  • Modification of the crankcase on Rotax 583 snowmo engine to fit aircraft gearbox reduction. This video shows how I machined the case halves on a short bed 1938 South Bend Lathe.
This also shows a modification to the case halves for the crankshaft bearing to attempt to make them last longer than 300 hours.

Very sound engineering on your part. I totally agree with ever thing you talked about in this video.

Thank you. Video just shows what I think, and I am not a service agent. I have not seen all the problems. I have had a lot of 2 cycle motorcycles, and have never had main bearing problems.

@@Adventurepilot70 I have had main bearings failures in the past. None were Rotax engines. All were four main bearing engines, and the bearings had metal ball separators.

Mercury out board racing division determined that above 8000 rpm,,,the needle bearings on the connecting rods start scooting, instead of rolling. Read into this what you will.

Ever wonder why Rotax connecting rods only have a oiling slot on one side of the rod. Its all about bearing loading in relation ship to rotating direction, and power stroke.

@@cropduster48sady46 Well the plastic cages certainly don't work on the Rotax engines.

I am not sure 100%, but I think the 583 has a different cut on the rotary valve to take advantage of the higher rpm potential of the engine. The ignition timing is also different, but not sure what the values are. The 582 only goes to 18 or 19 deg. btdc. I like your thanking on the bearing oiling. I am not a fan of inverted engines. Windage from the crankshaft keeps oil from getting to the bearings.

As I understand it, the 583 has a variable advance on the single ignition system. It also has higher compression, different rotary valve, much larger carburetors, RAVE valves, and the extra port as well as a larger tuned exhaust.
Good thing is that snowmo parts seem cheap.
