  • This is a PSA, when performing electrical circuit checks using piercing probes, please make sure that you're resealing each circuit your testing so that the wire integrity continues to provide long life. This is an actual case study about a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban that became disabled and went through a terrible service ordeal because of one small hole created in a wire.

Thanks for sharing the public service announcement. As long as techs dont seal their holes we have job security!

Thank you Scott for posting this exceptionally relevant video.
From the senior tech that's in a big hurry on Friday evening, to the inexperienced DIY'r with a piercing probe, or a cheap test-light, visually seeing the damaging results of not sealing up a probed wire is an eye-opener! As a (now retired) 30+ year tech, many as a dealer tech, I have probed many a wire during the diagnostic process, I'll admit that I didn't seal up every breach of insulation. Either from getting side tracked & forgetting to, or being in a hurry & smearing a little silicone grease on it, after viewing this video, I'll be much more mindful of how I'm going to handle this in the future.
    Thanks again!

Great job Scott and absolutely true that once done probing to seal up the wire. Though these vehicles will do this without ever piercing a wire in the Rust Belt states. The fuse boxes on these also love to corrode internally. Have to love the eastern part of the country vehicles. We see lots of rust and corrosion.

Though these vehicles will do this without ever piercing a wire in the Rust Belt states." How true. Numerous GM products with rotted conductors and apparently unmolested insulation.

That’s a big hole looks like it may have been pierced with a test light not a small piercing probe nevertheless should have been sealed LOL

I try not to pierce. We need to sometimes. I prefer brush on super glue. I have no idea if it's the best, but it's easy and also clear (maybe that's a downfall). I worked with someone that jabbed everything with a test light and definitely didn't reseal anything. I remember showing him some green crusties from stabbing with a test light on a trailer light system that he had looked at previously and the point never got through. I left that shop for several reasons, that tech's attitude being one.

Are the fuel pump and ECM cost the responsibility of the owner when it's a wrong diagnosis?

Bert Baca The customer let us know that the other shop did not charge him for the fuel pump or the ECM replacement.
