TEDxGallatin - Sam Metcalfe - Visual Cognition a History of Artistic Experiments in 3D

Sam Metcalfe grew up and in Huntington, Long Island. He has been working with photography, painting and printmaking his whole life and has shown his paintings at the Roberson Museum, the Steven Rosefsky Gallery and in the 2010 Gallatin Arts festival. He attended Binghamton University for his undergraduate degree and graduated with honors in philosophy. Sam's honors thesis titled "Ontological Vagueness" was published by World Academic Press. He is currently a MA student at the Gallatin School of Individualized study who also works freelancing, doing graphic design, photography and image archival.
Sam's talk focuses on how artistic experimentation with media give us insight into both a mechanistic understanding of how our visual physiology works and how we organize and derive meaning from visual information. He relates a number of artistic experiments to modern neuroscience and how artists have discovered and altered our understanding of visual experience in similar ways to science's discoveries about the brain and visual cognition. To this end he follows a number of historical examples and ends up focusing on 3D Stereoscopy and this media's vast potential for the future exploration of our visual consciousness.
