techfreshness I moved to Malta and there is a huge skills gap in IT over here, part of the problem was young children didn’t have exposure to computers, coding and general digital literacy skills. So as part of our business we built an 8 seat classroom and run accredited 11 week coding courses for children from 7 to 16 years old using Minecraft education, Sphero and micro:bit.

oh man! you have a useability testing company, that is yours? that is a huuuge passion of mine actually, i've always been so so interested in it, i used to read useit.com and some other ui blogs at my old finance job all the time. read the everyday design of things too. have you always been into usability? I've never really met anyone in the field before and i have always felt like i could have been really great at it. your business looks freakin awesome btw, i'd love to talk to you about it some time if you had the time.
Ah, the i5BNK. I got my parents an i5BNH (the same nuc, just a taller chassis so it can take a 2.5 inch hard drive or SSD internally) to replace their old core 2 rig from 10+ years ago. That little nuc is fantastic. It's *much* more powerful, while being a tiny fraction of the size of their old desktop, drawing a *lot* less power and a hell of a lot quieter.
The only thing I'd change about it, would be to give it a couple more usb ports.

Thinking back to when I set it up for them, I'd probably change the ram slots so it's a little easier to fit ram in them. It was a f**king nightmare to get that ram in. Easily 50% of the time I spent setting their nuc up was spent struggling to get that ram in there. Maybe it was just the sticks I had that were a little on the large side, but it was seriously tight fit and I had to use a scary amount of force to get them in.

I like these minis. I have a zotac in the garage, and just bought a skull canyon (thing is a beast) that I am setting up as a carpc for the work truck

Awesome little machine. I got the 8i3beh and it just works. I even got global offensive to run low 60+ when messing with lightweight linux distros and DEs (arch with LXDE w/ steam)

Dude so awesome. Glad I stumbled upon this. This pretty much exactly what I've been thinking I wanted for long time, but didn't realize it was available. We already have huge TV's/monitors and home stereos, and wireless everything else. Plus this is small and portable. Great video

With that thunderbolt 3, you can make that nuc into a decent gaming pc by connecting it to an egpu box. I wish Intel made a companion box for this purpose.
riopato2009 it would be messy and pricy, if you want there is a NUC with a discrete video card built in, that’s great for gaming
I have the NUC 8 i3 for one of my employees and it's great. Even though I used a m.2 ssd, I bought the tall chassis because I read it has better cooling. It probably wouldn't matter for my user case but I hate fan noise. Looking forward to switching everyone in the office to fanless computers when they become more mainstream.
I saw a review where it was stated that the SLIM and TALL versions do no differ in terms of noise...
Love me a NUC, got one myself.
Personally I have and use a gemini lake cpu which has a fraction of my full powered desktop.
However it’s more then enough power to COMFORTABLY browse the web and play 4k video.
As a tip to other NUC owners out there to change the power saving options in the BIOS. The default settings are meant more for laptops and increasing battery life.
Don’t need to explain why this doesn’t need to have aggressive power savings enabled...
I have mine (i3 version) set up in the loungeroom connected to the TV. I love the size and that it is essentially quiet. In fact, I am using it now to make this post!

Very soon this type of devices will run Windows on ARM cores built on 7nm with no fans needed for cooling. Intel is facing stiff competition which is great for consumers.
@who8myfish, seriously? Apple has been engineering ARM processors for iPads, etc. for years. Intel's efforts have ended in failure. They now have all their eggs in the pentium architecture basket, and they're being beaten even at that by AMD.
RISC architectures other than ARM that lack the costly licensing burden may eventually jump into the lead. RISC-V may marginalize ARM.
I use a Chromebox for my garage PC. Works great for what I need in the garage and was *_way_* cheaper than a NUC.

I love mini PCs . For my daily beater I'm currently running a Lenovo Thinkcentre M700 Tiny . Specs:
i7-6700T processor
16GB DDR4 memory
500GB M.2 SSD bootdrive + 1TB 2.5 internal spinner for storage
HDMI port + 2x DisplayPort dual monitor capability
OS-Win10 pro
Size - 7in x 7.25in x 1.5in
I like the Intel U processors , just wish that they weren't soldered in . Intel T processors are socketed and only 35W TDP , best of both worlds .

They're good machines, decent power efficiency, small form factor, robust little hardware. But cost is far too high compared to alternatives, in my opinion, overpaying for brand.

I have the same thing [16gig of ram, and a 960 evo]. It runs well. I just use for daily use and youtube.
Great video. I understand that installing m.2 SATA disk you have left youself a space for growth. I believe that you could get more from your NUC if you installed proper m.2 disk. This NUC is prepared to run disk PCIe x4.

welcome, yeh that bracket is legit. as far as dual boot, no just cuz i have no use for it but so many people comment on linux on this video, i was surprised. i just personally love win10, plenty for me, but i know linux is great

I built about the same thing - - - - -with a raspberry pi 3B+ I check out the internet thru a built in browser, visit youtube, check email, run JMRI to control my model trains, built in screen capture to my inhome pc thru a ftp connection for printing , and a headphone jack for either ear phones or speaker. HDMI or vga thru an adapter to the monitor. runs Rasbian on a micro sd card. No hard drive or windows 10 - - -it is a unix machine. But a great little surfer and train controller. Sits on the back of my monitor. Bob
I bought the same NUC to be my Linux box, I consider it my favorite computer because it have enough power and is actually cute ;-)

Beats the raspi pi 3 I use in my workshop nice work as the computer is a valuable tool for the workshop these days if you pop it behind the screen in the middle it won't hit as much dust just vac the vents once a week

For traveling HTPC I use a Samsung Chromebook and an HDMI cable. Walmart, $149. Perfect for Netflix and UA-cam, and your Google Chrome browser (favorites, etc) syncs with any other devices you login to.

I personally think the idea is cool for reading emails and watching videos and a little browsing over and above that there is no point there are alternatives at a much cheaper price

I have a couple of queries, hoping that you might answer them: 1. Is it powerful enough to rip CDs into mp3? (that’s the best case requirement) 2. is it good enough to handle modern media consumption, if connected to a 2k 32” monitor?, and 3. lastly, are these future proof, or meant to last a couple of years? hey lenny , my pleasure. quesiton 1, yes easily, but you just have to hook up an external cd drive obviously!. 2. most definitely, all day. 3. i would expect this machine to last well beyond 7 years and not even begin to be sluggish. good luck! the only other thing i would recommend is get a NVME type m.2 drive, i accidently just bought a regular sata one like an iidiot

the NUC is a good desktop PC for the normal task, I have an older C2D laptop set up like you had before and it is falling apart after 10 years of use plan to make a wood case for it and get a small cooler for it soon.

We love our NUC we put it in our bedroom to use as a media player installed 8gb ram and a 1tb hdd

Where did you get that vesa mount for the Intel NUC?
I have bought 2 already for at work, and they are super fast and quiet, where my colleagues fans kick in after 3 hours working on their macbooks, this one stays quiet all day. I installed Linux Mint on it and some applets to display the CPU temperature in the footer. I also had 16 GB as I run a several browsers with many tabs and PhpStorm (I am a Drupal back-end developer).

techfreshness did you evaluate a Chromebox first before going with the NUC? I'm running Ubuntu on a NUC and like it but I think overall I'd be just as happy with a ChromeBox since no gaming is involved.
perhaps, although i've never used a chromebox though, and the thought of being locked down or using a os made by google doens't appeal to me. i generally find all their software a little difficult to use. except for google.com, that is a gem ha. i'd just rather have a full windows PC, but perhaps i'm just a bit old school?> you might be just as happy with a chromebox though since you sound like you like to use different types of OS's, i just love windows personally.
I just had a thought from your opening sequence that it might be funny to do a skit where you go to your door for your Amazon package and a porch pirate is making off with it. Or it may be a dumb idea and I've just watched way too many UA-cam videos of porch pirates on security cams LOL

This would be awesome in the McMurdo station in Antarctica because of its small size and portability! 200 terabytes of memory would be enough for a good size movie library and music library and maybe a vintage video games library too.

Steven Penny you can get windows downloads off of Microsoft website. It will be the latest instance and minimal updates. When you download you can chose to download boot install to USB. Sorry edited post due to incorrect link.
Is the Thunderbolt port good for eGPUs?

It could install and run any software a big PC could install and run. But it's got wimpy spec ... 15W CPU running iGPU. So it can "handle" lightweight stuff but you can forget any kind of "realtime" preview/production and you won't get much digital image/video editing done. A real system which costs more than 300 bucks, which has beefy CPU, and which has dedicated GPU hardware is a basic requirement, it's not a convenience or a luxury for that kind of workload. The NUC can do HDMI playback but it can't realistically do any heavy pixel lifting.

It's very nice and you did a great job but I think it is kind of pricey for a barebone. I mean a lot of people try to get one under 250 and I'm not talking about the barebone computer.

Do you think it is powerfull enough to edit 4K videos? I use Filmora Wondershare on my old Acer Revo One RL 85 PC which I'm looking to update soon to a newer pc. It has Intel i3 processor and 8gb ram and runs Filmora very slowly. I would still like a small pc that I could edit with to put behind the TV like you have there.
hey michael, i think it would struggle a bit for 4k editing tbh. i have never used filmora, but this pc would be a huge step up from what you use. you could try the i7 version with haydes canyon (which has more powerful integrated graphics) make sure you get an m.2 NVME hard drive, and at least 16gb ram, i think you'd be OK, but not as good as a dedicated desktop

I want one of these for my media center, but what scares me is that there is no audio out jack. I'm currently using an old computer and I have the audio out jack running directly to my soundbar. I use Spotify on my computer and I open up movies I've downloaded with VLC Player. I guess the sound is coming out of the HDMI cable?

Pretty nifty project, for what it's worth it's a good price. The only pricey thing is having to buy your own ram. For the simplicity and cost I think it's worth it. Obviously won't play high end games but it's small and can take on daily tasks.

Is the garage enclosed? I heard putting electronics in the garage, if it isn't enclosed, can be bad because of humidity and temperature changes.
Hi Whilst handling the SSD & DDR4’s were you grounded? I’ve always been ultra careful with chips, so are they more robust these days?
i've been building computers since ole 386 days, i've never had an issue with shocking any of my components, although i am cognizant of it in winter if i have socks on or something, i'll at least try to touch something metal first ha, but i dont' use like a mat or wristband or anything of that sort, but its not a bad idea
parts way more esd or "stupid" safe, example i licked a ddr3 stick of ram (dont recommend), wiped it with my shirt and installed it on a z97 msi krait edition mobo with a 4690k and still overclocked to 4.7 ghz and the ram was overclocked to 1866mhz from 1600mhz. I started pc building about 3-4 years ago and did some extreme experiments in the beginning because i had extra resources
Yes, I too understand that you must be earthed when handling electronics. Touching the frame periodically helps but isn’t foolproof and I would think the manufacturers wouldn’t recognise this method as being satisfactory. I did a tradesman (gasfitting appliances) and they stated there were billions of dollars worth of electronics dumped each year from early life failure... the main cause - static discharge. The failure may occur 12months later than the handling. After doing the session I asked the tutors if we needed to earth ourselves when servicing appliances: the N.Z. Rinnai Rep rand Australia who rang Japan and the answer came back as yes, you must be earthed when working on their appliances.
Jevandtieriel John Hi John, if you touch the frame or case it’ll work if you have an earth connected to it. You could make a lead with just one wire on a plug and plug it into your power socket & computer. I’d be very wary though!

NUC, often pronounced "Nuhk" That's a pretty nice, minimal setup overall. I like the Apple trackpad as well, that's one thing Apple does really well.

I've considered mini pc's before, but they never add up for me...A $250 laptop (or less) Gets me a PC,a keyboard,a screen and a built in UPS,and a camera! Plus it's much more portable
A retarded keyboard, a low-resolution screen with a low refresh rate and narrow viewing angles, a shitty UPS that doesn't last an hour, and a 720p camera at best. Not to mention the trackpads are usually shit. On top of that it runs Windows.

@@LoganDark4357 - All of the peripherals you listed are things that would be added to the NUC. If you had any compression skills at all you'd realize the O.P. was talking about using a laptop as the "brains" of the system.
What you would have with a good used laptop would be:
1). More USB ports. At LEAST four on most laptops
2). NO RAM to purchase, however you might even have increased RAM capability if needed for gaming, editing, etc.
3). You would also have no hard drive to buy. In addition, you would also have an increased hard drive capability. Possibly a second internal bay, or @ least more USB ports for external multi-terabyte drives to hold your 4K media.
4). Finding a used laptop with an Intel I5 or I7 processor would blow this NUC away at processing speeds. NO comparison.
5). A factory preinstalled Windows OS with license key at no extra charge. Always a bonus.
Keep it closed or remove the display... Mount it to the wall or to the underside of a desk where fan noise would nearly inaudible and you would have a REAL system without making compromises. ... All for a few hundred dollars. Even LESS if you search for a laptop with a broken display.
BTW... a "Low res/low refresh rate screen"?...What do you think the refresh rate is on the $200.00 30" monitor this guy bought? does it make a difference with the NUC's graphics capabilities anyway? As far as running "Windows", you saw it installed on the NUC just as it would be on a laptop. Of course, you could opt for any freeware O.S. you want if that's your thing. In the end you save hundreds of dollars for a far better system. Soooo....What's your point?

RPi 3 $35 (includes wifi&bluetooth) add a 1TB usb $50 and move to a Linux OS and open source apps ($0) and escape the MS $ black hole --- for the uses you mentioned at about 1/8 the cost -- sounds like a no brainer .... but ????

a pi 3b has a gig of ram. It already suffers on rasbian w/ LXDE, i cant imagine doing anything else than setting up a retropie box. But that's my personal experience.

The tiny form factor is amazing, but it's hard to imagine paying as much for that as what I just paid for my most recent gaming rig.

it comes with its own tiny power brick plug, i think i show it in the video, its not so much a power 'brick' though, just a fatter kind of rectangle plug at the end

Yes. Via HDMI and Thunderbolt 3
You can get a usbc to hdmi dongle and connect a second display
Or you can cascade 2 display port monitor via usb C for a total of 3 monitors.
Yes I had 2x 24" monitors, but then I upgraded to 'just' a 43" 4K monitor at my second job. That is even better.

If it serves your purpose than that's all that matters but it doesn't seem like a great value to me. Years ago, I put together a Dell Mini Hackintosh to use as a jukebox / web surfer and it only cost me $300. Still does the job.
