Is a $42 dollar plastic bag sufficient underwater housing for the Panasonic GH5? Today Griffin Hammond is going to find out!
In this episode of Cheap Thing Vs. Expensive Thing, we take the $42 DiCAPac WP-S3 and a $2000+ Ikelite 200DL package to see how they compare in protection, usability and image quality.
The Ikelite 200DL is an underwater housing solution made custom for the GH5, with individualized buttons, switches and knobs that give you tactile control over the various menus, switches and lens functions on your camera. Given that I only shoot underwater maybe 3 times a year, $42 is the clear winner for me.
I bought the Dicapac WP-S10 for my 70D when I went to Thailand last year and it worked great! I didn't do any filming - BUT it was amazing to be able to get DSLR quality photos while swiming, surfing, going on hikes next to waterfalls, etc.
I probably should've gotten the bigger WP-S10. It would've fit my GH5 better.

I feel like a lot of channels ignore the fact that equipment rental is a thing. For those of us who don't shoot underwater that much, the way to go would probably just be to rent the housing for the gig and pass that cost to the client.
That said, I think the dry bag really shines in one aspect, and that's for practice use. I would never use one for my main camera, but if I needed to practice the base concepts of underwater photography/video, the way to go about it would definitely be to buy a dry bag and toss my old GF5 into it. If the bag fails, I don't loose anything important to my income stream, and I still get to learn the ropes of what does and does not work in an underwater setting.
I understand that you have to produce these in batches to keep the release sustainable, so the feedback that is being tossed out right now will take some time to be processed. With that in mind, I'm gonna hold off on airing my disappointment or whatever, but I think including something like the above passage might be valuable when applicable.
If the cheap thing is always going to be useless then these videos are not that interesting. For "on a budget film makers" it may be better to pick cheap things that still have a use in some conditions. To help people know where they can save money but what the trade offs are.

Agreed. Would have been more useful to compare a cheap real housing (like seafrogs with housings at 300/400usd) vs really high end housings (a 3000usd nauticam for instance). This video is just pointless...
Agree. I know the expensive one is better and will give me a better experience. I don't have that money, what I need to know is if the cheap one will do the job without killing my camera. I'm fixing half my problems on set with tape, I'm not buying a $2000 case any soon.
I think the dicapac is the best option if you want to film surf/wakeboard/kite… footage.
It makes sure if you would drop your dslr in the water or you get a wave over your head it will survive but you can still get those dslr shots instead of a typical gopro shot.
Gotta say, I'm a little disappointed with the new content on Indy Mogul. The last three episodes I've seen have basically called for or shown pro-level equipment. In particular, this series has compared a dirt cheap item to a professional item twice and concluded that the more expensive item is better. This was always going to be a foregone conclusion. This series should be reworked to talk about how you can get good results *without* the professional level equipment, instead of just saying that the $2k+ custom hard-shell underwater case is better than a generic $40 dry bag.
You claim that price was taking into account, but that seems hard to believe since it was stated that both gave great photos (and presumably kept the camera dry equally well) but the $2000 case still makes the $40 bag not worth it? This show would work better if the contestants were at least more equal (a decent camera costs $50-$100 minimum, so how could a $50 drone produce usable video?), and their value was considered in relation to their price. As it is, your own video suggests that the dry bag is a viable way of taking a DSLR underwater and getting good video, at 1/50th of the cost of the hard case, so why not point that out?
I think there's been a shift in what kind of audience they're targeting with these videos. Old school Indy Mogul was mostly for people making low-budget movies at home. This series seems more geared towards people who do videography on a professional level and may NEED to know if a piece of gear will get the job done or not.
I think I'd like it a little more if it was framed as "Look, this is what you actually get in exchange for paying the higher price, so you decide if it's worth it for your needs" rather than a competition with a defined winner and loser, personally.
Give them time to reinvent themselfs man. I personally love these video's. They get into budget solutions for filmmaking, at the same time showing what the professional counterpart of gear is, once the ship with cash arrives.
I think it doesn't matter what his actual opinion is because he covers what both cases excel at. You make the decision...I'd rather hear someone's honest thoughts about something than have them try to jam it into a category of always going with the cheapest or the alternative or whatever. I still have all the information I need at the end of this video.

I didn't have either of these and I was still able to get an underwater shot with my gh5 and it looked great. Because I was only looking for a half in and half out shot I was able to use a fish tank.

@@NB_FILMMAKING it's a good video but it really doesn't give you any new information I'm talking about the nuances of that type of shot how to avoid Camera slide in the tank how to mitigate ugly reflections and flares in a few other tricks to get amazing shots.

I have the cheap thing, and it works fine if you’re not planning on doing professional stuff. If you want to shoot photos or videos underwater, get it. Due to the shape, air inside, difficulty of use, etc., it won’t replace the expensive case, but it can be used on almost any DSLR/mirrorless camera.
Once you get used to it’s quirks, problems like it being on and recording at the wrong time won’t be an issue. I have an A7RII, and I only use prime lenses. The A7RII is very flexible with its button customization, and it achieves very fast autofocus, depending on the lenses and water clarity.
I separated focus from the shutter release, which helps really well for how I take underwater photos.
My main two issues are the amount of air inside and the lens cap. The air issue can be solved by adding weight, but I don’t want to lose my camera, and I can attach tape or do something else to the front to keep the lens cap stationary, but I’m too lazy.

I use my camera for canyoneering where I will be rappelling down waterfalls, and swimming thru deep pools. I previously bought a camera housing for my old mirrorless camera and it worked but it was so bulky it made it a lot less functional for my application. It is important I am able to throw my camera in a fanny pack while I go rappel down a waterfall but I am able to have it handy for when I need it. I am looking at upgrading my mirrorless camera to a newer model and I am trying to figure out if I should go with a dive housing again or if I should just go with a bag. I am leaning towards the bag so my camera will be a lot more handy. and then I can take it out of the bag for when I set up a long exposure shot.
I'm really digging this series, Griffin! Although I expect the expensive thing to win pretty much every time, you're doing a great job showing the similarities in quality and functionality between the two items. Filmmakers can see what the cheap one can do in comparison and judge for themselves if the extra cost is worth it for their budget. Great job!

I was thinking to use the "plastic bag" to shoot in the rain with a non weather-sealed camera body...any recommendations for that?

Definitely an interesting concept. Its cool to understand the limitations and abilities of the cheap thing, even though we know the expensive thing is going to outperform it by miles (at least in this case).

I've been checking out cheap (Meikon/Seafrogs) housings ($3-400) or surf housing (Salty housing) (~$9-1000) housings for the A6000/A6500 cameras. Any interest in testing?

The cheap thing on this one is great for a one-time shoot or a vacation that's kind of last minute. But if I was going to be doing multiple shoots underwater I'll go for the expensive thing every time. And I'm actually use both of these on multiple camera bodies.

Fair review. I have a Dicapac I bought years ago and now I might be doing some surf or wetsuit content and maybe need to dig it out. It won't be submerged that much, just probably battered by waves in Cornwall.
Question: Does the expensive case float or sink? It looks heavy so I'm thinking the weight of the case + the camera and lens will outweigh the air inside whereas I found the Dicapac to float as it's quite simply a bag with air inside - I guess this does depend on the camera you use with it so don't buy one and take my word for it

Because I feel it is in the 'so cheap you may as well' category, maybe for those who are going to be snorkeling once in a one week holiday somewhere then not again for a year or two.

I finally decided to catch up on some of the episodes and all of a sudden months worth of videos are gone from the channel? What happened here, it kinda seems like the channel exploded and was pieced back together for some reason?
My Canon M5 has excellent physical controlls, lots of scrolling wheels etc. and I feel like it would be the perfect camera (by Canon at least) to use with the cheap one.

I got myself a Meikon housing for my Sony RX100 for about $160. It’s solid, and less bulky than ikelites. I don’t trust the plastic bags. I have some video examples on my channel. :)

I used to have that Dicapac, until it killed my camera in the sea. It doesn't last forever, it handled the pool just fine but in the sea... Forget it.

The only problem with this review is it doesn't take into consideration people who are looking for something that is not for underwater.
We are needing something to put our camera above water button stream. Essentially you were wanting to do distance shots but we don't want to really expose our camera to the possibility of falling into the water even though we have flotation devices were going to be attaching or try to. We don't have any information about the bag what it's after beads can give us or if we can attach flotation devices to the more expensive model either. It's a good review for underwater but it locks and entire section a review for above water photo takers who are a section of people who are buying this product. Not everyone is going underwater who are needing a waterproof camera. Rainproof won't do because our camera might actually fall into the water. GoPro won't work because we're going to be doing distant shots and some up closes and some interactions that we don't really feel will be efficient with a GoPro. We're considering buying a camera and we don't know if we should buy an expensive water camera or invest into water bag to protect our camera

Dicapac worked up until it didn't. It's seams are weak as a design flaw. Cost me my favorite lens on the second use at only about 5' depth in a pool. Garbage. Not worth the risk. Go with Outex, Seafrogs on the cheap end. Ikelite or even Nauticam if you are a lottery winner.

Camera housing usually cost the same as the camera +-! If you buy a $1600 camera, yes be ready to spend $1700! The dom is optional!
And if you can't afford that, go for a point and shoot camera!

Meh, if you're a serious photographer you're spending a lot of money anyways. It's like saying a cheap car isn't cheap just because it doesn't cost the same as a bicylce, camera gear is expensive even on the cheaper side of things, specially if it's your profession.

The cheap option costs less than 2 rolls of Gaff tape -that's pretty cheap in terms of film making or photography gear.

I think it's really tragic you guys haven't really clarified whats happened to your channel to your actual viewers. You were just like "we're back, have some content" and seem to have expected us to embrace how ridiculous this material is from us. Most people who are Indy film-makers will not be interested in a $2000 product when a plastic bag will get you the underwater shot. Tell us whats happened here.
