Wow John, the road/bridge scene really came together well. If you are still concerned that the long unsupported span is unrealistic, you could always put piers on both sides of the tracks midway up the embankments, rather than a single pier in the middle between the tracks. It's pretty common in the 1:1 world.
Thanks Paul, that's a great idea. I think I am going to just live with it, I am not that concerned about the span...at the angle we view it, it does not look that long.
Thank you Boomer. I like to have a lot of different things on hand, nature is so random and there are so many different species of plants in a given area that I think we need significant variety to try and approximate the look of it it.
The static grass certainly seems to have lived up to your expectations John. Also a great job with those highway pavement sections. Looking forward to seeing how that aquarium mat comes out after the spray booth treatment. Thanks again for a well-produced video.
Thanks Art! It did, now I just need to learn how to make it "less perfect" and more natural! I'm also keen on the aquarium mat as that is a very cheap alternative to traditional mats - if it works.
John The Mat Master. I remember catching your first mat video the wife and I watched in amazement how you transformed it. The static stuff looks great. You get what you pay for some times. Mike
Thanks Mike, I appreciate that. It's all about layering in different materials and textures - one of the things I need to work on in this initial section of static grass I applied! you do for sure get what you pay for.
Good update. You convinced me to get a better static grass applicator. I just got my new benchwork set up in my “Train Room”. Just installed LEDs under the benchwork and laid the pink foam in sections that can be moved if need be. It looks like we’ll be in the Portland area longer than we’ve been in other locations so we’ll see. Would you let us know the brand you bought of an applicator. I like what it did. Have a great weekend. Stay well. Tim
Thanks Tim - so this was done with the Woodland Scenics Static King, and the separate power adapter for wall power. no batteries, here! Glad to hear you have some benchwork up and going!
Now to help you ruin your nice green mat... I have watched people install artificial turf in front yards. One thing the do now is vibrate sands and or dirt into the top of the artificial turf. This removes the astro turf look and makes it look like real grass with he darker sand and or dirt placed vibrated into the turf fibers. Now that you have this stuff, I will give you my idea of adding dirt texter in and over the grass fibers then vibrating it into the mat. I was planning on using this technic for static grass bushes to make the fibers look more imbedded into the surrounding earth.
Thanks Eric! And I am sure I am making plenty! I like the idea of adding some dirt in, and I may also mess around with adding some additional leaf flock to some parts of the grass. All just experimenting with ways to form a "less perfect/more natural" turf.
It's really good - I have only used this and a small flyswatter type...not the static king vs other higher end ones. but vs the flyswatter, this was great.

Wow, that grass is sooooo satisfying to look at. Great job!!!
It really is! I hope my enthusiasm came across in the video =)
Looks like you have a great start! I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Micheal's mat turns out. ~Dennis
Thanks Dennis! If it works as I hope, a very cheap alternative there for sure!
Nice scenery inventory you have building up there.. Those "tufted" terrarium mats look awesome as well. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Looks great John! Yeah that bridge looks good without that center support. - Jason
It does - great thought Jason!
Well John you have me fully convinced that I need a better quality static grass applicator! The scene is looking amazing.
Thanks - worth it in my opinion!

I'm here for your mistakes, So I know, not what to do :)

The static grass looks great John, really makes the scene come to life! Can't wait to get a static king myself. How do you like yours? Cheers Brian
