Bianca (Mae Whitman) may not be the most popular at Malloy High School, but her friends are.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Emotionally devastated after learning that she's secretly referred to as "The DUFF" (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by the entire student body, high-school senior Bianca (Mae Whitman) dismisses the cautionary advice of her favorite teacher (Ken Jeong), turns her back on her longtime crush Toby (Nick Eversman), and enlists the help of charismatic jock Wesley (Robbie Amell) to help salvage what's left of her senior year. As the once-contented senior wages a monumental struggle to regain her confidence, she gradually turns her efforts toward knocking cruel class queen bee Madison (Bella Thorne) from her throne up on high. I love the way they portrayed their friendship. They could’ve gone the cliche backstabbing, bitchy best friends route but they made them very nice and understanding people.

Yea this movie as cringe as it is by today's standards, actually has a quite uplifting message. The speech at the end about how there's always gonna be someone better and acknowledging that the fmc pushed her genuine friends away because of her own insecurities is way better than the usual "you're not like others, you're special" spiel most teenage movies use. The worst thing at the end is that the guy actually kisses her, the message would have been stronger if he stayed with shallow popular girl due to fear of social standards while she grew self aware.

nah not really, it shows at the end that that's exactly what you shouldn't do. she became paranoid her friends were using her as the ugly friend, and then realized at the end she let the insecurities get the better of her, and isolated herself from her friends for no reason. she built up her own self confidence, and once she was able to finally be happy being herself was when she was happy.

Idk I think the point of the movie was that it doesnt matter who youre with (friend group-wise) theres always someone being compared. That even the prettiest girls when compared externally might be considered "the ugliest one". Bianca made a point later in the movie that even if the most popular hot girl at their school was compared to models or movie stars (Bella Thorne) it doesnt matter how beautiful she is, she would still be "the ugliest". In the end of the day you are beautiful period.
This part of the movie is just part of her arc where Bianca still believes that she still needs to somehow make herself distinct from her friends (thus the pick-me vibes/not like other girls) because she feels she needs to compensate for not having what she believes her friends have "At least im smart"
I love how literally every girl dresses like Bianca when she is first introduced.

I know Wesley explained that someone does not have to be ugly, fat, etc. to be a DUFF, but it was really hard to take Bianca seriously when she was saying stuff like “a guy like you would not be friends with a girl like me.” There was absolutely nothing off-putting about Bianca, and she was just as beautiful as her friends. The movie missed the mark in that regard.

It's an amazing story about self esteem, body image, relationships, family crisis, not caring what others think and so much more. The producers of this movie turned a wonderful story into a piece of shit movie that's exactly like we've seen before. It's like a shit version of she's all that or any number of similar romcoms. If you're a fan of the book don't waste your money or your time
