    We need more guys like you in shops now. All of them refuse to work on older bikes because they can’t just plug a computer in and solve the problem. All these kids fresh out of MMI yet they have no idea how to do basic diagnostics.

      Thanks 👍. Yep, the local bike shops won’t hardly touch these old ones as they were never trained on the basics it seems. Just like auto shops and car dealers, if there’s no port to plug a computer into, they don’t seem to be able to diagnose anything any more lol. Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

      👍. Yep, it’s still having zero issues with the gear grinding since doing the mod over a year ago (it’s still the same worn bendix gear that was in it 👍 ). Machining the case really helps with the gear engagement and combined with the clip and shortening the spring a bit seems to have fixed the problem completely.

    Great videos!! I'm tired of my '83 XV750 grinding when I attempt to start it. I have two questions though. How many mm did you machine off of the inside of the side cover? How thick of spacers did you add to move the gear farther out? Definitely subscribed.
    Edit: rewatched it the video. 2mm. Your awesome man!

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  Рік тому +1

      Thanks ! I actually rotated the gear by hand to engage it to show how far it had been engaging prior to the modifications. Normally when the motor starts, the flywheel would spin it back out and disengage it, but I wanted to see how much further it engaged so I began the video part with it already engaged a bit.

    hi Steve, i tried flip the gear (the other side it appear newer than the other..), remove the spring, but need to realize the clip.... do yo think that machine the cover it's alway necessary or it could be enough to add a washer to increase the engaging of the gears??
    second question: which is the company of your drill?? i have the same and loos the handle and gear of slow going down... cannot find the spare parts.. also..did you add a fixing point to convert it from drill to milling machine ??

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  3 роки тому +1

      Hey man ! I don’t think it is really necessary to machine the cover and add the washer to make the starting tolerable, but it did seem to help some as well. Just adding a washer without machining the cover wouldn’t work though since the case prevents the gear from moving over and would be too tight with an additional washer if not machined. Also, flipping the gear over is not good as the other side of the gear is shaped differently in the teeth and will quickly wear the flywheel gear and damage it too (I wish they would take that video some guy did that shows up when “Virago starter problems” is googled as it has ruined a lot of flywheel gears IMO). Adding the clamp to the wire spring helped the most from my tests...there is a video of how to make one on the channel or I also have some on eBay if someone just wanted to buy one. For the milling machine question, mine is one of the original “Complex Machine” model RF-31 that was sold by harbor freight. It is very similar to the newer Central Machinery Model 33686 that is sold by harbor freight more recently. I’m not sure if parts can still be bought for them though as these models are a bit older. Hope this helps 👍. Steve

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  3 роки тому

      Roberto Sandoval , thanks man ! Is yours missing the curled spring (like the one I cut the last loop off of)? If it is missing this spring, putting the clip on should still help with the disengagement of the gears that makes the bad grinding noise (like you have to release the starter button and try to start it again because the gears disengaged totally). The spring does not help very much to other than to keep the bendix gear from slightly rubbing on the flywheel gear as you are riding and making a little rattle noise. I’ve read that some people just remove the curled spring so this may be what the previous owner of you bike did. Just a note, adding the clip doesn’t help much with the noise the starting system makes...it’s main purpose is to help the gears not disengage fully which causes the grinding of the starter. Hope this helps 👍, Steve

      @@StevesDIYs thaks man. i was thinking that the spring function is return the gear, so I will try with out the curled spring. Im from mexico and is hard to find this things of old bikes.

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  3 роки тому +2

      Roberto Sandoval , 👍. Yep, the curled spring is not very strong...it can only move the gear away from the flywheel a small amount after the flywheel pushes it over from the motor starting. The action of the motor starting is what pushes the bendix gear over so it is released from the flywheel. I lived in SLP Mexico for several years, (yo hablo espanol...pero pokittttto, ja,ja) y yo recuerdo how difficult it was to find parts for my truck and motorcycle. All the best ! Steve

      Thanks man 👍. I actually just finished painting the motor for my Cafe build coming up in a few weeks so the timing is good on what steps I take to prep 👍. I’m sure there are other ways to prep and It’s a long read, but here goes lol: I always hang the motor up on something higher so I can see everything good. First I remove dirt and Non-oily stuff with soap and water then use an air compressor to blow the water that collects off. Next is scrubbing everything with gasoline to break down the oil that’s on the surfaces starting at the highest point and working my way down. To get inside the fins I take a toothbrush and grind the sides down so it will fit into the fins. After every surface has been scrubbed with gasoline and the motor blown off with air again, I take A Scotch-Brite scrubbing pad and rubbing alcohol and scrub between each of the fins that will be sanded after paint to be sure the paint will adhere to the fins and not flake off when the sides are sanded. I also Scotch-Brite the bigger surfaces of the motor with alcohol to be sure they are smooth. Next is to start at the top again and use rubbing alcohol and the toothbrush and go over all the surfaces one more time. Then the round covers are removed if they are to be a different color and they all get sanded and alcohol’ed. Alcohol with a rag on the surfaces where the covers came off and then tape up everything that doesn’t get painted. Finally time to paint the colors (which takes about 15 mins vs. the 4 hours of prep, lol). The black enamel will be dry to the touch in about an hour, but will still mark with a fingernail so while it’s still flexible I sand the fins using a small hard rubber block and 220 grit so it doesn’t sand around the fin sides (just sands the surface). Once sanded, I be sure to blow the motor off with air and wipe the big surfaces down with a soft towel as the sanding dust gets on everything. The last step is to clear coat the motor (which keeps the edges of the fins from peeling back and keeps the fins from oxidizing as the aluminum is bare from sanding on the fins). The clear is put on everything and that’s it 👍. I use the rattle can paint rated for 500 Deg F and seems to hold up well (my bobber paint job is about a year and a half old now and still looks like the day I painted it). Man that was a mouthful 🤣🤣. I should make a video of the prep and paint, as now that I think about it, there are a lot of steps to do, lol. Hi Steve i have an 1982 750 virago, I'm not massively mechanical minded is it best to shorten the spring or remove it completely as some seem to simply remove it? I'll be buying your Clip soon too.

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  3 роки тому +2

      Hey man ! I did try it both with just the spring shortened and also with it removed before, but I found that without the spring, I could hear the Bendix gear faintly rattling against the flywheel gear when the motor was running. I figure the spring helps just a little to push the gear away just at the last when it disengages and then keeps it back just slightly so it doesn’t touch the flywheel gear the whole time it’s running. I’ve seen some pics of the flywheel gear on some folks bikes on the forums and the teeth were worn very consistently and shiny which makes me think someone had removed the spring and the Bendix gear spent a lot of time bouncing against the side of the flywheel gear over the years. I just took one curl off of the spring so the gear could engage just a bit better on the depth, but still can push back a little. Removing the one curl makes it so that it will bottom out against the gear stop completely so removing anymore curls doesn’t really benefit anything in my opinion. Thanks man and all the best ! Steve

      Hello, it’s made from copper, but has a tin coating on it which makes it look silver (that’s not needed though). It’s made from a big 4 AWG crimp-type wire connector that is the seamless type. I put some out on EBay for folks just wanting to buy one (here’s the link): www.ebay.com/itm/1981-1982-1983-Yamaha-Virago-Bendix-Clip-Clamp-Starter-Fix-xv750-xv920-xv700-/224435547617?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0 , but if you are a DIY’er like me, I also made a video of how I made them on the channel. • @StevesDIYs

      Yep, seems that there’s not much more that could be easily done to actually fix it. I’m sure some re-engineering could be done to fix it, but wouldn’t be something folks could easily do (at least anything I could think of). The bouncing gear is for sure annoying, but at least now it doesn’t jump all the way out and grind like crazy 👍. All the best ! Steve
