Congratulations Yakko, you have officially made your transition from “popular by tangential relation” to “Gacha Boy”. Your reward is a horde of ravenous fans that will always ask you to review their favorite gacha game and the crushing sensation that you will never be able to recapture the good ole days. Nice!
@@xrosslegends1279 its more-so the sound (gasha) you get from vending machine-dispensed capsule toys and because of the same nature these games have with said machines gacha games were born as a term
re: that bit at 5:29 about gachas being sustained by a few players who pay thousands - that checks out for sure. one of my college professors used to develop games for a few different studios in japan, and he worked on a now-defunct gacha game at one point. there was one, single player the devs all *knew by name* because he was spending so much money that he was the main person funding their game and paying their paychecks. he'd call support and they'd legitimately be like, oh shit, it's him, get him a direct line to the devs, because they wanted him specifically to be as happy with the game as possible.
Wait... Did they really decided to not only wipe every user's progress on a JoJo gacha but also changed it's core gameplay from real time to turn based????? And no money refunded???? Yeah no wonder it died lmao.
Arknights is so f2p friendly it broke my tendency to whale. It's the only gacha game I can play anymore because of this 'cuz I'm too tempted to spend on others.
One thing I really like about arknights and I sadly don't find in any other gacha game, is that you just could play and mess up with the game and there is so much more to do than just clear a level with the most optimal team, I feel like in most gacha RPG (like epic seven, the other one I play) there not much uniqueness into each unit (at least in term of possibility) and even while there can be some great/cool unit combo, in the end, all you can do is clear the content the way it is intended to. Meanwhile, in AK you can bring up meme strat, cheese some level, clear hard stage with some the weakest character in the game and mess up with the fucking game physics, and it feels so refreshing, I really wish more mobile game will allow us to do these kinds of thing in the future.
My favorite gacha-game is league of legends - in that game, you always get 4 random-characters to help you in your team, and if the enemy got better characters, you are kinda fucked. Love that game.
Or you could.. Try to work with them? Sometimes I think people don't realize it's a team fighting game. Most of those people exclusively play marksman or fighters.
@@BloodsailAdmiralTdk no i think its more of a 1v1 with you having beginner-bots and your opp having intermediate ones. all your lanes lose and you get to fight that one guy on the enemy team thats always slightly more fed than you
@@s0leil883 I know right? My Greninja could've swept the long ass tower but of course they didn't wanna try it. The story was also somewhat interesting too (more interesting that Sword and Shield atleast lol) and they couldn't even managed that.
Honestly the way that FGO make you spend money is so big brain. At first glance, the way they make money just seems down right silly, as they don’t have any booster pack or something to incentivize spending money on the game. They don’t really make the player deal with AP problem unless you’re super invested in the or game or you just want to flex as the developers constantly bombards the player with GA. Not only that, the cost for the packs for SQ is just down right ridiculous at first glance. I mean $100 for like about 62 total worth of summons. The only real way they fact that they constantly release limited servant banner. By itself, it wouldn’t be that bad, but combine the banner with the story that they write for those limited banner servant is what really makes you spend money on the game. The problem I have most gacha game is that the character that they release for each banner is just boring. Sure they have their dialogues and their maybe skins, but other than that, they rarely have any anything to help them be flesh out as a character. This thus result in them being quite rarely pulled, at least for me, as I just don’t see the worth in them. That’s why, whenever I play the game, I only summon for characters that are either OP or a character that have made appearance in the game’s story. And that’s why FGO is just so ingenious. Almost every servant that is in the limited banner have an event or some sort of story for the character, and with these stories, story writers makes you understand who the characters are and how they are like. The story right make us understand their personality and make us understand just how cool these character. They make the character feel real, as degenerate as that sounds, and that what makes people, at least for me, want to pull for them. Take James Moriarty for example. In FGO, he’s a pretty boring character at first glance, a suspicious looking old man with a gun coffin that he can ride... okay maybe boring isn’t really a great way to describe him, but his kit isn’t really that strong or cool. So he was released along with chapter 1 of EoR, where James was the focus of the that chapter. At first, I wasn’t planning to pull for him, since he really wasn’t that strong, I already had like 3 other units that does his role but better, and I was saving for Ereshkigal, who is best girl. However, after finishing the chapter, I begin pulling for him, simply because he became such a likable character. It’s honestly scary how the developers drive people to spend money on that game, they don’t constantly force ads at your face or constantly force you to look at their “Special Offer”, which they don’t have (unless you count the Guaranteed SSR banner). The way they make you spend money on the is by making you do it on your volition. It can be best described with this meme: When you accidentally spent all your SQ for “bait” banner *SQ pack* : You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me.
Victor Yang That's the kind of way I like my gacha games to be. FGO shows care with their characters. If they can make you fall in love with a fictional character for a mobile game, that's saying something. They could've went the powercreep direction, and force players to spend, but no, they make sure all their characters come with a well laid out story.
As a free to play player, i feel like gachas are basically testing your luck, cause if you get shit characters it can be so boring but if you get good ones you feel like you can keep going on forever
Sadly still in a bad spot. There are people that just pull for the sake of grudge to 1 ko everything than actual take your time which js the game main focus (sadly the progression is too slow) and then proceed to complain said it's too easy which is no shit you spend thousands bucks without realize it lol you got brunout and still complain with full regret.
@@chenchen6150 It's a core reason why whales are a detriment in the long run. Whales who got all the opest units complain they have nothing to do so the next update introduces some new gimmick that is unbeatable unless you get some brand new units designed specifically to tackle this new gimmick and by COMPLETE COINCIDENCE are on a banner right now, so they get those, which by collateral makes the previous endgame stuff piss easy so they complain the game is too easy so the devs introduce some new gimmick and so on. Meanwhile 99% of the playerbase gets blocked from all the new content and events because they dared to not spend the GNP of a small country like those other players.
been playing dragalia lost since it came out, and it's the only one that I've genuinely enjoyed after a long period of time. I took so many screenshots of the april fools dog
I always thought the difference was that the features you mentioned for PC games were always considered problematic whereas in the gatcha community they're just normalised to uncomfortable degrees.
Recently I checked the storage of my phone and I had 50GB of just apps, mostly gacha games. A lot of gacha games I install but never play, this video most definitely inspired me to truly consider what games are worth keeping and what games aren't worth the time that I could use to be doing something else.
as someone who's been playing gacha games for almost 7 or 8 years(i forgot jesus christ) summoning is probably the only fun part of the game when you go to the game first time, and you end up getting addicted to the gameplay just to get gems/summoning currencies just to get your wives/husbands
Okay hear me out here. Instead of being on average predatory af with monetisation, not even pay for heavy advantage rather to win, being a gambling system hidden behind game play etc. Why don't you...idk NOT bake the horrible practice into the game from the start, sure you want that character? Let you outright buy it, membership sure to an extent. Even daily login bonuses, and random loot sure. But don't defend the entire system because it has a cute waifu, and hey I am someone that loves video games, manga, anime etc. Also I have no bloody idea why I was even suggested this video as I avoid games like this due to being broke af irl and being vulnerable to those mechanics.
ngl, I totally relate when you said that it's difficult to get into a gacha unless you're in from day one. The only 2 gacha games I ever spent money on, fire emblem heroes and yugioh duel links (duel links is pretty much a gacha at this point) I've only been able to not get lost in thanks to starting from day 1 or having background info in them. All the other games I try are always feel like I missed 2 months to several years worth of content and free premium currency that I can't keep up with everything
Great video and GREAT editing. Gacha games are, in a nutshell, a chase that never ends (sorta). We have polled over 1,000 people asking why they play gacha games and it all came down to the fact that they love the chance of getting something rare. Remember those mystery box subscriptions a year or two ago, when they were popular? It was all the craze and all the youtubers were opening them. And people were buying them because they wanted to get surprised, since a lot of us lead mundane lives (which is absolutely fine) and so we just sometimes need that rush of dopamine to feel more alive. And in the end, you do end up with a nice .jpeg of your favorite waifu :)
God, I remember forcing myself to grind feathers and horde orbs in FEH because I kept telling myself "Next month they'll add a character I like", "The _next_ banner will have an alt of a character I care about", _"Next month,_ FEH pass will sell a png of a character I actually want...!" I lied to myself like that for 4 years, and this year, I finally overcame the sunk cost fallacy and uninstalled the game, and it's like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I still appreciate FEH for bringing new fans into the franchise, and providing art and voiced lines for decades-old, forgotten characters, but it honestly seems to be getting less enjoyable the longer it exists (unless you're someone who only plays because you like tapping on the anime waifus. Those people are probably still having fun).
When you mentioned aggressive advertising it reminded me of AFK arena. I downloaded AFK arena when it launched on mobile and was enjoying it for a while. But every time I saw an ad that was a blatant lie about the gameplay, I started to get irritated at the game itself. I played for a while, but I got so fed up with the ads I uninstalled after about a month of playing.
Lucky you, I got an ad for Raid: Shadow Legends, Hero Wars, and that Seven Deadly Sins gacha back to back without the ability to skip, AND I HAD ADBLOCK ON!
I legit love the song Speed of Light from that ad, it at the very least is way more palatable then Raid. Honestly almost all mobile games I get into are because I love the OST that I had listen to.....though even I have my gatcha achilles heel......(looks side-ways at Love Live)
man, gotta say good video. you provide arguments from both sides which I can respect. I find it hilarious that if you say you don't like gacha mechanics, that people will automatically respond, "yeah, gacha mechanics suck but have you played [insert favorite gacha], it's not so bad." umm, no i didn't ask for a recommendation for a game I would hate and yes they are all bad still because they abuse 4 things: 1. Community peer pressure to perform (ranking, parties, leaderboards, etc...) 2. FOMO 3. gambling addiction and to a lesser extent 4. nostalgia/fanservice. IMO, no game should need to come with a warning label like it's a pack of cigarettes. I'd also note there are plenty of games out there that add content without making people gamble for it. love the content and attention to detail you put in this video.
As a gacha player myself I have to say that I love how well you know when to do be serious and when to joke around, I 100% have enjoyed each gacha related vid you have released. Love the work behind them
i think arknights is an example of a gacha game done extremelly well. i started playing the game roughly a month after release, and i have yet to spend any money on it, but i've still cleared just about everything in the game and i have some of the best characters. they give you a lot of the premium currency for free during events (which i usually spend on skins), and give you several guaranteed 5 stars as well as a guaranteed 6 star at the start (6 stars are the highest). also, it is possible to clear the whole game's story using no 6 stars and only the 5 stars you are guaranteed to get. (such as Amiya)
The way you showed Ayakashi Ghost Guild for some seconds made my heart hurt a bit, I kinda still miss that game (along with things like Devil Maker Tokyo and Terra Battle)
I just quit as soon as i find daily logins and missions become a chore To find myself browse the appstore looking for another gacha game to sink 10 hours a day into
Arknights is great, all you literally need to do is play the game, the dailies just complete themselves. It's also incredibly fun, I've been playing for a few days and it hasn't gotten boring, unlike other games I've tried.
Thanks for the recommendations, been an arknights player since day one and rly enjoying it. I tried out afk arena as well and its really fun, tho maybe bc its an old server i cant quite keep up with pvp, everyone is 1M power and above 😅
Leaving gacha games is quite challenging. I used to play hearthstone myself. And I wasted a lot of money on preorders (probably 120$ at least). Once I realised that nothing ever really changed, especially how blizzard treats their game, I left the game. It's been almost 1,5 years since, and I'm very happy with my decision
Maybe it's a me thing but I find it very hard to quit these kinds of games (mobile and gacha) due to habits I develop involving them. Like, what are you gonna do when you're on a bus to work/school/wherever? - you have a farming session in your fav game. When you've been doing that for long enough it's pretty hard to just stop doing it, it becomes an addiction like smoking, it takes effort to stop doing it. It took me months to actually stop playing games I didn't want to play anymore and I wasn't even doing anything productive in them.
Ya know what sucks? Being a game designer looking for jobs and seeing a lot of available jobs are from mobile game developers looking for designers that are skilled in predatory monetizing design. Then strongly considering it, swallowing your pride and virtues because you need a job. While I have considered it, thankfully I haven't gone that route in my career. I feel sorry for any designers that have.
I remember when magica record first released the English servers and I was super excited, having found the news right after watching anime it was based off of. I preordered it and played it everyday, until it it died unfortunately.. all I remember is feeling so badass with my 5*rena minami, and playing while I was supposed to be paying attention to class. the only thing that it actually gave me was that I realized I needed Joan d'ark as a magical girl, other than that.. I'm glad I was a poor child cause I would have definitely blew all my money for my waifus
And I'm still mad about it Not long after the whole fanfare as well with the first original magical girl debut for english server, the anime adaptation, and the next arc teaser I'm still bitter about it
18:48 I think that point doesnt justify gatcha. Nintendo games like animal crossing get free updates and support through internet. they dont preventing users progression if they dont spent more $$$$$$ in the game.
I have only played for a long period of time two gachas, destiny child and fgo. Destiny child i stoped playing bc i got tired of autoing quests while looking at bouncing anime tiddies, but i still play fgo every day, sure i know that the chances on fgo are some of the lowest on the gacha market but i still think it's one of the best ones out there bc 1. it actualy tries to be a game unlike many other gacha with story characthers and things you care about and not just some excuse for me to pay money 2. sure SSR characthers will most of the time be more efficient but almost all of the characthers in the game can be used for any type of activity no matter their rarity you just have to invest enough time and resources into them and finaly 3. the only thing you can buy is the currency wich you use to pefform pulls, not resources and you can directly buy a single characther, does this make it a pain getting your favourite servant, but it makes so the game never is direcly pay to win or pay to play. out of all of the gachas i've played fgo gave me the best experience and it's still a pretty fun game, i may be a little inclined to like it bc i like the fate franchise but at least this game is way more forgiving than any other gachas
Just one "mistake" is you can buy a servant but for that you had to be a massive whale. The Unregistered Spirit Origin "Summoning the same 5★ Servant for the 6th time and beyond" Which is super rare. Everything else I agree. Specially like saint quatz only give you the SSR, but if you want to level it up and his skills you will need to farm. And farm a lot. No money will make the SSRs level up I have been playing FGO for two years now, I have put some money and I won't say I made any friends to be worthy but I really enjoy the non PVP part of the game, the story/novel, and also the type of game where you play on your on and don't need to depend on anybody. It's fun, but yeah their gacha is the most ungrateful. I thought other games like Honkai Impact had better gatcha system but their game didn't hook me in.
I’ve been playing F/GO and DFFOO for years, hell since they dropped in JP, and the amount of time and strategy into those games that I have so much fun to this day lol so I hate when gachas get a bad rep for being bad :p
I actually deleted 4 gacha this past week due to that feeling of “what the hell am I doing with my free time and money?!” Now I have my three core ones, which I’m F2P in 2 of. I can definitely relate to a lot of this video. Very well made, excellent work!
Luke T I kept Dokkan Battle, Grand Summoners and Epic 7. E7 is my casual game, GS is not too heavy content-wise which I like so I only play for 10-15 min most days. Dokkan Battle I’ve been playing for almost 5 years soooo kind of hard to stop that one lol.
v Gold thanks, you too! I ended up using 600 ds, went hard on vegito’s banner. Ended up rainbowing multiple units from it, no new vegito LR though. Oh well, saving coins for him or when STR Cooler returns. How did the banners treat you?
I can't believe you were more surprised that A1 pictures and Mappa animated the Granblue show, than that the first season was composed by Nobuo "suck my dick, i made One Winged Angel" Uematsu.
I played a lot of Unison League with my girlfriend for about 3 years now, on and off of course, and I met a lot of friends in a guild and had a lot of warm adventures with them. There’s pay to win elements, but honestly none of the progressing stuff ever mattered. It really is the memories you make with people. If I miss a person I know exclusively by their avatar at times, that’s a big feeling.
@@mr.miscellaneous1079 like any good meme tutorials, blender is a fully-fledged free 3d animation software, and a lot of people have been trying it out recently! I'd watch a beginners tutorial if you're really interested, but I imagined yakko downloaded the character model from online, rigged a puppet of it, and then animated it.
I play a metric ton of Epic Seven and have since global launch(and am baby whale/adult dolphin level spender) and I fully agree with everything here. Microtransactions are pretty predatory and the majority of games are almost downright evil with it. I spend because its what I enjoy and while it may not be the smartest thing, as long as I know my limits it's ok, because I'm getting the enjoyment that I wanted from it. Would I recommend at all what i do? Hell nah, stay f2p as much as ever possible. Great video as usual yakko
For me, I’ve always been a fan of the “fate” series. So when I heard of fate GO, I was hooked. Fate in my opinion has a pretty good FTP option and then if you pay money, you can sometimes get 5 stars. With certain times in the year it’s guaranteed. With there also being a Japanese server that is 2 years ahead I always know that the game will have a long life and that I know what to look forward to. (Just so you have context I’ve been playing fate since the second month of the global release)
I love the Fate universe and Fate GO was one of my go to games when it released on Global, but I quit after realizing the endless cycle of "Grind for 7 days straight to finish the event" then casually grind dailies until another even releases, was really bad for my mental health. (Also I realized I'm not a fan of time gated game changing content. I play Grand Chase: Dimensional Chaser now, both because I like its gameplay model more (events only give cosmetics and materials, and you're able to get everything in the game given putting in a little time every day or so) and because I played the original grand chase
F/GO has so little impact on the Fate universe it's genuinely hilarious, If you're into fate universe, go read Fate/Strange Fake or El melloi for more worldbuilding, or be one of the three people that actually watched Kara No Kyoukai. Mind you all of these have Fate/Zero vibes, so no fanservice or waifubait
The thing i like about FGO is that the free units from the fp gacha are not just some trash units but can actually be really useful, unlike some gacha games like Dokkan where anything that's not an ssr is just totally useless. Hell even a huge portion of the ssr cards are just straight up trash.
Also it doesn't really matter to me that it has little impact on the Fate universe, i actually really enjoyed the story chapters, even some events like the one going on right now have pretty decent stories and characters. As a VN FGO is pretty solid i'd say
I was waiting for him to mention Fire Emblem Heroes since it has enough interesting gameplay to stand its ground as a "game" and isn't grindy at all, and then I got to the feh pass segment. Not even mad because it's true
tl dr, gacha games sucks, friends are the only thing that made people keep playing these games. if you're playing gacha games and feel like your wasting time, well it's because you are wasting your time. and when you feel fomo. ask yourself, "what am i missing out?", your missing out on nothing pls if you're addicted to gacha games and you paid on those games. pls quit the faster you quit the better your life will be. ask yourself "what benefit will i get if i quit these gacha games?" for me as an example: more time, no preassure from limited predatory events/banner, and so much more that you can't think as of yet. addiction is addiction, pls love yourself and quit these predatory games.
I feel like MTG Arena does a good job with making the game playable without paying money. Just completing daily quests for the first few days of playing gets you a crap ton of theme decks, some of which being very strong if modified slightly. Also, wildcards can be used to craft any card of the same rarity from any set (except special event exclusives.) I was able to rack up mythic wildcards just from playing for 2 hours a week and enjoy what I did. But MTG is a whole nother type of gambling that has its share of addicts. Collecting the real cards is insanely expensive, especially ones that are good in game.
I played union cross when it first came out and was part of a group called Kaiju. It was probably the best time I've played a mobile game. It was competitive and our team ranked first or at least top 10 consistently and even came up with a raid boss method where even lower level members could lux farm. We even had a person from an opposing team join ours to "infiltrate" and shared our method and optimized it and overtook us. It was the best experience and no other game has come close to that for me. I eventually quit because of the micro transactions and it was getting too much and eventually the original people on my team all left so it wasn't the same and P2W got so unbalanced. I miss it...
The point about gacha games ending at the end of this video hits a lot harder with Dragalia's EOS being announced today. Especially since I got into it because of this video. God, i'm still sad.
Gachas are exactly why I’ve almost quit Puzzle And Dragons. Such a fun game, but you need rare monsters in order to be good. In order for the rare monsters, you need to wait until the events that have them such as Godfest. In order for that, you need 5-10 magic stones to pull. There’s a monster where matching some heal orbs just deals damage to the monster anyway! When you don’t have the rare monsters everyone else has and refuse to spend money (like me) everything you can do is either too easy, too hard, or you have to wait for fun events. And even then once you’re finished, it’s like “now what?” They’re quite generous, but only in anniversaries, events, or if you log in for enough days. Another thing is that there’s no way for the game to recommend a team, or make one for you. You have to try to make one, or ask people on social media.
It’s why I’m having so much more fun playing Pokemon Shuffle, you unlock Pokemon as you go, and you’re not forced to pay money. Also, they force you to give you a break when you run out of stamina, so they aren’t trying to exploit you. The Pokemon are likable because you fight with them and have appeal. Puzzle and Dragons doesn’t have this, only some monsters have stories. Also, most “monsters” are just girls. The only good thing I’d say is you’re not forced to “grind” because they give you lots of EXP monsters.
19:12 And thus was my first heartbreak when I learned M.O.E was shut down 4 months after deciding to get it again after getting a new phone..... Gatcha games are brutal not only in-game but in real life too :
@@l_kaida I have had that recommended to me a few times. And since the devs showed actual gameplay in their ads, it looks pretty good. Sadly girls frontline just took up second gacha game slot in my day so yea. I'm mostly playing because gf2 is coming this year and I heard story is good.
Good lord gacha games are definitely not for me. It's exactly many of the practices mentioned in this video that are mentioned in the video that I despise in video games nowadays.
I tried to get into Gacha games back in the day, but hated the monetisation of each and everyone I tried, then at the start of this year I tried Blue Archive. So I can say that I hate Gacha games but love Blue Archive.
Skylanders was one of the most innovative gachas ever. It's got the basics: - Gambling(stores restocking) with commons, rares, xtra rares and really xtra rare (that goddam drill-doser was nonexistent) - "wiafus" and "hosbundos" - Starter units that were always kinda shit encouraging you to get more - Restricting some units to specific s̶e̶r̶v̶e̶r̶s stores - Limited time units (pumpkin eyebrawl) - lazy reskins of units you already have (look, ninjini BUt ReD) - Gradual powercreep (they'd update every character almost every game with better skills) - New random mechanics that hardly make sense (Skylanders: frankenstein's monstrosity-force) - Crossover characters when the franchise, and genre, is starting to rot in stagnation and oversaturation - Goes under when a new story arc was about to begin BUT it also has: - Physical figures you can roleplay with - Kickstarted a new genre with the fastest halve life i've seen in anything - Every character has a lazy eye - your siblings can break them with ease - They can sunbleach sometimes - you can grill the ones you hate I think I've realized where the source of my gambling addiction came from
This video is brilliant. You've done your research, actually played the games and did an AMAZING job of showing people both the positives and negatives of GACHA Games. I feel like as long as you know what you're signing up for when you get into these types of games (and if you do go down the rabbit hole of paying for content), as long as you do so responsibly you can have a lot of fun with them and that they do have a place ( if done well) in the gaming community as it shifts to this micro-transaction style of content. Play GACHA Responsibly people.
Microtransactions do in fact make them bad games, they are intentionally made worse so you pay to make it better. There is no such thing as a good faith microtransaction, they were created specifically to siphon money from the vulnerable.
I'm here from the Dragalia Lost subReddit. I love DL. I love hearing people speak fondly about it. I've been fortunate enough to only spend (a truly irresponsible amount of) time on it. I actually quit Marvel Contest of Champions over a year ago because I was playing it so much that it was negatively impacting my job and marriage. Now my wife and I play Dragalia together and we're mostly reasonable about it. I liked this vid. New sub acquired! (Sorry, I'm just a 3 star. I'm not even meta. You should probably roll again. )
I'm a middle aged housewife who runs a Brave Nine guild, am completely free to play, and am currently ranked Grandmaster in one of the game modes. I would've told you that mobile games are silly, until I founded a hilarious and fun guild, realized just how ridiculous the gameplay depth was, and found myself actually theorycrafting about teams in my idle time. This is the first of your videos I've ever seen (thanks, algorithm!), and I really appreciate the humorous and sobering look you've taken. If Brave Nine closed down tomorrow, I'd miss playing it terribly, but I'd still have my discord and the friends I've made. Great video.
"If a gacha game shuts down, there is no remnant of progress" I felt that with heavenstrike rivals 2, which was the first gacha game I really got invested in. I only played the game for like 4-5 months, but about a year ago, I wanted to check in on it again, just to see how the game has evolved after all this time, and maybe spend a few weeks trying it out again, only to find out that the game no longer has active servers. That genuinely made me a little sad, the game was really fun, and its weird to me that, unlike most other games I like and have liked, there is no way for anyone to experience it ever again.
Love the vid man! Glad to know I wasn't the only one caught by Kingdom Hearts Unchained clutches. Dropped so much money on that game while in highschool and I also did the same and applied to be in a guild in the vulpes union called Yujo No Kokoro. We actually made it to the top of the global lux leaderboard too. But the game just wasn't fun anymore. A medal that would carry me would be completely overshadowed the next week and that made keeps my up in my party hard too. I had to cut the game and my party off cold turkey too keep myself from coming back. Play Gatcha games responsibly kids. Oh also Dragalia Lost for the win baby!
Honestly, these kind of videos about gachas and gacha mentality is rare, so when I saw the one you made a year ago(which was also the first video I watched on this channel), it had me hoping you'd keep on making these. I've been playing gachas for years now, so the points you brought about reroll addiction, and the difficulty it takes to transition into gacha game that's not exactly new are definitely things I agree on, and things I've experienced before. The reroll one was a lot tamer on my end, but you know you've hit that point of addiction when rerolling starts feeling "fun" and frustrating at the same time. Overall, I think gachas are fun, but treat in game currency like you do with actual money and spend it carefully. Understand that it is still RNG, and most of all, make sure you playing for a purpose that only that game can provide. Lastly, a big thank you for calling out mobile game sponsors where the youtuber only shows trailer footage as gameplay, or tutorial gameplay as sample footage. It really feels half assed when all they do is that. If you're going to sponsor, do it right. I better see you being decently leveled, or else all it is is just another ad I ignore.
The problem with gacha games is how stressful and boring it becomes with time, it's not like you can sit on your couch the weekend and end a game, like prey or mirror's edge, gacha games NEVER ends, they just release a small story chapters and some characters with ridiculous high prices. In my case my gacha game was Honkai impact 3rd, and Boy, after 3 years playing it non stop (and nothing else) i spent around 2000 bucks. had fun? Yes, would do it again? NO. It's a dumb investment, since the characters and weapons you unlock becomes irrelevant after 3 patches. It's better to buy a Xbox X/ps5 and enjoy real games.
Total agreement. I now only play a maximum of one gacha at a time. It's been Azur Lane for over a year now and I haven't felt pressured to pay once. I still did but it's not the games fault that I need to marry every character. Yostar stayed pretty true to their free to play design in Arknight so I have high hopes for them in this sea of games that actively rob you.
After having lived long enough to make and lose and make new and lose even more friends irl, I'm very opposed to the idea of developing bonds with people I will probably never meet. Not that I think it's a bad thing, I'm just... Very hesitant, myself. But I would love to be convinced otherwise.
Genshin is the first and only gacha I play and it's nice because it doesn't give much incentive to pay and it actually encourages you to play very little. It gives you a big empty world full of goblins and slimes to kill so there's no reason to pay or care to maximize your characters because there's nothing to do with them.
i have a coherent reason why i hate those free to play games that filled with microtransaction to the brim: They halts Mobile Gaming potential. when you can play star wars kotor, GTA san andreas, Bully, on your phone, you know that they can handle PS2-wii class game WELL. imagine, if developers are incentified to make AAA experience on phone, imagine that. i'm sure phone nowadays can handle nintendo switch games, I'M SURE. can you imagine ? Zelda BOTW on your phone ? or heck, even skyrim or witcher 3 on the go. man. THE WASTED POTENTIAL MADE ME FURIOUS.
I refuse to play gachas for one reason. Once the revenue goes down a little bit, they get the axe, and good luck playing a server based game that has been shut off.
The only gacha game(s), or rather, games with gacha elements I've played is League of Legends and Overwatch. Otherwise, I avoid the genre like the absolute plague. The video already mentioned the common statements made on them about being cash grabs or not real games cause they're on your phone, and I share that sentiment 100% even after the video. But that's not why I think so negatively of them (well, the money part kind of). The reason why I hate them so much is because you have to invest your money or time to get a CHANCE at whatever you want. If it was you could grind for hours on end, or spend $10 to buy the specific OP waifu you want, then I would have so much less issue with it, since it's not making you gamble your time and or money for potentially no payout. But yeah, that's the main reason why I avoid those games and those gameplay elements.
I used to play tons of gacha in high school, but being out of it means I have the free time to play actual games. However, Its really hard deleting so much progress for the 2-3 I've actually invested in. That's why I play while I afk in league games.
4:37 *laughs in Arknights events* I did. I got something from the experience. Tanky enemies that hit range units are the ultimate evil and should be exterminated with all might. Forget the 3 star result, I want the fuckers down. Downing my whole squad to the point where every unit was on cooldown. Some of these ones were E2! How did you knock THEM out?! ...maybe I should've just used more than 2 casters. And...you know...learn to strategize. Still love the events.
I play Genshin, Super Mecha Champions, and Punishing: Gray Raven. I only play gacha's that are also fun to play, and I have a hard rule that I won't pay more money in any free game than I would have payed to buy it. So I've been able to have a pretty good time playing gachas without going broke. I still think it's shitty how games prey on people's psychology, but for people who are naturally resistant to advertising and addiction these games can be really fun
100% agree with Fire Emblem. I love a lot about the game, and I still play it, and they even made me dip into the FEH Pass for a single month, but I absolutely despise that they decided it was a good idea to lock quality of life features behind a paywall.

re: that bit at 5:29 about gachas being sustained by a few players who pay thousands - that checks out for sure. one of my college professors used to develop games for a few different studios in japan, and he worked on a now-defunct gacha game at one point. there was one, single player the devs all *knew by name* because he was spending so much money that he was the main person funding their game and paying their paychecks. he'd call support and they'd legitimately be like, oh shit, it's him, get him a direct line to the devs, because they wanted him specifically to be as happy with the game as possible.

@@Jovian12 well be prepared, blaze is coming soon and its hard to not whale for her (for me anyways)
@@kevinseraphin5456 you can even clear stages with only mayer and magallan

It can be best described with this meme:
When you accidentally spent all your SQ for “bait” banner
*SQ pack* : You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me.
This has to be one of the most depth comment that i see, which i agree on.
Every character has its own story..

"You're telling me gacha games are just anime waifu cash and grabs?"
Me: Yes, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
God, I remember forcing myself to grind feathers and horde orbs in FEH because I kept telling myself "Next month they'll add a character I like", "The _next_ banner will have an alt of a character I care about", _"Next month,_ FEH pass will sell a png of a character I actually want...!"
I lied to myself like that for 4 years, and this year, I finally overcame the sunk cost fallacy and uninstalled the game, and it's like a weight was lifted off my shoulders.
I played for a while, but I got so fed up with the ads I uninstalled after about a month of playing.

man, gotta say good video. you provide arguments from both sides which I can respect.

Eh, it's always like that during the beginning stages of a Gacha. They'll have to up the powercreep sooner or later. It's the sad truth.

You’re better off playing PSVita or 3DS games.
And I'm still mad about it
Not long after the whole fanfare as well with the first original magical girl debut for english server, the anime adaptation, and the next arc teaser
I'm still bitter about it
18:48 I think that point doesnt justify gatcha. Nintendo games like animal crossing get free updates and support through internet. they dont preventing users progression if they dont spent more $$$$$$ in the game.
I have only played for a long period of time two gachas, destiny child and fgo.
Destiny child i stoped playing bc i got tired of autoing quests while looking at bouncing anime tiddies, but i still play fgo every day, sure i know that the chances on fgo are some of the lowest on the gacha market but i still think it's one of the best ones out there bc
1. it actualy tries to be a game unlike many other gacha with story characthers and things you care about and not just some excuse for me to pay money
2. sure SSR characthers will most of the time be more efficient but almost all of the characthers in the game can be used for any type of activity no matter their rarity you just have to invest enough time and resources into them and finaly
3. the only thing you can buy is the currency wich you use to pefform pulls, not resources and you can directly buy a single characther, does this make it a pain getting your favourite servant, but it makes so the game never is direcly pay to win or pay to play.
out of all of the gachas i've played fgo gave me the best experience and it's still a pretty fun game, i may be a little inclined to like it bc i like the fate franchise but at least this game is way more forgiving than any other gachas
Hell the best two farming heroes are both 1*. In other gachas 1* are at best exp fodder.
Also, fgo doesnt have PVP, so that make it one of the best gacha games in the market
Just one "mistake" is you can buy a servant but for that you had to be a massive whale. The Unregistered Spirit Origin "Summoning the same 5★ Servant for the 6th time and beyond"
Which is super rare.
Everything else I agree. Specially like saint quatz only give you the SSR, but if you want to level it up and his skills you will need to farm. And farm a lot. No money will make the SSRs level up
I have been playing FGO for two years now, I have put some money and I won't say I made any friends to be worthy but I really enjoy the non PVP part of the game, the story/novel, and also the type of game where you play on your on and don't need to depend on anybody.
It's fun, but yeah their gacha is the most ungrateful. I thought other games like Honkai Impact had better gatcha system but their game didn't hook me in.

I spend because its what I enjoy and while it may not be the smartest thing, as long as I know my limits it's ok, because I'm getting the enjoyment that I wanted from it. Would I recommend at all what i do? Hell nah, stay f2p as much as ever possible. Great video as usual yakko
This was a fantastic video, great work.
"if you pay money, you can sometimes get 5 stars"
Like literally every gacha. Lol, how fucking deep are you people into this shit hole?
I was waiting for him to mention Fire Emblem Heroes since it has enough interesting gameplay to stand its ground as a "game" and isn't grindy at all, and then I got to the feh pass segment.
Not even mad because it's true
tl dr, gacha games sucks, friends are the only thing that made people keep playing these games.
if you're playing gacha games and feel like your wasting time, well it's because you are wasting your time.
and when you feel fomo. ask yourself, "what am i missing out?", your missing out on nothing
pls if you're addicted to gacha games and you paid on those games. pls quit the faster you quit the better your life will be.
ask yourself "what benefit will i get if i quit these gacha games?"
for me as an example: more time, no preassure from limited predatory events/banner, and so much more that you can't think as of yet.
addiction is addiction, pls love yourself and quit these predatory games.
Cry
I know that Bandori is definitely and Idol Gacha Game and I have spent money in it, but I love playing the rhythm game aspect too. It’s fun as hell.
Yakko, your video on gacha games has gotten me addicted to even more of them. Help.
i love fire emblem heroes but jesus christ feh pass is the worst thing i’ve seen in a while
Same, unless they come out with some crazy Resplendent hero that I absolutely love, I will continue to be a F2P player.
My dumbass has been fucking paying for it since the beginning. I NEED THE PNGS
@@ExMagz you don't.
@@Zorooooooooooooooooooooooooooo you don't understand quite how retarded I sm
And even then once you’re finished, it’s like “now what?”
They’re quite generous, but only in anniversaries, events, or if you log in for enough days.
Don’t worry, I hate battle passes in other games too
Yeah yeah good video but...
*Where's the source for the thumbnail gal?*
Destiny Child, the true degenerate's gacha game
her name is Mona btw
@@yakkocmn a true man of culture
The uncensored version of that game tho
19:12 And thus was my first heartbreak when I learned M.O.E was shut down 4 months after deciding to get it again after getting a new phone..... Gatcha games are brutal not only in-game but in real life too :
Arknight and Girls Frontline are few of the rare games where I enjoyed the story line and strategies behind the gacha features.
I learned from Mario kart tour surprisingly not cookie run
Try magicami
Girls frontline I enjoyed more than arknights tbh.
Try guardian tales, the game is actually amazing but sad no one in the west really knows about it
@@l_kaida I have had that recommended to me a few times.
Yakko : "I fear for my sanity"
Me as an Arknights player that literally use sanity as energy.
"First time?":v
Yeah I thought of the same thing.
Skylanders was one of the most innovative gachas ever. It's got the basics:
- Gambling(stores restocking) with commons, rares, xtra rares and really xtra rare (that goddam drill-doser was nonexistent)
- "wiafus" and "hosbundos"
- Starter units that were always kinda shit encouraging you to get more
- Restricting some units to specific s̶e̶r̶v̶e̶r̶s stores
- Limited time units (pumpkin eyebrawl)
- lazy reskins of units you already have (look, ninjini BUt ReD)
- Gradual powercreep (they'd update every character almost every game with better skills)
- New random mechanics that hardly make sense (Skylanders: frankenstein's monstrosity-force)
- Crossover characters when the franchise, and genre, is starting to rot in stagnation and oversaturation
- Goes under when a new story arc was about to begin
BUT it also has:
- Physical figures you can roleplay with
- Kickstarted a new genre with the fastest halve life i've seen in anything
- Every character has a lazy eye
- your siblings can break them with ease
- They can sunbleach sometimes
- you can grill the ones you hate
I think I've realized where the source of my gambling addiction came from
The Feh Pass or what some players call it the "Eh, pass."
Fuck that, don't settle for microtransaction crap.
You gave FGO 15 seconds of footage, but you did so with Heracles and Edmond. Take my Like and appreciation
"$1170 on LoL" he shows, whilst I chuckle in despair at the somehow $3010 I've somehow spent without realizing it.
Nearly choked on my laugh when you said "Taking the world by storm deez nuts!" haha
I clicked this video while event farming in FGO
Sadly same, and there's two good events in both servers!
Same.
At least managed to get Chokita
Ryouma or Hokusai?
Same. :))) My Summer Musashi says Hi!
...same, i feel like this is a problem
I stopped playing Dragalia for like 2 months and instantly felt like i had fallen too far behind to really come back
The problem with gacha games is how stressful and boring it becomes with time, it's not like you can sit on your couch the weekend and end a game, like prey or mirror's edge, gacha games NEVER ends, they just release a small story chapters and some characters with ridiculous high prices.
What are you talking about King?
Genshin is the first and only gacha I play and it's nice because it doesn't give much incentive to pay and it actually encourages you to play very little. It gives you a big empty world full of goblins and slimes to kill so there's no reason to pay or care to maximize your characters because there's nothing to do with them.
i have a coherent reason why i hate those free to play games that filled with microtransaction to the brim:
They halts Mobile Gaming potential. when you can play star wars kotor, GTA san andreas, Bully, on your phone, you know that they can handle PS2-wii class game WELL. imagine, if developers are incentified to make AAA experience on phone, imagine that. i'm sure phone nowadays can handle nintendo switch games, I'M SURE. can you imagine ?
Really can't wait until Fire Agito comes out so the water Spirals can be released and the king Xander can return
I myself awaits the arrival of Lily's Mana Spiral upgrade
I used to play tons of gacha in high school, but being out of it means I have the free time to play actual games. However, Its really hard deleting so much progress for the 2-3 I've actually invested in. That's why I play while I afk in league games.
Excellent video! Loved every minute of it. And glad you like Dragalia, it's my favourite too 💕
4:50 me all the time in cookie run, even in my own guild i get bullied
Thanks Genshin Impact for putting this in my recommended
