Nice video as always!
excellent
Great video! Helpful tips for everyone to enjoy...
You never fail to make me go to do some research on something I see in your tanks. I must admit I really like those rhinos !
+Russell Beach Those were imported as Rhinogobious henchuensis, but I still need to work on confirming the id.
thank you so much for this series. I just received 6 koi angelfish in the mail, and I crossed my fingers and followed your advice of getting them in their QT. three days later and all are still doing well.
+Emilio Maldonado Glad to hear it!
I'm new to the hobby, and only have three tanks set up at the moment. Your videos are one of the reasons I really want to learn as much as I can about the science of fish keeping, but more importantly (especially in this video) the time and care you take with all of the fish and inverts you receive, are why all of my future purchases will be with you. Thanks for all of the hard work.
+Scott Hall that makes it all worthwhile. Thanks!
really liked this video and seeing a lot of your fish at once maybe you could do a fish room tour one day
Working on it. I shot 30 minutes of video.......with the mic off :/
Well I appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos. I look forward to them all.
i have a lot to learn on actually SHOOTING the videos hahahaha. I am trying!
cool
Diggin the quarantine videos Rachel! Quality advice, and great commentary.
Great video Rachel!!
I love to see what you have in stock. Beautiful fish!!!
You have taught me that buying from someone like you is so much better than going to a big chain store. You take the time to watch and treat which is so important. I can't wait to move this summer and set up my tank again so I can stock it with all your little treasures! I will never buy from big chains again! You have the coolest nano species ever! Can't Wait!
+Kathleen Coronado Big box stores can be ok too, especially if you know what to look for in fish health :) Most of those stores are only as good as their employees, some of which are fantastic, some of which are decidedly not.
you should do a spotlight on those loaches
+Kody Dryden-Conway I plan on it! They are seriously cool!
great I might buy some after the spotlight
I have not kept them before, so they may get a prolonged "qt", just so I can learn about them. I got them to add to the 150g and am already in love with them after only a few days.
nice it's always better to be safe than sorry and they will look great in there
There is a good species to do one day if you havent already. Diptails or some other pencilfish like beckfordi.
+Kosin Trouble In The Tank I am planning on a diptail spotlight. I did Nannostomus mortenthaleri a few weeks ago. I love pencils.
I agree, I just picked up 14 of the auratus for my apisto tank. I had trouble finding that name, but I believe its just a different name for the diptail or Nannostomus eques. If i am wrong, please let me know. Thanks
that is correct, auratus is just an outdated name for them :)
I have my own nicknames for all the fish you have, but i absolutely love how awesome you are with remembering each species and love how you emphasize when saying it,makes me remember some but dont think ill get to know them all like you do... Love your channel !!!
truly amazing thanks
Rachel, you totally just turned onto Dario Dario! I have a 75 gallon with 5 Angelfish in it with a handful of Neon Tetras. Do you think the DD would work out in that tank? Thanks for your awesome videos. Ink The Planet!!
+Chronic Pain and Aquariums With Belou Waters Man, I wish I could say they would work. Angels would probably be a really bad idea, as the darios are under 1" at max size, and adult angels could easily take them out :(
+Rachel O'leary Thanks so much...time to buy another tank!!
fantastic video very informative and i have never seen some of these loaches and rasbora before so hope you do a species video on them .. keep up the great work
species spotlight on the loaches plz. every time i watch your videos i see a new fish i NEED
How do you treat various diseases such as ich?
nice video rachael, love them dario dario, my 5 are doing great!
Did you get any female dario dario?
Every day water change !! It is waste water ??
Hi, great video. it would be appreciated if you could make a Dario dario species spotlight
have you ever had a disaster? I once lost my entire group of aulonacara cichlids and it was like one after the other, turns out it was Gill flukes but when I finally found out it was too late, I never suspect the gills? I thought bloat ,viral, something internal... observation every day is so important!✌️ thanks Rachel!
my watching of this video was somewhat ironically well timed, seeing as I have 10 Ember Tetras coming later this week (from you, actually). Good information overall.
How long will the dario dario be held in QT?
+ShelbyRae Lane probably ready for next week barring surprises
I know you have a massive amount of tanks. Overall. How many tanks do you have? Also how many of those are quarantine tanks?
+Michael Agostino I promised myself I would never have more than 50 tanks, which I hit over 5 years (and 4 racks) ago so I quit counting then. I know I am at about 4000 gallons in the basement, plus my ponds and bins which are outdoors and equal another few thousand gallons. The vast majority of the tanks can be used for quarantine. I have the 220g which is my big boys, a 75g with my mascot Oscar (Captain Crankypants, he will be featured at some point), my 150g hillstream, and then a whole passle of hoarded hypancistrus and dwarf cichlids as wellas my little aquascaped nano. I would say maybe 15 or so of the tanks in the fishroom are MY tanks, and more of display tanks, the rest are all sale tanks (though I tend to be a horrendous fish hoarder, so that varies by season). My goal is raise enough money to put in an actual fish house on my property so I can triple the amount of tanks I have, as well as focus more on breeding efforts.
Are there Cobitis species in the US shops?
I´m keeping and breeding this fish since 2002.
Is a very interesting fish always associated with some kinds of soil in the wild. They can live a lot of years but without this soils they don't do really well long term. They simply need it.
+Carlos Díez not really available commonly at all.
That was what I thought. I hope you enjoy them for a long time and inspire to the people about keeping them, and the necessity of protect this kind of fish in the nature. Great species with great threats in their natural habitat.
+Carlos Díez that is exactly which I am interested in them!
Great! Not many people look at these little wonders.
If someday you need any advice about their breeding or somewhat please feel free to ask and I will answer you the best way I can.
Hey Rachel, I am moving across the country (driving Ohio to Arizona). Do you have any advice for getting the fish there safely? Would you recommend shipping them or taking them in the car?
+Chris C. Either is fine (at least in the car you have an idea of how they are handled, and the temperatures maintained). I would probably bag them as for shipping, and package them carefully with plenty of packing materials (newspaper, etc) to cushion them. If its larger fish, sometimes buckets or coolers with battery powered airpumps or better, but most smaller/community fishes do just fine being bagged for a trip. If you can, pick up some polyfilter (not polyfill) and add a tiny piece to each bag, which will help absorb ammonia for the duration. Make sure to do 1/3 water to 2/3 air. Good luck on the move!
Sounds like a plan! Thanks Rachel, you're awesome!
i have a question. i have a yoyo loach and an iridescent shark togeather they have been for a few years now and they get along great! the yoyo loach loves chasing the shark around. i was just wondering what kinda setup i should have for them since they are 2 diffrent kinds of setups.
Hi Rachel
I'm currently suffering a nasty outbreak of Columnaris. All my fish are small species and they are suffering heavy losses. Any tips?
+Stuart Willoughby I am sorry to hear it! That is a nasty one, I would treat it with a gram negative antibiotic and some salt, making sure you keep temp below 76 if possible and kicking up the aeration. Also make sureyou are keeping that tank PRISTINE, removing all detritus and really getting rid of dissolved organics. You could also try a food medicated with antibiotics (oxytretracycline) if the fish are still eating.
+Rachel O'leary Thanks for the info. I'm currently running two powerful filters and the water is pristine. I'm doing 30% water changes every few days. Dead fish are removed immediately. I've also got an airstone running 24/7. I'd honestly sit there blowing bubbles into the tank with a straw if I thought it'd help. The tank temp is 24C/75F. Regarding antibiotics, I'm on the 4th day of treatment using Esha2000 (ingredients: 6.3mg Ethacridine lactate, 3.2mg Copper ++, 0.26mg Methyl orange, 1mg Proflavin). I'm doubtful though that any of those ingredients will be very useful against a gram-negative bacteria. I've also salted the tank to 3g/L. Unfortunately we can't get oxytretracycline flake food here in the UK. Do you recommend any particular non-oral gram negative antibiotic? I'll have a look and see if it's available over here. Thanks.
+Rachel O'leary And I should say, this is all due to the fact I didn't quarantine six Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish I bought. Now looks like my stupidity will result in a total tank wipe out. As they say, you never think it'll happen to you...until it does.
+Stuart Willoughby Furan 2 or Kanamycin work. You could also do a methylene blue bath if you can get it (short duration, like 30 minutes in separate container- for really stubborn cases)- the two antibiotics I mentioned CAN be used in conjunction with methylene blue, but not with other meds.
+Stuart Willoughby if you can feed live Foods, as it will help bolster their immunity as well
Those Ruby Tetras look like they're a directional schooler with how they acted in that short clip. Now I completely understand why you have so little time and why it's important to schedule an appointment if I were in the area and wanted to stop by. Probably won't happen until the summer if it does, and I'll let you know so I can schedule a drop-in.
How would you recommend QT clams collected from a river? Do you know anything of their diseases or things? I know I'll be putting them in their own tank tomorrow (kind of already in the display for the night in a separate container, as I didn't want an ammonia build up in their small container and didn't have the time or energy to get them in QT) and observing them, making sure they're eating and filtering the water as well as digesting waste and all. Just wondering what (if anything) I should be on the lookout for in my display (don't think one night will be a huge deal, as they were in another tank for two weeks post-collecting with no issues) and in the clams themselves while in QT. Thanks for all the help, and if nothing else I'll look into this on the University of Florida's website you provided last time I asked about a disease :) Keep up the great work with these vids, as I'm constantly learning new stuff (and trust me, I know a LOT about our hobby) which I enjoy :D
+Jacob “GreenGo” Green I woudl likely just keep them on their own for a month. I don't know a whole lot about clams, in all honesty. Get a green water culture going to feed them, though!
