Nice to see a designer excited and proud of his design. This is what car makers need to bring back. Passion, creativity and designers who actually like cars.
VW, please bring this car to USA, a lot of us here in USA are not into SUVs. Back in the early 90s, my fist 2 cars in my life, a 1974 beetle and a 1982 golf. Since then, I fell in love with the golf. Having owned mk1, mk3 vr6, mk5 gti, mk7.5 rabbit edition and now a manual mk8 r, this electric gti would be perfect as my first electric car. Please make it happen! 😊
VW made a huge mistake by not bringing the ID3 to the US, as an id4, golf, and atlas owner I would have loved to own the id3 instead of my golf mk7. A lot of id4 owners would love to pair the id4 with the id3 or id2.
What a stunning design: the wheels(!!), the stance, the profile, tow hooks, diffuser. All are amazing…just wish they could all make the production version 🤞🏾.
It looks fantastic! I used to have a GTI 337 and Audi A3 and this thing could make me buy another. I hope it does not change from this to final production.
Conclusion, VW killed their own sales until 2027. Like with the ID buzz, I waited for many years, finally went for a Tesla M3 (now MY) and the consumers got a lousy compromise, many of the features we loved in the concept car gone. I don’t care about concept cars anymore due to the Buzz fiasco.
I know the feeling. We had a Nissan Leaf in 2015 to 2017. Fine at what it did but we knew we'd want more. Towards the end of the lease, nothing from Nissan to replace it. We could have been a captive market for it when the Leaf 2 concept was shown but the actual one that arrived was boring. I liked the concept one. We went away and waited. Now In Model Y and very happy with it.
Very similar to me, I waited years for the ID buzz only to find out it was extremely expensive, I'd never be able to afford it, had to settle for a Model 3 although I'm really happy with it specially with having access to the Tesla Superchargers and the many very useful smart software features that I think are unique to Tesla, after getting used to them I could never live without. I think I'll never wait for a VW concept to become reality, I'll believe it when I see it and see the price too.
It seems VW have got their mojo back with the ID2. The ID3 was way too much like a Nissan Leaf to appeal to most people. In any trim the ID2 will sell well. VW really needs that after all the negativity around their transition into electric cars.
Their transition into electric is causing them to be in absolutely massive debt. After the emissions scandal. They really can't get back up right from it. Atm, vw isn't looking good. They had to cancel their dedicated ev plant in Germany because they simply can't afford it. We'll see what happens. Ev isn't the future either. It's a stupid alternative. Just my opinion 🤷
How a huge manufacturer can take another 4 years to bring a small hatchback to market is just ridiculous. How far will the Chinese manufacturing have moved on by then. I just don't see why this is even news worthy
A word for VW IDs ...is. WAIT. WAIT. WAIT. WAIT. WAIT then wait some more ...then hear that they will be available in the showrooms the year after next ....😢😢😢😢.... by then i will have purchased an MG or something similar....😅😅😅
Beautiful machine Ginny, no doubt will be a massive hit. However i bought a new Mk1 Gti in 1980. Finished in Mars Red ( proper red ), no pas,a/c,abs,sat nav,e/w or reversing camera. What it did have was character though with the sound and my god it built your mussels when parking it. Raced it successfully but briefly. Those were the days, nothing beats the original as they say.
I really don’t like the ridiculous prices of EV’s but definitely have a soft spot for this! Used to have a 16V Mark 2 back in the day which was an absolutely fabulous car. Not sure if an EV version will be able to re-create the GTi thrills but love the concept!
I had the mk1 and the mk2 8v, I love the look of this but I just can’t see those tiny front brakes making for a fun and engaging ride through the turns. It will definitely give the pull away feel of the mk2 8v as mine would not spin the wheels unless it was wet, this has to be an engaging fun drivers car or they will kill off the gti heritage for good
INitial price is higher. But I have saved about $1200 per year on gasoline and maintenance costs with my EV. After 5 years, that is 6 grand. That pretty much negates the higher initial cost.
@@LouisDuran I agree in the immediate moment of purchase the cost seems too high but, when worked out correctly for your lifestyle and usage the savings can be more than enough to negate that difference, then there’s the other savings like service and maintenance too, many don’t do enough real well thought out research when looking at making the switch to electric, they see the initial higher cost and that’s all, which is a little ironic being as most wont do more the 50 miles a day and most EVs will manage that with range to spare.
how many people keep their ev for 3+? very few and the moment u want to sell it, you are still losing money while driving because of the high depreciation, so no it does not neglates the higher initial cost@@LouisDuran
Absolutely love this , especially in silver. It will be very expensive here in Ireland 🇮🇪. I know they can’t snap their fingers and make it happen, but 2027 is a a very long time away 😢
Looks good, but they shouldn't show us a concept so many years away from release. They should have the vehicles almost ready for production when they show us
The original was ground breaking. Unfortunately by the time this one arrives it’ll probably be coming to an already crowded marketplace with warmed over versions of nostalgia EVs like the new Renault 5 ( and no doubt Peugeot attempts at injecting some 205 GTi vibes) not to mention MG convertibles etc. They need to speed up that timeline!
so i read an article last year saying that EVs will be the same price as the Ice equivalent by 2025 will be interesting to see if that's the case when this goes on sale
If this would ever actually come to market (as is) in the US it would be a game changer just in design alone! I remember when I first saw a Mk6 GTI on the back of a truck, I thought - I had to have one!!!!...and I still dive that car today! What I didn't understand at the time was how I would fall in love with that car, I bought it only knowing it had killer good looks. The performance (fun to drive) for the price was what made it my love, and that is what needs to be captured in this new GTI. Take note of the up and coming Ioniq 5 N,....a little drama for something simple! SOUND!
Lets hope it has physical climate, or at least backlit sliders, if it goes into production, also touchscreen actually works no lag and frozen screen, that why I went from Golf GTi 7 to mark 8 and then back to 7.5 my tech in MK8 just did not work
Beautiful, sanity is returning to car design. Small, compact, agile and classy, no fashion dents, no swollen tacky grill and badge on the front and the best bit, it's not an SUV.
Looks great and like you Ginny, wish it was here sooner. For me, the main thing that I hope VW sort out is the touchscreen software which on all the other VW EV's is awful!
I had the fortune of "inheriting" the drive of a MkIV 8v then 16v GTi at work decades ago and I'm going to be a heretic and say I can't remember much about the sound of the engine - for me it was the steering feel and the handling of the front end and how connected I felt to the road and what was going on. Back then above a certain speed you couldn't hear anything above wind and tyre noise because reliable door seals are a modern invention!! As I've got older I no longer enjoy the drone of a 6 hour motorway drive with a sports exhaust from the back with accompanying induction roar of a free flowing filter from the front; but do miss the agility of a lighter car - I was never good enough to lift the inside rear wheel of a GTi but loved their handling and hope VW bring this to their smaller electric cars. My ID.3 has good handling and excellent power - just needs a little more agility in direction changes and a little more body control. I like the idea of my ID.3 being rear driven but all of my other cars have been front wheel drive..
Love the looks of this and all the small playful details that makes it a GTI. I was about to lose hope in VW but the ID2 and now this GTI is for sure a bright future to look forward to!
How can this be a GTI if it's an electric? It's supposed to have injectors in the engine, that's why it's called GTI (Grand Touring Injection). It should have been called GTE intstead.
@@MrOriol24 It's as reasonable as Porches top version of their electric model Taycan is named Turbo. The old meaning is lost and now it's just a sporty branding. I'm not too fund of it either but I think VW love their GTI heritage.
This is the first EV design I actually like. They should make a petrol version as well and an option for a towbar. Then this would really a car for all people
This is taking so long to bring to market…it makes me wonder where the competition will be bay the time this is available…nice but too little too late?
Well it's definitely an improvement over the recent designs like the Mk8 Golf, but all this ceremonial pomp and circumstance is going to be in service of nothing if it isn't sold outside of Europe.
4 years. 4 years. Who cares about a concept car when it won’t be available for 4 years. I’ve said this on other output, If this was a Chinese company it would be available next year, not in 4 years time. And the Chinese version would be right first time, with software that works properly.
Hopefully, given the state of battery/motor/control tech, the range will be finally acceptable by the time it's ready (and I'm guessing this is why it will take so long). AND the cost will be more in line with where it has sat in the lineup since the beginning.
@@jeremyradford5103400+. Why? 1. Because gasoline GTI’s right now can get 500 miles on one tank of gas on road trips (I own one so I would know). 2. Because nobody ever gets the marketed range in their EV’s. So if it’s marketed at 400 miles, you’re really only getting 300-320 miles at the most. 3. Because if you’re on a road trip, even if you could get 300 miles out of a full charge, due to the limited number of charging stations, you would really have to stop every 150 miles so that you don’t go so low on a charge before the next charging station. But having a realistic 300-320 miles of range, you might, just might, be able to skip a charging station and make it to the next one, which would reduce the number of times you need to stop and charge on a road trip. That could save you hours of charging times! The pueny 250 mile range cars are literally only good for city driving, and that’s just crap. Especially considering the gasoline GTI is an amazing city AND road trip vehicle.
I absolutely hate electric car's and have said I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole..... UNTIL I seen this bad boy 😍....I will definitely swap my mk8 gtd for this if it's released....looks stunning 😁
If they can deliver on that concept and at the right price, they could well have a massive jit on their hands. But, I just hope the infotainment systems does not let it down.
I’ll buy it if it gets enough horsepower because I think everything with its looks are perfect!! Don’t need fake sound. I can blast real 1:29 music from the past when I’m driving it around town… And I would marry Ginny in a heartbeat because she knows her way around cars and looks absolutley BEAUTIFUL!!!❤❤❤
That’s going to be a tough one, because gasoline GTI’s aren’t that powerful from the factory. But once you tune them, they become V8 killers with a simple tune and downpipe. You won’t be able to tune an EV to get more power, and that’s going to be a big letdown going EV, because currently, tuning and performance is a huge deal with gasoline GTI’s. It’s a big reason why people buy them.
This looks fantastic. The first EV I've seen that makes me think maybe I could be tempted to buy an EV one day. But 2027 is a long time for them to fook about with the concept and dilute it before it goes into production. Needs to have a decent range as well.
I would have love if the electric gti was in the design of the older gti square looking a bit. Don’t take me wrong the current design is very sporty and nice but it would’ve been nice if it had the new technology with the older body style from the 1970 so like that it would be like a special edition or something like that. I currently have the 2019 VW egolf and I love it. Low mile range 125-140 but I hope the new one has an over 200 range
We just need it to have lots of power and all wheel drive fck front wheel drive. After market support for power programing for the dual motors for more power and suspension mods of course.
Reminds me at least straight away of the mk7 designs here and their probably because if sold so well and many people myself included enjoyed the look of the car however It's going to be awhile, and it might get beaten by other manufacturers I hope not, but we will see still nice looking car overall better than the I.D to be honest.
I have to admit it looks stunning and glad a possibilities to see 3 door version is coming back, but it’s sad to say goodbye to customizing your cars in terms of tuning.
Andreas explained everything about the car so enthusiastically that he could be the sales guy! Love it. But Ginny, did you really say "a top speed of 100 miles per hour"? *sigh* They gotta be kidding, have they learnt literally nothing?
This looks as special as the OG mk1 gti looked back in the day if not better, love the rear door setup and the wheels BUT I would definitely say it’s going to need bigger brakes, the fronts look tiny and definitely not enough to give confidence for Broad track attack fun
Never been a VW fan, always thought over hyped and way over priced, I do however think this looks real nice, but….. I was stunned to to hear a guy standing near Ginny and the car, describe the CAR as beautiful !😂
Just the car I have been waiting for. Just one issue, please VW get rid of the two different size tablet screens, in favour of a lower, wider display (Polo). I'm waiting, money stands by.
Gosh what a great looking car, I am so happy to see VW is not throwing away their wonderful heritage they have made with the Golf GTi over the many generations. A great presentation too between the presenter and designer; he has one of the best jobs in the world!
Having owned 3 mk1 GTI’s and a Mk2 I would swap my Passat estate for a new one of the these not sure I could wait until 2027 The original mk2 with the 4 speed gearbox and steel wheels was epic in 1979
I wish they found a way to make it as visceral as the original but still an authentic ev. No simulated stuff. Instead amplified. Or maybe a couple of gears like the Porsche taycan. But I understand the need to make it affordable.
It does look ready for production right now. I’d like to see the silly “no step” graphic gone though. It seems at odds with the idea of dropping the “boy racer” perception.
I hate to say it, but it really doesn't feel very ID to me. I think in interviews the VW designers have said that they want their new cars to look more like really VW range cars, which i'm not sure is entirely the issue with why they're struggling to shift cars - I would say those core issues are more down to the software and quality of finish. For me, this just feels a bit like a new generation Polo with the ID badge kinda bolted on the end. I like the fact that ID cars are a bit different and a bit more unique than the regular range, even if they do feel a little plain in some aspects, so the ID.2 and ID.GTI probably wouldn't be for me.
The production version will be toned down quite a lot, remember the scirocco concept and the production version? would be cool to see something like the GTI on the streets, but i guess it will loose some of the agressive styling
No rear door handles!!! Excellent. I hate rear door handles. Rear door handles says “married, got kids and I go shopping in it”. 2 door handles says “IT’S MINE!!.
Whatever you say. It remains an electrical appliance. I don't have a quartz watch for the same reason - I have a mechanical watch. Good luck with your new 'appliances'.
Well done VW. This something that will actually fit I’m garage and do the stuff we all do everyday but but but why do we have to wait so long? Is it going to have new lightweight battery technology? If not it will be out of date compared to the Chinese car manufacturers so VW can’t wait that long and need to burn a lot of midnight oil and bring it to market ASAP.
Waiting for very fast hot hatch EV. Like sub 4 or even 3.5s acceleration. Could this be it? Alpine based on R5 EV? Upcoming Tesla 2? Someone take my money?
Lovely, seems like VW cool EVs are only about to come out. Gotta wait. Also, about the sound, could be cool to hear an MK1 sound, but probably fun for 15mins not for everyday

Not a fan of Tesla’s and other EV’s but owning past GLI’s GTI’s and now a Golf R I’m tempted and prepared to buy!
I absolutely hate electric car's and have said I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole..... UNTIL I seen this bad boy 😍....I will definitely swap my mk8 gtd for this if it's released....looks stunning 😁
Take. My. Money.
Hurrah…an electric VW that looks great. Excellent.
The front looks like a renault clio hope the build quality's not like a renault with all the vw cost cutting lol
Take my money already!!! sheeesh....what an absolutely fantastic design. VW hit this one out of the park.
Thank you. It will be interesting to see what VW will turn out in a few years. Hopefully they will keep the skin. Looks good.
Looking amazing ❤
If they can deliver on that concept and at the right price, they could well have a massive jit on their hands. But, I just hope the infotainment systems does not let it down.
Why is it GTI - injection....and not GTE?
There already is a gte in Europe
I’ll buy it if it gets enough horsepower because I think everything with its looks are perfect!! Don’t need fake sound. I can blast real 1:29 music from the past when I’m driving it around town…
And I would marry Ginny in a heartbeat because she knows her way around cars and looks absolutley BEAUTIFUL!!!❤❤❤
After market support for power programing for the dual motors for more power and suspension mods of course.
best looking VW ever!
Reminds me at least straight away of the mk7 designs here and their probably because if sold so well and many people myself included enjoyed the look of the car however It's going to be awhile, and it might get beaten by other manufacturers I hope not, but we will see still nice looking car overall better than the I.D to be honest.
Great work team
the man clearly loves his job ! cool
That smiley "grill"...Good evening ladies and gentlemen, we are tinihjts entertainment....Heath Ledger would have loved it...🥰
I imagine the gti version will be £40k+ and it needs alot more power than they are on about, will have to be better than the MG4 xpower
I have to admit it looks stunning and glad a possibilities to see 3 door version is coming back, but it’s sad to say goodbye to customizing your cars in terms of tuning.
Loving the look. The cars aren't too bad either.
Very nice design
Looks great but 4/5 years away?
Andreas explained everything about the car so enthusiastically that he could be the sales guy! Love it.
But Ginny, did you really say "a top speed of 100 miles per hour"? *sigh* They gotta be kidding, have they learnt literally nothing?
It's so good looking.
The Mk1 Golf GTI is now turning in its grave...
Ginny is the real show stopper here.
VW needed to do the concealed rear doors on Mk 7 and Mk 8 Golfs! Miss the sportier 2 door look!
Get this to the states !!!
We will have to see what price they want for this little beauty
The production version will be toned down quite a lot, remember the scirocco concept and the production version? would be cool to see something like the GTI on the streets, but i guess it will loose some of the agressive styling
I would get the model with the sound
No rear door handles!!! Excellent. I hate rear door handles. Rear door handles says “married, got kids and I go shopping in it”. 2 door handles says “IT’S MINE!!.
Greetings from Canada this ev will arrive here according to the Canadian website
I hope there will be an R version with 4 wheel drive and more power!
Whatever you say. It remains an electrical appliance. I don't have a quartz watch for the same reason - I have a mechanical watch. Good luck with your new 'appliances'.
Wow, VW has found a way to fuel inject an electric car. Must be electronic fuel injection, i guess 😊
This and the R5 are really good looking compact cars. It's about time! Bored of the compact SUV's.
Lovely, seems like VW cool EVs are only about to come out. Gotta wait.
Also, about the sound, could be cool to hear an MK1 sound, but probably fun for 15mins not for everyday
