    Having spent 18 months researching the history of my paternal ancestry, I am fairly certain that the Anrothan story was false, and was most likely created to help smoothe their way into medieval Tyr Connail. The name Suibne is not the name of our eponymous ancestor, but was a Hibernianised version of Sween, or Swein, who was the son of Kenneth Haraldsson and a king of the Galgaidhel (foreigner-Gaels), who ruled Man and the southern Hebrides (Sudreys). He died in 1034 AD. There are several other actual inaccuracies in this video, including the origins of the McQueens (in parts of the Highlands the letter S is apsirated after the Mac prefix, so MacSween beomes Mac'ween - there was no eponymous ancestor named Queen); the extent of MacSween lands, and their relationship with the MacDougals (and MacDonalds), who changed sides after John Comyn was murdered by the Bruce, are also inaccurate. Of all the families of West Highland or Hebridean origins who went to Ireland, only the MacSween were able to conquer their own territories and choose their own alliances; they became fosterers, in-laws, and protectors of the O'Donnells, who in turn inaugurated each new McSweeney chieftain of Fanad. The English recognised the MacSweeneys as first amongst the lords in Ireland, even in the parts of Ireland they weren't lords, 'such is the want of their friendship or protection.' In one way the MacSweeneys are fairly unique in British and Irish history, inasmuch as they were a military dynasty of the nobily who continued in their profession of arms for many centuries, having taken part in almost all of the most important battles to have occured in Britain and Ireland since Clontarf in 1014, including numerous battles during the Wars of the Roses, the English Civil War, and in the Napoleonic Wars, when they fought on boths sides, and may have even faced each other in battle. They had been vassal lords of Edward I and were opposed to Robert the Bruce, who they saw as a usurper, and built the first castles in Scotland, employing defensive innovations that didn't appear in France for another century - only Kenilworth Castle has crosslet loopholes earlier than Skipness. Members of the family were awarded lands in England during the 15th Century, and several families of the nobility claim their decsent from the MacSweeneys, including the Earls of Manchester, the Montaguts, and the Dukes of Buccleuch.

      I think you may have misheard the video, i never actually state their descent at any point, i merely gave the sources of claimed descent and who wrote it, i would love you to point out any the other inaccuracies you spotted as i am always willing to learn and will correct them where i can.

      Im from America my ancestor John MacQueen was a covenanter brought over in 1685 he was a MacQueen of Corrybrough whom the story goes that the MacQueens of Corrybrough (chattan confederation) were descent of a Roderick Dubh Revan Milmor vic Isaak MacSweyn. Its claimed he went with Moira MacDonald when she married Malcolm Beg Mackintosh the 10th chief of that ilk. His last name being wrote as MacSweyn as him being a sept of the MacDonalds of ClanRanald i would think he was descent of the Sweens of castle Sween just south of there. I also think the MacQueens of Skye came from the same people. And of course some of these bloodlines ended up with norse ydna instead of celtic but my dna is of the original celtic i am R1b M269 my closest match is what they call Irish type II

    • @Clans_Dynasties
      @Clans_Dynasties  3 роки тому

      Yes one family of the McGrath family is from Thomond, Although there are multiple McGrath families including a famous Ulster family, thats the problem with patrynomic names you always find multiple families and sometimes the families history overlap even when there is no known blood relationship. When i come across 2 'big' families with the same name and no known relationship i have to try and either find a link or decide to put them in the same video or separate videos which adds to the time it take to make them.

    So do the sweeneys have norse blood and were they descended from the ui imair ivar the boneless? Alot of sources say they are mixed norse and gealic blood and suibhne and his ancestors were norse.

    • @Clans_Dynasties
      @Clans_Dynasties  3 роки тому +2

      I would say the possibility of having maternal norse connections is 99.99%, The clans personal history states they or parernal Irish descent, although how much of that is true only DNA testing will prove this in time, The Ui Imair are decended from someone called Ivar but there is no conclusive evidence this is Ivar the Boneless again we may have to wait for archleogical finds and DNA testing to give us some answers, much like the recent ones done on Somerled (MacDougall, MacDonald proginator) who was often sometimes thought to be of Irish descent but testing has shown most likely Norwegian father, Irish Mother.

    • @amanb8698
      @amanb8698 2 роки тому +1

      @@Clans_Dynasties Yup that's what I meant earlier. The McDonald's Clan Founder is said trace his line back to its origin which is said to have started from one Norse parent and one Gael parent. Somerled was found to have been born to a Norwegian male and an Irish female. Hiberno-Norse, or Norse Gaels. Ironic that my McDonald side is through my mom, and i'm part Norwegian on my fathers side. Ironically from Southwestern Norway which was an area where people from the Isles were brought into Norway (Women mainly). Full circle lol. So as i've said I do know that it worked reverse too, Norwegian men went to Ireland and Scotland, Irish and Scottish women were brought to Norway and the settlement of Iceland, of the 3 Scandinavian North Germanic nations the Norwegians and the Icelanders especially, have the most Irish and Scottish ties, even DNA wise, as well as with Germans, Dutch, and English, due to the Hanseatic league etc., so they pull more Northwest Europe, and it's evident in looks too, with many very or somewhat Irish/Scottish looking folks showing up often in the Norwegian and Icelandic populations, and maternal Irish DNA. Ironically R1b also predominates in Southwest Norway, and in Norway and Iceland, as a whole as opposed to Denmark and Sweden where I1 predominate. However it developed independently in Norway and is related to the Germanic R1b which is itself related to the Celtic R1b and all, but via the same Bell Beaker Culture as the others, this culture is is said to have started near the Rhine and the Celtic Halstatt Culture and Iberian cultures probably originated from that. However Iceland seems even more influenced as while paternal lines of Norwegian stock, and a majority of maternal lines are of Irish and Scottish stock, from captured women brought there. So the Icelandic people on average are essentially half/50% paternal Norwegian DNA/ and half/50% Irish maternal DNA.

      Short answer: No
      Long answer: patrynomic names often lead to this issue, Mac Donnell son of Donald or Domhnall and O'Donnell is a decendant of Donald or Domhnall, They are different Donalds, The O'Donnell are decended from Conall Gulban (check out the O'Doherty video as they are related) and the Mc Donnell are of Norse-Gael origins, From clan Donald with the proginator being Somerled......Although both names are interchangeable so there are likely people descended from both these lines bearing the others name......And the fact that there was undoubtedly other Donalds or Domhnalls roaming around the gaelic world having children added to the mix also. It really makes researching these videos interesting thats for sure.

      @@mikeoxsmal8022 the Northern Uí Néill was a complete fabrication trying to legitimise and confederate the various tribes of the Cenel Conaill and the Cenel Eoghain through fake genealogies. Only 1/5 of men native to Ulster have the haplogroup marker of Niall Noígíallach.
      The Southern Uí Néill were the true Uí Néill.

      @@mikeoxsmal8022 Conal Gulban and Eoghain were NOT sons of Niall Noígíallach. This fake genealogy was added to give the Cenel Chonaill and Cenel Eoghain a relationship with the Southern Uí Néill who were the traditional Kings of Tara.
      Both groups of tribes remained isolated and are the native Feni people who lived in the Vennicnii area of Ptolemys map.
