Perfect timing! Literally just wrote a review for Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins on Goodreads the other day and said how much I love isolated settings. I don't think it's a universally loved book, but I really enjoyed it. Loved No Exit, The Guest List, and One by One. Ruth Ware's books on audio are fantastic. The narrator, Imogen Church, could read the dictionary and I'd love every second of it 😂 Thanks for the recommendations Elizabeth!!
Absolutely! I thought about including Reckless Girls in here, but I had such a bad time with The Wife Upstairs, I didn’t feel right recommending it, especially since I haven’t read it and I’ve been hearing mediocre reviews. But I’m glad you enjoyed it! I completely agree about Imogen Church! Love her narration so much! Some Americans don’t like listening to audiobooks with British narrators for some reason, but I love it, and her in particular! 💛
Isolation tropes are my favorite, so I wasn't surprised to see most of the books talked about. I own most, with a few on my TBR. The ones on my TBR, you've given me the nudge to go and start reading ....
I either read the book or added them to my tbr! Vibed with it all. Also, I couldn’t stop staring at your hair, eyes, and teeth! 🤣 you’re so pretty 😭 new sub!!
This was so well done, I loved the way you categorized the books and the fact you can tell you really read them, great job. :) Lucy Foley has another one very similar to The Guest List called The Hunting Party and I think I am in a minority of people who actually preferred it because it was more grounded in reality. Ruth Ware's debut In Dark Dark Woods would also fit. I'd go with The Shining for isolation by King, but do read Misery, it's one of his best. I'd also rec They All Fall Down by Rachel Howzell Hall or Death in the Family by Tessa Wegert, they are well worth your time. :)
I love The I’m Thinking of Ending Things, since the conversations are hard truths and philosophical. I definitely agree with you on the audiobook, I tried it after reading the book and was hooked again, and that scene you talked about is perfectly eerie. 🥶 I’m not sure if it’s an isolation trope, but Iain Reid’s other book, Foe, happened just inside their own house. No camps, or any trips.
Love love love the isolation trope. Some are executed perfectly, others are meh but I can't get enough of this in my reads. Below is a list of some I've read, some in my TBR pile and some not yet published. Hey! The algorithm just recommended me your video and I loved it and you got yourself a new subscriber! I already had some of those books on my TBR but this was the last push to actually read them. Also, I'm on my way to watch some of your newer videos promptly ^^
Oh this was such a great video, and it was organized really well, so kudos!!! I would seriously love to see a vlog of you reading some of the books you featured at the end that you haven't read yet, could be so fun!
🤣🙌🏻 I felt the same way when I learned it too. Still not sure how to do it on the computer, though it’s much easier to just click forward with the mouse.
😂 Yes! Some people don’t like dual timelines, but I think it’s a really effective way (in a thriller) to confuse the reader/hide information that lends to a potentially great twist. You’re going to love it!
Thanks for this great video. I hope you enjoy your TBR picks. A couple of them are on my list. Here are a few I have read in the last couple of years: The Sanatorium by Pearse, The Cutting Season by Locke, and Dangerous Women by Adams.
Living for these long and interesting videos! Maybe the most exciting trope in the genre! No exit, rock paper scissors and there were none and passengers were all fantastic and seven deaths was spectacular from start to finish with so many wild twists at the end! Other books I have yet to read! You are great as always Elizabeth!
I’ve read most of your recommended books and loved them. The ones I haven’t read are on my TBR and your TBR suggestions look great and will be added to my TBR. I follow a couple other book tubers but you and I have basically the exact same taste in books so if you love it, I know I’m going to. That’s super helpful! Thanks for the suggestions!!
That’s awesome! I’m so glad you loved my recs. I tell all of my bookish friends IRL to check out booktube. Even if their reading tastes don’t match mine, there are so many and everyone can find someone with similar taste in books. I appreciate you! 💛
Thank you so much for this video!! This is my favorite trope and I can’t wait to read some of suggestions. I super excited for the Women in the Library coming out this summer 📕
Thank you for watching it! I love isolation tropes too. I haven’t heard of Women in the Library! Does it use this trope too?? The title immediately intrigues me! Looking it up now! 💛
Yessss I have The Woman in the Library on my tbr as well! All I remember about it is that patrons at the library are told to stay in a room while security investigates a murder. And OF COURSE one of the patrons that's locked in the room is the murderer. Sounds fantastic 😀
Have you watched The Castle Rock series on Hulu? I enjoyed both seasons, they have strengths for sure..a few issues, but overall it was a fun ride. The seasons are lightly connected (but don’t quote me as maybe there’s things I didn’t notice, but what I remember is it’s a name here or there in season 2 that you’d recognize from season 1)…but I ask because season 2 has a younger version of Annie Wilkes from Misery and the actress who played her was incredible. I believed every moment that she was Annie Wilkes, she made the season for me. Season 1 was my favorite of the two in many ways, but having Annie Wilkes as a character and the ending of season 2 were also my favorite.
I’ve seen season one, but I don’t think I’ve continued on in the series. I’ll have to look. Is Lizzy Caplan the one who plays the Annie Wilkes character? (The one from Mean Girls and Party Down) She’s incredible in everything! I also really like Melanie Lynskey. Have you seen Yellowjackets, on Showtime? It’s REALLY GOOD too. Similar tone.
Well, you should add The Escape Room by Megan Goldin and Dead In The Family by Sarah Wegert. These two books are great examples of isolation, one of which is about trapping in an elevator, and the other is set on an island.
I started reading The Escape Room a couple of times and I couldn’t get into it, which is a bummer because I loved Night Swim so much by her! Definitely looking forward to her new release this year. And I haven’t heard of the other one. Looking it up now. Thanks!
Great video! I have read many of the books you mentioned. The ones I loved were No Exit, An Unwanted Guest, The Troop, and Every Vow You Break. I didn't care for The Cabin at the End of the World and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. I am interested in Stranded, These Silent Woods, and The Long Weekend. Do you know when The Long Weekend is supposed to be released? Great recommendations!
Hey, thanks Teresa! The Cabin at the end of the world and I’m thinking of ending things definitely stand apart from the other books you liked, so I can kind of see which tropes don’t really work for you. We definitely have some overlap in our tastes nonetheless! The Long Weekend comes out March 29th! 💛
One of my favorite bookstagram posts is my post about The Troop. It’s my favorite because I was REELING after reading it. I was horrified and grossed out and it stuck with me for a while. I really liked Shiver. It gave me the young(ish) adult love triangle drama without the obnoxiousness of what Nothing But Blackened teeth gave us. It was tolerable. I haven’t read No Exit yet! I need to ASAP. Scrib’d took away my access to it for some reason though. 🤔
You know you read a lot when you get throttled by scribd. I’m pretty much already cut off as soon as my new ones become available every month. Now we’re m hearing a bunch of people who didn’t like no exit so I don’t know what to think! 😭 I still think you’ll love it.
I’m sure I’ll like it. I forgot to mention, I’m reading They All Fall Down by Rachel Howzell Hall right now, and it totally has an isolation trope. A group of strangers, lured to a remote island under false pretenses, no way off the island once they all realize it, everyone has a secret, people die, all the trope requirements are there. I’m liking it so far.
@@meridithcurran3092 you’ll have to let me know how it is when you finish it. I looked it up on goodreads and it has a 2.89 rating, which shocked me out of interest. That may be the lowest rated book I’ve ever seen on goodreads! Lol.
😂😂😂 They are so similar but so different at the same time. Something about the way both of those books are done, just does it for me. I think you’re going to love it!
Great video, as usual. Also, I think I would truly enjoy a book narrated by you!!! I also agree with one of your other followers that Imogen Church is the truth!!!
Just got done reading the guest list. I did guess the ending pretty early but it was still a good time.
Good to hear it! I did not guess the ending on that one. Good on you!
so many good books! I LOVE the isolation trope
