SR-71 Blackbird - Anatomy
In 1957 the CIA initiated project Gusto. Its goal was to develop U2’s replacement. Enter General Dynamics Convair Division and Lockheed Martin Skunk Works.
General dynamics approach used two airplanes. The first being the B-58B and the second, the First Invisible Supper Hustler or FISH.
The idea was to have B-58B carry FISH up to launch altitude, but eventually General Dynamics failed to sell its B-58B prototype to the United States Airforce, imposing a major review to the project.
Because FISH was initially meant to be carried by another airplane, they quickly had to change this concept, to which they nicknamed KingFISH.
On Lockheed side, many designs were studied such as the Arrow 1, Archangel 1 and Archangel 2.
On November 25th, 1958, both companies received compensation to continue refining its prototype airplanes. For the next year, Lockheed would spend most of its time refining no less than 10 of its major designs, A-3 to A-12.
One pattern stood out from all models and that was the design trend of the delta wing as portraited on A-10 model and later established on the finalized version A-12.
The competition for the CIA secret airplane development came to an end on August 29, 1959 when Lockheed received an official notification for its winning design, the A-12. A $4.5 million-dollar advance award was given to continue development of the plane.
Eventually the Air Force saw a potential in developing an interceptor variant of A-12, becoming AF-12 under the project codename “Kedlock”.

There are a lot of video in UA-cam on SR 71, but none in this detail. The aspects/ topics talked here have not been covered anywhere else.
The amount of information, the organisation and comprehensive delivery of that information is outstanding. As always, the graphics/ renditions are wonderful and beautiful. Real engineering also did a good job at explaining the mechanism and construction behind it. But I like this explanation better.

Excellent production quality, and a good overview of the facts. There are some inaccuracies, however.
1. The sawtooth structure of the chines with embedded wedges of radar-absorbent material was indeed effective at absorbing radar energy, but it was the _shape_ of the chines that was mainly responsible for reducing the RCS:
> One of the structural designers presented the idea of modifying the bullet-shaped fuselage by adding a chine, a lateral downward sloped surface that gave the fuselage an almost cobralike appearance. Now the underbelly of the airplane was flat, and the radar cross section had magically decreased by an incredible 90 percent.
2. The purpose of the black paint was not to reduce the heat signature (the temperature reduction was minimal and would have no appreciable effect), but to enable Lockheed to use a softer Titanium alloy that would be easier to work with:
> At one of our daily seven a.m. planning sessions in Kelly's office, I volunteered some unsolicited advice about how we could use a softer titanium that began to lose its strength at 550 degrees. My idea was to paint the airplane black. From my college days I remembered that a good heat absorber was also a good heat emitter and would actually radiate away more heat than it would absorb through friction. I calculated that black paint would lower the wing temperatures 35 degrees by radiation.
3. The paint also contained tiny spheres of iron ferrites, so that it would absorb radar energy instead of reflecting it:
> Our chief chemist, Mel George, helped us to develop special antiradar coatings loaded with iron ferrites and laced with asbestos (long before it became a dirty word) to be able to withstand the searing heat from the tremendous friction hitting the leading edges of the airplane. These coatings were effective in lowering the radar cross section and comprised about 18 percent of the airplane's materials. In effect, the Blackbird became the first stealth airplane; its radar cross section was significantly lower than the numbers the B-1B bomber was able to achieve more than twenty-five years later.

Skunkworks was one plant in Burbank California. Kelly Johnson, was the ceo of Lockheed Martin. Skunkworks was always Lockheed Martin. It’s name came from the awful smells coming from chemicals used to manufacture airplanes there.

Just Awesome. The BlackBird family of air craft really changed what was possible compared to what was already in use. It's still amazing that The Skunk Works was able to do all of this without computers. The look of the BlackBirds would make you fearful that it could cause you bodily harm.

Shells companies were created in order to procure the metal. Once the metal was obtained, it was used to make the SR-71 which then would surveil the USSR

USSR considered making MiG-25 out of Titanium, but USSR didn’t have industrial resources to work on titanium at that time. So they settled on stainless steel, which limited sustained speed to ~3000 kmph
As far as i know the US did not have the industrial capacity either before building the plane ! The industry was shaped around it.
If i remember correctly: The A-12/SR-71 was not primarily a stealth aircraft. It just went really far upp and really fast so that if missiles were launched against them they could outrun and outclimb them. The stealth was a byproduct of the kind of aerodynamic shapes that were necessary for the plane to reach it’s speed at al. The first proper stealth plane that the skunkworks made for stealth purposes was the F-117.

The fuel was also used as coolant for the whole aircraft. Thats also why the fuel was very hard to ignite called volatility

Tell you what: Kelly Johnson DFA (Doesn't Mess Around). Back in the 90s, on Fathers Day, I was living off the end of the runway at Dobbins AFB in Marietta, GA. I saw TWO SR-71s taking off side-by-side with flames shooting a GOOD distance out the back of those JT11D-20s (Gotta love a P&W axial flow turbojet!). What a sight! Then I noticed they started flying this sled-shaped, trapezoidal thing only at night. No discernible wings. I went down to the cafeteria one day and struck up a conversation with a couple of airmen. I asked them about the flying trapezoid. They looked at each other and then at me and one of them said "That's classified. We can't talk about that." I asked if it was the Aurora project. Then he says "Where did you hear about that?" and I showed them the Popular Mechanics magazine with the Aurora on the front cover. They both said, in unison, "We can't talk about that." And that was that. But it was a fun little encounter.
I don't believe you. Those are trained airforce personnel and if they had clearance to know about such a project? they would have the training not to confirm it exists by saying "that's classified". They would of said "don't know what you're talking about". For, A, Fact. (And in addition - if there was a real classified aircraft on the front of Popular Mechanics? everybody would of been briefed about the leak well in advance - and thus would have been well ahead of you with a sentence like "haha, you read that crap in Popular Mechanics? trust me kid, there's no such thing" - because they're not idiots, as you imply)

2:44 the king fish looks remarkably stealth for the time ;) also i think there is an interview with ben richards stating that the king fish was never really in the contest but was more a measure to make sure kelly took stealth seriously. also only the a12 had the sawtooth chines. the sr71 was a simpler design.

Actually, it's mach 3.5 for 90 minutes. which is the plane's maximum range when topped off at 30-35,000 ft altitude, 4000mi (6600km) (less when not topped off at altitude, both because of the fuel cost of slow speed ascent to operating altitude, and the leaking of the fuel at room temperature). It's designed to fly at it's maximum speed "all of the time" except when ascending and descending for takeoff/landing in thicker atmo. The other version (F-12A) had a bit less fuel and range, but was a bit faster still. It had 4 nuclear tipped Falcon missiles. It had interceptor, deep strike, and ABM roles. It was too costly to operate on a large scale, but had some 'operational' time, and influenced the ABM treaty.

I just wish the production value was a bit better on these. This is aiming at sort of a highly produced documentary level, usually staffed by a team of hundreds, say as a headline feature on HBO or Netflix.
I feel like Subject Zero being a one man band wouldn’t be so constrained as those larger productions would be. I’m kind of hoping his next piece will perhaps be considered by critics as the magnum opus of what the moving image science is capable of achieving.
I mean, are my expectations really that unrealistic?
