Watching a vintage story veteran not know about packed earth makes me feel a little bit better about how bad I am at this game.
@@ultimape Well it's the first time I am playing with soil instability, so using packed dirt as anything other than grass suppression is foreign to me.
cave ins and soil integrity is like. a core part of the game to me at this point
I had more fun with it than I expected!
I always play with soil integrity on now, it just makes the game more interesting. But the dirt blocks chasing you like a wolf feels sus
Yeah, I enable them in the default based settings too. Cave ins can be rough though because you can get seriously stuck underground.
Same here, love them both
I tried the soil out back in 2020, and it’s felt too wrong to
play without it since. Same with the cave-in’s from last year, it just feels too weird without it
Its rsther funny, i just finished watching your island vid and then Hazzor uploaded HIS Vintage Story video. I finish that one and then YOU go and upload another one.
Wonderful timing
@@hawkticus_history_corner Sometimes universe work in mysterious, yet fortunate ways!
There's a guy called rubix raptor he's got a video on it as well worth a watch for sure! Be warned tho, he plays in a group of "deranged homicidal" friends so it's much more chaos and tomfoolery
the timing on this upload was absolutely PERFECT for my vintage story cravings, much love to my favourite vintage story content creator
@@cash7018 Your favorite! That's nice to hear. Enjoy, I put a lot of love into this one.
When I first played 1.20 VS, I absolutely shat my pants when I saw the spider-like drifter
These things are terrifying
They are pretty goddamn scary. They did a good job with the new monsters looking horrifying.
I think there's a mod that turns them into something like slimes
What a great time to be alive, Oscillascape uploaded another video!
@@Henri-117And it's a big one:)
The way I almost threw my mouse across the desk when I saw you uploaded
God damn I am so excited!
Wow, mice are expensive 😔 Don't do that 🤣
@@Oscillascape Mice can survive being thrown across the desk unless they are a biological mouse or a razer mouse
A great vid! I find it so heartwarming that you make those little stops from time to time to enjoy the beauty of the world around you, it just feels like something all of us need right now. Your notes at the end all seem pretty fair! Personally I have nothing against you enabling the map, as you said, navigation in the game is lacking without it. On the same note, I'm down for anything you decide to do, actually! You make an interesting episode out of anything honestly. And I do think that it's important to have the freedom to shape one's playing experience, it's not often that I find someone able to appreciate a game on so many levels and have such a pleasant experience following the same relatively simple progression plan while also making it engaging to watch :) All in all, really like your vids, glad you posted, best of luck to you and your family, looking forward to more of your vids!
@@alantyto3627 Gota stop and smell the roses sometimes! This was all the default generation too which I complained about in my recent video. The game looks so good in good biomes.
Oh! I just want to say that the flint rock that are on the ground work the same as the ore nuggets! Meaning that underneath the dirt blocks there are some flint stones on the rock, just like when you find copper nuggets, and there is some copper ore underneath. thats an easier way to get them in large quantities! I discovered on this version while trying to get more flint, it makes me appreciate it more tbh
Great video BTW! I love your channel a lot i wish you the best with your new dad life!
@@Paryeee Is that so? I will have to test this.
@@Paryeee Thanks! I get so many nice and sweet comments. I really appreciate each and every one.
The timing on this one is insane! I just learned about this game yesterday when one of your videos came up in my recommended, and I immediately had to give it a try! I love watching and learning from more experienced players when I'm starting on a new game. I'll definitely keep watching while I struggle to make it into the copper age from my hobbit hole 😂
@@juice3167 We all have been there! The game is complex and hard to master. Good luck in the copper age.
I did not know wilderness survival was that hard, my very first playtrough was in that mode, so I got used to it, and when I joined servers and I did not get one shotted by a bear, I just tought they tweaked the dammage to be low. I even traveled to the north and did not have much cold. The aurora borealis were pretty good though :)
I actually was kind of amazed that the dirt did not fall and kill me xd
Yes l, it's significantly harder than default settings. Kind of funny you got to experience the game with those settings. Not having a map is pretty brutal in comparison.

BEAUTIFUL house!! This is my favorite episode yet. Loved all the builds, you're such a good builder! Lovely house man this was so cool. Yeah give yourself a compass and cartography table mod or something, I would really enjoy seeing a 200 days episode!
@@tarryncooper4742 Thanks. Truthfully, it's not hard to build if you have a lot of inspiration and there are so many amazing Minecraft builds that exist that give me ideas and direction!
Congratulations on your little one. Your channel is new to me along with Vintage Story and I've really enjoyed your different playthroughs. Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you! Vintage Story is great and I love making content for it. Every one of the videos is a passion project.
All I can say is that the devs did a really great job on making these creatures terrifying. The first time my friends and I discovered the bowtorn I literally got jump scared and started sweating. Then I found a shiver a few hours later and ran for my life screaming. Anyway, You do a really good job on these, very well done. :)
They are a big upgrade over the drifters. Very quality additions to the game and just what we needed.
I've only ever played with soil integrity and cave ins and it always confuses me when I watch a "let's play" with those off. Your initial days were much harder than they needed to be simply because you weren't used to it! I bet you'd find it much easier with the knowledge gained from these last 100 hours. Love seeing how you improved as well. from discovering packed dirt to dealing with cave-ins. the first time you met copper you would dig from bottom first which will always cause cave-ins. By day 29 I'm seeing you dig from top down (proper way) which prvents cave ins. Love it
Good eye. I did learn to dig down to avoid cave-ins. Kind of make support beams pointless once you figure that out. Also packed dirt was a big discovery. I guess I thought it was a type of soil. Who knew it was stable 😂
@@Oscillascape Yeah beams seem pretty pointless once you realize you can make the rooms as big as you want as long as you dig from top to bottom. You can also check the block inspection at the top, it will state instability. If instability is 0% you're in no danger for digging. IF over 0% then it might fall. I couldnt figure out how to use beams properly to be honest. I just ended up using pillars when needed, and only when I realize there's a bunch of stuff above me. Still I found the easiest method to just try to dig down if I can. And still to this day I sometimes dig bottom up on accident - it feels satisfying to do it that way for some reason. And yeah, it is odd packed dirt is stable for some reason :D
Omg a new one !
Thank you so much
I always love more 100 days vintige story videos ❤
So happy to provide more Vintage Story content!
I always imagine the Wilderness survival being a result of an evening where the devs got drunk and just riled eachother up on how to make players suffer.
Good job surviving this challenge!
@@Daniel-rr8ih Well I died a lot 😉
This was amazing! I was really anxious watching you narrowly dodge death before you got your first gear. Well played!
Sometimes you just have to go for it, I was definitely sweating in that moment though!
Awesome video! It inspired me to try out the same gamemode for the first time. I'm actually really enjoying the challenge of not having a map haha. Shout out to your kiddo for helping :D
Not having a map feels more immersive. I just kind of suck at visual memory and get lost easily. They just need to add a compass!
@@Oscillascape I agree actually, especially since using the sun as a compass can be incredibly difficult most days as the skies are almost always cloudy to the point where the sun isn't even visible 😅
Absolutely loved this video, you are a very patient person.
Ha! So I have been told. Thanks for a sweet comment ♥️
I absolutely did not expect the insertion of Winnie the Pooh. Great video as always.
If you ever get lucky with limestone again, building with a combination of limestone cobble and light mudbrick is my favourite go-to. The colors and textures fit perfectly together.

Ha! Another vote for 200 days. Good to know 🙂
Looking forward to the 200 days video! And 3, 4 and 500! Whitnessing you go throug the progression is great fun :D
But I understand if you wanner start over with different worldgen rules, using the lesson learned here in terms of having acces to a map, more time under water, less cold damage and so on
Truthfully, fresh 100 day episodes do better. Most people don't want to start with part 2. Regardless, I will likely do multiple follow ups this year. 300 days plains and valleys and 200 days wilderness survival is on the docket.
I love these videos man, they help me sleep at night

Would love to see another hundred days in this world! Maybe exploring more of the 1.20 content like a moose mount or the bigger boat since you built the dock for it already
That would be the plan for 200 days. Make steel, explore lore stuff and return back home safely somehow without a map?

God damn, your usage of music to elevate the narration was inspired, if not outright talented 🙏
It's like you timed the music and the rhythm to your words. You're driven as fuck, I respect the effort 🔥

I guess the first day too as this was uploaded 19hrs ago but oh well
Great time to be a Vintage Story fan! 😎
So close 🤣
@Oscillascape I love that it's getting more attention! Also best of luck with the little one!!
Don't know if you'll find it later (not that far in the video yet) but immediatelly after you are in the world and move forward there is high fertility soil on the left. That's a very good find!
You could have saved on a lot of wood and glass by using slabs. Slabs also work for the greenhouse (if placed on the bottom half)
You are right about the slabs. Also I did get some high fertility soil, maybe the exact one you mention. I just don't find it useful in a vacuum. I like to grow everything in predefined batches where things mature at the same time. Little bit OCD on that 😮
pro tip:
you can make hunters backpack by using raw hide and fat to make fur, and then recycle your reed baskets; as they use cattails ;)
You can recycle reed baskets? That's dope, gotta try that! I knew about Hunter's backpack. You're right, I should have upgraded to that, considering I had a lot of hides turn into rot anyway.
loved the skyblock run! excited to get into this one:)
When panning sand and gravel, you can set the blocks on dry land. Only you as the player need to be standing in water for the pan to work.
I know that! I panned a lot in my Skyblock challenge. Thanks for the tip though.
Cattails are neat plants. Who knew they were useful for survival.
@@mosshivenetwork117 They serve an integral part in the tech progression.

When playing survival mc with my 8 y/o daughter, she created a huge tower of dirt so we could find our way back to base. Never forgot that trick (and expanded on it) but I'm sure youre aware, but without maps landmarks are key.
@@tonechild5929 I didn't utilize it as much as I should have. I think having lots of open space and water made navigation easier. In a more typical map, I think self-made landmarks would be key.
My first shiver encounter was me digging outside my house in the complete dark with an oil lamp, a shiver ran at me from the dark, I screamed loudly, at 11 at night, scaring my boyfriend as well lol
I did spoil myself a bit. So I knew a bit about the sheever, but it's certainly scary. Can't imagine running into one as a surprise.
My guy learned the word "ubiquitous" this week.
Smart am I. English really good I have.
there is a mod which adds progression to navigation (physical map), it goes from nothing to compass, then temporal compas (coords) and the last is a map like in vanilla,
@@theballsman3818 I think that would make sense for wilderness survival. It's a little weird that there isn't even a compass!
@@Oscillascape you can turn on coordinates and compass in world gen settings
@@StückaEsser The whole point was to play in Wilderness Survival which had these settings disabled. Otherwise, I am very aware of the existence of the map/coordinates!

Of course there’s limestone everyyyyywhere for you lol I had to gather enough shells for 4 large hides 😂 it was painful
lololol thats my first worlds ive since map seed farmed worlds to get a good map seed with everything kinda close by
@ I like going all natural spawn in find a nice looking area to settle in with good stability and branch out from there. once I have good infrastructure if I find a spot orientated around better resources I move then!
I know of the pain of looking for limestone. Been there done that! But this was easy as hell.
Sometimes you get good seeds and sometimes you don't. Random is random! 🤣
I think people commit to settling down too early. That's one of the reasons you don't see me make bases early!!
Ah, yes, the stage of "I'm so fucking sick of gathering wood just to burn it so I'm gonna turn a forest into charcoal and I'll never have this problem again"
Redwoods are so amazing for this process! Beautiful and useful, what a tree.
To not deal with soil instability when using dirt for walls you need to use packed dirt which is simply 6 dirt in the crafting grid (middle and bottom row of the crafting grid) and its a 1 to 1 recipe so you get the same amount of dirt you put in back out as packed dirt.
This!!! Also you can combine 6 packed dirt to make rammed earth, which is functionally the same but looks grey instead of brown. That way you can mix them to make a more aesthetically pleasing dirt hut
@@MegaRazorback Obviously I knew about existence if packed dirt. I just didn't think it would also be stable, this is my fist time playing with instability. So yes packed dirt is goat!
@@tonechild5929 That's a cool tip. There are so many blocks I am unfamiliar with and rammed dirt is one of them!
@@Oscillascape Yeah packed dirt and rammed earth ignore the soil instability checks even with full instability enabled as it technically acts like stone which doesn't have the instability flag.
53:15 Yeaaaaaah, that's stupid. That is literally t-shirt temps for me (especially when you're on foot / moving). lol
If you want another fun challenge that really changes your playstyle, play cavemen mode with all the Fauna of the Stoneage mods enabled. It adds a lot more animals, including more predators, and changes some spawning behaviors. Other good additions would be all the Herbarium / Wildcraft mods, Hardcore Water, Primitive Survival, Hydrate or Diedrate, Butchering, Lichen Continued, Rivers (needs ocean generation, also might cause some extreme terrain in the plains & valleys mod if you want to use that), and maybe Toolworks & Toolworks Additions if that gets updated / forked for 1.20. The Cairns mod seems to also still work with some workaround and can be used to help navigate without a map by dropping them as little markers along the way. But I agree that the game does not work too well without the map, especially when it comes to mapping ore locations. Maybe if there was more an in world mapping system that you need to feed with paper & coal to have at least something more stylized to work with.
Small tip to deal with bears and other predators for that matter: Dig a deep enough pit with a pillar in the middle that has a ladder block on all four sides to cling onto. That way you can jump against the pillar and climb up, while the predator falls into the pit. Just make sure it's deep and wide enough for a bear.
Thanks for all the fun mod suggestions. I will be doing stuff with lots of mods and sometimes more vanilla flavor. Trapping bears is the only way to stop them from respawning, so great advice on trapping them.
Masochist playthrough - love it 😁
@@t.a.6915 It could be worse! But yes, there are some masochistic settings in wilderness survival.

with the soil/ stone instability, it makes actually putting up posts and beams necessary.
id's suggest on the 200 days video to add pathways using packed dirt, etc, to map out routes and make use of signs to help navigate without the map.
Maybe? The problem with instability is that it still doesn't affect most blocks. I don't see the need to use support beams at all. Trying to imagine a scenario where it's worth the effort and failing to be honest.
That makes sense! Although it's a large commitment. If this was my long-term forever world I would commit to such endeavour though.

"He doesn't know about packed dirt, does he?"
I learned about it in the video. If you watched the whole thing, you would have known 😏
Boy howdy, do I empathize with the "building too big" in both VS and Minecraft, I often end up doing all the beginning steps, finding a place and layout that satisfies me, building my base, and going "damn, that was a lot of grinding, I need some variety" and go play a different game and the cycle repeats...
I have a bad habit of under estimating scale. Just look at my plains and valleys mega build for reference!

Man, I couldn't imagine doing full vanilla run on Wildness Survival, the loss of navigation plus the unavailability of QoL mods is too high a hurdle for me.
@@manana1444 I think I wanted to see what vanilla would feel like after playing with mods for over a year!
I think its always worth trying. As I've gotten older, I always start on the harder difficulties first then work backwards. When I was younger I would use cheats or mods that made games easier. The thing is I've found I get much more bang for my buck with games (more hours, because slower progression) and more satisfaction by overcoming harder difficulties. So I really try to avoid QoL or cheat mods because I worry it cheapens the experience. THat doesnt mean I dont use any, and if it comes down to not having fun I'll def add whatever is needed. For me it's just easier to avoid getting too comfortable and then bored by starting with the biggest challenge then working myself down. Once I switched to this method I just got better at games in general and also increased my self-confidence in what challenges I can endure. There's a "sweet spot" thats different for everyone where challenge is most fun. It can't be too hard, or too boring, and respect your time. I just try to challenge myself and shoot for something a bit out of my comfort zone.
Check out the new wattle & daub building blocks!
Cool, I will play with them in my next video! Thanks for the tip.
