since I don't want to daily it and leave it in my truck or at work. I guess I'm not discerning enough to tell, I never knew there was an issue with the DAC in it.
The reason why the ipod touch 4 didn't get ios 7 like the iPhone 4 was due to performance issues. It only had 256mb of memory compared to 512. I had one I bought myself as a kid and used it as an iPhone basically without the phone part. It was amazing.
I agree with everything on the list, except the iPod Nano 4th gen, it was the first with the oval shape and absolutely thin sides that seemed impossible, the colors were fun and it was overall very popular, i would have put it on B.
The biggest improvement between the 1st and 2nd gen iPod Touch is the addition of external volume controls. Putting the 2nd gen beneath the 1st gen is... strange.
The third jam was my first dad called my father. Bought it for me. 15 GB I still have it. It came in a box size of the Mac mini with everything was so awesome.
My first and only Apple product I had was an Ipod Nano 1st gen. I was so dissappointed when I realized the only way to fill it with songs is using the Itunes. For someone that was and is still today using mp3s on my Android phones this was such a waste of money. BUT then my friend told me about the Rockbox mod and it turned my Ipod into a beast which I used for many many years.
The 4th Touch not getting iOS 7 (together with original iPad) was because RAM limitations (256mb). It was kinda slow at iOS 6, i can't even imagine how slow would be with 7.
I really liked the design aesthetic of the 1-4 gen iPod touch models. I picked up a 4th gen to get the best functionality of that design. I think my favorite model is the 4th gen monochrome (my first iPod) for its simplicity and focus on just being a music player (there were a couple simple games, but for the most part this model is not too distracting. I also love the 1st and 2nd gen minis for their ease of upgradeability to flash storage.
I like the wrist strap loop on the iPod Touch 5th gen, I replicate this with a bungee type cage I pop over my iPhone when I am taking pictures on holiday; you'd be surprised at the number of times you're wanting to take a picture that if you dropped your phone at that time, you'd lose it - in a river, off a bridge, off a cliff, etc etc
I will never forget the magical feeling of my first iPod (4th gen). Something that wouldn't be replicated til my first iPhone (also 4th gen). Man, I miss those days.
One interesting thing about the 4th gen iPod Touch is that even though it had the same resolution as the iPhone 4, it had a TN display instead of an IPS, so the display looked quite a bit worse.
I had the privilege of owning several iPods throughout the years, but the 1st gen Mini is definitely my favorite. That blue glow from the screen makes me feel like a kid again.
The iPod touch 4 will have a special place in my heart because it was my first ipod as well as my first device that could connect to the internet. And 10 year old me couldnt be pried away from it despite my parents best efforts. I still have it despite the battery being completely dead and a cracked screen replacement. But it reminds me of simpler times
I got the 256mb 1gen shuffle for my 7th birthday. Probably one of my best gifts. Later I got a battery pack with two AAA Batteries inside which made it nearly impossible to not have enough power. Later I got the 3rd gen Nano, which I used to watch tons of video podcasts and play games.
My first iPod was the iPod Nano 6th Gen. Used it as both a watch and a music player. However, I fell out of love with it as I come out of my teens. But after seeing the iPod Touch being discontinued, I had decided to buy a second-hand iPod Touch to enjoy music again
i can't believe that the ipod that invented the clickwheel, had the first metal body, introduced colors, and was under $250 got ranked under a pod that had an exploding battery recall and one that had a button set up that nobody remembers and still needed firewire to charge.
I didn't see the thin tiny Ipod that I can recall. I had the square one with no screen and I use the Gen 4 on 2 of my Sharper Image VW bugs as the speakers ( I wish they had upgraded that because it looks cool on a desk ). These went everywhere with me to play my music I got off of UA-cam with an app that removes the video and music from my 600+ cd collection. I have an Iphone 7 but it has very little music on it. I love my Ipods.
I had a 120GB Classic, bought it to replace my Creative Zen Touch where the touch controls eventually died over the years (but outside of that was an absolute TANK in the beatings it could take from young me dropping it) - even got a bumper case to protect it and what not, it dropped for like half a meter once off of a table and was instantly dead. The Classic was the moment where I've decided to never buy Apple products again, lol.
But there's one problem with your explanation of the classic, there was a 160 GB version of the classic (also called the 7th gen) released in 2009. That one and the aforementioned 120 GB model are the only ones that work with an in-line remote, and for me, that is a huge plus.
I posted a short about my iPod recently and now I am binging content! this video is great! I loved my iPod but I didn't get one until the 5th generation. I'm going to bring mine back to life.
i have a 7th gen nano and while it is disappointing compared to earlier iPods it is good enough, it did come standard with 16gb which was nice but that was the only capacity. also something great about most iPods is that in BMW cars and cars made by BMW like MINI it has great software support in the sense that you can plug your iPod in and control it from the car, you can even individually browse songs and playlists.
Seeing my fav pod at a D stings a little but fair enough as it was the first "cheap" full sized iPod, worse screen than the 3G with less stuff included. At least it charged over USB!
I still love you Mono4G 💋

We all understand that the “Audiophile Market” is absolutely ridiculous SnakeOilsmanship, but that doesn’t mean that “any level whatsoever of audio quality” isn’t a thing some people are interested in, and it certainly doesn’t justify this screeching comment that reads like an Audio Dweebs final (Reddit Athiest) form.
The 4th Gen iPod Touch not getting iOS 7 update is because of its 256mb of RAM, just like the 1st gen iPad. The iPhone 4 comes with 512mb.
Was about to post this. The thing really struggled at times on iOS 6, let alone 7. (I did have it jailbroken, so that didn't help.)
Was gonna type this. Also that iPod is still usable today, which I can’t say for iPhone 4 😅
Exactly, I was looking for this comment
I bet if it did run iOS 7, he'd still dock it points for not running well.
I still own 5 7th gen nano they were a dime a dozen at conferences
It was the best nano to me, it just came at a time when it was irrelevant. I never bought one but there was one at the lost and found at work and I took it after a couple of years because clearly nobody was coming back. It’s a fantastic little device and F doesn’t do it justice :(
My dumbass younger self broke my nano 7th gen and I still want to go back in time and strangle him.
I find the 7th Gen a perfect jogging iPod because it's small, light and has Bluetooth for wireless headphones. I have 2 of 'em. I just wish there had been one with more storage.
@Geogre Ipod nano 7th gen came with bluetooth 4.0 so you can actually use wireless headphones with it
i think DankPods would approve of your presentation, well done.
I came here just to see if he commented on it yet. He’s kind of the unofficial iPod guy.
Needs more 1Grit.
ipod 4 on D would anger him though
@@xypod i came here to say just that. ipod 4 is great, D is a harsh rating of it
I remember I bought an iPod touch 4th generation in a trip to the US in 2011.
Yup I think the 5.5G is missing in the list as a separate iPod.

A girl in my HS used to pretend her iPod touch was an iPhone till someone asked to make a call on it
She never recovered from that

When Apple recalled the 1st gen nano my wife opted in for a replacement and they sent her a 6th gen nano. Pretty nice upgrade.
Felt like a proud dad when you were praising the 3rd Gen. nano. That thing NEVER left my side all throughout my middle school days - good times
Just dropping by to let you know, a year later, you inspired me to do the same. It looks great!
The first Apple device I ever owned was a 7th-generation iPod Nano. I loved that thing.
My iPod Touch 4th generation was my first portable smart device. Absolutely loved that thing.
28:59:
I think the wrist stap purpose was, that you could use the device as a compact camera alternative.
Gotta object to the fourth-gen iPod ranking - it improved the controls and enabled charging through USB! It was the first big iPod that people on any platform could use without compromises.
Charging through USB is nice, true; however, up until the 4th gen, they had included a power supply in the box, no?
@@snazzy my 4th gen came with a power brick. In fact I still have it in my drawer here but haven't used it in ages since nothing uses firewire power anymore.
@@snazzy It did have an AC adapter! I was enough of a fan to have photos of the underside of the box. Had both USB and FireWire cables as well.
Still keeping my fingers crossed for an updated classic which supports lossless- I know it won’t happen but one can dream…
iPod Classic does support lossless files. It's called alac

Still use a couple of 5.5 and 6th generation ones for travel purposes and in my car as a music source
The fact I can set up playlists for moods still makes me very happy
Glad to know which ones have good dacs and which ones don’t. I didn’t know that. Makes me want to get a 1st gen Shuffle!
I used so many great iPods, but my S tier would definitely have to be iPod Touch 4th Gen, iPod Mini 1st Gen, iPod Nano 2nd Gen, & iPod Classic 6th Gen

Great video though, love this stuff.
probably the most unfair rating in the video
I’ve only ever had two iPods, an iPod 4th gen with a black and white screen, and an iPod touch 4th gen. The first one made school bus trips more bearable as I didn’t have to listen to the bus driver’s radio station choice. The second one lasted well after my time in college as my computer at the time couldn’t connect to the iPhone I had, so I was briefly rocking an iPod touch and an iPhone simultaneously. Once I upgraded to a new Mac, the iPod touch joined my retired tech.
4th gen iPod touch was limited by RAM. It only had 256MB, unlike the iPhone 4 that had 512MB.
Haha! The Photo/Video switcharoo.
Thirty minute video to watch someone piss all over the only three iPods I’ve ever had. What are the odds?
The A4 SoC in the iPod touch actually had half the RAM of the iPhone version. That's probably why it never received iOS 7 like the iPhone 4.
This is likely correct. An oversight on my part! Nice catch.
not to mention iOS 7 ran poorly on iPhone 4, I wouldn't want that for my Touch 4 anyway...iOS 6 was solid
Even though I never had one, the first gen nano will always be my favorite iPod ever. Its design was absolutely insane for 2005, and it still looks pretty modern even today.
The iPod shuffle 2 was my first iPod at 7 years old. I recently found the charger for it and it still works!! I even accidentally put it through the wash and it still powers on 😱
11:52 "a measly 512 *g i g a b y t e s*"

3:52 So many fond memories of CompUSA. When they had their going out of business sale, my Dad bulk bought 5,000 DVD-R blanks. He was a *ahem*... "privateer" back in the day.
Hahaha amazing
Nice. What are the others? Cheers!
As a green day fan I LOVE TO SEE APPLES LOVE for green day
-Last year I bought and flash modded Mini to use as my daily for in my truck. All in for like $40-50 excluding a micro SD card I had kicking around.
-One interesting thing about the 1st vs 2nd Mini, 1st gen can be flash modded up to 128GB but 2nd can go up to 256GB, I think it has to do with more RAM in the 2nd
-I still have my 6th gen 80GB Classic (flash modded to 128GB) as well, use that for travel since I don't want to daily it and leave it in my truck or at work. I guess I'm not discerning enough to tell, I never knew there was an issue with the DAC in it.
22:53 3rd gen shuffle has mass storage support. I just plugged it to my computer and it showed up as a disk just fine.
Putting the 2nd gen beneath the 1st gen is... strange.
Thanks for this man! I was looking at getting a Classic to relive my childhood but now I know WHICH classic 😂
I think giving the iPod nano seventh after is the worst thing you could do I am so mad at you. Please change it man. 29:27
Plus it’s my favorite :)
2nd gen mini massively improved the battery life. This alone makes me think it should swap places with 1st gen
Yay for someone else who loves the 3rd gen Nano. So many people seem to hate on this iPod but I love it!
The first iPod shuffle is the only iPod I’ve ever had. I really loved it so I was overjoyed to see it on s tier
9:32 Rare snazzy L. Black in red IS a cool color combo. You're right about U2 tho.
I agree with every single placement. Amazing list. Koss KSC75 and my 1st Generation iPod Shuffle still get play time every week.
yes, the ksc75 are awesome
I posted a short about my iPod recently and now I am binging content! this video is great! I loved my iPod but I didn't get one until the 5th generation. I'm going to bring mine back to life.
i have a 7th gen nano and while it is disappointing compared to earlier iPods it is good enough, it did come standard with 16gb which was nice but that was the only capacity. also something great about most iPods is that in BMW cars and cars made by BMW like MINI it has great software support in the sense that you can plug your iPod in and control it from the car, you can even individually browse songs and playlists.
What a beautiful trip down memory lane, oh how I miss the simplicity of the early 2000s when everything was so new and cool, amazing amazing video!!!
This was one of my favorites in a while-- Going to find my nano 1st gen to check the DAC quality
