This week I checked out the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Apple announed a new 12 - 27% tax on the app store in its fight against Epic and drone deliveries might be becoming a thing after all, thanks to Google Wing, DJI and Walmart.

Correction: at 4:00 I just realized we used the wrong phones, which makes this confusing. What I meant to say is that the Ultra got more expensive (50 EUR / 100 USD) and the regular & plus models got cheaper in Europe (-50 EUR) or stayed the same in the US, so in both cases there's an extra 100 EUR/USD between the Ultra and the other two models compared to last year.

7:11 I think this m-f lacks the knowledge about AppStore that it isn't a payment process. That's why I'm here to educate this brainless kids. Epic Games charge 10-3-% royalties, Sony takes 30%, Xbox takes 30%, Steam, GOG everybody does it kid. Learn before you bark like a puppy. LOL
That S24 has horrible square corners; perfect for tearing pockets and wallets. Rounded corners are much better, and easier in the hands. What are Samsung playing at?
I've said it everywhere and everytime and I won't get tired of saying it again. I don't care how good Apple's products are, the way they do business is greedy, horrible, disrespectful and simply non consumer friendly.
well said 👏🏻
Like every company then
The funny thing about Apple though is if you go to discussion forums like Appleinsider and Macrumors the very same customers they are milking will defend them.
Apple doesn't see a human they see money
And their products are getting worse with said business practice. Their latest products are soldered pieces of shit. They work but only as long as their essentials are not broken and can only be repaired by specialists. Like SSDs? You should be able to change that. Don't suck up their shiny white aluminium fairy dust.
How developers aren't boycotting apple is beyond me.
Personally I think it's time that developers just make their iOS apps worse or have less features. Maybe then Apple will have to cut back on their evil tactics
They cannot boycott Apple. Do you know the % of market share they have worldwide, speciallyin big rich economies like the US? That would be a dumb move in my opinion.
It seems the boycott has actually started though, netflix, youtube and spotify have refused to support the new Apple Vision Pro headset (even if technically all iOS apps can run on VisionOS, it looks like they have made the explicit choice to disallow usage of their apps on VisionOS, pointing users to web versions on safari).
It really can't be just a coincidence that the news came out a few days after the introduction of this new 27% tax...
Because it's monopoly so they have no choice. This is what antitrust legislation is supposed to prevent.
@@antoniocampos1151 Yes they can if enough companies band together. It can cause a major shift in customers not everyone is part of the Apple cult. Apple controls 58% the US market however they are not as dominate as they once were. They are fighting to keep the market share the same, or grow by doing things that Steve Jobs would never do. Like recently they are giving people older less desirable iPhones to lifeline customers (the free government phones). I have a veteran friend that revived a 2022 entry level iPhone for free via the VA last year, and even older iPhones are being given away at regular lifeline locations (they're even advertising in Marketplace). So basically Apple is desperate to keep market shares up even if they have to dump it into the free market. Globally they only have around 31% share with only less than a dozen countries having 50% to 60% market share the majority have less than 30%. The two largest shares is Japan at 68%, and shockingly North Korea with 82%. India (less than 20%) and China (less than 30%) made up 34% of the world's population (America is 4%).

the new 27% tax is by far the funniest thing ever, how are they ever planning on enforcing that in the first place?! they can't just demand that third parties just give them insights into how many people pay on the app developers website
They can, when you publish an app to the app store you have to give them your source code, which they review. I also assume that this full page thing will actually be an api from swiftui that they can monitor. In terms of capabilities, they absolutely can monitor it.
Pretty sure they will remove apps that do not comply. Their greed is legendary and they do have great lawyers. It is hard to fight them without governments forcing them to behave, like EU does.
@@AlexandreMoreauLemay but the payment happens on an external website, I understand they check the apps code but they cannot check the platforms website

Good, Apple giving me more reasons to never buy an iPhone
And more ammo for when people say Apple is better.
@@codymcarthur1932 apple is better. i swapped to a galaxy S9 to try out android and it was crap compared to an iphone
I dont see the apple tax lasting for long under the eu digital markets act when it is gonna come into effect apple will be forced to allow third party apps and sideloads so basically you can do what you could already do in Android where you can install any app from an apk file or install third party stores and apple would soon have an equivalent to all these. This is one of the main things holding me back from buying an iphone(as a lot of apps I use are modded) also I would appreciate custom ROMs dont see that coming for apple tho
I don't think apple would support some apk like file system. Instead we will just have a few apps from a different store.
@@shlokshah5379 wdym by a few apps from a different store
How many people are using the sideload feature of android? We are a minority. Outside our vocal minority, none cares. But I hope apple is forced to do the same thing everywhere.
@@ILNSuryaChandraAll Huawei users are sideloading. It is still a minority, but a large minority.
@@Sitwayen yes they are sideloading. But either they already belong to the minority or they are forced to learn. Either way, it’s a small percentage. Like around 3% of the entire smartphone users. If given the chance, they aren’t going to keep side loading but just use the default store and payment services.
And people still claim Apple is not monopolistic.
I like some of the apple products, but I would never buy anything from apple as long as the company policy is based exclusively on relentless corporate greed.
Then you will never buy an Apple product. Good for you.
Man, Epic is really out there fighting our battle. While I am not a massive fan of the company, this is a massive pr win in my eyes (them continually pushing apple).
Epic also needs to be pushed
@@alecshoemaker5908one step at a time 😂
@@alecshoemaker5908 their store is operating at a loss with their 12% cut
Not a big win for them, their Epic store still burning money not making renevue.. so what is the big win for them here? They are already spending tons of money for years without profit, us that a win in your eye? And not to mention they are banned from both (Apple and Google) ARM based store, in an era when EVERYONE try to release their own made ARM chip to compete the already 3 years old M1, so where they will selling their x86 games if Intel/Nvidia also release their own made ARM chip, the x86 market will be lower and lower in every year, but they can't use any ARM base store (except some new ARM store, but for new stores the Epic store is the best example... they need tons of time and tons of money to start to operate well)
I understand your dilema
And this is why have an android phone. Thanks Apple!
You should have mentioned that Apple doesn't allow developers to offer digital items more cheaply on their web too, which is insane.
I'm pretty sure you can buy Twitter Blue cheaper on the web compared to iOS/Android though, no?
@@x1nto Try it and let me know. iOS only.
@@tomasm1233 It's $8/month on web and $11/month on both iOS and Android
@@tomasm1233 I've been fighting with the comments filter for the past few days trying to comment my findings. I don't even know if people can see my previous comments or not 🙂. Basically, I've found the web version to offer premium for a bit cheaper compared to Android and iOS. Either it's allowed for companies to offer goods cheaper on the web or Apple is making an exception for Twitter. I hope it's the first one.
Can we all just... STOP using some products and services? I mean, its high time that we r supporting their greed 😶

The lack of Qi2 charging was a big miss from samsung.
Probably it's better for the battery not to charge in a super crazy fast way, like the chinese brands. This way may last 5-6 year before dying completely.

There was an interesting display tech at CES called QDEL. Directly emissive quantum dots (without a backlight or LCD layer). Could end up being the "final" display tech instead of microLED as it's supposedly a lot cheaper to manufacture.
From what I heard, they could almost use the tech used for LCDs for QDEL. That will save jobs and factories where it would have to rebuild to fit the current tech.

I'm confused why Apple has not implemented the same commission on purchases through the browser. I go to retail site X and buy a TV and either pick it up locally or ship it. Apple in entitled to get 27% of the purchase. They are missing a large revenue path.

Apple is begging the EU and FTC to teardown the walls around their garden.
I wonder if we will start seeing game devs/distributors having an exodus from Apple and becoming every other platform, but Appstore friendly. This will also hurt those AR goggles they're releasing in the future in terms of having a game library for it.
If all the Apple app developers come together and strike, Apple will definitely change their mind about charging the commission. Are they too loyal to Apple to the point they are unable to do anything about it?
Drone delivery sounds awful tbh, constant buzzing from drones flying all over the place, they're bound to malfunction from time to time, and as a bonus you get loads of flying cameras overhead at any given point
@@GH0STST4RSCR34M That was my concern as well when it was announced ages ago. Same with how easy it would be to tamper with or shoot down the drown, or to just simply steal the package. It's a cool "futuristic" concept on delivery, but at the same time just giving it to a dude on a bike would still be a lot better
It also sounds.. dystopian
Drone delivery is meant for maginal places or isolated places, where sending a single truck with a package is not possible or not worth it.
Anything not to pay employees.
Why do you worry about the constant buzzing of flying drones when they are meant to replace the constant roaring of delivery van engines?

All this Apple nonsense is exactly why I preordered a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. I’ve used iPhone since the very first in 2007, but Apple is downright anti-consumer even with their own customers. Apple’s authoritarian BS reminds me of how badly Microsoft mismanaged Windows Mobile into an early and very expensive grave.
Yep, they are scammers. I sold all of my Apple devices, and I gifted my iPhone 14 Pro to the Comcast cable tech. Their schemes are maded by pure evils. Check stuff like: how a single grain of sand could destroy your macbook, trick with sodered SSD, and low amount RAM, how your Airpods Pro/Max became a piece of junk after a software update because Apple scammed another company in the past. Right now, we're waiting for the Apple Watch scam saga.
Since you pre-ordered, did they give you the deal of double storage?
Good to see that not all Apple fans are sheep with their heads in the sand.
How do you know you’re stupid? Simple, Samsung has a commission of 30% in the Galaxy Store. 💀
@dominic7012 ...which doesn't matter cuz basically no one is using it. Galaxy Store isn't the only way to make in-app purchases. Sideloading exists and is easy on Android while other different app stores are available as well. The problem's never having a commission, but whether there're alternative ways to avoid the commission. The one who's stupid is clearly not OP.

If Samsung is getting all the licences and permits to do ECG in every major market on their smart ring, then I feel it's going to be heavily pushed in marketing. I remember Huawei opted to disable ECG in their smart watches for most of Europe because it's a big hassle.
Also, I live in Finland and I had never heard of Google Wing despite being generally interested in drones. Probably not a very big project.
ECG with only one point of contact is not great. The ring wont be worth whatever it costs.
Standard DJI drones are already used as delivery in Ukraine with great precision, the Russian customers of this service don't complain.

Malicious compliance is hilarious.
What happened to this week's Friday checkout?
One thing I don't understand about delivery drones is, does the techbros at SV not know what a lighter-than-air machine is? Why this laser-like focus in a less efficient technology?
Sure, LtA are more susceptible to things like wind, but it's still more energy efficient to counter the wind with propulsion than to use propulsion to keep the machine flying.
How much greedy can apple get? They really need a huge fine for their monopoly behavior.

Drone delivery will never fully take over the world. I lived close to an airport and no drones are allowed in a radius of like 20KM. Which includes the city and some surrounding towns as well.
Every place I've lived at was no more than a 40 minute drive from a public airport or 20 minutes from a private one/flight school. There is no way they could deliver to my current place where the nearest one is just a short bike ride away.
I don't think anyone is claiming a 100% replacement. It's more of a new service that's gonna work well for certain products and in certain locations
The only case of successful drone delivery I've ever seen is in Rwanda, where the drones are being used for air dropping small medical supplies such as vaccines to remote villages. It does make there because the drone can shorten delivery time for critical medicine that is time sensitive to remote areas that normally can take days to reach by car. But for other use case, especially in an urban area where the distance is much shorter, the usual method of delivery is still more efficient compared to using a drone.

There was a miniseries called "Wild Palms" back in the 1990s. It featured eyeglass form-factor total immersion VR. More interestingly, it also featured a drug that would allow the human brain to trick itself into experiencing the sensation of touch while interacting with the virtual world. This is the kind of VR I'm waiting for. Once big pharma really gets serious about tweaking the compounds contained in so-called "magic mushrooms," and the hardware shrinks down to a size that doesnt look totally ridiculous, we should truly see the beginning of the VR revolution.

The whole app runs on Apple environment utilising both Apple’s hardware and software. And developers developes and maintain the app and thus taking the major portion, the rest all is utilising the Apple both hardware and software. Government also charges 30% tax to the individual earning that falls under that tax categories. Government taxes because you are using their infrastructure and services and for your well-being and growth. Similarly you are using here Apple infrastructure (both hardware and software) as well services. So this 30% tax is in behalf of providing better services and infrastructure. Why don't you ask and take the Government to court and ask "I don't want to pay the services charges". Simply because even after you are saying that you are denying services, you still be using it on practical scale. And if you don't pay the tax of your part, it will be simply violating income tax rule. So, the 30% tax by Apple or Government is on that behalf. Accept it.
Netflix doesnt even have an app for Nintendo Switch. The app on Samsung TV wont let you log out and requires resetting the whole tv (its what I had to do to logout some other guest)

While you can look at Apple decision that way, that it’s making it hard for consumers to buy things outside of their store, i’m pretty sure the other way around is understanding that Apple knows they’re still getting shit on for bad payment implementations, this is a way to avoid getting sued for bad refunds and processing stuffs, since they can use the “we were forced to actually remove all signs that app users were making purchases through external channels, and thus have no responsibility” card.
It's a link to an external website. No different when someone uses their web browser to sign up or pay for something.

I wonder why Samsung doesn't create less-prem brand and then let them do the budget-to-midrange phones and then they can get on with trying to outcompete Apple?
That way they both have prem phone brand and can cover all other markets
Samsung does have low and midrange phone. You have low range options like the A03, A15, and A23, to the midrange A54, and the upper-mid range S23 FE
It's because samsung is already making midrangers and low end phones and selling them for expensive prices.
If samsung creates a subbrand with less expensive prices they would have to use ultra low end specs and people who do actual specs comparison would just make fun of them.

@@bltzcstrnx we've (my fam) been using budgets phones for years. I also downgraded from flagship to midranger phones recently. So far i have not experienced major issues with the phones we got. As for updates i dont expect these phones to run the latest os anyway so 2-3 major updates for budget phones is what i actually prefer. Any more than that is forcing a budget hardware to run software that it was not designed to handle. Security patches comes longer anyway and that's good enough.
@@mrskye08 budget is fine, what I'm talking about is the high-spec budget. The ones with high-end SoC while costing half of true high-end phones.
