Create atmospheric and creepy shots with footage of ink. This is a classic compositing technique that I hope teaches you all a bit about luma mattes. We start with the basic technique of using luma matte to reveal footage, refine the matte with effects and time remapping, and then add layers of detail with blending modes and 3d camera moves.

Best Inky Snek I've seen
Hi
Confirmed: Ben Marriott is a SHNEK fan ...might have to do an episode on snakes to tempt the animation lord
Thanks! You do live in the land of sneks after all 🐍🐍🐍
Cool tutorial!
Really appreciate the Time-Remapping explanation with the best ever visual for it
Thank you for sharing Evan! As usually a great tutorial with lots of opening windows to new extrapolated applications. Probably the best Ae Channel! ❤
I've seen this inky reveals in a lot of templates recently. Thank you for showing us how. Great Technique.
Simple technique, life changing "life-hack" that's why I see all your videos even if I know the principal technique, there are always some hidden gems!
Your content is so good dude. Absolutely love it! 10/10! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Great tutorial!
Thank you for this great tutorial Evan. I’ve seen this trick done a million times and always wondered how it was done.
Happy to help!
Thank you sir I really needed that INKY SNEK in my life
Awesome Tut Sir
always learning something new from you evan! thanks : )
Awesome, thank you!
Hey Evan! Last year I began binging your channel (and others) in order to teach myself motion design skills in After Effects, in order to tackle a massive personal project. I couldn't have done it without your tutorials and knowledge. It ended up being around a 7 month solo project (from research/scripting to rendering/publishing) and I'm proud to say it's finally up on my channel. It's my first legit project in motion design, and I'd love it if you could take a look at some sections! Either way, thank you so much.
Thanks, Evan.
As always... great tutorial :)
Thank you so much!
Thank youuu
#teamcurves always
Very good bro
This is a simple bit useful tut, thanks man
Glad to hear it! I was trying something new with how the tutorial was organized so I hope it was helpful :)
@@ECAbrams appreciate it so much, you've helped me a lot understanding that monster called after effects hahah
TIL there are compositing options in effects/masks ! Thank you.
Oh, they are a treat! Blur only these things, key only those things, apply curves to only here and there. Such a powerful feature.
Thanks شكرا جدا
#teamcurves 💪
Any Poggers
I feel like I better google up what poggers is now.
@@ECAbrams you don't know what "poggers" means 😮 wooow
@@FLOWTUTS lol. I am truly out of touch with just about anything. I try to live a fairly offline hermit-like lifestyle out here.
@@ECAbrams i am online 24/7 haven't seen the sun in 7 years maybe one day i'll have a normal life
Thanks for this tutorial. In your opinion before we start to make some project in AE or templates which professional create all days and selling them on internet such as slideshow, logo reveal or promo and so forth or as you making this cool ink revealing in this video , is beter way of making them is making style frame or design bord in Photoshop or illustrator before animator try to use a bunch of effect and mess them in AE? how style frame or design bord help us to get a good result and create a perfect project in AE?
Think of your style frame as the ideal vision of how a thing will look. It can be easier to create a still version of a thing before trying to make an animated version of a thing. Often look development is also done by someone who does not perform the animation labour at all.
#teamcurves (and sometimes #teamlevels when the curves won't behave!)
I think I use levels most with clamping alpha on layers. Those times a linear falloff is all I need.
That green color is quite basil-ishk
Alternative title: Pesto Snek.
Also, best pun of the comments so far.
@@ECAbrams I shall slither that into my resume!
hi. Is "Audio in Motion Design Playlist" finished?
Not yet! I really have to get off my duff with that one.
mvp of the video is the adjustment layer trick...also the graph you used to explain time remap - that was rigged I suppose?
The time remap explainer was a lot simpler than it might look. The stretching is just a scale change on some split layers. Very janky behind the scenes there :)
I thought you were going to teach how to create the ink matte. :(
Like to make artificial or simulated ink? That's a cool idea for a future tutorial for sure. There are some techniques that might play well, but fluid dynamics are a little niche and costly in terms of hardware and software.
2021....really??
It is indeed 2021. Took this long to do a piece on luma mattes.
