    I personally think the best way to go about it is the manga, the 90's anime and then crystal, because going to crystal to the 90's is whiplash.

    I’m 71 years old and that might seem a little weird, but I started watching Sailor Moon about a month ago. I really liked the studio Ghibli anime movies, and this caught my eye. Although they are all somewhat juvenile, Sailer Moon is even more so. With that being said, I always prefer to watch things made in the order they were made.

    I watched Sailor Moon Crystal when it came out out in 2014 and rewatched it twice, so safe to say I really liked it. I watched about 30 episodes of 90's Sailor Moon after I finished Crystal and it felt like it was too much of nothing, too little substance. I'll give it another try and see if I like it now.

      I think that’s a fair criticism of the 90s anime especially if you’re not viewing it with nostalgic lens, if you do plan to give it another shot maybe look up all the “canon” episodes so you can skip over all the filler!

    Dang, as a 90s child, growing up watching Sailor Moon on tv. I forgot the name of the network I watched it on in early 90s before Toonami but I've been lied to all my life :O Back then up to early 2000s, I didn't know anime had illustrated forms called manga. I didn't learn what that was until around 2002. Thanks for the vid. I came here with a negative perspective that I wasn't going to learn more than what I already knew and believed. I don't think what you said was opinionated as there was a fact behind it. I mean under the condition that we'd want to be close to the source material and I do so I found this helpful. I'm currently in the process of re-watching the series. I am thinking of watching the 90s anime along with Crystal. I hope that there is a way to read the manga online for free like I did with reading Akira.

    As someone in their early 20s who never grew up in the 90s, I literally watched every Version of Sailor Moon, Original Dub by Dic/Cloverway, The Remastered Dub by Viz, and the Reboot Dub by Viz also, plus every Dub of every one of the movies. I watched the Original Dub, then moved on to the Remastered Dub then the Reboot, I enjoyed it since anime runs in me, the Live Action one I’ll probably watch this year in 2023 with that ones 20th Anniversary, hope Sailor Moon enjoyed 30 years in 2022 last year. I'm currently making my way through the 1st season of the Viz Media dub of the 90's anime on Hulu. I went into it thinking "lol why not" and while it does make me feel really weird at times (can you say Saturn's transformation), but it actually has some really heartfelt moments. It makes you feel for characters you'd expect to hate! Is it campy? Yes. Does it get strangely suggestive with its mid-teenaged cast? Absolutely. But if you can look past all that, you'll find a genuinely entertaining anime with fun, relatable characters.

    • @okyogirl8395
      @okyogirl8395  2 роки тому +2

      I totally agree with you! But I will say the dub on Hulu is very new and I’ve only seen a few episodes of it and it definitely doesn’t have the awful 90s camp to it that was charming in the first place but it is a very good dub! I will say if you haven’t already, you should maybe look up some UA-cam videos of the 90s dub for comparison lol !!

    I've been wanting to watch Sailor Moon for a while now but couldn't figure out where to watch. Because Ik some anime's such as Fruits Basket where the Reboot ended up being more faithful to the manga. Along with a I think Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood where its more faithful to the source.

    like you, sailor moon was not really on while i was really invested in anime as a child, so while i'm sure i did briefly watch parts of the 90s anime, my first real exposure to sailor moon was via the manga in high school, and i really fell in love with the manga. i'm personally not 100% in love with either adaptation.
    the manga is very fast-paced, and lacks depth in some areas, but this is less obvious when you read it in manga form; there's natural places to stop, and i imagine if you were reading it as it was publishing, you would have spent a lot of time in between chapters wondering where the story would go, so this would, for most people, fill in a lot of holes.
    while i appreciate crystal's attempts to faithfully adapt the manga, it just doesn't work as well for animation. i think the tv series, for all its animation issues, dealt with this better because it was again, a weekly format. but the movies have been very oddly paced, as much as i have loved seeing my favorite plot beats from the manga lovingly animated.
    on the other end, the 90s anime really dumbed down a lot of the more dramatic plot points, or completely removed them. i think the first season of the 90s anime is super great, and i actually prefer its finale compared to the manga. but as a huge fan of the outer senshi, i've felt like the 90s anime totally screws them over in a lot of ways (pluto and saturn especially)
    also with regards to changing mamoru's age: i always disliked that change myself. however, i saw a theory recently that it's possible that his age discrepancy was due to the anime using takeuchi's old notes, as she did provide the anime team with some of her materials. in her original sketches for mamoru, she notes him as being 17-18, so it's possible that's where the change came from.

    I'd say it also hugely depends on what you expect. Manga and Crystal by the virtue of being an adaptation are serious. Original anime (especially 4th season) it's more of a cartoon, comedy. In my case I usually skipped transformation scenes, got bored with long never-ending fight scenes but loved Rei and Usagi arguments and especially later Chibiusa's quarrels with Usagi. I realized at some point that I usually enjoy first half of each episode when they all just act silly and are simple teenage girls and play of each other in friendly banter than the last 10 minutes with 'action' scenes.
    I'd say the comedy part can be enjoyed by almost anybody, the eternal romance and punishing in the name of the moon are really aimed for the young teenage girls.
    Also (minor spoiler) the 5th season and the new forbidden romance is a completely new dynamic and as much as it annoyed me at the beginning, it was both funny and more mature and even controversial. But we needed all that 'filler' to get to know characters involved. It wasn't the case in manga or Crystal.
    PS. (Spoilers)
    Mind that Mamoru in original Anime knows his destiny but meanwhile does what he can to not end up alone with Usagi, never gets physical with her, barely even kisses her and in general keeps her at distance, treats her more like a younger sister. It also takes us over 4 seasons for him to tell her what he feels. So the age difference is not so controversial as he really doesn't get into 'relationship proper' with her, acts more like an older brother, protector (there's a wordplay here, mamoru means literally 'to protect'). That's also why when Seiya shows up and he's not a college student but Usagi's classmate 5th season feels so different. Usagi's confronted with real young girls emotions for the first time (the date episode and especially the scene when she's worried he's about to make a move on her ;) ). With Mamoru it was more of an idealistic view of love from the point of view of prepubescent young girl. More like a teenage girl having poster of handsome movie star, in this case her future prince, her destiny - from that point of view the age difference doesn't seem so inappropriate anymore.

    Accept the things you cannot change, have the courage to change the thing you can and have the wisdom to know the difference. this because it is the most important thing of the Serenity prayer that foreshadows of is happening during events of the manga, crystal and eternal meant and this is something that Sailor Moon have to choose in the final arc of the manga. The quote of Serenity thing that happen during all five arcs of the manga and Crystal and Eternal accept the things I cannot change: when Usagi and Mamoru arrive at the restore Moon Kingdom after defeating Metalia Luna tells her that she's now the new queen of the resurrected Moon Kingdom, but Usagi denies, saying that she would rather stay with her loved ones back on Earth, where she now belonged and she realize that she cant's bring back the way they were of what happen 1,000 of years so she have to accept something she cannot change and move forward new life with friends and family. Have the courage to change the things I can: Sailor Moon and her friends realize that it's too late to save and bring back does how already blessed their loyalty to your evil lord and master like Beryl, Demande, Dr. Tomoe, and Sailor Galaxia is just like Uranus said they no longer human anymore but they can at least stop there lord and master from destroying the world. And have the wisdom to know the difference: This is were Sailor Moon have make a choose destroy the Cauldron or not destroy the Cauldron, if she destroy the Cauldron then Chaos will cease to exist this also cause the stars seed to cease to exist which change everything the world might end up be completely different, if does not destroy the Cauldron then everything will be restore to way it was but Chaos always comes back start a war all over again history might repeat it self but she chooses neither she choose her own path and sacrifices herself once again but then Guardian Cosmos the small but powerful guardian of the Cosmos Crystal, resided within the Galaxy Cauldron saw Usagi in the Cauldron, she was surprised that Usagi and her friends could retain their physical forms within the Cauldron. She asked Usagi if she had come to the Cauldron to throw her life into it and start a new star's history, or if she wanted to live as she was. Given the choice, Usagi said that she wanted to live her life as she was, no matter how difficult it might be, to build a future together. Guardian Cosmos granted their wish, and as they were being pulled away, Usagi asked about Chaos. Guardian Cosmos told them that Guardian Chaos and the Chaos Seed had been dissolved into the Cauldron, but could be born again but Sailor and friends will be ready for it, and that act that could save everything even if alters course of history the risk seen worth it Sailor Moon now has the wisdom to know the difference to accepting what she can't change and changing what she can and that's is the most important meaning quote of the Serenity prayer of the manga, crystal and eternal and Cosmos of Sailor Moon.

    I tend to prefer to read manga for a few reasons, such as that it’s the most direct way to get the author’s vision for a story, I feel like anime adaptations are often a mixed bag. I started reading the manga and didn’t even know the 90s anime differs quite a lot. It’s disappointing to me bc I have a friend who’s a big fan of the 90s anime but hasn’t read the manga and I was hoping to share my thoughts with her going through the story, and I guess I still can but it’s frustrating to hear they differ a lot

    • @the-NightStar
      @the-NightStar 2 роки тому +6

      And the problem I have with your comment is that it takes the characters VERY seriously, it is just that there are moments of lighthearted comic relief, but in fact, I disagree with you as it shows the characters in a very relatable way that very much show the bond and camaraderie of these characters. The battles are absoutely not any more nonsensical than the original source material and the monsters of the day are not a "joke", they are whimsical and almost always centered on that episode's plot or message. It sounds to me that you just have to get over the fact that Sailor Moon is as much of a comedy as it is a drama. Every similar anime from Dragon Ball, to The Slayers, to My Hero Academia has it's own mix of dramatic and comedic scenes. And if you watch anime at all, this is just something you have to get used to, or not bother.

      The 90’s movies or Crystal’s movie? For the 90’s, the movies are filler/canon. If I remember correctly, they’re just expanding on the characters backstories. I say also canon cause I know one or two of the movies are based on the short stories mangas that Naoko Takeuchi wrote, but ultimately they don’t contribute to the overall plot. Crystal has one movie which is the latest development for Crystal and is canon. It covers what would’ve been a “4th season”. I think going forward Crystal is just going to wrap up the series with movies instead of seasons. I don’t remember the order as I don’t think it matters to the story but I believe there’s one movie after each season of the series. Hope this was helpful 🤍🌙

    Hey there probably no way to get to me in time because the sale ends in 2 days 😭 but xbox has Sailor Moon - The Complete Classic Series for $59.99 but when I look in the comments of it on Xbox people are complaining that its not the original Dic voice actors and its the Vic or Vis voice actors.. is there a version where I can get the original voice actors… idk if I would even care really cuz I haven’t herd sailor moon original voice in idk how long. But the fact people are complaining about it makes me worry.

    I am still confused should I watch the Cristal first or the 90's

      Crystal first then the 90s if you don’t mind a lot of filler, Crystal follows the original source material more accurately

    do you think reading the mangas are an important part to the series?

    • @okyogirl8395
      @okyogirl8395  2 роки тому +4

      Not particularly. It looks like Crystal so far is adapting the story pretty accurately. But crystal isn’t completed yet so if you want to know the ending, you’d have to read the Manga

    I KNOW THIS WAS POSTED MONTHS AGO BUT-- I was recently commissioned to write a sailor moon fic and I know absolutely nothing about the anime. I don't need to *know* everything about it but I kind of need someone to explain the context behind the prompt I got from the commissioner? And the relationships between some characters? If anyone sees this and knows even just the tiniest bit about sm pls help a woman out 😭😭

    In 90s Sailor Moon does it take big gaps between the main storyline episodes? In Crystal its all linear progresssion?

    • @okyogirl8395
      @okyogirl8395  2 роки тому

      For the most part it’s like partial filler like for a season the first few and last few episodes will be mainly storyline and the filler in between will have little parts related to the storyline so it kind of tricks you into watching everything. But there is one season that is completely filler which is Sailor Moon R (each season has a letter following it so this is the second season) but I still like it. Crystal is linear with some creative changes but also with it being so linear you don’t get the chance to spend a lot of time with the other characters

    I don’t understand what you mean by canon episodes
    Etc. I am one of the OG fans of sailor moon. I saw it when I was in the fourth grade, too. 90’s sailor moon was the best in regards to everything like their names, music choice, characterization, love story etc. I just started watching Sailor Moon Crystal for the purpose of the updated animation of the OG sailor moon, but to my surprise, I didn’t like it. The names I still gotta get used to it. And I can’t feel a connection to any of the characters 😢 where is the playful banter between Darien and Serena????? That was the best part of the show. He would call her meatball head
    😂 and that was cute as hell, but in Crystal, he calls her Bun-head which doesn’t make sense 😅😅😅😅😅 doesn’t he know the shape of buns? And how do I see the 200 episodes dubbed? I’m referring to the 90s sailor moon 🌙
