It's always felt like to me, if the Mario Bros were to rescue someone, Mario would be the one to handle the problem right away, and Luigi would be the one to make sure you're okay and give you a cookie and a hug before joining his brother. Both are needed, but one is more warm and personal.
Luigi is definitely the bravest character in the series. Bravery isn't the absence of fear, but the ability to push through IN SPITE of fear. Luigi is afraid of almost everything, yet that fear doesn't paralyze him. He always pushes through.
He's *equally* afraid of everything. He has the same response to seeing a mouse scurry across the kitchen floor as coming face-to-face with a Kaiju, which means he's too cowardly to be cowered by anything.
I think the special part about Mario and Luigi's relationship is that despite all of the "player 2" jokes, Mario himself always gives his brother props in the games where Luigi is integral or a lead. Luigi's Mansion 2 has him telling Luigi, that "Luigi is number 1." And in the Mario and Luigi games, while everyone else dumps on Luigi, Mario never does and always encourages him.

Whenever I see Luigi's high HP and Defense in Mario & Luigi, I always think that he's determined to keep Mario safe, willing to take a hit or two for him so he can land his stronger attacks. The thought is really sold in Dream Team, where he'll buff Mario while in the dream world, and will even go giant in certain cases, even if the first three transformations occurred while he was cowering in fear,.The last two transformations show that, when his brother is in danger, he's willing to do anything to keep him safe, even if it means fighting the guardian of dreams and giant Bowser, while Mario, now weaker than his brother, cheers him on and even helps Luigi perform either a healing move or a spin jump, while also steering the finishing move (literally).
Growing up as a younger brother, always stuck with the crappier controller and the "2P" over my head just because my older brother said so, Luigi is and always will be my favorite Mario character of all time. This dude reminded me that it was okay to be second place, and even now that I'm much older and that hierarchy of brotherhood means nothing like it used to, he's just an all-round more interesting character to me than Mario ever could be. I loved this video, Ghost, fantastic work and I hope things get better for you soon my man
The ending of Luigi's Mansion actually got to me enough as a kid to make me choke up thinking about the relationship I had with my own brother. It's such a perfect character moment, borderline masterpiece, if it was in a film it'd win an oscar. Charles Martinet's actual best voice acting, he laughs and cries and it just wraps so much about him up into a succinct moment--and his only line of dialogue is saying "oh, Mario" with relief and love and exhaustion. It's not a good cutscene, it's utterly beautiful and it's only like 15 seconds.
This video is so endearing man. This reminded me of a comic I saw on twitter a few days ago. It depicted Luigi just chilling at the mario brothers' house while taking care of things there (the laundry, the garden and so on). It is infered that Mario is on another adventure for the day; showed through a dinner plate made by Luigi, ready for Mario when he gets back. I think that comic shows one of the points of the video. Luigi is no action hero, he knows Mario is more than capable of handling things by himself. But if the situation calls for it, he will step up. My personal headcanon is that Luigi preffers a more quiet life, but is still willing to help however he can whenever he is needed.
Luigi is a true hero because no matter how scared he gets, he'll always rise to the occasion. True courage is doing the right thing, even if you're afraid to do it.
Luigi has been one of my favorite characters in fiction. By the same token, Luigi and Daisy is my favorite fictional relationship of all time! Excellent work, dude!
Luigis Mansion really solidified Luigi as my favorite Mario character, seeing him in his own game and overcoming the nightmarish obstacles was just perfect
I'm pretty sure the best compassion for LOTR isn't Aragorn and Boromir for them but Boromir and Faramir, with Boromir being favoured by everyone and seen as the golden boy of Gondor while his little brother being seen as a problem child who has a lot of good qualities but isn't seen by the public or his family as being the best son.
Luigi as a hero reminds me of this quote from Skyrim: What is better? To be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?” ~ Paarthurnax, Skyrim despite being afraid, he always steps up. He overcomes, which in my opinion makes him a better hero than Mario.
I so want to see a remake of Super Mario Land in wich it is actually revealed that Luigi needed to assume the role of his brother because maby idk in Super Mario Brothers 2 it turns out Mario has fallen under a sleeping spell and can't wske up or something. Mario recives a letter from Sarasaland that Bowser is there and has kidnapped Princess Daisy but since he is unavailable and Luigi can't let the poor people of Sarasaland suffer and ruin his brothers reputation he gears up in disguise and goes himself. (It could even be that he acts a bit less cowardly given that he needs to represent his brother) In a secret endcredits scene than it could be revealed that Princess Daisy was invited by Princess Peach to negociate a treaty and in the talks the mention of Mario as a savious comes up. Talking to her and maby seeing the two Brothers when she left the castle after official buisness Princess Daisy puts two and two togheter and thanks Luigi properly with a little kiss on the cheek. Ok maby it's a bit to much but I can dream damn it.
The way I see it, with Mario it's because he's been the hero so long that it's just his default state. With Luigi he has to push past his fears, insecurities, and doubts to accomplish just as much. But as long as it helps the red jumpmanor his friends, he will go through fire, flames and horror to see things through.
Luigi perfectly embodies the quote "True courage is not the absence of fear, but the choice to act in spite of it." I've always found him more interesting than Mario, I DO ship him with Daisy, and the scene in the movie where he proudly talks about getting a call from their mother about the commercial was adorable.
If you look into the lore for the Canon games, Peach never really pairs up with Mario. Iirc, they go on a single date, and Peach decided Mario wasn't her type, so Mario went off to another kingdom to do his thing, where he met Daisy and hooked up with her. That history also lends credence to the fan theory that Rosalina is actually Peach and Luigi's daughter from the future, based on her story as told in that little picture book.
Not to mention the sheer emotion Luigi expresses when his brother pops out of the machine in LM1, he shudders speechlessly and weeps. This is the true mark of his character. It doesn’t matter how terrified he is, he motivates himself with the things that truly matter to him.
There's definitely an argument that mario & Luigi are comparable to aragorn & borimir. But honestly I'd argue that there more comparable to frodo & sam. Mainly in there places in the series & personalities. While everyone knows frodos place in the series as the ring bearer & main character driving the story to its completion. Sam is right along side him. Growing braver and braver as time goes on. He went from a hobbit scared of taking the furthest step from home that he's ever been to the one carrying frodo up the burning hot path leading to the entrance to Mount doom. And honestly I believe he's more well loved because of it. Sam was a humble man who just wanted to be happy. He didn't mind being number two on the journey. And those are some of the best qualities I find in both Luigi & Sam.
The "look at the socks" part made me realize.. that I just found Waldo. That's what Luigi is, the character that is psychologically hidden from our view as we focus on either the gameplay or on Mario.
Luigi is the comic relief hero to his brother the straight line hero I really enjoy that his actual first major hero role was in a children horror comedy game
I love when we get to see Mario and Luigi interact with each other; it's always just so sweet! Maybe we will get more Mario & Luigi RPGs someday because they are my absolute favourites. Luigi will always be a favourite character being this cowardly but lovable guy who nevertheless bravely soldiers on when everyone is depending on him. I do hope Mario gets more chances to develop characterisation like his younger bro beyond being the default hero (he's getting there slowly). 😊 (P.S The one weird thing about Luigi is how his voice was just so all over the place in the N64 era. His Mario Party voice is...something else.)
I like to think that Mario and Peach are a more traditional relationship, like how Mario and Peach represent traditional heroes and damsels/heroines. Luigi and Daisy, by comparison, are a bit deeper, a bit more nuanced, like the green man himself. It'd be interesting to see a DK Heropedia as we could see him go from curmudgeon ape tangling with Mario to laid back 90's man in the DK Country games to what he is now. I hope you get the chance to make it and take a real look at Nintendo's masterful monke. A duo in a similar vein to Mario and Luigi, to me, is Tintin and Captain Barnacle. It's a very similar look at the intrepid hero and their all-too-human sidekick. Not sure if that's more nerdy than the lord of the rings comparison or not
This video put a lot of perspective in my life. I had a brother whose name was also Mario, he was three years older than me and he passed away a few years ago. When we were kids and we played any game, I used to be the second player since he was the older. That means I was always Luigi, so over the years I became accustomed to be the second controller, and ever since I always choose Luigi has my player in any game where he is playable. I truly understand why Luigi is the way he is, his older brother is always there to help and protect him. Thanks for the memories!! Really loved the video 🥲
I always imagined Mario and Peach as the popular football star and cheer captain in high school. They do like each other but on a certain level they are only dating because they the two most popular kids in school. Luigi and Daisy are like the two nerds in band class that aren’t super romantic but are very friendly. In fact if you could confuse them for brother and sister if you didn’t know they were dating.
me and my sister agree with each other, since in Mario canon the Mario games exist, that Mario is actually player 2 and Luigi is player 1. They are of course playing as their favorite character. Each other.
ngl I feel like Luigi's character would be better if he didn't date Daisy, he *doesn't* need the have Peach but different. I think them being BFFs would add more cool relationship ideas for them
I've always enjoyed Luigi, because growing up I was the little brother and player 2. I like others more, like Donkey Kong (DKC was a huge part of my childhood), but Luigi will always be special to me. I always enjoy when he gets to shine.
I'd love to see you do a Heropedia video on Hat Kid from A Hat in Time. Though if it was my own descriptor of what I believe she is, is that she is a very strong embodiment of a Chaotic Neutral Child/Young Protagonist. In more layman's terms she is a very Smug Anti-Hero type who is just as likely to help you and be your best friend, as she is to beat you up, cause unintentional havoc or kick you off a cliff while giggling.
# 001 If they ever do a scene in the upcoming Mario Movie where Luigi wins in a situation by doing absolutely nothing, he will have achieved PEAK greatness! I'm saying this unironically.
Even though I grew apart from Nintendo over the years, Luigi has always been in my top 5 next to Bayonetta, Rouge, Raziel and Zidane. Being second best means you have the gold star personality.
The Mario party team names give me the vibe that while Mario and Peach are the sensationalized it couple in the spotlight with all the hype and drama around them, Luigi and Daisy are in an actual healthy steady relationship in the background and feel no need to broadcast it
Luigi really is among the leagues of Artorias, Sgt. Johnson, etc. Artorias is a great warrior who plunged into the scariest place in Dark Souls lore to save people. Just like Luigi. Sgt. Johnson is voiced by David Scully. Luigi should be voiced by David Scully.
Mario has a mustache because they couldn't design a mouth, a hat because they couldn't design hair and overalls to differentiate arms from the torso. Everything iconic about Mario and Luigi was completely by accident and technical restraints at the time
Is it just me, or does Waluigi just scream, that bad guy that became a good guy, that could still go back any time, so they keep you on your toes? You know, like Vegeta, or Dinobot from Beast Wars, if you remember that. Bitter, angry, egotistical, powerful, but when push comes to shove, usually ends up siding with the good guys. Those characters that test the faith of the good guys.
Excellent use of the Melee opening theme aka the best video game theme of all time! Luigi is my fav as well. Also obligatory R* character mention: Edgar Ross
It might be sad to say but Daisy started out as a sweetheart for Mario....but honestly I think it is about time to change history and make a modern remake of Super Mario Land called Super Luigi Land or maby Luigi in Sarasa Land or something and say that it was never Mario but actually Luigi who saved Princess Daisy..... or maby make it a plot twist at the end where Sarasa Land heared of this legendary hero of Moshroom Kingdom called Mario but he was sick or something and as the good little brother and person he is Luigi didn't want to see Marios reputation fall or leave the Kingdom of Sarada Land in their perill so he dawns Marios clothes and saves the Kingdom instead. Later on when Princess Daisy comes to a visit to the Moshroom Kingdom she sees the real Mario for the first time wanting to thank him for his actions but sees how short he is and Luigi is also there and she sees how tall he is. She puts 2 and 2 togheter and finally understands who the real hero of the Kingdom of Serasa Land is. Thous finding it very sweet of Luigi to have gone through so much trouble for his brother and to save her. And that is were their actual romance started.
I think one of Luigi‘s core character traits is that of the guy who is deeply scared but is also profoundly brave like Usopp from one piece or Eduardo from fosters home for imaginary friends they are deeply afraid of danger but show true courage in dangerous situations because they care so much about their loved ones
Mario is a hero because he projects an image of unflappable confidnece. Luigi is a bigger hero becasue he can't hide how scared he is, but he still does the right thing anyway.
Luigi ain't a coward; cowardice implies running from fear. Luigi might run sometimes, but he always faces his fear. That is called courage. A scared-y cat? Yes. A coward. NO.
You make good videos man. Always some interesting angle in there that makes me think a little deeper about the character and what they could be representing
It might be the fact that I'm in my early thirties but I'm actually pumped for the Mario movie. I like the choices of voice actors. I feel like it'd be super annoying to hear that awful fake italian accent for anything over 5 mins and I like the idea of them going back to their Brooklyn origins for a change.
You calling Luigi the "jester" of his universe and bringing up your logo it made me wonder if you are a fan of Cicero of Skyrim and then it made me think you have NPCpedias now but have you ever considered a "Companionpedia"? Could be a really fun concept.
Luigi doesn't sit in Mario's shadow, he willing watches from the sidelines. Because Luigi know what it takes to be a winner, what he must do to get there... Nothing.
Every time you said twins I pondered how technically accurate that is 🤔 I never thought of them as twins but then again, Luigi was literally a clone at first...

The Mario party team names give me the vibe that while Mario and Peach are the sensationalized it couple in the spotlight with all the hype and drama around them, Luigi and Daisy are in an actual healthy steady relationship in the background and feel no need to broadcast it
Mario the plumber was originally Jumpman the Carpenter.
The G O A T
Greenest Of All Time
L is real
Mario is missing is the best game ever.
I don't know why but this video made me cry. It probably is because I'm the younger brother and seeing the love for player 2 is nice to hear
Remember when Game Theory claimed Mario hated Luigi because... Mario playfully squashed Luigi's foot for a second one time?
Link's best bud, and Mario's backup.
I'd love to see more Mario games focused solely on Luigi, dude deserves more games where he is the star.
Would donkey kong be a hero or villain pedia?
I think we can all agree that the Mario series wouldn't be the same if Lugi was removed from it.
Luigi and the Arbiter taught me player 2 is still cool
Luigi is my favourite character of all time. I love him so much
5:34 Killed me with that casual line about racially unbalanced media coverage 😅
Old Luigi sounds like Italian Yogi Bear.
Finally , a UA-cam Video actually made with love , and with very noticeable high quality. Good job!
Luigi ain't a coward; cowardice implies running from fear. Luigi might run sometimes, but he always faces his fear. That is called courage. A scared-y cat? Yes. A coward. NO.
Luigi vs Kratos.
He runs to fight again, He fights to run away...
You make good videos man. Always some interesting angle in there that makes me think a little deeper about the character and what they could be representing
My eyes: hey, Luigi's here
My brain: ye, Waaaluigi
When I was a kid, my uncle told me Luigi was French.
Side note:
Luigi would beat Artorius the abyss Walker because Luigi has a mustache.
My favorite Nintendo characters are of course me Wario & my brother Waluigi.
Exactly! Give Pratt a chance!
Highly Advanced and "Military grade" aren't two phrases that are as cool IRL when come to technology vs in TV, movies, books, or video games
You calling Luigi the "jester" of his universe and bringing up your logo it made me wonder if you are a fan of Cicero of Skyrim and then it made me think you have NPCpedias now but have you ever considered a "Companionpedia"? Could be a really fun concept.
13:00 my Brin when I try to study
luigi lore : forgot that the leftover pizza was in the fridge for a week
Luigi doesn't sit in Mario's shadow, he willing watches from the sidelines. Because Luigi know what it takes to be a winner, what he must do to get there...
Nothing.
Need a game in which Luigi and Daisy work together to overcome Waluigi and whatever that alien dude from Super Mario Land was called.
Every time you said twins I pondered how technically accurate that is 🤔 I never thought of them as twins but then again, Luigi was literally a clone at first...
Luigi started out as a Clone then grew into a man of his own.
7:57 - I was like "Why is Miamoto writing sperm next to his drawing?" but I realized it says superm but the "u" is strangely small.
1. I am so thrilled the know that a commercial spoofed the "Car 54 Where Are You?" theme song XD.
2. Watching Mr. Martinet doing the voices is an absolute delight.
3. I appreciate all the fun trivia and highlights for Luigi that I had never seen before. Thank you kindly!
Maaan this channel remains underrated.
4:07 that's Hiroshi Yamauchi, not Fusajirō Yamauchi
Always have been and will be a Luigi man. Even when im P1. Cause Luigi always seemed the more human and compassionate between the two, and rose to what he is all on his own, in his own right.
Luigi is my favorite Mario character I ever had 🙂💚
Heropedia sounds like a disease an old person would have or like it would be in a ad mesothelioma
I'm sorry but you messed up really bad here, everyone knows Luigi needs a Villainpedia entry.
