- The story of President Roosevelt’s gangster car actually begins with Al Capone. Capone was an infamous Chicago gangster during the Roaring Twenties. He was arrested at the ripe old age of 33 for evading his taxes, and his car was subsequently confiscated by the U.S. government. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, FDR became worried that there would be an assassination attempt on his life. He needed transportation with more serious protection. Al Capone’s 1928 gangster car was the only one that fit the bill with its armor plating and bullet-proof windows. It was requisitioned and used to transport the president to the Capitol to deliver his famous “Infamy” speech on December 8, 1941.
