I consider myself a good artist but this tutorial completely inspires me to take things to the next level. I did use to do underpainting but I had forgotten how subtle and unique it gives the painting. I was distracted by modern methods, became lazy as wanted to speed up my work and listened to people saying just use acrylics in layers and glazing techniques. This takes me back to college and Uni days...P.S. Do you start on more than one canvas at a time as you allow drying times?. Cheers.
It's awesome that my video is such a source of inspiration for you. Layering is really meaningful, creating a complex artwork in terms of both quality and aesthetics. To answer your question, absolutely, I usually have several paintings at different stages of development. I revisit them based on my current mood and schedule.
Thanks for the tutorial. Your video is very interesting, inspiring and intimidating. Could you please tell how many weeks did it take in total (start to finish) for just this one painting? Also, what are the dimensions of this painting? I'm interested in attempting an oil painting using your techniques. Again, thank you very much in advance for the information.
Honestly, I'm not sure how long it took me to finish this painting, but it was a few weeks! I was working on other paintings as well. The painting is 40 x 50 cm, and I always paint things in their actual size.
This here is real intricate, explaining it in just a couple of sentences ain't gonna cut it. Grisaille, it shows itself through layers too. With them oil colors being see-through, grisaille tones down the color intensity, and once it's dried, you can gradually amp up the color in the next layers. If you're wondering if you can do it without grisaille, the answer's yes. But if you're going at it with the direct painting technique, the colors ain't building up through layers and see-through stuff. Plus, it messes with how long the painting lasts, the texture, and all that. Like I'm saying, it's a tough one to explain in a few sentences. The best answers, you'll find 'em in my books :)
The amount of steps to paint like this is maddening.
Standard procedure 😅🙂
I have never looked at anything up close before..This is truly inspiring
Happy to hear !!
Seres li seres !
Nice. But where is the shot of the ENTIRE completed painting? We only saw closeups.
Please for full image check my website 😉

How would you approach painting a horse? The classical paintings of fine horses are so cool.
What color should horse have ? Brown, white?
@@mateart thanks for the reply! A bay, chestnut horse, or maybe palomino? They’re so pretty.
Hi thanks for taking the time to do this. I love the technique. I’m going to see how I can use this in my endeavors. Thanks, Candi Kloverstrom.
Happy to help !!💗
Exquisite, perfection and composition. A very nice Rebatment composition that Rembrandt and Vermeer would admire👏👍😃

Never heard before about the onion trick, i will test it in my next painting. Does it help in reducing the embus?
What does ebus mean?
@@mateart it is a french word describing when an unwanted mate zone appear in a painting. I Hope you understand what i try to say.
I dont understand the point on using a grisaille. If you paint over it you cant see it anymore. So why isnt it a waste of color?

Why..when…how your brush works on the canvas is simply fantastic! Can you tell me what you use to wash your brush in between?
Just turpentine for applying brushes and during blending I"m cleaning soft sable brushes with dry cloth.
Very nice 🎉 work

everything is a little too over-rendered .. old masters were way more abstract in mark making.
Very nice
