Hey guys! Amazon recently had slashed a bunch of prices on their stock of Viz Media’s Sailor Moon Blu-rays, and I took this as the opportune time to finally upgrade my entire DVD collection. YES, it was still a hefty investment. But YES, it was so worth it.
In addition to hauling the Blu-rays, I wanted to take the time to review the limited edition box sets themselves, as well as reflect on each season of this timeless classic. So, curious to know what every single episode of Sailor Moon looks like sprawled out on someone’s bed? Let’s find out! Oh, and obvious spoiler warning for both the classic Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal!!

OH They look so good in the new blu ray boxes! And seeing them together is just so satisfying ^^ I STILL need to collect Sailor Moon. I always figured I would just get around to it some time, but so much keeps coming out LOL (which is a compliment to how great being an anime fan is these days!) Love the booklets they each come with, so much art!
I'm suddenly realizing its been so many years since I've done a legit rewatch of Sailor Moon. Need to fix that soon ^^

The art Viz used for the 90s show was all drawn by an Italian artist called Marco Albiero.
He essentially redrew art that was used way back then, from VHS/LD to various merch and even the manga. Style inspired by the character designs of each season.
And yes the character illustrations and backgrounds were drawn separately. I think it was done that way to give licensees the option to mix and match art.
The Blu-rays released in Japan reused their old art but with added glitter effects (which kinda cheapened the look)
The Viz releases do look great all together.

Great video just nostalgic for me when I got the sets as well even the original dub dvds like I remember buying the original s box set 13 years ago from a secondary seller on Amazon brand new for 25 dollars and I got really lucky I am so grateful to own both dubs because I made a great memory watching both with my grandmother her favorite characters was Tuxedo Mask and Chibiusa my grandmother did pass away a month ago so thanks for making this review.

To complete your collection you need to hunt down the DiC adaption witch came officially in 14 individual DVD’s for season 1 and R and the pioneer release of s and superS for the 90’s version unfortunately to get the official releases there very expensive (the bootlegs are also usually sold at hi prices)
Time to upgrade to the new releases. Viz just released Season 1 complete on Bluray and the quality is way better than the 2014 releases. Its a huge difference.
Yeah, all that's needed is to upgrade on seasons 1-S since SuperS & Sailor Stars used the same upscale as the new first season set and looks better than what's on Hulu still.
I personally got rid of my boxes for space but this should be simple enough to swap out discs for those who want to upgrade but keep everything else in the Limited Editions.
I kinda wish there was Sailor Moon: Beginnings, an anime prequel series that focuses on the Sailor Scouts when they were kids. If that were to happen, I want the series to start with the Sailor Scouts (And Sailor Moon herself), when they were babies, and throughout the series, I want to see them grow up, and I want the series to end with Sailor Moon as a 14 year old, and Sailor Venus as a 14 year old, leading up to the events of Sailor Moon.

Of course, I hope it was helpful. Definitely check out the newly released sets (they are complete season BDs in white packaging). The sets aren’t as fancy, but the remaster quality is significantly higher!

Impressive collection indeed what's your fav episode of each season ? For me is this . Season 1 kitty chaos season 2 when usagi and mamarou babysit a kid. Season 3 when chibi moon comes back season 4 when they wanna know who chibi usa bf is and season 5 the one where the kid needs surgery and gives taiki inspiration

Hey thanks for making this. I'm a casual fan who watched it a little bit in the early 00's. On the Cartoon Network I think. I've been getting more into it ever since "Saban Moon" was found. The R's and S's and Crystals were confusing, but it makes sense now.

What I did with my set. I put each Blu-ray of each season in part one case and put all dvds in each season in part two case
Even though I already own everything you shown in this video, I still enjoy watching it especially hearing your thoughts. The Australian Blu-rays by Madman Entertainment are far far superior in terms in HD quality. My god the difference is night and day! Just perfection 😍 Unfortunately still no news on a bluray set for the eternal movies 😭 I was the same as you, I started with the DVD sets because the UK/Portugal don't have any sailor moon dvd releases of any kind even though it's super popular in both countries. then as soon I got this current job, I bought the same sets and a region free bluray player. Just last night I finally got the courage and bought the Japanese only dvd set of the whole Live action Sailor Moon series. Trust me, it wasn't cheap 😭😭😭 I wish Viz media or someone else would release that show in the west 😭😭
It’s always interesting to see how even visual and audio quality can vary between licensed sets, even if they are both listed as “Blu-ray.” Remastering continues to play a huge role in how we perceive these older titles. But I’m happy to hear from another fan who went through a similar buying experience with these releases! I’ve always wanted to see what the live action was all about, too. I’ve heard it’s surprisingly amazing! And yes, still gotta wait for the Eternal films to be released. I have the Limited Edition sets too, I managed to buy them the moment they came out. Despite them being a hole in my pocket, they were worth it. I even have the original dub version on DVD along with the Crystal version and the Japanese Live Action version (PGSM). I don't know if you've heard about or seen it!

@@takuto2512 It is! The only thing is, it might be hard to find, so hopefully eBay still has the Blu-ray version because the DVD version wasn't that great because the English Subtitles didn't quite fit with the show.
Sailor Moon S & Sailor Saturn are my favorites
I don't HAVE a Blue ray player but VIZ Media 2015 to 2020 DID first make DVDs for it in fact until 2019 to 2020 VIZ media's redub was the ONLY way to watch Sailor Stars IN English.

I have these sets and love them but Just found out the recent rerelease of season 1and 2 blu rays use the superior Japanese scans so I will be picking those up and swapping out the blu ray disc for the better picture quality
Crystal got the "when we have time" treatment from Toei. It took over 10 years for them to finish five seasons of Crystal. I was in my 30's when it started and now I'm in my late forties. LOL. Ridiculous!. Season 1 and 2 were beautiful, in my opinion (blu ray fixed up bad drawings), although it still had some mistakes and some plot changes that were not necessary. The emotion and music were done very well. Season 3 had some of the worst transformations and sound effects. Also the mouths in season three made it look like they had no teeth and the white spots in their hair made it look like they all had bubble gum hair. Then, the movies, lord help me, the transformations didn't get any better, but whatever. I am excited for the cosmos movies coming out soon. I've been watching Sailormoon since 1996 and I honestly hope THIS IS IT. Let it rest, be done! It was a fun ride.

I want to get the bluray sets but I really had no choice but to get the dvd volume sets from viz because of money reasons and my Walmart only carried the dvd volume sets but I am grateful that I got all 5 seasons and the movies and Crystal seasons sets. Maybe one day I will upgrade. I do own some of the old 90s vhs/dvd/movie sets, those are my most treasure items.

I really wish i had all those Limited Edition Blu rays i only have a couple they are a struggle to get and now they're coming out with season sets . now part of me wants to go ahead and get the limited and double dip with the season sets just to have complete seasons. One last thing i know there are alot of complaints about the art but for me i'm getting one of my favorite series for the content not the art i want to look at art that bad i'll go on google that's just me though.
They are certainly an investment to own, both shelf space-wise and financially. Some have told me that certain sets are getting harder to find. If you are going for just the content, maybe the complete season Blu-ray sets will be the better investment. (Although it is fun to have all the boxes.) I Do Wish Had The Full Series Mainly the Classic Sailor Moon Because I Already Have the Crystal On Netflix.
Have the same collection of blus and really need to watch them all, because I've never seen the last few seasons. Mainly, I've seen the DIC dubs a million times and they made me obsessed. I really want those on DVD somehow, preferably that one set that had all the DIC stuff together and was official but must have been released on the down low. If I could just find a NEW one of that. I also need the Cartoon Network dubs of S and Super S on DVD, the official releases. I wish that the U.S. would get a complete and official release of the live-action show. I have some bootlegs of it. I'm surprised VIZ hasn't done that. I wonder if they are trying. I wonder if the Crystal Netflix season will get a release too.

About that while VIZ Media DID make the Sailor Moon Eternal movie for its DUB Netflix is the MAIN reason a ENGLISH DVD/Blue ray disc version of both it and the SAILOR Stars Cosmos movie will NEVER get a English DVD/Blue ray disc version.
But due to a writers strike in the USA like 4 to 5 months ago in 2023 the Cosmos movie doesn't HAVE a English release date yet since normally those dubs gets released 6 months AFTER Japan gets it Japan had the 2 Cosmos Movies air in June 7th and 30th 2023, respectively the USA Writers strike occurred shortly AFTER June 30th 2023.
Which is why the English dub of Sailor Moon Cosmos still hasn't happened yet.

God the movie boxes look bad, Glad in Australia we got the original Japanese art for the covers.

My only problem with Sailor Moon Sailor Stars is that they made it like Sailor Moon R splitting it into 2 Arcs and yes, I am glad that the 1st Arc resolved the problem from Sailor Moon Super S but the 2nd one was a train wreck. For example, Galaxia knew that Sailor Guardians as well as rulers of planets, stars, and asteroids had true Star Seeds as well as knew who Sailor Moon and her friends where in their civilian form so why didn't she attack them. Not to mention she freed Nehelenia from her prison knowing about her grudge with both Usagi and Chibi Usa because of being part of The Moon Kingdom as well as Chibi Usa's bond with Helios/Pegasus just so Hotaru can awaken as Sailor Saturn because she knew Hotaru was a baby after her battle with Pharoah 90 in Sailor Moon S. You know I didn't like how Mamoru was made useless in Stars and was killed off by Galaxia, Toei should have kept him as well Chibi Usa and Diana. The reason I say that is because I didn't like how Seiya disrespected Mamoru by telling him that he better protect Usagi which he has been doing since Season 1, Toei should have had Helios return to give Mamoru the Golden Crystal in the 1st Arc of Stars just like how Serenity gave Usagi the Silver Crystal in the 1st Arc of R during the battle with Ali & An. Not to mention Mamoru and Seiya having a rivalry with each other that is so tense that it makes the rivalry between Kagome and Kikyo look tame, also for drama have Usagi conflicted between Mamoru and Seiya just like how Inuyasha was between Kagome and Kikyo. As for Chibi Usa, they should have had a Stars episode with her and Hotaru fighting a Phage, not to mention I would have loved for Chibi Chibi to have driven Chibi Usa nuts.

I’m working my way through the Eternal Editions of the manga as we speak! The Eternal films were great, though I’m a bit nervous to see how the Cosmos films turned out 🤞

I also have the complete viz media box collectors limited edition of all five seasons. I have not yet bought the movies, I just have not gotten around to it yet. I never liked the English original Dic dub. I grew up in Mexico where all five seasons were released in Spanish with higher quality video and all was uncut. I taped every episode, but those videos I had don't exist anymore. I also have a huge collection of trading cards, music CDs, comics, coloring books, posters, calendars, etc. Sailor moon was probably 10 times more popular in Mexico then in America back then. But I wanted to ask. Would it be worth buying the re-release of the Blu-ray only discs of the series? Because they just released season one a couple months ago, and I was wondering if I should buy it as I already have the limited edition box sets. some have said yes because the video quality is better. But I wanted an opinion from anyone who sings this
That’s such a fascinating history you have with this series. I’m glad you’re able to own it all today on disc. As for the new Blu-ray, I’m going to see if they release all of the seasons with the new remaster. I’m in love with how the colors look in this latest Blu-ray. Maybe I’ll pick one up secondhand just to see how it looks. But otherwise, if they are going to release them all, then these new sets are probably the best yet
I found sailor moon limited edition combo blu ray on Amazon but they have part one and part 2 what is the difference and do you have to buy both?
Part 1 (which is likely what came with the LTD ED box) is the first 20-ish episodes of that season, while Part 2 would be the other half of that season. There are 5 seasons, and Viz released 10 sets in total. There are now complete season sets from Viz (5 total) that contain upscaled visuals. Hope this helps!

I'm super confused by the titles. Sailor Moon, R, S, Super S, Sailor Moon Stars. These are all the OG anime and are seasons 1-5? Does Sailor Moon Crystal cover all the arcs of the OG?
Sailor moon, R, S, Super S, and Sailor Moon Stars are seasons 1-5 of the original show and they have a lot of content that isn't in the manga, so it is way longer. Sailor Moon Crystal is a separate reboot that covers the storyline, but it sticks way closer to the manga making it much shorter.
and no so far the Crystal anime based on the Manga only covered up to S since for Crystals version of Super S and Sailor Stars were only done via the Eternal and Cosmos MOVIES BUT of those 2 movies Cosmos doesn't have a English dub yet.
the remastering is horrible though. VIZ fucked up a lot not even waiting for a JP remaster.

There should be plenty still in print on the market! If you’re just wanting the BD, Viz announced that they are starting to rerelease standard edition complete sets for each season (Blu-ray only).

They feature Viz Media’s BD remastering, which is a significant upgrade from DVD or VHS (though the saturation is quite high). Hope this helps!
Oh my dude you wasted your money on those sets. Those are the horrible picture quality ones from 2014. The new releases that have come out over the last few years are way better picture quality. The white cases with close up Sailor Moon on the front. I highly recommend getting those. The 4th release is due out this month. The only good thing about the 2014 sets are the booklets, thats about it. You can look up online the image comparison its like night and day.
I agree the picture quality is far superior but you can't deny these older sets just looks much nicer in terms of packaging. The new ones are so basic. No disc art, the reversible cover art isn't as nice and overall boring white design. These older sets has nice official Marco Albiero's art all over them and has the nice booklets too, on top of that coming with both Blu-ray and DVD. So he did a good thing he sold his older dvds. But like I said before the new sets does have nicer quality, but you can't blame him for buying theses since this video was posted over 2 years ago lol. I promise you these older sets with all the goodies will eventually become collectors items and sky rocket in price. Since he paid for $20 each, he got a good deal. Me personally as a collector, I got both versions lol 😆
Thank you friend! I agree, the newer BDs are MUCH nicer. I plan to buy them at some point and try to fit those discs into these LTD sets (somehow). It’s crazy that a remaster of the “remaster” was released so quickly after.
@@takuto2512 well Viz media did the remaster process themselves using the dvd masters they received from Toei Animation and the Australian version was originally going to use the same one and when they got the HD masters from Viz Media . They hate it. I should have the email from Madman entertainment somewhere. Hehe So they decided, to use the Italian dvd masters but upscaling to HD was gonna take time so the Blu-ray release in Australia/New Zealand was delayed by a whole year. In the end, Viz media decided to use that remaster as a re-release lol. They were getting a lot of complaints from fan. Me? I was happy with the Viz's remaster. Granted I watch sailor moon on Bootleg dvds for years so that hd upscale was amazing but sadly a lot of people didn't agree. But as soon I started collecting the Australian blurays. My god the difference is NIGHT & DAY. So in comparison, yeah Viz's original remaster is kinda bad. I wasn't planning to get the newer Viz sets but I caved ahah. Lol

The first box was the only one they did up with that pearlescent effect; all the others are flat colors. And it’s odd that you can’t find any, cause I think they still have some of the box sets still on Amazon!
@@kevintheboye9565 I looked on eBay and yeah, some of those boxes (besides S1) actually do look like they have a rainbow glow on them, so now I’m not sure if there are versions that are pearlescent and those that aren’t 😅 Wish I could give you a concrete answer on that!
