So finally we are sharing with you our new pet macaw Tommy. Tommy is a two year old military macaw and unlike Shelby our blue and gold macaw Tommy is a rescue macaw. In this video we explain how we came to buy a new macaw, baby macaw vs rescue macaw, adopt over shop, the dangers of supporting macaw breeders in the UK, and how we nearly made a huge mistake before getting Tommy.
The most important thing we want you to take from this story time video is that if possible, please always consider adopting a pet macaw, over buying a baby macaw from a breeder. Macaws are constantly being trafficked into the UK to meet the high demands of baby birds, and yet already there are a huge number of parrots in rescue centres or living in appalling conditions who need a good home. When looking for a pet parrot consider all options before making your decision and don't listen to the horror stories that come with rescue parrots.
Pet birds are very difficult pets to own, so as always never buy a pet parrot on a whim and do your research!
All new birds should be tested for diseases, at a bare minimum the following four diseases: PBFD, polyomavirus, chlamydia and bornavirus, before being allowed near any other pet birds in the home. One thing people might think about doing if they are considering a new bird is see if there is a rescue in your area that needs foster homes. I am part of one that is always needing more foster homes. You get a chance to get to know different birds, and you usually get first chance to adopt if you fall in love. (We have three we got that way.)
Rescues also often need volunteers to clean cages, handle birds, and help with meet and greet events (when Covid allows again) and things like that, which are also good ways to be around different kinds of birds and to learn more about them. We also have toy making parties. We don’t free fly any of the rescue birds, but we do bring them to get-togethers sometimes when we are doing toy parties, or ‘spa days’ where we have someone who can do nail and beak trims come to one of our homes and take care of all of the foster birds.
We got into the rescue by adopting a Goffins Cockatoo, and now have a Catalina Macaw and an African Grey from the rescue, and my Mom who lives with us now has a pair of Parakeets too.
The beautiful Hyacinth Macaw we have came to us through the rescue in a roundabout way, too. My husband and I were giving a presentation at a town a couple of hundred miles from home (our rescue covers the whole state of Oregon in the United States) and the daughter of the owner of Xochi, the Hyacinth, was there and saw us. Her mom was getting too old to care for Xochi, and her husband, who had been Xochi's main person, had recently died. The owner called us and talked to my husband, but wasn’t ready to give her up yet.
Then a year later, out of the blue, she called and asked if we still wanted her. She invited us to come stay for the weekend to see if Xochi liked us, so we did. We ended up coming back home with a Hyacinth Macaw, my husband’s dream bird since he was a little kid, and one we could never afford, just given to us because we worked with a rescue and she knew we would take good care of her.
Rescues definitely may be more work in the long run but the rewards of their love and gratitude would be even sweeter.🍬🍫🍬 Welcome to your new family member!🦜🦜🦜 Thank you for sharing your home and your story with us!🥰🥰🥰

Seeing that Moluccan cockatoo made me tear up. I miss mine so much. She was beautiful and had her as a baby until she was a year old. One day she got sick and was at the bottom of the cage. We rushed her down to the exotic bird hospital in the city and she was there all weekend getting worse and worse. Eventually she was gone. It was like losing a child (my first bird and it was before having kids and actually was pregnant with my first son when she passed). I just found your channel and what you’re doing is amazing!
I'm so happy for Tommy - he's found a loving home (well you found him 😊) and I can tell he's very happy with you all! He and your family seem to be the perfect match!
Thanks for being so honest! I only have small birds (two budgies and a green cheek conure), and we adopted our conure from a family that had listed him for rehoming on Craigslist. They were very nice people, but they didn't have time to spend with him or to tame/train him. When we went to pick him up, they had heavily scented candles burning! At first our conure wheezed pretty badly after flying... and the artificial candle scent (from his previous home) took a while to wear off him and his cage. Luckily, the wheezing went away after he started breathing cleaner air, getting regular exercise and a healthier diet! He's tame now, very happy, and such a part of our family... and he and our budgies get along very well!
When we decided to adopt him, we were pretty nervous about what we might be getting ourselves into, but we knew we'd commit no matter what... but he turned out to be the perfect fit for our family, and consider him to be a blessing. The rehoming fee cost about as much as buying one new from a breeder or pet shop (the most I've ever spent on aquiring a pet), but it is the best money we ever spent and don't regret it one bit, and it feels good to know that he's now living a happier & healthier life now.
Every once in a while, out of curiosity I browse Craigslist and other ads, and often see birds that are needing to be rehomed, usually from less than ideal conditions. 😪 I think that because of the high maintenance & special care required to own a bird, they are the pet that is most likely to be neglected or rehomed.
I agree that anyone thinking about getting a bird, should first consider adopting one, because there are sooo many birds (big & small) in need of adoption & rescue!

@@cindystory5140 I love Paul and his whole family and flock. He did what was right for him and like I said, Shelby is a breeder bird so I’m in no position to judge anyone who has done the same. Paul gives back to macaws tenfold in other ways and I’m sure one day he will consider adopting 😜
Personally, i agree with adopt over shop, however it needs to be a responsible adopt. Not all birds you could adopt are right for you for whatever reason. But that doesn’t necessarily mean a bird isnt for you. ALWAYS visit the birds you wish to take on, learn the birds personality. Minimise the risk of possibly rehoming the bird again as much as possible. If your going to a breeder, make sure they are reputable, who are doing it for the sake of the bird rather than for a quick buck.

I agree with that but also if your going to give up after a few tricky behavioral issues you shouldn’t be getting a big bird like a Macaw, its takes the kind of person that is willing to put in the training and hours of patience with the bird to build that relationship. I think that the part where new bird owners go wrong is that they don’t do enough research on what owning a bird looks like.

I originally was going to rescue a bird, but in the end I purchased my bird from a parrot society show in Stafford a week ago and I do wish at the end of the day I had rescued because I know there are so many that need it. I asked a lot of my friends and there friends for good places to rescue but none of the rescues they pointed me to had anything that I could reasonably care for 😭 as much as I would have loved to have rescued one I’m sure I will get another chance some day in the future 😊
I‘ve seen much too much sad sights in the last few years, things that makes you cry or angry. Sometimes I can‘t understand our own human species. How on earth can people be so cruel to animals?! Love you guys for giving a home to little Tommy ❤️ He‘ll be having a bright future from now on ☀️

The only thing I disagree with is that buffon's macaws are not the 2nd largest 😁 greenwing macaws are. Buffon's would be the third largest I believe. I hope you enjoy your new flock member and that Shelby is happy with the addition 😊

I am glad you changed your attitude towards rescue birds. I myself am living with a rescue cockatoo, and I although I was also looking into getting one from a shop, I quickly learned about the horrors. I never once thought of all the possible issues with a rescue bird. I just knew I had to save one. He's been with me for eight years now, and he is not going anywhere anymore. I can't stop thinking about the Moluccan cockatoo in that tiny cage with that awful person. Can't you report him? Those birds are going to meet a terrtible end.

😢😢😢🤬🤬🤬 Shame on him. I hope you turned him in to authorities. That is awful!!! I'm so happy you have him. I'm so grateful to you and ppl like you. It's all animals exotic and otherwise. We should be so grateful to live with all of these amazing creatures amongst us. Yet I feel like our species (humans) yep, we are the problem I said it, the first thing we think is "I want it" and then we take it and bring it home instead of just enjoying it in it's natural habitat and then at some point need to be rescued because we see $$$. Then breading begins, It breaks my heart. I wish we could treat animals of all kind better. They are not possessions. They are living, breathing, beings. ❤

Please watch the UA-cam channel Bird Tricks from the US. Jamie workes with a sanctuary and does "project" birds to rehabilitate them. She also has her own flock.
Yes we enjoy watching Bird Tricks. We used their training techniques to get Shelby free flying. I don’t know how I’d be able to rescue the cockatoo to be honest, without breaking the law 🥲

hey guys, did you ever consider recording your flight training of tommy? I have a 2 year old black cockatoo rescue who so badly wants to freefly and has been locked in a cage most of his life. I'd love to learn from what you did.
Oh we certainly will be recording the whole free flight journey! I don’t know how to show the videos yet, but we will definitely be keeping a record of his progress. Good luck with flying your cockatoo I’m sure you will get there! What an amazing bird to see in flight, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it myself so I can’t imagine how rewarding it will be when the day arrives!

He is very beautiful and he was a bit sad when I got him because he had an undiagnosed broken thigh bone and that, combined with being sedentary and clipped, meant he got really bullied by the other cockatoo he was with. He is a little (lot) bird phobic and he loves feeling safe around us humans. We have 3 quakers flying around the house, they are tiny compared to him and he is just terrified of them. I too had to get him onto a good diet, good baths to clear out his nose (incidentally, that is the bird dust that comes off their feathers when they groom which they wash out and if they dont have access to bathing or a mate to groom with, it builds in their baby nares), time in the sun, basic training, getting him to stretch and flap his wings, but he wasnt as keen at first. Now that he is starting to feel really good, he is so ready to move on! Thank you for sharing your vid on Tommy - it is timely for me. I do agree with you. The more I care for large birds, the more I wonder if it is fair for us to keep them in our very constricted environments. The enrichment can only go so far and keeping them in cages/clipped is the same as cutting off a human's arms. They cant even keep their balance with clipped wings so are reluctant to move. Its pretty unethical and I am pretty sure breeding/demand would halve if clipping was made illegal, just like docking dog tails in certain breeds. Our flock of free flighted quakers always come home to roost in the evenings but that is quakers - they are parrots that build nests and become very attached to them. They are all boys too (dont interfere with Australia's incredible parrot wildlife) but it hasnt stopped them from being really affectionate with us and it brings me joy to see them so happy. ! I need a little guidance. I’ve been thinking about getting a bird. I’ve been around and handled cockatiels and an Amazon parrot. I’ve been offered a 15 year old Military Macaw for free. The gentleman has cancer and is trying to rehome his bird. He is the second owner and had the bird for 8 years. He’s only ever lived outside. I visited the bird today. He will step up on the owners arm and go back to his cage. He will not allow petting at all. I was able to touch the bottom of his foot while he was inside his cage, and he did not strike at me. He gets time outside the cage and does not fly at all. He’s content on the back porch just hanging out on top of his cage. If I bring him home, he will be inside, in our family room with us and our 3 dogs. My question is, will be become more tame with work and interaction? He is also very very loud. Will that quite down when he gets more attention? Thanks so much for the help!

Baby macaws grow up..there no different we couldn’t find a rescue, still can’t, I’m told there’s lots of birds needing rescue, I can’t find one, and I’ve been looking 4 years now…now ppl need to understand a rescue is also often as expensive because ppl getting into a bad situation they’re still valuable birds ppl don’t want to just give one away, but I’ve been looking for a clipped cage bound bird to train to free fly…as I have for others in the past…I’m going to start looking in the uk this summer..that’s so sad 3rd home, when he settles the screaming will calm down..he’s been trough so much for one so young..he landed on his feet with you..there needs to be laws for cage birds, something ppl would be very surprised there are none…we will change that, or try ..the problem with bringing in laws are battery chickens, ikr what in the world does better chickens have to do with pet birds, well I’ve already looked into laws and was told by more than one person in the know in this area, if laws are brought in, The better chicken industry would have to follow suite and let’s face it that’s not going to happen, the other route I’ve been looking into is hook bill birds, which parrots are but chickens are not, we’re working on it for Ireland, if we make any head way We will let ppl know…there’s a mountain of reading to do…but I’ll keep at it. As I have been for two years now….because this can’t carry on as is…
He contact calling you for lack of attention. He’s gorgeous! Well, you need to be cautious in 1-1.5 years that’s when Shelby is able to produce a clutch with Tommy if it’s meant to be.
Rescuing any animal is great and a noble thing to do but I kind of feel buying a bird off of someone who no longer has time for it isn’t rescuing a bird it’s fuelling the reselling trade 🤷🏼♂️ there’s no right or wrong as long as the bird goes to a good home I suppose
Yes I can see your point of view. At least taking on a bird that’s had an awful life gives it a second chance whereas going to a breeder instigates the supply and demand chain, increasing the demand and therefore the production of them.
Rehoming fees aren't necessarily a bad thing. A person is more likely to put more conscious thought into adopting an animal that they've had to spend a good amount of money on, so it sorta helps ensure that the animal is going to a better home, rather than any number of people who might impulsively inquire about a "free pet." I don't think most people who rehome their pet, are going to think about starting to go into business "reselling" them anyway.
@@tessa7413 no your right people aren’t going into the business of reselling but when the bird is finally too much for them they know they can just sell the bird for not much less than they paid for it. If the option to resell your parrot wasn’t there and they had to give it to a registered trust or an organisation that throughly home checked people wouldn’t be so quick to buy a bird in the first place. Yes your giving a bird a second chance but you could also give a baby a great life from the start. There’s no real right or wrong in my opinion, but a bird is being bought from someone either way and that is not a rescue (again in my opinion)

It probably would be better if there were policies set in place that required individuals to surrender to a reputable rescue organization if they couldn't care for them anymore, and this would e something they'd have to agree to when buying the bird in the first place. That would probably make people more deeply consider their willingness to commit for the long haul.... but then, I imagine it probably wouldn't keep the worst of people from selling them black market, or worse - they might just keep on neglecting the bird.

I’ve always been quite open about the fact I should never have gone to a breeder. I am also extremely open about how awful that was as a decision. That’s why my second macaw was a rescue. I always try to encourage others to rescue or adopt over going to a breeder or a pet shop. I am working closely with the World Parrot Trust, and The Macaw Recovery Network to raise money for wild macaw populations and support the efforts to increase endangered parrot species. I’m glad to have you along again but I have been working hard on my mistakes for well over a year
This doesn't look like a rescue. This looks like you brought home a bird from an illegal bird trader! What did you pay for Tommy?
So this is something we did consider however they don’t tend to work from their own homes and he had children there. That doesn’t mean it definitely wasn’t a trader though. We paid about the same amount a baby military would cost
