Great info, just ordered one of your clips. I'm resurrecting an 82 750 I've owned since new that's been sitting for about 19 years. I had to think a bit before I remembered the starter noise.
Thanks man 👍. That’s awesome you still have your bike from new...not too many people can say that for sure. Hopefully the clip will help out on yours as well...it got mine back to starting each time with out grinding the gears so, although my gears are pretty much worn out, at least they won’t wear any further. All the best ! Steve
Hello, thanks…there’s an eBay link pinned in the comments for the clip clip, but I also have two of the kits out there right now as well that has the preinstalled clip clip on the OE Cir-Clip as well as the side cover gasket. What is the purpose of the clip thats on the starter motor itself? Mine came off when I removed the original starter motor and I cannot find a good explanation of its function
Hey ! The smaller cir-clip on the starter is there to make it stop rotating quicker when the start button spins released. The quicker the starter motor stops turning, the faster the Bendix gear will pull back once the motor starts so the clip helps just a bit to keep the Bendix from grinding against the flywheel.
@@StevesDIYs Thanks for the quick response. I have been having to deal with a crap ton of starter issues with this bike and I was freaking out when I just found that clip laying in the hole where the motor was supposed to insert. Thanks for explaining the clip purpose, helps alot.
Hey Steve! Thank you for the videos working on the virago, they’ve been extremely helpful with my newest project. Do you happen to have an updated link to the clip on ebay?
Hey man, thanks...glad the videos are helpful ! I ran out of the clip material I make them from, but have more material on order...should be about a week and I’ll have some more made and listed again on eBay 👍. I’ll update the link pinned in the comments for the video with the new listing, but I’ll also reply back to your comment with the link so you’ll have it once I post them back up👍. All the best ! J C , thanks man 👍. Yep that’s about all the clip is. I tried regular copper tubing, but it wasn’t strong enough and stretched when I pressed it onto the bendix spring clip so it didn’t add the right amount of squeeze. Send me an email at Stevesdiys@gmail.com if you want to and I’ll let you know what I used if you wanted to give that a try 👍
Hello, yes, it basically keeps the wire ring clamp tighter (or the diameter smaller like you said 👍). The effect of tightening the wire ring is actually interesting because it does two things…1st it increases the friction so when the flywheel tries to speed up after the compression stroke pushes it really fast, it keeps it from going as fast so the Bendix gear stays engaged better (the starter goes too slow to keep up with the flywheel immediately after the compression stroke). It also adds the extra friction so when the Bendix gear is pushed onto the teeth of the flywheel, it pushes it much harder and doesn’t allow it to bounce on the teeth so it engages back into the flywheel teeth and doesn’t just grind the gears together. The metal clip clamp needs to provide the correct amount of additional tension though…too much and it makes the starter motor work too hard…too little and it will still allow the gears to jump out and grind. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve
👍. Yep, if you want to, send me an email at stevesdiys@gmail and I’ll send you a link to a video on how to make one since shipping international is really expensive (I sell them out on eBay as well). Yes, I put them on my 1st Gens and no longer have problems with the gear grinding 👍
Hey man ! The clip is for the ‘81-‘83 xv750 and the 920’s (they don’t have the big solenoid on the top of the left side cover). Mine are ‘81 and ‘82 v750’s (the ones in most of the videos on the channel).
Thanks man 👍. For the side cover bolts (or any of the 6mm bolts on the motor) the torque spec from the manual is 10 Nm or 7.2 ft-lbs for the most part. Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

Hey man ! For the 2nd Gen motors (like the ‘95 1100), the starting system is quite a bit different than these 1st Gens. They did a design change on the starting system so yours should have a solenoid that is out side of the motor with a mechanism that holds the Bendix gear out when starting so you wouldn’t need the clip. The Bendix gear and starter parts for yours should still be available online from the motor sports type sites since it is newer and they kept that design for many years. For the 1st Gen bikes, we are stuck with doing things like adding the clip clamp or making the change to installing a 2nd Gen side cover and the upgraded starting components for some motors that they put an additional shaft boss in. I think even the Bendix gear is different in the slope of the inner gear teeth for the 2nd Gen. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve
