      ReactOS is *very* lightweight, so there is nothing to optimize for gaming. Only to fix known latency bugs in the current sound system code.

      Isn't it funny how MS "developed" Windows into a bloated & unintuitive OS that takes up unlimited RAM & hardware resources !! 😩

      Windows 95 mainly used the old Windows 16-colour palette for its default colour scheme (grey for windows, teal backdrop), and the title bars were flat. 98 brought in the horizontal gradient on the title bars, and the softer colours are much closer to Me/2000.

    I love ReactOS -- they have been through hell from the project's inception, to MS lawsuits, etc, etc. If more people would contribute, it would become an epic hybrid to support Linux/MS products.

    •  5 років тому +10

      ReactOS is nice. Worth a spin. But MS lawsuits? Where have you been? This is nothing! Some years ago, a galactic sized lawsuit had SCO trying to sue IBM because SCO bought Unix from Novell, but not the proprietary name (or something similar). SCO charged IBM with putting code into their version of Unix (AIX) without permission from SCO. Even Linux got somehow involved. If SCO won, it would have meant everyone using Linux would have to pay a $2,500.00 to $5,000.00 license to use Linux. Many people said that Microsoft was funding SCO so anyone using Linux would either pay the license fee to SCO, or take it off & go back to Windows. I believe the lawsuit is finally over. But both SCO & Microsoft are lower than whale shit at the bottom of the ocean. Thanks for taking your time out reading this. And yes, everything is true. Just Google SCO vs IBM lawsuit and everything will be explained best.

    I wish they could get it to Beta... it's been in Alpha or pre-alpha for how long? A decade maybe? I do understand that recreating Windows from scratch is a huge undertaking and I don't believe the team is very large.
    Windows won't be Windows by the time ReactOS is complete. ReactOS will likely find a niche running legacy software.

    • @yereverluvinuncleber
      @yereverluvinuncleber 7 років тому +42

      No, that's not true. They have one target Windows 2003 server, that hasn't changed since 2003. They will persist and target 2003 and when it is done, look at later functionality. That said, they can implement things that MS deliberately did not implement, eg. they can give it NT6 shims to allow NT6 apps to run.

    • @AnimalFacts
      @AnimalFacts 7 років тому +61

      With Microsoft moving Windows away from legacy support, ReactOS may find itself in a good niche for those still needing to run Win32 software.

    • @biehdc
      @biehdc 7 років тому +16

      yes they still target windows server 2003, but it will have a "forward compatibility mode" which means it can pretend to be a newer system. some applications dont require newer functionality, they only think they do. remember the dx10 hack for windows xp where you just played being a windows vista.

    Something like this is desperately needed. Not just because Windows 10 sucks, but because MS appears to be going in the direction where users will be forced to "rent" the operating system in perpetuity, not just a one time license. For me it's stick with windows 7 or Linux. Or both.

  • @michaelstoliker971
    @michaelstoliker971 7 років тому +51

    I wish them success! Windows 10 and whatever comes after it is not in my future because it works for Microsoft and not for me. I want an operating system that exists to allow me to run software that I want on a computer, not software that mines my information for the benefit of corporate panderers. Sadly, most of the software I want to run, runs on windows Also, sadly, that software is purchase once software which is going the way of the Dodo. Subscription software is the future as far as software vendors are concerned.
    I want my freedom of choice back. I want the freedom to not upgrade. The freedom to not be charged over and over again for something I've already paid for. The freedom from having my hardware turned into their hardware used to mine my information and push advertising down my throat.

    • @gandsnut

      I couldn't agree more. The couple of Win installations I run are either older & virtualized, or severely "clamped-down" as to information mining - using (only one example) SpyBot Beacon. Google & Amazon appear to be heavily involved in their own spying, with those oh-so-kewl talk-to gizmo boxes that use the 'cloud'. I'd argue THEY are far more intrusive than Windows 10.

I bought a cheap android tablet to explore other options and did not like having apps that always phone home to spam you with ads or offer paid versions without ads that I wouldn't buy anyway because they don't have the features I want. Printing? Forget it! Unless you want some kind of cloud system that has to route your output through the internet. What do you do when the internet is down? I now have a wireless router that has to be configured through the internet? How is this more secure? I might as well post all my info on a moving billboard in the worst part of town! Nope Nope Nope. Time for me to opt out of the future. I used to laugh at people that couldn't get used to computers, but I guess I've joined the luddites.

    • @michaelstoliker971
      @michaelstoliker971 7 років тому +5

      I've looked at Linux a few times over the years, but I guess I'm waiting for it to become an OS that you can install and forget. And also one that has the software I want. Windows may suck, but it has all the software I wanted to run (note the past tense).
      With Linux I'm concerned that I might have to learn what all the stupidly named software packages actually do. I don't want to tell people I'm using Yakk, or Gimp, or fnord or whatever Linux users think is a clever name for a software package. Less nerdy, more Word-y (how about Spreadsheet 2.0?), Windows isn't immune to stupid names for software but at least they're doing it for the marketing, not the weird factor.

    • @derekp2674
      @derekp2674 7 років тому

      Realistically, Linux is never going to be a like-for-like replacement for any given Windows version. Even other Windows versions cannot achieve that - even though Microsoft has access to all the source code.
      I get that there are killer apps (including for me Excel and PowerPoint) only available on Windows and Linux, but when I don't need to use those I'm more than happy to default to Linux.

    • @impermanenthuman8427
      @impermanenthuman8427 7 років тому +1

      ArchGirl As someone new to Linux myself, the problem with Linux gaining a larger user base so far is that there are so many distros it takes quite a lot of research to decide which one to start with, and then I choose a distro which looked great in a UA-cam review but then it’s buggy because the developer/s didn’t have the time or funds to thoroughly test it, or things aren’t working and maybe it’s my hardware since most pc’s hardware is optimized for windows, or maybe I finally figure out that the distro doesn’t automatically download the drivers I need but it never occurred to me because windows does all that updating automatically, and I don’t know anyone who can help me because hardly anyone uses Linux haha etc etc and it all ends up being too much work and puts people off, when in reality the new user needs a good easy first experience and there are only a very few distros that are highly likely going to be a good first experience for most users on windows optimized systems and that seems to be Mint Mate LTS and Ubuntu Mate LTS so I think every Linux video and user should always put a caveat in any other distro review to suggest noobs like me to start with one of those two first, THEN experiment from there, Ubuntu Mate LTS has a welcome center clearly indicating what driver downloads to get and what forums to go to for help etc, and the Mate Tweak option switches between most of the desktop configurations of all the other distros so you can try which layout you like, just awesome 😎
      Props for being an arch user btw that’s cool

    • @archgirl
      @archgirl 7 років тому +1

      ImpermanentHuman Hah, thanks, but it's really not as hard as people make it out to be. :p Just follow the Holy Bib- Uh, I mean, the Wiki... And you're pretty much good to go as far as installing goes. After that, maintenance and safe, sensible usage is something you pick up. Little things go wrong? You PROBABLY learned something that will help you fix it just the other day when you broke something else to get something ELSE working right. xD You'd think with all the tedium I'd be sick of it after four years and just about ready to settle down with a nice premade distro, but nope! xD
      And yeah, the choice can certainly be overwhelming for a new user. Hell, it's sometimes overwhelming for me and I've found my forever distro! I'm always trying to decide on some fringe distro to boot up in Virtualbox to screw around with. :p
      I feel like distrowatch should have a big disclaimer on the homepage. "Never tried Linux EVER!? TRY THIS FIRST! You don't have to, but it's highly recommended." xD

    I have to say I followed this from the beginning. Very impressive and I do remember when the team were forced into a massive code audit. This put the project behind, but where its got to now is superb. As Chris clearly demonstrates, it's got to the point where more 'complex' apps are installing natively and running without any major glitches. Adobe is such an example. I reckon CS2 might be alright as well. I know that lot in Redmond are worried about it. For anyone who doesn't know, this is NOT linux, this is a pure hand built Win32 alternative. Opensource NT clone, at the minute it's tech is based similar to XP with some 7 bits along the way. I think they sit behind to not cause any legal issues. Might be wrong, but really massive well done.

    Last time I played with ReactOS about 5 years ago USB was not even working maybe in another 30 years we will get a fully 64bit Windows 7 comparable OS LOL! Edit: seriously though I hope they get it working sooner than later, but with the team being so very small I can understand why it's taken them this long. They should just shoot for a Windows XP/98SE era level of OS at this point so people could use it to build retro gaming PC systems without a lot of hassle.

    • @dooleyjlt5503

      They ought to shoot for a currently supported version of Windows and once complete and fully functional shelve it and as soon as that version becomes unsupported they can release it and be wanted by the public and have plenty of time to work on it. Like how long before win10 becomes unsupported? I guess a version without all the spying and calling home or cloning your hard drive and going through it at Microsoft would be highly appreciated.

    As a CISSP and CEH I have to say that the "Windows 7 will still work after 2020, but not safely online" is a very much debatable statement. I have seen Win XP machines that are still safely online, as long as they have the proper firewalling fronting them online, and they're not using defaults for everything, like Internet Explorer. You can safely run Windows 7 online for ages to come, just know what you're doing, and avoid default OS software, like IE or terminal/remote segments of it. Become informed about it, that's all you need to do.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  6 років тому +20

      Well, maybe. I take your point. But to run an OS that is not manufacturer patched -- and which they hence consider and advertise to be unsafe -- is very risky. For personal use, maybe, at your own risk. But if you ended up in a court case relating to data breach, loss or misuse you would not stand a chance. I know of many companies where the act of connecting a Windows XP computer to the network is a disciplinary offence.

      You may have heard about how Microsoft extended the "supported" period of Windows XP past the point where Vista was supported. To a company even if there was no difference between Windows XP and 7, if XP is no longer supported it's the "reason" something happened.
      We live in a world where "blame" is always part of the equation. People _have_ to blame something, something specific happened and who ever was in charge of what happened is responsible for the problem.
      If there's a Data breach, even if it wasn't the fact that you were running XP, if they find out you were using an outmoded OS they'd blame it on that, blame whoever green lit the use of XP, shoulder them with the concequences and everybody will move on. It's called covering your ass, it doesn't matter if security wise using 7 over 10 is equal. If a bank decides to use 7 after it's no longer supported by Microsoft, they can easily be sued for still using it if you have an account with them.

    I wouldn't call it an alternative for Windows 7 as development is progressing extremely slowly, plus as the watermark on the bottom right corner says: It's reporting Windows NT 5.2 to applications, aka Windows XP. More and more applications are dropping support for Windows XP and so consequently ReactOS as well. Even newer Firefox versions won't support it. So unless they will move on to emulating/reporting newer Windows versions, this would merely be an alternative to XP. Plus there's other issues like driver incompatibility and whole subsystems still waiting to be fixed or reverse-engineered and a few more. As it stands right now it's a neat peculiarity, but I wouldn't say it will rise up to threaten the popularity of legacy Windows versions anytime soon. Unless the development team manages to gain some traction, that is.

      guyonearth I didn't say it will happen anytime soon. Plus the question is how Microsoft would react to a viable ReactOS... Afaik they really do reverse-engineer quite a few bits and most commercial software licenses go against that, so there's that.

    • @guyonearth
      @guyonearth 7 років тому +1

      +AwesomeSource Films If the project has source code that can be audited, and it can be sown that the project contains no source code from Microsoft, which I think has already been shown, then if they produced a working operating system, Microsoft could do nothing about it. The question would be if they can in fact produce a working, binary-compatible modern operating system that offers essentially the same functionality as an earlier version of Windows without violating any Microsoft patents. I myself do not think that is likely, given the current nature of this project. It would have to re-implement thousands of software functions from scratch, many of which are not fully documented publicly. I do not believe the ReactOS project has that kind of talent available. And then of course, one would have to ask whether a "working" re-implementation of Windows 2000, for example, would actually bother Microsoft that much or not. I don't think it would. Boxed operating systems are not a large part of Microsoft revenue these days, and something that old would not siphon off business. Besides, I have seen no evidence that ReactOS is intended to be something that would be sold for money. If it's free, why would they care? They gave away Windows 10 for free themselves. It still is free, if you have a valid serial from 7 or 8, as a matter of fact I just did an install a few days ago, didn't cost me anything. I think the reality is that at present this project is so rudimentary and so far behind the capabilities of the actual product, they see no threat whatsoever. Anybody could buy an old copy of Windows 2000 off eBay and have something much more useful than this OS is, and far more compatible.

    • @ask4kobebeef

      If you think Linux is too geeky you clearly havent tried it for some time or are running off perceptions.
      As an example. Linux Mint is very Windows in its look and feel, easier to install, and you have control of what happens with updates. My non tech wife uses it happily on a travel laptop and really only noticed that the home screen was a different colour. She thought it was just a theme.
      I put a copy of Vector Linux (a light weight Linux) on a tiny Acer notebook the other day. Took about 20 minutes, simple to use and once again any consumer Windows user could happily us it to get to their browser.
      Personally I think the 80/20 probably applies. Most people could actually do their real work activities on Linux and its apps with a tiny bit of effort. They other 20%ish have real compatability issues that mean they are effectively tied to Windows.
      Many people dont want to learn another thing. Either they dont have the time, are lazy or just have computer fatigue (usually after what Windows has been dragging them through)

      Yes, it has some sort of Wine in the background - but sometimes you will have to fix things and most very specific softwares will not work, like HWiNFO32 for hardware monitoring, or any Windows defragmentation software and drivers for special shitWindows hardware.

    Windows 7 will still be safe to use online after 2020 if you have Avast or other antivirus software installed. My system is dual-boot with Windows XP and Windows 7, both have Avast installed. I have no safety issues or concerns using XP online. The same will be true of 7.

      why do you keep XP? Genuine question, I put XP on an old low-end PC I had and nothing worked on it so after trying a few alternatives, I eventually put Win 10 on it instead, it runs slowly but it runs and stuff generally works.

      @@Smartzenegger hahaha I've seen that vid. Yeah man I've been using Linux for the past 7 years or so, yet during that entire time my main daily driver has been windows. I only use Linux on laptops and in virtual machines, but my desktop is windows 10. Would love to see react get similar love as Linux has gotten. Lots of forks and custom distros with plenty of devs would be good for this project.

    • @elijahhmarshall
      @elijahhmarshall 4 роки тому +1

      @@Smartzenegger Yes, exactly, most parts of the project are GNU GPL license (exactly like Linux) while some parts are under a BSD/MIT style of license. In both cases anyone is free to use the code to their liking. Commercial or non commercial. Just any code that is GPL cannot be re licensed, but anything under the BSD/MIT style can be re licensed, and even made proprietary code.
