- Nanny Teenie makes traditional, hand-squished southern biscuits from scratch. Complete with stories and remembrances. Hosted by Phyllis.
I absolutely loved watching this! I took me back to my Granny Inez using this same method in her SC country kitchen. I honestly had to google Ms Teenie only to find that she had gone to her heavenly home. So sorry for you and your husband’s loss. I know she is still missed. Precious memories.
This is the same technique my Grandma used to make biscuits! I'm so glad you shared this video brings back wonderful memories!
Thank you, for sharing the video and recipes. Amazing video with such beautiful memories ❤️❤️❤️
This is exactly how my Mama makes biscuits and her mama before her. I've never seen anyone else do it this same way. My Mama always has her big flour bowl and always has her three finger prints on them. One of my favorite pictures is of my daughter around 4 years old sitting on the counter top helping my Mama make her biscuits. I'm from Spartanburg SC and I enjoy all of your videos.
Lisa Austin Thanks Lisa! It is funny how something so simple can bring such happiness!

OHHH this brings back so many memories of when my grandmother used to do biscuits the same way.
I love it! I can make those biscuits too! I can almost taste them.
Great video. I'm a southerner living in OH, so it was nice to hear her wonderful old accent. Thanks for putting this together. I wish I'd done something similar with my sweet old grandmother.
I love this video. This is exactly how my Grandma Pete used to make biscuits. No matter how hard I try, I could never come close to her magic touch when it comes to making the best biscuits I ever had
Those are ''OLE FASHIONED SKILLS" the best kind...
Good Job Mom.... NY NY.
I'm not sure about substituting butter for shortening, but I would certainly give it a try. Just make sure the butter is cold. I would cut it into cubes.
We used 12 cups of self rising flour. If you use all-purpose flour, you must add baking powder and salt or the biscuits won't rise. The biscuits won't use the 12 cups of flour, but you need a substantial amount in order to work the dough.
I'm not sure where you are, but most places have some variety of shortening or lard.
Priceless!!!
This is Nanny Teenie's Recipe taken from the video. She and I made the video to share with our family, but it seems to be popular. Watch the video to learn the techniques.
After making the biscuits, re-sift your flour, put the lid on your container and save it for the next time. You can just save it in a Ziploc bag if you don't have room to store a large bowl of flour. You'll also re-sift the flour again before you start your next batch of biscuits.
Try it!
awesome is nannie still with us... I sure hope so. I can make these...
Enjoyed watching this video..Reminds me of how my Maw-Maw used to make biscuits.
Marsha Gray Moms and Grandmothers have so much to teach us if only we will listen or sometimes, just observe! I am so thankful for those that taught me.
Crisco is a solid vegetable shortening. By solid I mean you can scoop it up, but it is soft enough that you can squish it in your fingers.
Nanny Teenie is alive and well. She is now 73 and still making biscuits but not every day.
Now that's how you make biscuits! My Mom taught me the same way! Great idea to film this so it can be passed on to future generations! With our society of immediate gratification, great skills like this could be lost! It's a true art form! :)
Well, Nanny Teenie makes this look so easy, but having just fixed my FIRST biscuits yesterday, which would give Ellie Mae Clampett a run for her money, I know it's not quite as easy as it looks -- ha! That being said, I REALLY appreciate the tips that you've provided along the way, and I loved watching the entire process. Thanks, Annette
Annette, it takes a while to get the feel of the dough. Keep trying!

Won’t the remnants of crisco cause the flour to go rancid after awhile?
diane sanzone Nanny made fresh biscuits almost every day. We started with fresh flour on this day. When she made a small amount, as soon as she got the pan in the oven, she scooped up the flour into her sifter to get the wet bits and Crisco out. She also always sifted part of it before she started so that would get any bits out.
@ScrewAttackEurope Crisco is a solid form of vegetable shortening. You can Google Crisco equivalent for whatever country and find out what it is called in different countries. You can also Google vegetable shortening.
Is Crisco a whipped shortening?
Love this! Thank you so much for sharing! I’m going to try this next. I love your videos! This is how I love to cook. I’ve tried the fried chicken, gravy, chicken pie and cornbread. All of these are definitely keepers.
Angel Mabe thank you Angel! I do love to share!💕
older people are so interesting.
my wife is 63 and she makes biscuits the same way, even has the same Tupperware bowl . she said it was a art to make them like this,
This is how my Mom made it every Sunday. In a bow just like this with Crisco only. They're the best things on Earth.
I looked for a Tupperware bowl like this just recently and couldn’t find one🙁. It is definitely an art!
It is truly an art! With my Mother-in-law being such an expert, I was intimidated for years, but since I broke it down and measured it all out, I can do it too!
o my goodness - she makes this look so easy - and YES it is definatly an art!! im trying this for the first time - im getting ready to put them in the oven - im hoping for the best!!! i do have a question though how do u know if u need to add an ingredient - like i think i need to ad more lard but i dont know how to tell if i needed to ad more-
@divagirl1234567890 YES! Crisco is just a brand name, but any vegetable shortening will do.
Southern Biscuits-
12 cups self-rising flour, sifted
3/4 cup Crisco
1 1/2 cups Buttermilk
Make a well in center of flour. Put buttermilk and Crisco in well and start squishing. As you combine the Crisco and buttermilk work a little flour into the mixture. You want the dough to feel light, but not wet. You'll probably use 2-21/2 cups flour. Pinch off little bits of dough and roll around in flour. Put biscuits on greased baking sheet. Press lightly. Bake @475' for 20-25 minutes or until browned.
Look at the amount of flour u posted to use. It says 12 cups
What do u do with the rest of the leftover flour if only 2- 2 1/2 cups are actually used?
flour she did not use,was stored in the bowl for next time.
Hi all, what is crisco?
Down South = Deep Fried and Lard. They believe you can deep fry anything! This includes pickles. I have no problem with this. I
I do something like that to make mine
What is Crisco?
agreed as no ingredients no cookies or biscuits as the term is but yeah good work
can u use vegetable shortening instead of crisco
Same way my mom did it ...
Ken, it's funny how most Mom's used that same technique! Hope it brings you some sweet memories!
Nannie is a sweet little lady. I can see that this recipe came straight from the slaves 😋🤣🤣🤣
i just go to kfc and buy biscutes
lol troll
srry to say this but wouldnt it be dam funny it the famliy dog dragged his ass across the floor
Terrible camera work. Too much focus on the women talking and too little on the process.
This video was originally made for our family since Nanny could never explain to anyone how to make her biscuits. As different ones asked to see it, we made it public for anyone to see. That's why we took the time to tell stories and chat. Nanny is 80 now. What I wouldn't give to have a video with my Mom.
