No AC on Communicating Trane XV18 Heat Pump

- This is a little video to help people who are working on the XV18 fully communicating Trane Heat Pump. I had a bad drive that was no longer communicating with the indoor unit and thermostat. Figured out that the Drive was bad at the outdoor unit. I replaced the drive and was able to start up the system again.
If your thinking of getting one of these, I would suggest a two stage unit instead. I have one of these since 2016. I have replaced the eev board and expansion valve solenoid. Replaced the air flow control board just recently. Replaced the drive(gecko shorted back side of drive) Drive took 3 weeks to receive in middle of summer. So trust me when I say get a two stage unit instead.
Starting in 2025 the "2 stage units" are now called "multi stage units" and haves drives also. The gecko thing is just bad luck - its very rare for these drives to go bad. You EEV board issues are because you got the wrong air handler - dont buy the eev style air handler. Ive never needed a drive and had to wait - sounds like your servicce company didnt know where to look
That's what's bad about Trane. Parts take forever to get. People get mad without a/c or heat.
I have the XV18 unit. Installed in 2017 when we built the home. Six years, no issues so far. I do have the unit checked and cleaned by the installer every six months. I asked the service tech about his thoughts on the latest, greatest units when this unit reaches end of life. He recommended Daikin. Any thoughts service guys?
Daikin is chinese junk, stick with American Standard/Trane
I’m curious why took 4-5 days? We stock those drives in our shop . 18-20 seer units all have the same drive from 2-5 ton so it relatively universal. They do have that new 17 seer link drive, however our dealer stocks 5-10 drives for 17-20 seer variable speed units. Times change no more carrying contactors and capacitors, start carrying drives, thermistors and, system controllers lol
Piping carries refrigerant flow heat sinking for three phase variable frequency inverter that runs the three-phase variable speed compressor. It cools the power transistors in the compressor driver module. The module should have a failsafe temperature shutdown if inverter gets too hot.
It is important to ground the metal chassis of outside unit to utility main breaker panel grounding stake and advisable to put lightning surge suppressor on incoming power lines to outside unit. The serial comm lines RS-485 data link transceivers are vulnerable to lightning strikes in the area.
The piping removes heat from the drive. It’s not sensing the temperature of the pipe.
Does the error code 177.04 will be the gas sensor on the tam9 ?
Looking at one yesterday couldn't figure it out but i think it has something to do with the j4 plug someone cut the diode and capacitor out of the wire and ran it straight, i think drive might be bad.

No they don't have a run capacitor
I changed 2 of these. That’s called the personality module plug. It just tells you what size the unit is basically. So that tells the board what it is. Occasionally those can go bad too. Actually you’re not you shouldn’t run into that many problems with the drive. There’s drive test you can do on the CDA. Carrier and Lennox have a lot more issues with the drives. Drives can go bad because of refrigerant charge and some other issues all the time.
How can a “new system” have parts on back order? I was thinking about getting one of these but I change my mind.
Go with 2 stage instead. More reliable.
Where do you connect for thermostat on ac condenser
Interesting. Whenever I run into a 126 code we have to run a new thermostat wire since the Data wire (brown wire) is DC voltage and can’t have any splices or thinner than 18AWG wire.
And yes never lose that Personality Module otherwise you’ll never hear the end of it 😒😅
I own a xv20i with the nexia controller... absolute junk in my opinion. Only 2 years old, constantly resetting breakers for erroneous codes, replaced the nexia controller due to INOP, now the compressor is out in the middle of summer and told it's on backorder with 48 people ahead of me waiting for one. These high efficiency units are not cheap and are less reliable than a 30 year old system I had in a previous home.
This is more likely a installation problem we are one of the largest XV dealers in the United States. These systems have specific installation procedures that MUST be followed in order for this system to operate correctly. New low voltage wire to the outdoor unit should always be installed whenever possible as well as the copper line set.sound like you have poor field connections probably due to using the existing control wire or not making a proper field connection because they failed to use the supplied grease on the connections. Have the company replace the low voltage wire to the outdoor unit,
I work on these XV's very so often, the company I work for usually send me when multiple techs cant figure out what's going on. Installation and proper settings are very important. Also these drives need to be updated every time trane comes up with a softward update, or else these systems will act up and then when you call and a tech reset power they can't figure it out because everything is back to normal. Also maintenance is very important especially the XV with TAMs because they rely on sensors for everything
Unit Good for just 10 years. Once unit is out of warranty, the drive will be to expensive to replace. Better to stay away from that kind of units.
Why? If it fails after 10 years, just get the part and replace it yourself. Not really that hard. Turn the power off and it's basically plug and play. You can get thermal paste at any electronics joint that sells microprocessors; e.g. Fry's.
If you are familiar with electronics there's always early failures in new components. Look up the "bathtub" curve for failures.
@@knobdikker not always those parts are on stock. Am a technician for 28 years. I hate to leave a customer without AC for a week because a part need to be order. A lot a customers they have only one unit. Once that drive goes out, no way to temporally make that particular unit to operate.

Yep we tell everyone they are nice when you have a warranty, after they can cost a ton to repair. The upfront cost and Cost after warranty make the units a stupid decision to install. People never make enough savings to make this worth that headache

You live under a rock? All the major manufacturers have inverter systems, and the trane inverters are definitely the most reliable and easiest to work on

Tech support won't walk you through the diagnostic on this anymore. You have to first contact the true variable system Tech in your company first
Want High technology ? Not for the ordinary people. Only for rich people who doesn't cares about money and time.
Like the US F-35 Lightning fighter jet, great when working but unreliable and a nightmare to maintain resulting in less than 50% being ready for combat, Trane XV units are are over-engineered and overbuilt beyond any rational need to perform their required simple task..the basic function of cooling a home. Great when they are working but requiring outrageously expensive maintenance and repair far beyond the routine skills of most HVAC contractors when not working.
These units are junk. Have had one several years and nothing but issues. I don’t think Trane makes quality units any longer.
Craig, these are very reliable units - the key is the install. If you have a install where they arent experts with these units and cut corners which many companies do - you are gonna have a bad time. If some top notch guys put it in correctly, itd likely be 10+ years before you needed any repairs. My company has installed close to a thousand of these - they have been out for almost a decade now. Very few problems
