Thanks for the video. Lots of great tips that can be used for other projects including the ice scoop kit as well.
I just made a couple of these as gifts, but I have to say I didn’t get any drill size for the insert to screw in the handle nor did I receive an Allen wrench in my kits. Didn’t know there were suppose to be so I never questioned it. However I did like your video. Gave me a few ideas on how to approach the next ones I make. Thanks for your input. Very much appreciated. By the way I did have the other type of insert that requires a special tool to install but later found out all I need is a 5/16 x20 bolt and a wrench
Thank you!. Glad you enjoyed that and found a way for installing the treaded inserts for the handles. Product instruction are sometimes lacking. I've run into that! 👍
Just a quick note your wood will catch fire long before you loose the temper of the carbide tips. Carbide tool steel is heated to approximately 950 to 1150 degrees to temper. Dry wood catches fire at about 300 to 580 degrees.
Another great design! Laughed out loud on the banjo! Thanks!
Thanks Scott!
VERY, VERY NICE. Thanks
Thank you!
HI Gary, enjoyed the video, nice job. Where did you get the chuck with the head stock mount.? Thanks.
Thanks! I got that at PSI (PennStateInd.com).
@@GaryLundgrenCrafts Thanks.
Why not just put the threaded insert into the handle before you turn it?
Thank you! Excellent question! I did try that with the first few of these that I made. I ran into a couple problems with that. This may be confusing, but I’ll try.
1. I didn’t want to glue the threaded inserts in place until I was ready for final assembly so I could align the wood grains in a most appealing orientation. I wanted the most appealing part of the wood grain to be along the top edge of the handle. On each hardware piece the threads were not always exactly started and aligned as the next. So, it needed to be fitted on each piece. To use the insert with a mandrel to match would not exactly align. So, without gluing in the insert, the insert is a slightly loose fit, yet tight enough for the glue to hold.
2. With using the insert with a mandrel and being a slightly loose fit meant it could slip during the turning process due to the lateral pressure of the lathe chisel against the spinning piece. That would enlarge the hole more than wanted and the glue would not adequately make up for it. I made the hole in the handle to fit the insert into a slightly larger than one would normally tap to because I found that tapping that, as large as you may a metal hole, the hardwood handle would split on me all the time. So, I drilled a slightly larger hole for the insert to avoid that splitting, and the epoxy filled in perfectly and gave it enough strength to hold under daily use.
After ruining a couple $10 to $20 handle blanks, I had to find a better way, as I did above.
Again, excellent question! Questions like this help us all to learn. And this may not be the only answer. As they say “there’s always more ways than one to solve an issue.” I’m always happy to listen to suggestions, and more times than not, these comments improve my skills too.
Thank you!
@@GaryLundgrenCrafts Sure that part about lining up the grain makes sense I didn't think of that but when you spend $20 on a blank you want the best grain visible. I get what your saying about the hole and getting loose when you turn, the first two I did I had some issues with the insert. I wonder if a guy could turn a tenon and drill a longer hole so you could grip that end in a chuck and then cut off the extra tenon later?
I’m interested in purchasing an ice cream scoop and pizza cutter with matching handles. Do you have a webpage or do you sell on another site?
