- Hey Gang! For the LONGEST time we have been putting our trim together with wood glue and nails, and for years you have commented and pleaded that we try CA Glue.. well the time has FINALLY come! We were able to get our hands on some and let us tell you...it is incredible stuff. CA Glue makes trim work a breeze and actually quite fun. So much so that we were a little sad when it was all over, and we're looking forward to our next trim work job! Thanks for all the recommendations and encouragement Gang! Thanks for all the support and We'll see ya in the next one!

I learned from Finish Carpentry TV, that you can spray the activator on the opposite piece from the glue if you want to get the full 8-10 seconds to set your pieces together. If you do it that way, the glue won't start to set until the 2 pieces are actually touching each other.
Is that not what he's doing?

Was in construction my whole life and i can tell you this guy is the real deal. Guess i need to subscribe, this be the only construction channel i can watch with out yelling your doing it wrong.

CA glue is awesome! It will give out long term though. If you use it on the ends with wood glue in between, the CA glue holds it tight while you install it and the wood glue dries for the long term strength. Best of both worlds! That’s what I’ve been doing anyway, with the great success!

Been working as a finish carpenter for a while now, I dont want to boohoo on this awesome tool, but for anything long term make sure you use wood glue too! 2P will crystallise and crack with age!
could you do both on the piece? 2P for quick setup but alternate with some wood glue for long term hold?
I have been installing high end for 11 years and never had a problem with mitre bond and always use it. honestly i feel like people just use such a small bead that this can accrue

On the under cabinet led lights. You can put the cable connector backwards in the knock out to save room and it looks better, without the 2 screws that clamp the wire showing.

Good for you! I am a 65 year old woman who has been building and remodeling myself since I was 17 and helped my dad starting when I was 5 years old. I am remodeling my house now and selling it to build my last and final home. It is a passion and I don’t know if I will ever stop. Or at least I hope I have many many years left in me. My hubby and I have always helped single and widowed women who need repairs done. I get them materials at wholesale and we don’t charge them to do the work, we also teach them so they at least know how things should be done so they won’t get taken advantage of if they do have to pay for something in the future.

Cabinet maker here...been using 2P -10 for 15 years....
Must mention that it is the activator that does the trick and hardest to obtain...
..it works with all super glues, Gorilla Glue gel glue, loctite super glue E.T.C.
These glues are available everywhere but the Activator is not
So do you use the activator with those other glues as well ?

I read somewhere that 70% IPA "rubbing alcohol, unscented" works as activator. Test it on some scrap pieces???
I just use regular tap water. Ever tried washing ca glue off your hand? It just hardens immediately. Same deal when you use it like an activator.
@@mattaudia4968 i have a bottle, on mist setting, and yes, filled with tap water. works the same from what i can tell. instantly hardens super glue (CA) and makes the Gorilla glue foam up and locks whatever thats touching it! tap water, poor mans activator......
The 2p-10 isn't the only CA glue activator ever made you know.
If you have trouble obtaining it, you're looking in the wrong places, but I can give you a really good place to look.
You know what hobbies end up using a lot of CA glue (and therefore activator)?
Building stick-built balsa aircraft models (the kind that are always meant to fly).
Additionally, scale model building goes thru a great variety of different adhesives, including CA glue (and its activator).
So, my idea is to go to the nearest book store and pick up either an RC aircraft magazine or a scale model building magazine (Or both, since you're only gonna be out like maybe $20 for both), and look thru the advertisements.
You're guaranteed to find several companies offering not just CA glue, but many other kinds of adhesives and potentially useful small tools.

Hey Paul, that trick with the blue painters tape is pretty cool, definitely will use that on this next kitchen remodel we're doing...thx brother...We've done quite a bit of those small returns like that too...Also, the 2P-10 is def an awesome product and game changer for crown...😉
On cabinets that have a side reveal like these do, I normally rip a small scribe moulding to shim the side of the cabinet flush with the reveal for crown, painted to match before installation. When doing it this way, your miters end up flush with the corner of the face frame instead of being inset from the corners. It's a cleaner look, and I do the same thing for the skirt moulding. Great job on the trim and lighting, guys! Happy that you finally jumped on the 2P-10 train... It's amazing, for sure. I use a similar product from Starbond, as I find it to have greater strength, less odor, and comes in 6 different viscosities for different uses. I also use Hy-PUR for heavier trim, casing, etc. as it gives an even stronger bond than any CA glue.
When doing under cabinet lighting, I usually try to put the lights as far forward as possible, facing towards the wall, so they reflect more light off the backsplash and are easier on the eyes as they don't reflect straight into the face.

I’m going to flip my undercabs around so they face the wall. I don't like the way the light projects from them now. I'd like to make the switch to LED too - maybe it's time for some new lights. Guess I'll have to head to the store - darn 🙂
100% on the scribe for the corners. That or 3/4x1/4x11.25 pieces of filler. The reveal also give you a tiny bit more play on the back end of corners
I very much appreciate what you said about the location of lighting. I'm a master electrician in Canada and I used to as an apprentice install lights in the center. But now that I know better 25 years later😜, I install the UCL on the back side of the valance trim if I can, but if not then I install it as close to the trim as possible so as not to have that reflection or hotspot you talked about. Did a few UCL installs where a chanel is routed in the bottom of cabinets. Looked so clean and sexy!!?
Warm light, as photographer, is what's used to make food look more delicious. So, yes, good for kitchen's too.
also great for sticking 2 things together. blue tape on each, CA glue in the middle and you have a strong temporary bond. great for templating etc.

If you install a fascia from the top of the cabinet to the ceiling then you can install the crown up to the ceiling. Then there wouldn't be a space from the crown to the ceiling for dust to accumulate and a custom look.
This. But you never know if the customers budget allowed all that extra work.
That bothered me too that looks so annoying to clean and you might accidentally break your crown moulding.
Lots of good tips here! Thank you. I'll throw you one back- get the Wago 221 connectors instead of the 222. Better in every way. I prefer them over wire nuts especially when mixing solid and stranded wire.
Hey Guys, another great video. "The Mitred Crown Affair...a well hung job... featuring Stud Pack! CA glue for the'W' ! " A tip I use when doing a delicate saw cut is put a piece of masking tape over the teeth at the end of the saw so it won't scratch the finished surface.

that miter cut was cool. that little chunk is the difference between just getting by and making it right.
Set your roofing square on your bench. Use it to help line up the crown when using the ca glue. Also put a dab of regular glue in the joint to help reinforce the joint. You could also glue small blocks to the back of the joint with ca glue for added peace of mind.
Silky makes a slightly larger pull saw if you want to trim your cabinet frames from across the room. I'm a noob so I just keep a folding 4" flush cut in my belt.
CA is a great tool but has no flex. Hybrid gluing will help keep you from having to fix opened corners from seasonal changes. Tite-3 is great to run with CA to get the best of both. Thanks for the great videos.

As another viewer mentioned, create a block to fit the moulding (any moulding) into to make a perfect fit 90 degree join. No more guessing. I'd also consider using the 2P-10 to glue the trim to the cabinet. if it sets up too fast at least use some carpenter's glue? Another excellent video Paul! Love the close-up work Jordan is doing.
Glue a short piece of dowel on the back of your outside corner and it’ll be super strong.

I do a couple daps of CA glue if I'm worried about the strength. There's some variants that are slightly more flexible. Esp if you do +- corners

I've never used CA glue either, but the look you gave the camera at 11:05 convinced me to give it a try
Liquid on 1 side, activator on the other piece... then you have 10 seconds from squish. Or mix in baking soda with regular superglue, not only does it speed up the set time but doubles as a filler for micro-voids
I have been using 2 P10 for about 7 years now and do a crazy amount of crown. It is a great product how ever you do not get 10 seconds of working time. Once the glued side touches the activator side you better have it where you want it. Game over.
If you need time to move it don't use the activator at all just the glue and hold for 20 - 30 seconds as recommended.
Warm light in the winter and cool light light in the summer.
I found if the nail blows out the side of a piece of wood the pressure is likely not high enough.
Also CA glue activator and debonder have a chemical in them that will dissolve marker, some printed items, and some paints.

Cool white makes sense down south as the sunlight is cooler closer to the equator. Warm white is a closer match to sunlight up north.

I recently learned about the triple antibiotic cream not being a good idea. My husband got a nasty wound from helping me unload some Rainbow Poplar I’d bought. We used regular Vaseline on his wound and bandaged it. The Vaseline keeps bacteria from getting into the wound, and it also keeps the bandage from sticking. It lets the wound heal from the inside out, so there won’t be as large of a scar. Once it healed (in about a week), he started putting Vitamin E from a gel cap on it. The scar is very minimal now, and it’s only been 2-1/2 weeks!

Love your work, dad and son team, if I may make a suggestion instead of notching the face frame to accommodate the crown and light rail , add a piece of scribe molding to make up the difference easy and faster, that’s how I do it, but I used to do the same notch method
One thing I learned to prevent wood chips from sawing is lay a peice of tape down before cutting
Ooh! I was just looking for 2P10 and wondering and reading about super glue "activator" and, APPARENTLY, you get the 10 seconds by putting the glue on part #1 and spraying the activator on part #2 - THEN put them together so the activator on #2 activates the glue on #1 - I know how well JB Weld works on wood but never would have thought to use super glue ! Looks pretty awesome - and would certainly be a whole lot cleaner. Love your channel! Father and Son - don't see enough of that these days and I enjoy watching people do what they enjoy doing. Especially, the sort of stuff society considers "work".

CA glue for the uninitiated is cyanoacrylate, commonly know as Super Glue. Yes, that super glue. This gentleman is using a two part formula for his application. A good choice as premix super glues generally have a one year shelf life sealed and only one month when opened. Works great on porous materials. Moisture helps activate the curing so make sure that your work pieces are not bone dry. Products vary so always read labels. Cheers to this gent for sharing his discovery. I will have to give this a try.

Use it to hold a stop block to the miter saw to cut repeated smaller length cuts. Tap it off with your hammer when done. Comes off the metal nice and clean.

Been a nurse and in the medical field for 20+ years. Yes some people ha s a reaction to one of the 3 antibiotics in Neosporin but it’s pretty rare and the results of a triple abx ointment is great. That being said after two or three days just switch to only Vaseline or Aquaphor. You don’t need the antibiotics after that. Got burned out last year in the medical field, so now I’m doing construction full-time. Was always doing it on the side. Great content, love the channel!!
The only time I ever get a cut or anything infected is if I put any kind of triple antibiotic ointment on it

In my opinion Wego is a great four low-voltage stuff as for home use twisting the wire with the right amount of turns done correctly with a wire nut is the best way to go… Wegos are pinch technology which only pinches a very small area of contact as opposed to a wire twisted has more contact area and it’s mechanically stronger if done correctly it’s the best option and it’s been done for years…. Love your show guys… Keep on rockin…
24:00 "Pro Tip," Complete all electrical connections BEFORE you mount fixture to underside of cabinet. Saves you from standing on your head to make hook ups. Same principle when installing an under-sink disposal. Make electrical connection BEFORE you hang that unit. Connections are usually on the bottom, or the back!
Potential help with chipping on miter cuts for the trim pieces... When cutting Melamine, applying painter's tape to the surface before cutting makes a SIGNIFICANT difference in limiting chip out, and I wonder if doing the same thing to trim would have the same effect? Granted, it would take some time to get tape lined up to the contour of the moulding, but the result could be worth the time.
OH! And glad Paul finally went to the doc for his hand! I've been wondering about that but didn't want to prod!

I've been using a Dewalt DW716 for years when doing crown. That's all I use it for. Made a L shaped bed/back piece that I bolt onto the saw. Had to drill 4 holes into the fence. Attach your stop on the bottom piece to match your crown size and spring angle and you are all set to go. I unbolt the bed/back piece for transport. Make it as long as you need. Works great.

I recommend the Festool Kapex miter saw. It’s pricey, but sometimes money doesn’t matter when it’s making you money. I’ve been remodeling homes for 37 years, and got my Festool miter saw about 5 years ago. I love it. Also with the vacuum system, I can set up in my customer’s homes.
By the way, I started using the CA glue about 3 years ago, and I was like you, I couldn’t believe it. It was a game changer.

Paul, use your handy dandy "Buzz Saw" for removing the bit of wood from the cabinets, mask with masking tape on the out side of your wood removal zone so the saw doesn't scuff the cabinet finish.
I have the RIDGID 12" dual bevel miter saw, and I've been very happy with it.
Definitely cool white. It's much brighter & supposedly better for you. Warm light has a yellow glow which I don't care for. Everything is coming along great. Love the color of the cabinets & the back splash!.
I've been a fan for years and have made so many converts
I did all the crown in our old house (we are now remodeling) and I didn't cope anything but just fiddled with the different corners and got them as close as I could with all the wall imperfections. Boy, going back now and pulling it all out, it was a crap job (20 years ago I did it). Now, with the remodel, we are coping for all of the out-of-square corners and it looks fantastic. I discovered the CA glue option from another channel and it works great as long as the runs are not too long. My son has gotten into the habit of CA gluing them once we put them up in the room even on coped corners to avoid putting any nails near the joint. Much easier. We do go through a bunch of the stuff though. Great video.

Keep up the amazing work! Love that under cabinet lighting! I normally just use led strip attached to some flat trim. Awesome video as always!
LED strip/tape lights are the way forward for under cabinet lighting. You can cut the strip to length which suits your job, and it's smaller than the lights used in the video. The strip light comes with an LED driver, so you just connect mains voltage (ie 120 or 230V depending on where you live in the world) to the driver and you're set! For the colour temperature shown in the video, I personally preferred the look of the 4000K, but that may change when it's dark outside...
