When I hear people mentioning how great the music in a game is, I have to think of an old interview with Yamaoka Akira (early 2000s; have a guess which game...) who said something like: It's not hard to compose music for a scene. The hard part is to decide, when to NOT add any music.

So glad you mentioned the soundtrack! The importance of audio design & music in games is highly underrated imo, but a sweeping soundtrack can make the difference between a boring deserty wasteland and a sandbox of adventure!
I haven't finished this video yet, but I saw your comment and remembered that most of the music in Red Dead Revolver was taken from actual westerns. One of the songs is from a movie called "They Call me Trinity" and the opening scene with the song used in RDR is on UA-cam.
I was one of those that paid absolutely no attention to the soundtrack of videogames. I mean sure I'd lightly bop my head or get more into the game if a track hit home, but it never stuck with me how important it was until I played FFXIV. The Music of a game is as important as gameplay, graphics or the setting/story, it's not just one subcategory type of part of the game, the game's music is one of the core elements.
this game was my literal childhood. I used to play it with my dad and friends and there are parts of it that i remember vividly to this day. The opening credits, the fight with griff, the ugly gang shoot out and the weird paper boy that screams extra extra on the corner of brimstone. It was a huge part of my childhood and i have such fond memories playing the showdown mode and beating the game for the 30th time. Glad to see it get some of the love it always deserved.
I want more opinion speedruns. Not that I want condensed content, I just want to be able to hear you opinions on parts of games that might not always get talked about and that seems like a format that would hit those parts while leaving time to talk about the rest of whatever game it is.

You actually convinced me to buy this game in 2022:P I pondered on buying this game back in the day after I fell in love with Red dead redemption. But as I got the understanding that Revolver was more its own stand alone thing, only sharing the same "universe" and a few hints and nods with RDR and wasn't a prequel of any sort I ended up not doing it. Now I really want to experience this charming hidden gem for myself. It might not be the greatest work of art in video game history. But this game seems really fun and interesting for what it is, with its spaghetti western campiness. So I ordered this game for PS2 on Ebay. I'm looking forward to play and experience it for myself:D
I have to admit, I really never liked this game when I was younger. The reason was because when I first bought this game, I was expecting a game similar to Neversoft's GUN which in my opinion, was the absolute best western video game of the 6th generation as it showed the game genre that the old west works best in, an open world adventure with plenty of oppurtinities for exploration. And I figured that with the Rockstar emblem on it, Red Dead Revolver would be like GTA on horseback. So when I found out that this game was almost entirely linear with a lot of difficult and frustrating levels, I really lost interest in playing it. But now as I learn more about Red Dead Revolver, the more I understand why it is the way it is. It was originally a Capcom game that was supposed to be the 3D equivalent to Sunset Riders but development was handed off to Rockstar partway through, which would explain its linear nature. But there were portions of the game, like in the town of Brimstone that were basically an ersatz open world where you had to trigger missions by talking to people, which I'm totally convinced was an addition from Rockstar, who pioneered the open world genre at the time.
Haven't played any of the Red Dead series yet, but seriously hope you visit the stand alone game Gun in some fashion. This is a phenomenal channel, always looking forward to the next video.
@@BobXGuerra If you're a fan of GUN, skip Red Dead Revolver and instead play Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, especially RDR2. I didn't know English language that much, but still figured out all the perks and tricks in this game, unlocking the characters and having upper hand against my friends when playing against them in the versus mode. I absolutely love this game when it came out. This one and gun were phenomenal. It actually really irritates me when everyone's clamoring for a re-release and remake of the original Red Dead Redemption. I would much much rather see this game get a modern interpretation.
I remember using the bandit that throws like 20 knifes at someone. and everyone always went "he's so op". and then we all learned how easy it is to dodge the knives. and he became laughably shit.
Call of Juarez was a 360 game (7th gen) and kinda meh. Aside from Gunslinger, that franchise is pretty mediocre. The closest comparison to RDRevover is a game called Gun. It was cross-gen, but the visuals were decidedly 6th gen. Wasted potential, Neversoft developed Gun but never pursued a sequel. It had a solid foundation, future installments could've rivaled RDRedemption.
See, what I remember about this game was that it got entirely overshadowed among everyone I knew back at the time by another western game called 'Gun' that was a lot more campy and a lot weirder, but which was ironically more memorable, at least for me. It also came out in 2005, a year after RDR. I mean, I liked Red Dead Revolver. It's a good game! I just remember that Gun was the game that people remembered at the time as the 'western' game.
A bit late to the comments, but I like these retrospective reviews. You have kind of a different style/approach to these compared to someone like Liam Triforce, which is appreciated. I'd love to see more of these.
Excellent retrospective, Revolver deserves more love and attention. I love this game to death, its such a fun janky little action game. If you want to check out a (significantly more expensive secondhand, sadly) similar game that even includes some of the little suggestions you'd like to have seen in Revolver (like dress up!), check out the incredibly weird and fun Samurai Western. The title tells you everything you need to know about it.
Had a buddy who's a serious gamer now. Much more serious than me, dead ass tell me I was misremembering this game as the first RD redemption. But from about '96 to 2015 I was a hardcore no-lifer. Had all the consoles, rented tons of games every week. Would just stay up days straight playing games and going to school. Only sleeping on the 45 minutes bus ride to and from school. I'm just like, "no Google it right now. There's no way." Dude thought he had one on me since hes no-lifed all the RD Redemptions hardcore. MFer never even heard of RD Revolver! 😂😂😂
as a kid I played this game to death and to this day i have a few quotes that live rent free the first being on the first train mission before the stand off in the train if you talk to the bandit he says "what you botherin me for, sit back down." and when you go after the Mr. black the sheriff says "bring em in dead or … well dead." I'm paraphrasing a bit but yeah this game is burned in my memories.
I have *no idea* how you did it, but you basically said everything I've wanted to say about this game ever since I first played it when I was really young; in my opinion, this amazing hidden gem deserves far more recognition than it gets these days, especially given what its' successors would later do for the gaming industry as we know it today. Alongside Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Black, Halo: Combat Evolved and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, this was and still is one of my absolute favorite games from the 6th generation. (at least, out of the ones I had at the time) I forgot if it was my dad or my cousin that bought our OG Xbox many years before I got ahold of it, but either way, thanks y'all!
I remember playing this game a lot as a kid. Not because of how fun it was but because of how often my save for it was wiped. I had a memory card for my ps2 and don't know why only this game automatically wiped the save.
For better context; spaghetti westerns were filmed in Italy, using the Italian inland outdoors to simulate the American west. They were filmed en masse due to cheaper budgeting than Hollywood, thus Westerns were the 50-60’s equivalent of todays superhero media; everything, everywhere. Clint Eastwood is one of a handful of actors that started their career in Spaghetti Westerns. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is perhaps his most famous Spaghetti Western.
You should check out Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Its a first person arcadey western shoot bang with the same level of flavor and w a decent story that follows alot of those classic spaghetti beats.
I mean the only red dead redemption like game from around this time would be Neversoft's Gun, but Revolver (which I also own a copy of and play frequently on my PS2) is possibly one of the most under appreciated games that played a part in the spark of cowboy games like Redemption.
Remembered maybe, but it's place in the context of history is admittedly quite small. Plus the background stuff with Capcom, devs sleeping in closets, being sold to RS on the cheap; It doesn't exactly paint a picture of a game that anyone loved more so that it was a project in dire need of saving and that saving inspired the devs to take what they learned and apply it on a new project... or that RS (after the acquisition) was like "lol, just slap this on our open world formula and print money" as that was their MO at the time.
Great Video! You should also check out GUN from the same era if you haven't played it before. It's sort of the spiritual predecessor to Red Dead Redemption, being an open world western "GTA" and all. But it has some of that same spaghetti western campiness like Red Dead Revolver. Great villains and an awesome soundtrack. You'll love it!:D
I remembered playing this game but couldnt put the mission i remembered most until i saw the pig josh mussion at like 22:45ish and then it hit me, yeah i remember that fucking mission, i hated it! But damn this was one good game. This and Gun got me into the westerns when i was a kid. Loved these games
14:00 I mean, they all play different roles. Griff sold out the Harlows to save his own hide and for greed, Daren actually pulled the trigger and led the attack, and Diego was behind both of them. (But being a traitor is considered the worst sin so Griffon goes last)
Just throwing this out there about the Trader in Rogue Valley, you can actually save him before he gets "domed" and he'll reward you with cash (been years since I've played but I want to say it's $1,500 or so). Great video! This is one of my all-time favorite games.
I'd love to see Red Harlowe come to life in a future game. His design is too fuckin sick to not see it happen. Redemption is always about 'The End of The Old West", but Red sure as fuck could represent the height of it.

I have vague memories of playing this when I was 6 or 7. I remember when Red dead redemption came out how pissed I got that no one ever played red dead revolver. I'm playing it now for the first time in 18 years and its astonishing how well its aged.
This was my first game where I took the leap from watching my brother to playing the game, had a split screen deathmatch was tons of fun and the main story is unmatched
As much as I loved the sequels there is something special about this one. People point at the linearity and over the top themes as a critique. I see it as special and makes it it's own thing. Personally I find it the perfect western game when I get that itch. Redemption 1 and 2 are great, but you gotta be in a certain mood to dedicate time to that sort of game.
I must say that your channel overall lends itself heavily to flavor and style. You always are able to see quality in anything, and I think that both of these qualities make your channel a great fit for obscure topics. Nice video.
the multiplayer was really fun, poker card type roll the dice powerups were really good. not many games even do this today. what a joke the modern game development has become
Sir I would like to say. I LOVED this game. But that is not the epiphany you gave me. No, your comment about Skyrim and Oblivions menu has made me realize exactly why I was so enthralled and transported with Oblivion as a kid, my first 200+ hours put into one game. Skyrim had no flavor in that department. I lost touch with that game with less than 40 hours. I honestly was disappointed because I literally had been waiting so long to play it and I just didn't understand why I couldnt connect with it the way I did with Oblivion. I'm sure there are a lot more reasons, one being the blandness of the towns. And the fact that they went from "samey" Oblivion hellscapes to "samey" caves. One aspect of Elden Ring I love is that even the caves have a little variation, and the huge legacy dungeons are FIRE and remind me of good old Ocarina of Time.
When I hear people mentioning how great the music in a game is, I have to think of an old interview with Yamaoka Akira (early 2000s; have a guess which game...) who said something like: It's not hard to compose music for a scene. The hard part is to decide, when to NOT add any music.
I know this is super late, but I’m gonna guess Silent Hill 2 or 3. He was the one who made those right?

Hey Ghostcharm. I found your channel through your villianpedia series and I am now a big fan of your content. Keep up the amazing work!
11:03 Bartlett’s Journal?
Had a buddy who's a serious gamer now. Much more serious than me, dead ass tell me I was misremembering this game as the first RD redemption.
But from about '96 to 2015 I was a hardcore no-lifer. Had all the consoles, rented tons of games every week. Would just stay up days straight playing games and going to school. Only sleeping on the 45 minutes bus ride to and from school.
I'm just like, "no Google it right now. There's no way."
Dude thought he had one on me since hes no-lifed all the RD Redemptions hardcore.
33:50 Uh…Bounty Hunter Mode. It’s already a thing
Revolver always reminded me of an Anime Western, like if Cowboy Bebop was actual cowboys.
Diego mission was definitely the hardest for me I HATE that mission and it’s impossible to protect the two demo guys horrible!
(at least, out of the ones I had at the time)
I forgot if it was my dad or my cousin that bought our OG Xbox many years before I got ahold of it, but either way, thanks y'all!
Loved this game. Was great fun
Wild Wild West GTA. More like GTH
This channel is such a gem. I always love the smaller channels that I find and love to see how they grow.
15:40 “red leaves us with the coldest, most bad ass line in the history of the red dead franchise-“ “AT METRO BY T-MOBILE!”
The split screen multiplayer gave me and my brother so many amazing hours of fun our favorite character was chicken 😂
Let’s get you to 100K Ghostcharm! You deserve it!
thanks buddy!
You'll love it!:D
gun was so much better in my opinion, Gun, Bully and San Andreas were my go to games. True Crime: Streets of LA was ny fouth and a great game too.
(But being a traitor is considered the worst sin so Griffon goes last)
I wish you had way more reviews because your writing is excellent look forward to see more :)
This is such a great review, it legitimately makes me want to buy a PS2 copy of this game just to be able to play it.
Omg I LOVED revolver, was such a great game!!!
Just throwing this out there about the Trader in Rogue Valley, you can actually save him before he gets "domed" and he'll reward you with cash (been years since I've played but I want to say it's $1,500 or so).
Great video! This is one of my all-time favorite games.
I love how Red Harlow is mentioned in the Redemption games if you talk to some NPC's
I'm a fan of the rants !!! lets rant more, reminds me of 2004, was pretty good.
This man cares about artstyle more than graphics itself which is awesome.
I need the song used in the music chapter!! It’s beautiful!
My childhood best friend had this game growing up, that's the only reason I remember this. Fun times.
My brother and I used to play the multiplayer like almost daily.
i was just watching vids on this game yesterday, bravo!
I'd love to see Red Harlowe come to life in a future game. His design is too fuckin sick to not see it happen.
Redemption is always about 'The End of The Old West", but Red sure as fuck could represent the height of it.
First, Hey GhostCharm I absolutely love Red Dead Redemption 2. I play it alllll the time. It’s seriously the best game ever, so it’s really cool to see this footage. I didn’t even know about this.
Second, I love your friend Aria 😂 and I’m sad he is no longer on Instagram, so I hope you will pass this along to him. He might need to hear it.
Aria, you are a PHENOMENAL actor, seriously captivating and my favorite one on Legacies. Please don’t listen to all the negative, because you’re amazing. I will miss Landon and Legacies. Good luck to you 🍀 and I hope you rejoin social media someday for your fans, if not, get a Twitch haha. (If you don’t already have one) Anyway I know you will go far in your career and I look forward to seeing you in another project. You probably made the right decision getting rid of social media, but so many of us will miss keeping up with you. Much love.
Thanks GhostCharm 😂✌🏻
I am so happy that I found this channel so early. These videos just scratch an itch, unscratched by other creators like Anderson, Raycevik etc. Not better, just different.
Tnt?? Why couldnt it be bacon n beans?!
It definitely does deserve to be remembered. I loved playing splitscreen.
Oh man I forgot what 2004 graphics looked like but I remember the game it's amazing
John is definitely modeled after Red
I adore this game and i still ahve very fond memories of it on the PS2
The death noises in this game were truly next level.
Every time you upload I look forward to the next upload
I'm so glad this game is getting some love. Most people don't know it exists
Bro I was just looking for reviews of this game cuz I barely remember it, and boom you drop a vid, been binging your channel lately and was surprised to see this lol
Damn, now I think I need a Villainpedia on Dutch Van Der Linde
Phantom Dust gameplay! Underrated gem, amazing game if hard
LMAOOO THE "WHO?!"
Its the best part of the video
These videos give me what can only be described as depressing nostalgia
I have vague memories of playing this when I was 6 or 7. I remember when Red dead redemption came out how pissed I got that no one ever played red dead revolver. I'm playing it now for the first time in 18 years and its astonishing how well its aged.
This was my first game where I took the leap from watching my brother to playing the game, had a split screen deathmatch was tons of fun and the main story is unmatched
I love your vids my mans and your editing is great
Do a review on a game similar to this called Gun(2005).
The game's art style reminds me of Metal Gear Solid. Red looks similar to Snake from MGS3.
This game was my whole childhood, such a good experience
As much as I loved the sequels there is something special about this one. People point at the linearity and over the top themes as a critique. I see it as special and makes it it's own thing. Personally I find it the perfect western game when I get that itch. Redemption 1 and 2 are great, but you gotta be in a certain mood to dedicate time to that sort of game.
do frank horrigan frum fo2
This game is awesome when it comes to those older Western games the only on better is GUN
Would you be willing to do a video on any of the multitude of villains from the Legacy of Kain series?
RIP Funny Trader Guy and Shadow Wolf. You'll be missed
One of the best games for ps2
Alot of this reminds me of the old game gun which is a great western which anyone should check out if they haven't!
Finally someone covered this masterpiece!
one of my favourite games the Diego mission was the hardest for me it took me so long to get past it
I must say that your channel overall lends itself heavily to flavor and style.
The multiplayer in RDR was fire
I just discovered your channel and I've been binge watching all your videos your channel is awesome !
i just picked it up recently and now my favourite youtuber has a 40 minute video on it, good shit :))
