What I hate about Google. Instead updating existing products with new features, they rather create a separate product which they'll eventually close because of lack of use. They don't notice that most people prefer updates over a new product. There's nothing stopping them from Gemini just being an update to Google Assistance.
If they are shutting down a service, it is probably because it was a failed product. Nerds loved Google Hangouts, Duo, and Google podcasts, and Google Play Music, but they were all money losers & failed products, and their replacements are more profitable and more successful. Google Meet, which replaced all the google video conferencing and call apps is more successful than its predecessor and youtube music is more successful than google play music. There is a method to google's madness.
It's expensive to maintain an old/aging product, Google spreads itself thin and can't support all of its projects it tries to throw at the wall. Consumers are attracted to shiny new things, so announcing something rather than announcing updates for an existing product generates hype and interest until the next thing. That's why when they announced 7 years of OS updates on ONLY the new Pixel 8 lineup and future phones, I figured they're going to probably pull the plug in like four years.

A great example of that. (Sorry if it was already brought up) is the 2015 Nvidia Shield pro. Still getting updates and running like a charm.💪🏾

I assume it was a win win for the owners. Either make big buck on acquisition or get the insane reimbursement. Not as good for the consumer of course, but if the reimbursement was one billion, its hard to imagine how much the actual trade price would have been.
I'm actually sad they didn't buy them. I like chaos. And it's just some stupid design software, not like it's something important.

The Google Play Store settlement story is interesting to me considering Google JUST signed exclusivity deals with General Motors to drop CarPlay from their vehicles and lock consumers into a subscription model to keep their infotainment systems working after a period of years.

I guess that the problem with all app stores is that these require deeper system integration. It might lead to preinstalling some questionable app stores on some less popular brands. Users should be able to choose which app stores they want to install at the first configuration of the phone, and appstores that were not choosen should not be active in any way on the phone. I am not sure if that is enforcable though. And I kinda can't belive that I am saying that because I am proponent for user freedom to have appstores they want, and google should not be the company that arbitrarily prohibits other appstores, but I don't know if I trust other companies enough.
I think that at the end I think that these changes are good but I think that there should be probably also some limitations for companies that would allow users to choose the appstore they want.
If we can chnage our default launchers and scteen blockers in Android, changing default app stores should not be such a radical change.
Everyone has their own app store already, and their phones come with them preinstalled.
If you don't trust Epic, Samsung or Xiaomi enough to use their app store, that's great. You are not being forced to use them.
This will simply allow other users to use those app stores without their current limitations imposed by Google.
@@lesath7883 If I am not wrong it worked before in a way that if you (as a company that makes phones) want google services (including play store) on your phone, then you agree that you won't install another appstores unless google agrees for that.
What do you mean that everybody have their own appstore preinstalled? This is not the case. (Or maybe you are talking about the fact that this probably will be the case?)
What I meant is that looking at for example Huawei, appstore usually come with their services (I know that there is required at least some service or something like that, to allow appstore to install/update apps in the background (and probably automatically uninstall app if it is suddenly detected as a malware by appstore)). You can look at f-droid and find out that if you want it to update apps in background then you need to have higher permissions to install required dependency (if I remember correctly it is installed via twrp).
I feel like it is more power in hands of manufacturers. If you want to compleatly disable google play store it is not as simple at disabling play store app. You have also a lot of other google apps (such as google play services) that you probably want to disable and that is why I said in my first comment that I would want to have toggle that fully disables certain appstore (with all of the dependencies and associations)
Maybe I am wrong though and it is not more than manufacturers already can do with launchers and modifications to android itself nowadays.
(of course I am talking only about phones with official google services - manufacturers probably can do to AOSP whatever they want if they don't want official google services).

A friend of mine works in medical tech type approval, she's been saying for a while that some of the consumer stuff like apple watch etc. has been encroaching on actual medical devices and there the rules are way stricter than for consumer wearables.
True, which is why it is always clearly stated that these are NOT medical devices. When they do your point will have some relevance.

I still believe that the look of the S22 -non-Ultra- was the best, and S23 and 24 (if the images you show are of that) are a step backwards. I liked how the extrusion encolsed the cameras and those looked pretty cute.

But what about the App Store automatically updating apps I don't want my apps automatically updated I want the updates but I want to be able to choose when I install them so they're not installing while I'm using the device or waking up the next day and finding that an app doesn't work.

because if you're not the root user then it's not your phone
I'm sick and tired of the shitty Exynos processor man... it's the same price and it doesn't do as well as the SD 1... battery sucks too. As someone who's used every single Samsung since S2 (mixture of Notes, Folds, Flips, S') by far the best one has been the S23U and now going back to an Exynos processor I'm just fed up. May as well switch at this point, they clearly are experimenting with their users that are loyal and don't give a shit.

Samsung laughs about audio jack when Apple removes it, then copies it. Apple removed chargers from their boxes, Samsung makes fun of it, the copies it. iPhone is now titanium, Samsung copies it. Yeah… very original.
Samsung announced it and most likely had it planned before Apple did the iPhone with it. Which is probably why people have issue with Samsung's announcement and release schedule, the release is after everyone else has released their phones (in early to mid of the following year for Samsung's most current release), which makes it appear like they copied, but they announced the construction of the phone 4-5 months before they release it.
I'm sorry, but I believe it was the opposite this time, according to announcement timing.
This is probably falling on deaf ears at this point (and those that support Apple heavily at that, judging by the comment being replied to).

@@Enivoke For the audio jack and the removal of chargers, they just realized they can get away with it and milk the customers further. For the titanium its just a marketing gimic, the main thing these manufacturers need to do is to convince customers with little to no knowledge on why their phone is cool. A way they do this is to show that the phone is comparable to an iPhone. Like if Samsung released a titanium phone before apple did, it would not be a big deal at all. But now that apple made it cool and "revolutionary", Samsung uses this opportunity to convince customers on why their phones is even better than their competitors.

i think he explained in a recent video that the difference is that there was evidence of Google intentionally doing unfair things with their App store, in the form of emails that they managed to get their hands on
Also, Apple is doing it on their own App store that is installed on their phones. But Google is bribing other phone manufacturers

@@fmmderetarzi Honestly Samsung was a great option when their flag ship's were half the price of a flagship iPhone, now they just price them basically the same. Also as someone had a lot of midrange Samsung phones, they never last, random shit always fails on them. I would personally recommend checking out other android manufacturers for great prices, and phones that actually last.
Apple phones are great, but apple's practices of not allowing repairs of something you own pisses me of to a different level.

Very curious about the Oppo, The recent OnePlus and Oppo phones have done away with the traditional over reducing noise and adding sharpening to compensate. Detail and noise wise it genuinely looked better than any other phone in the MKBHD blind test (I cropped everything heavily) as someone who runs a modded Gcam on his Pixel to compensate for that behavior I'm excited about it.
Plus that sensor will probably allow for super high quality video, RAW video files will probably have quite a bit of range

Exynos in Europe = RIP to European Scamsung sales. The only reason why the S23 series sold so well was the improvements noticed by people moving from the Exynos garbage to Snapdragon for the first time. Nobody is going to be willing to pay a premium to downgrade back to Exynos.

The Google thing is important as it's in the US but both Google on Android and Apple on iOS are going to do the same, and much more, in the EU in a few months.
This is a good thing but, unfortunately, the vast majority of users will continue to use the Play Store and the App Store. Not that I pity Google (the 700 million are about 1 month earnings of the Play Store) but we see again how Apple gets away with anything in the US.
