  • Sure, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom are legendary classics. But what if they came out in the 80s and sounded like abject garbage? Let's find out!

    The sound effects remind me of Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure.
    I remember playing Captain Comic II in a CGA mode occationally. Though that was in the alternate CGA of Black, Green, Red and Yellow.

    The fun thing is that there were 3 other palettes that one could use that looked a smidge better than the default that didn't require composite CGA...

      Fun fact: As I was recording footage from Mean Streets (one of the few games I know that support CGA, EGA, and VGA), I couldn't get it to show the cyan/magenta palette... until I went to visit Sylvia Linsky, at which point the game itself switched to the glorious cyan/magenta palette!

      I didn't say it was... well, maybe I did. And I admit, there are worse ways of playing Doom than in 4-color CGA with a keyboard. The car dashboard, the pregnancy test, and the potato-powered calculator ones certainly spring to mind. You know, I don't think it's appreciated how much work went into making sure graphics looked good and readable in multiple palettes.
    I have just been made aware of a video showing off Wolf 3D on an 8086 on Al's Geek Lab and it's much more readable than what's shown off here proving once again the importance of accurate hardware emulation.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  4 місяці тому

      I ran these in DOSBox so that's the closest I could get to real hardware. It's not perfect, sure, but it's close.

    • @aaronmarko
      @aaronmarko 4 місяці тому

      @@spacequesthistorian Oh I know. I just have been thinking a lot about media preservation lately and it's really hitting me how important it is to ensure that we accurately represent these games, even through emulation. I'm not saying that you did a bad job by using DOSBox. I like DOSBox and owning old computers are in the realm of hobbyists at this point. I'm saying that the current existing technology we use to emulate these games - as useful as it is - still has a long way to go.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  4 місяці тому +1

      @@aaronmarko Oh, no argument here. Preservation is super-important to me, too. I suppose an alternative to spending loads of money on systems and peripherals that may fail at any time due to their age, a virtual machine might be the way to go? It's still emulation but it would be closer to the original experience. (Side note/disclaimer: I've got devs from both ScummVM and DOSBox hanging out in my Discord so I am, of course, a little biased towards my opinion of these fine people's work.)

    • @aaronmarko
      @aaronmarko 4 місяці тому

      @@spacequesthistorian You know, I think generally speaking, running a virtual machine to emulate the old computer interfaces is probably overkill and still might not even actually give an accurate representation of that era of that particular software. In a way, I can see it potentially running into the same problems that DOSBox has with even more headaches to get running.
      I could see it being useful for specific applications but I think that generally speaking, DOSBox and ScummVM are more than adequate. Both are fantastic pieces of software. DOSBox in particular has to emulate not just multiple versions of DOS but also to emulate 15 years worth of different hardware. The fact that it can run that range of hardware and software is kind of mindblowing.
      That being said, I don't really have a good answer. It's good that these games are being playable but it's really easy to forget that emulation can still get it wrong, no matter how good it might be. So, for whatever it's worth, I guess I just think we need to remember that from time to time.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian  4 місяці тому

      @@aaronmarko Many truths were spoken in that reply. 😊 FWIW, while I don't have any period-accurate hardware myself, there are some intrepid people on my Discord who do. For instance, one guy, EpicPotatoFiend, has a couple of old Apple computers, and he actually gave me footage of him playing through all of SQ1 and SQ2 on an original Apple IIc. Which is kind of impressive, given that the games run so unbearably slow on that hardware that a game like SQ1, which you can comfortably beat in less than half an hour, takes upwards of 6 hours on an Apple IIc because of the loading times and disk swapping. I still don't know what to do with the footage but maybe there's a "worst versions of SQ1 and SQ2" video in them somewhere.
      As for virtual machines, you're right that it might be overkill for DOS games that ScummVM and DOSBox have no problems emulating to a satisfying degree. They do come in handy for games released during what I call "the dark ages of PC gaming," though, which was that period from circa 1995-1999 when Windows 95/98 were king. Games that won't run on modern Windows machines no matter how much you fiddle with compatibility settings.

    Holy shit, Alley Cat. Legit one of the best PC games of that era. And say what you will about the pink/cyan palette, I always thought the red/brown one was even worse. Also, is it just me, or does it seem like CGA Doom is *almost* creating a cool aesthetic? It reminds me of an old Wii game called MadWorld which had a palette of black, white, and red. And very little else.

    Surely Doom would better match the dark CGA palette 0 black, dark green, dark red, brown, and wolf 3d might look better with pallete 2, black,white, cyan, red, but the pain train isn't about what would look best so I don't know why I bring it up. In the ideal case a game will change paleete per level. Dithering in Doom would have helped a lot so less black voids. Doom's PC Speaker SFX sound a lot like the early keen games. I wonder if they just reused various sfx from earlier games.
