Just speculating here, maybe skipped timing on the cylinder with the stuck valve. Chain not tensioned tight enough. then when it hit the piston bent the valve shaft a bit and would not move back in correctly. Once you remove the valves that will tell you the story. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
But it's drive shaft right no chain, I have this bike. I don't know much about bikes just trying to slowly get it going..
@@stetsonharrison8951 He's talking about the cams.
@@stetsonharrison8951 Cam timing chain inside the motor.
The broken cap is for access to the flywheel nut. It is meant to be just lightly torqued as they have an o'ring seal. Users get confused by the directional arrow for manually turning the motor over. They end tightening it and breaking it off as in this case.
i broke mine off the first day i worked on it
I agree parting this one out is the right thing to do. Wheels and tank alone at you are making a profit on it.Great find for $100. Parts for this are worth more than what it will cost to put it back in running order.
Out of the bikes that I owned that XV was my favourite, I had one for 5 years, and wish I still had It
Yeah, sell the parts. Interesting video GG, big thanks!!
Verry interestig Video and nice to see how you detct the problem by attacing it step by step.
Got one I'm working on during the summer. Would have liked to see you make a cafe racer . Maybe find another, they are pretty popular for that kinda thing.
Great one, GG!. Get the manual, there are some digital copys out there..
That intro was sick!
In some curcumstances the hole becomes blocked or isn't big enough. The hole to the pipe that delivers oil to the camshaft. You can get camshaft seizures i think they do a replacement bearing so the cam spins on a bearing instead of a metal shim..but if oil delivery has been an issue the cam will heat up and seize. And their is a metal pin on the camshaft that can snap.
this makes me feel a lot better about mine shooting gas out the exhaust because a seal in the carb went bad.
I agree. 750 is a great buyers bike but not much of a legend bike. Thank you for another great GG vid my dude! I hope we can get our hands on a fkn "HAYABUSA"....JS
Small world! I just bought the same exact bike a couple weeks ago of of Facebook marketplace for 100$ same year and everything! I haven't tried to get it running yet, hoping for the best!
As you can see, these bikes have cam bushings instead of bearings. The cam will seize up in the bushing if it's not getting good oil flow. It is possible to replace the bushings with bearings.
Bummer was hopping you were going to try a fix it haha!
Working on a 82 xv920 myself and it’s been a nightmare. Hopefully the part out is profitable!
Me too! But I haven't started yet. I got a 82 xv920
Hey I’ve got a 83 xv920 I’ve been working!!!
Another great vid GG! I don't understand why we can't flip these turds in a single vid...the excitement is in the reveal. Right?
Btw FKN AWESOME VIDEO!!
That was fun thank you Great video.
I also got a 750 virago, it’s my second motrocycle project and the groud is not good. I will do a makeshift ground wire connecting to the frame
Bummer you aren't going to fix it but I know what you mean. Hard to get excited about something you don't really like. Hopefully another project will come along.
Don't you have to take the spark plugs out to turn it by hand?
My 82 virago was filled up too. Gas leaked past the carbs even in tank shut off position. Had to rebuild petcocks.
Probably the same thing that's happening to mine. Just got it and it was stupid full
Fuel is in the oil. The carbs are leaking from floats into the motor and into the oil.
It doesn't smell like gas though..
Yep, that fuel has been leaking into the engine over a long time, won't smell of fuel as it likley years old.
@@chrisgreenwood271 he's right.
Do you sell cab
@@GoldGuyRides😢
I had a 2007 250 virago. Always hated the name virago. Very reliable but nothing special about it at all. I'd recommend a 200 KTM for a new rider. I love my 390 Duke. I realised how basic my 250 was when I got my Duke. Thanks for the video.
You know what bad is? BAD IS YOU DUDE!!!
@@vtcmotors ok
Is that not the oil filter housing????
Great videos!
very nice engine. in this case no super heavy cardan shaft final drive. A known issue with the case hardening on the gears.=jumpimgout of bottom gear. jthe gears from the later xv1100 will go in...I been told.
why would you not check the timing first?
Nailed the disassembly and fortune telling to a T
You're right, not a legend bike
They just keep going and are simple enough to fix yourself
Where the carbs go? I don't see on ebay.
They sold, sorry!
Dont virago engines turn anticlockwise?
Yeah man 100$ for a part out bike. Hell you made a profit off me. But I'm happy. Cause I now have turning signals and a spare Starter Flywheel. So hurts to see it in pieces. But thank you for the parts I needed.
You got your money's worth, and a whole lot of headache's ahead of you if you decide to do more than turn it into spare parts for someone else's project. Sure the bikes are plentiful, and spare parts may be had, but these bikes have long histories of electrical failures, bad grounds, ills tuning the carburators for many, as well as reoccurring woes with the starter solenoids as they weren't redesigned for reliability until ten years after your model. Most people just mess them up by doing sketchy stuff to them, or by playing West Coast Choppers with them, making them even less worth the headache that they can become. If the bikes already this bad with the opening shot, count on major migraines for the rest of the repairs you'll be making in the future. If you must have a Virago, buy a later model made after 1993 that has the 1100cc plant onboard as it will have the power reserves you'll want once you get it out on the open road. Pay more, and get the best example, since these bikes will bankrupt you, and drive you nuts if it's been left unattended, or neglected at all.
Try to upload in 1440p so the bitrate is higher and the image looks better
I didn’t see it on your store but do you still have the virago oil filter cover?
Nope I sold it, sorry!
@@GoldGuyRides all good thanks for letting me know.
I have a carb/fuel question that you may be able to help with, I know you’ve worked on maybe different bikes/carbs
my xv750 virago is slowly getting put back together and i’m suspecting I might have a future issue with fuel system
I have the original gas tank and original carburetors and intake boots/manifolds.
I DONT have original petcocks. I have aftermarket petcocks with only 1 outlet for fuel (no vacuum line outlet that the OEM has). These petcocks have option of OFF/ON/RES.
Now, will i be okay with plugging the intake manifold outlets where the vacuum lines would connect to? and would the fuel still be pulled into the carbs when idling and reving the bike?
first thing you shouldve done was remove them spark plugs but thats the last thing ya do when ya remove the head LOL
Yeah you have a hell of a job
Any Harley owner will tell you an oil leak is just a sign of good character. The bigger the better.
My daughter bought a 1996 virago l/535 will not start
Any one know how to fix
OMG! before you said it, I guessed $100, LOL
A mate once told me that guesstimate what a vehicle will cost you in the first 6 months, take the paid price, double it, double that again, and add half. You probably spent about $500-600 in parts and labour costs, I'm guessing?
What became of the virago
@@JulianSmith-d9o I parted it out and sold almost all of the parts.
I’m in a similar situation with a Facebook Marketplace seller with multiple 85 Viragos for about the same price. Would any of your parts fit an 85 if I decide to buy it?
I’m looking at getting 3 bikes for $100-200 total to make one work and sell the rest (part out if need be).
Yes, my parts will also fit a 1985 model. You can get them here: www.ebay.com/usr/mcalistermoto
@@GoldGuyRides that was fast! Thank you! I’m new to your channel. Do you have other videos related to Viragos that might be useful in my project?
@@BuuTube nope, this is the only one. I bought this bike and just decided to part it so there aren't any more videos on it. Maybe I'll get another one in the future and fix it up.
I just traded a case of beer for a 1983. Hope it’s a better case than yours.
Definitely a candidate for a cafe racer conversion 👍
CDI will go for money if its good, whole lot of old parts sell decent
This guy is why often used parts are fubar
What’s wrong with your video aspect ratio?
Auto focus messed up and I didn't catch it
Nothing. Filled my tv.
@@randypullman1155 … It was only the first half or so of the video. And some TVs can auto-detect and compensate for odd aspect ratios…
Damn man you should have left that motor alone, I would have had that thing running in 10 minutes.
@@brichardwaters nah bud this was a non runner. Camshaft was seized due to oil starvation.
@@GoldGuyRides that valve was hanging open because the lobe was keeping it open.
Carb leaked fuel into the engine. It may have Hydro-locked.
Rockers might be over tort
I paid 260 for mines off marketplace
pretty sloppy mechanic
