Thank you for saying this! I've always thought and preached how the black background makes photos pop but no one believed me lol =). Love that you too love the dark moody landscape shots, I always under expose too.
Yes “dark mode” does wonders for photos, and I’m right there with you on rotating your phone to enable full screen viewing of horizontal format photos (perhaps someday Instagram will hire some photographers that know a thing or two)... Personally I’d like the ability to decide on my own what color my background is. White is just to stark, black is fine for photos but it’s the reading of text that gets more difficult. When was the last time you read a book printed on black paper, there’s a reason words are typically black on white. I’d like to see a neutral grey tone made available as an alternative to stark white or the black hole.
Of course now those who have been using white borders to ensure their shots don't get auto-cropped by IG look odd against the black background. Perhaps now when trying to salvage a portrait mode shot (not shot in IG's preferred 8:10 aspect ratio) we'll all have to have three scrollable shots (the primary cropped one for IG's box preview, one uncropped with white borders, and one uncropped with black borders)...wee!
Nick, do you have any tips for maximizing image quality on IG or are you willing to share your process? There is a lot of conflicting information regarding export settings from Lightroom (size, resolution, quality, etc.) to avoid -- or minimize the effect of -- their compression algorithm. I am always disappointed with the quality of my images once on IG but yours are sharp and there is very little compression artifacts when zoomed in. Thanks!
man...look at those thumbsdown roll in... sometimes I feel like some people just subscribe so they can give a thumbs down when the see a new video come out.
Worked on my Android. Didn't need to reinstall IG. Even my keyboard is a black background as I type this message. And yes the images all look better on IG. Thanks Nick!
It really looks cool!!! and about Android system names, they changed from name them like desserts to just numbers :( sad but easy to recognize, android 10 is the last one
I,m all for the dark mode on Instagram, but i think people (none photographers) wont change it as it will change the whole phone look itself. saying that tho maybe Instagram with make it a in app feature one day.
My workflow for that is I export my finished images into a Google Drive folder, and since I have Google Drive on my phone it’s super easy to grab any photo I want from my Back catalog from my phone
@@NickPage I use AirDrop to transfer but I am lazy and would just prefer to be able to upload on my laptop while I'm posting to 500px, Flikr, Photocrowd, Viewbug and Facebook. It gets done, just extra steps.
James Johnston You can with a work around. Right click on the page using chrome. Chose inspect element. You’ll be looking for what appears to be a phone/tablet icon. Choose that. It will display the page like mobile. Now you can just upload from desktop on any computer. Sorry if that’s not a great description. UA-cam has some videos on it. Very simple :-)
My Instagram updated as ususal and when I opened it it was dark :) Very strange in the in the beginning, but I'm used to it now and I like it :) Agree with you that the photos looks so much better. I'm on Android ofcourse. Really enjoy your videos Nick, keep it up!! @bk_kjelsrud
I'm sorry, I did a recent update to ver. 9 on my Android and I cant get a location on switching on "dark". I tried Google and to no avail. I followed all the steps and nada. I guess I need to wait for ver. 10
it works with older android versions as well...if your phone has dark mode it will work no matter the version...im on android 9 pie and i was so shocked when i opend ig and it was sudenly black
Great to hear you picked up the 5 day deal.. sooo many tutorials in that bundle. I think so. for me getting my work in front of others is part of where my gratification comes from. As a creative, I like showing off what I have created, and while Instagram sucks in some respects.. it is where all the eyes are. If you just carve out your own little corner of Instagram, its a great way to connect with, and build an audience.
So Nick, as I understand it, the change only appears on phones on dark mode? So if someone is on light mode, they still see our images the way they always have?
Only works on android 10 I have Samsung Galaxy note 8 that will not go to android 10 anytime soon. So no dark mode for me sooo bumbed. Was hoping for a dark mode for so long on instagram.
Mine changed automatically after doing the update and didn't reinstall. I do find there is like twice as many ads though as you scroll down or is that just me?
For those of us using older Android devices, ie version 5.0, look up Dark Mode Theme for Instagram. Install, sign in, and viola, Dark Mode. loving it! on my iPhone, works great, once updating the iOS. wow.. even my own images look better.. LOL just hate self promotion lol
@@NickPage nothing like Facebook or Instagram. Its mostly because it's still strictly mobile and not PC that I think it hasn't gained momentum. It's a great platform though and I hope it finds a way to take off
Do you edit your night shots differently knowing they will be uploaded to IG? I recently uploaded a shot at dusk that I brightened a tooooon in Lightroom, more than I originally would have, and it still came out super dark on IG. Any suggestions? I’ll link to my pic below. Thanks!!! instagram.com/p/B3WAgxSFy-5/?igshid=1hjvvp11y78be
I will probably create a video about this.. but I export a general "for the web" Image.. then when posting to IG I used to brighten a bit.. and add some contrast and sharpening.. knowing its going to be viewed tiny and it needs less subtlety
“Dark like my soul” was said so nonchalantly hahaha.
Thank you for saying this! I've always thought and preached how the black background makes photos pop but no one believed me lol =). Love that you too love the dark moody landscape shots, I always under expose too.
I love the new dark mode it makes the images look so much better to my eyes. Great video Nick 😀👍✌
I was wondering why my Instagram was dark. I like it, dark just like my soul.
Now we, the Northern light(graphers), will be able to shine in the night, brah! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Totally agree that the dark background really makes the colors pop. I also like a darker image in my own photography, so this is awesome.
Haha love the outro music bout time you threw some of your style of music in there

Cool. And about time. Thank you for sharing this news Nick.
Back in the early days of flickr, I used to provide links to all my images on a black background. I am SO excited for this change.
You may not have to reload IG for Dark mode. I didn’t have to on my iPhone. I had it enabled, IG followed suit after a phone restart
Done! Joined the dark side and am finally where I belong. It’s so much better! 😀
Big improvement! Thanks for the tip, Nick!
Awesome. Just switched mine. Already had the option. Yes!! What a difference! Thanks!

“All my images are dark, like my soul” lmao😂 nick you’re awesome!!
Yup, I LOVE it! I run darkmode everything and my photos look so much better on darkmode too!
Sweet! I was able to do it without deleting/reinstalling. Thanks :D
Dark mode is a life saver
I totally agree with you about black back grounds and YES I hate IG too. Thank you.
Nick: COME TO THE DARK SIDE
Darkseid: IN YOUR FACE, THANOS

Ugh wish we didn’t have to have the phone on dark mode though! But totally agree every photo looks way better on black!!
"Because all my images are dark. Like my soul" 😀 Hell yeah! 😈
Whaaaaa!!!!!😯😱
I hope there will be a dark version of Whitagram out soon, too.

Yep, photos look great in Instagram in dark mode but unfortunately not calender and mail.
Ha! Did I inspire you to make this video because of my insta-comment? 😜
All pictures look waaaayyy more epic!
wonder if it will trickle down to web browsers and desktop apps?
Yes~ Metal Outro!
My only issue with Instagram is that I have to move images over to my phone or iPad to upload them. I hate extra steps.

Thanks everybody. I suppose I am fine in the end. I don't use Chrome on my MacBook, I use Safari. I will give it a try.

Bro. I just did it and WOW what a difference!
Not on instagram - yet. Is it worth the time and trouble?
Also, just bought the 5 day deal and am looking forward to your course.

I’ll take a look come over to the dark side. I to like to process darker
Oh so many Star Wars “come to the dark side” references are coming. Quick review below, yep and enjoy!
Cheers, mine looks great now.
Hi NIck, who/what was the outro on this one? I'm a big metal fan.
I don't use instagram, but I'm a huge proponent for darkmode-ing all the things.
I love the new dark mode, I didn't have to do anything though, it was automatic.
Ill be more happy if they can launch native instagram app for ipad
So Nick, as I understand it, the change only appears on phones on dark mode? So if someone is on light mode, they still see our images the way they always have?
Yep
Done

your Instagram is still white unless everyone changes over, totally looks better though
Do I really have to uninstall my Instagram? I don't want to risk losing my images.
Your images will still be there :-)
It didn’t work on my phone but was instant on my iPad.
IG is awesome. I can pay people to like my photos ( sarcasm) 🤣 Thanks for the 411!
_Invites everybody to dark mode_
Haha I am not gonna fall for it,
Before you cut my hand, are you my father?
come over to the dark size Hamza.... they all float over here...
Lol I still use Vero
Do you see much activity on there anymore?

Nick Page awesome! Thanks! Love your channel. Really great tutorials and work!
Sorry Nick., I am an IG hater... even dark mode can't get me to like it. I like to see images bigger than on a mobile. regards Al
It only gets worse with age too :(
I hear you there.. I dont love it, but getting images in front of eyes is half of the fun
