i"m from kingsville and everything you said about our way of life of hunting for meat was true back then. some of them deer just had bigger racks than others who were we to judge if we took some the better bucks. i knew fred and brian back then when rhey would come over to my place just west of ricardo and dove hunt the high fence that bordered our land next to the ranch. of course i had to help the ranch on their over population of white tail bucks back in those days. lol
I used to be an outlaw hunter back in the 70s till the law changed to a felony myself. Only used rifles and shotguns. Used to go down the roads and let em have it for the meat, and if it had horns, it just makes it easier to load up. One night right after dark, my friend in crime shot a big doe, so I thought because I didn't see any horns. He was a 22 inch monster ten point well over 200 pounds, and his balls were so big, no one could hold em in one hand. The crazy thing about it was that I couldn't see no horns because he had a very dark brown rack that was almost black. My friend, big G could see this deers rack in the scope as the deer was chasing 7 does. Big G died a long time ago and that deer was acclaimed by his dad to be the biggest dam deer he'd ever seen, and he shot more dam deer than anybody I've ever known with the liquor control board top dog back in the 50s and 60s with an old Mauser 270. Them was the good old days.
@beforethestoriesarelost I've got some doozies to tell, my late brother in law shot a doe with a 22 and it buckled. After we threw it in the back of his pickup, and we're going 70 down the hiway, that damn thing stood up and was watching the traffic coming the other way until we got home to my place in the country, and as soon as I stopped, that damn deer jumped out and we both missed it and ran like the devil was after it, never to be seen again.
@beforethestoriesarelost One day late in the afternoon, I killed a tremendous 6 point and big G finally shot a basket rack 8 point in the neck with that old 270 Mauser. After we had both deer in that giant trunk of my old delta 88 we felt that one big G shot come back from the Dade. He finally stopped his ruckus. Big G said he's Dade now, and to stop at pizza hut for a pitcher of beer and a sandwich of some sort that I can't remember what it was called. We was drinking beer waiting for our order, and a sheriff comes in and says whose brown delta 88 is that out there in the parking lot! I got scare shirtless and Big G points at me and said it's his. That sheriff said what in the hells in your trunk, and I nothing. Sheriff said something is raising hell in your trunk, and then Big G says " Are you telling me that you forgot to turn that dam goat loose before you came to get me? At that I slapped both sides of my face and said, I just slap forgot! That sheriff just turned shaking his hade and left. We chugged the rest of the pitcher and got them Hogies, and hauled ass! It was already dark by the time we got to my place and that deer started a ruckus again. Big G said open the trunk just enough so he could grab him by the horns so he could yank hiss ass out, which we did, except he grabbed the dead one and flopped him out. About the time we recognized the dead one was on the ground, we both turned around and that basket hade was staring right at us. It scared the living shit out of me, and I hollered get him, as I was going the other way! Big G wasn't Scared of shit, and he called me puss in the boots , and grabbed that damn deer and flung him out, hollering Get the damn knife you pussy, so I did and cut the deers throat. I had to hear about that shit for the rest of the year, and had to fight anybody else who dared calling me that except for Big G.

Love your great stories, Lane. I just don't think I would have survived the rattlers jumping fence on Uncle OConnors and the Welder around Refugio outside the cold weather in December. I saw one working on the Quintana part of the OConnor one high school summer while working for JP Johnson Oilfield Maintenance that a ranch crew truck go to just a bit ahead of my truck. Crap, if I, as a Senior, hadn't been running a little late I would have gotten the skin of that snake. It was about 9 ft long and a good 12-14 inches thick. By the time I got my crews truck up to the rodeo they had run over it a few times and the entire crew of 8 had all counted coup with a hoe or shovel. The skin was freaking ruined. Dayom. I wonder what a skin like that would be worth now. What a waste. Biggest I ever killed out there was about 6 feet long. I wish you could do a snake story some time.
I shoot a lot of coyotes at night. It is a real bitch judging distance especially running a red light. Makes their eyes glow the size of golfballs and seem much closer.

You and Mr. Beatly are true legends... i feel the same way about the land barons here in West Texas.. no public land to speak of to hunt and them jackass are holding everything hostage.. i like big deer dont get me wrong but i just wana fill my freezer. Im 50 yrs old and about to put down $3800 for a yr at Blue Hills Ranch in Val Verde county.. been saving my pennys for yrs.. Love and Respect sir! 🙏
@@Lovenlife139I used to hunt down by the Mayfield store on the Bently ranch, and the Jesse Sutton ranch. There's more dam deer, turkey, and javelinas than you can shake a stick at. Watch out for snakes in November. Also be careful with the javelinas because they run in giant packs sometimes, and when you shoot one, don't do it up close because the whole damn pack goes into attack model with their damn teeth chopping like a MG 42 and hair standing on end! It's what chaos is. Mountain lion country is what it is with all that abundant game. A hunter killed one back in the 80s that was stalking him, and it weighed 160 pounds. Be careful.

That country ain't the best place to hunt arrowheads. No rivers! McMullen County is a better along the Nueces River.
