  • We had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Max Grossman to discuss the border ( la Frontera) between art, art history, architecture, and philosophy.
Dr. Max Grossman is a specialist of medieval and Renaissance architecture and urbanism in Italy. He conducted research in the history of art in Tuscany for seven years before completing his Ph.D. at Columbia University.
He is currently Associate Professor of Art History at The University of Texas at El Paso and Director of its study abroad program in Rome. His most recent book is a co-edited volume on the art and architecture of the Roman feudal nobility in the Renaissance: Building Family Identity: The Orsini Castle of Bracciano from Fiefdom to Duchy (1470-1698). (pub. 2019)
Since arriving in El Paso in 2009, Dr. Grossman has developed a second field of interest: the architecture and history of the West Texas region from the Native American period through World War II. He has recently submitted a book for publication called El Paso Architecture, and his edited volume on the Mescalero Apaches of El Paso and the Borderlands region will come out in 2024. He serves on the Board of Directors of Preservation Texas, the leading preservationist organization in Texas, and as Vice-Chair of The Trost Society in El Paso, whose mission is to formulate and implement strategies for protecting the architectural heritage of El Paso while promoting the economic development of the historic districts of both the city and county.

Beauty necessarily requires the acknowledgement of depth within that object of beauty, which in turn, lends value to our subjective experience of beauty. (Make beauty somewhat infinite since all experience are infinitely different from one another. This is probably why we can't separate beauty from essence of beauty. As an Artist, one needs this attribute; the ability to spot the depth, and then to bring it out (expression).

Creativity is not always about intimating the beauty that suits us. Not all beauty is consonant. There is beauty in dissonance . Composer Arnold Shoenberg demonstrated this with the principle of atonality in his work. The artist must be a creator to be sure, but the duty is not to find the beauty , it's to find the truth..There is beauty in all truth... not all truth is consonant.
