THIS TOOL PAID for ITSELF on the FIRST JOB! Half-Ton 1960s Shower Demolition

- Happy Sunday Gang, sorry we haven't posted in a week, here's a long one to make up for it :)
Today's video we FINALLY invest in a tool we've needed for a longg time. We'd argue that it paid for itself on the first job! We'd probably still be in that bathroom if it wasn't for this bad boy, buy once cry once! This was a pretty tough demo, and for a DIYer can probably seem a bit overwhelming. We wanted to take the time in this video to shower how we break down our tougher demos piece by piece, to come out with a clean and safe result (Might get a little wet sometimes) We're glad to be done with this one, and happy to share it with you! Drop any questions or comments you have below and thanks for watching! We'll see ya in the next one!
Bosch Demolition Hammer

I wish my wife looked at me the way Paul looks at that Bosch.
Maybe she would if only you shared a few more qualities with the demo hammer… 😂
@@toddjasper1 Made me laugh out loud! Maybe too loudly for my wife..... o.O
😂😂😂
@@toddjasper1 🤣😂🤣
Funniest comment I’ve read in a while!
Guys, I'm loving the Sunday drops. It's like 1985 and I'm watching Bob Villa. Now all you need is a mellow theme song.
I'm glad that lid decided to stay in place until you wanted it down. '70s construction and no beer bottles in the wall? Well done boys.
😂 no beer bottles yet
Clean your demolition hammer thoroughly with compressed air before wiping the exterior with the microfiber towel. Blowing compressed air into the tool's air vents will clean out the abrasive mortar dust that the motor's cooling fan sucked into the housing. Your Bosch demo tool will run cooler and longer - protecting that $600 investment. Cheers!
Beat me to it.👍
Read my mind!
I was thinking that but then maybe that blows it deeper into the tool. I wasn’t sure.
that micro fiber towel is for wiping excess grease off the bits. also dont forget to grease your bits if that model doesnt self lube.
@@NoL0NGERhumAn No. Use a paper towel or piece of discarded paper to wipe off grease. That is a high quality towel. It is senseless to waste it as a rag.
What a fantastic showcasing of the proper way to demo. You don’t just go and rip and hammer things out. You’ve gotta be methodical even during demo. Another great video guys. Loved the new Bosch Hammer. Almost at 125K! Keep up the good stuff fellas. Stay blessed.
how can you not love the energy they work with. on a german construction site people almost fall asleep, watching you is a real breath of fresh air, it motivates a ton to watch you power through these projects and always learning new stuff from across the atlantic. cheers
"Oh yeah, I meant to tell ya..." Classic dad line! 😂
That wire mesh is the worst! That Bosch will pay for itself in no time. Great tool. And great video!
Omg I had the wire mesh drenched in concrete and grout. Shower hasn’t been updated since the house was built in the 70s it was heavy and a nightmare to demo
not in one use
As an HVAC Tech, I love and have much respect for your knowledge on everything from HVAC, to plumbing, to electrical, to framing, to finish work, etc. UA-cam comments can be positive but also unnecessarily negative with know-it-alls that want to tell you that you are doing something wrong. I just want to tell you, never change! You are obviously a wealth of knowledge and always willing to learn more about everything. I absolutely love that, and I love to see how you teach Jordan about all the skills of the trade, and how Jordan captures it and brings it to all of us through this channel. You guys are easily my favorite follow and your pride and skill in your work, I'm constantly in awe of. Seriously, you are so damn good at what you do. This comment is very long overdue, but THANK YOU!!!
Super appreciate that Kurt thx 👊👍
I took down an entire 7x12 bathroom of those mesh tile walls with a chisel and a hammer. I was a single mom, working a full time job. It was basically 2square feet every night after work. Which was fine because I couldn’t carry any more than that at one time 🤣
I wouldn’t begrudge that $600 purchase for one second! Great job guys!
Respect!
Hope Bosch is a a sponsor. That was a perfect demo ad for their tool.
Congratulations on the home. 😉
I got that same size Bosch 15 years ago refurbished. FABULOUS tool. I’ve torn up many a bathroom floor with it ( I don’t have your cool pneumatic tool,….yet). And I took that exact same shower out of my sons house with it. I never would have made it with out the thing. When we lived in NE PA, I ever used it to chop ice away from our split unit!!! It’s a monster. You will wonder how you ever got along without it!!!
I have a vintage 1968 shower stall in a bathroom I'm going to be renovating soon. What an eye-opener! Thank you for taking us on the insightful journey of the deconstruction and the heads up for what's in store.
Hey gang. Fellow builder here from the UK. I start a bathroom demo tomorrow. I do prefer watching them than doing them 😂
I am all about your obsession with cleanliness on the jobsite. It's the key to safety.
And not just that: if you are hiring a contractor to do work while you're living in the house, what is going to affect your decision who to hire, or who you recommend to friends after the job?
Amazing how that floated shower has lasted this long and no leaks or minimal water damage.
And looked real nice
Still the best way ro build a shower. Hardee board is ok but the flatness of the floated wall and durability make for a more solid shower wall. Higher quality results
Props on the duck squeaky for the sledge and the musical flourish when “the hammer” was revealed.
That First Aid kit was probably a collector's item. 😁
My son and I demoed a 1982 Tile mortar bed Shower this week. Metal lath. Walls were tiled before the floor. The metal lath had "cut" the same style shower 'pan' y'all had. It was completely rotted. The shower was on the second floor. The plywood subfloor was completely rotted through in one corner. The 2x4 sill plate along the wall is almost completely rotted away. This shower must have leaked for years and years. Why someone put the walls up first with the lath the way to the pan was crazy! Wish we had the Demo Hammer, but we got it done. Love your videos.
I love those SDS demo hammers, I even use mine with a spade attachment to dig through clay soil and rocky soil, works great. That and my multi tool "buzz saw' as you call it, are some of my favorite tools I git within the last few years and LOVE!
1950s and 1960s homes use to do the wet wall in 2x6 to give more room for plumbing and the cast iron stacks. I don’t believe it was code, but builders all in the North East use to do that a lot.
2x6 plumbing walls were standard operating procedure for apartments and single family homes when I got started in the early 70s in Virginia. Many times having a thicker wall helped avoid having roughed in waste lines (that had gotten shifted when the slab was poured or were just laid out wrong by the plumber who did the ground works) falling outside the wall.
I cannot believe I never thought to look for a sharkbite cap. So sweet. No more soldering on caps to then cut off. Love how lovingly you cleaned that new tool. I do that as well the first few times I use it. Then after a while it just gets a quick brush off before being tossed into the box.
I love how you removed the vanity top, cabinet, toilet and then decided to take the door off the hinges lol..... sounds like something i would do ... great video, man they sure did a great job on that shower unit back in the day.. it held up 50 years....
Sundays are better when a Studpack video is released!! Keep up the good work guys!
Nothing will stop you guys nor rain or sun!! And that 600 bucks well spent! You take care of your tools and they will take care of you!! 👍👍👍😎🇨🇱
That squeaky toy sound when he was trying to demo made me laugh out loud! Great editing there. 😆
Nothing better than a multi tool function tool that does multiple jobs makes it alot more cost effective Great video once again guys
Thx Joe 👊👍
My 1968 midwest ranch house has that exact same bathroom tile, 1-inch mortar, chicken wire. The slight difference is that it is a bathtub and the tiles go everywhere in the bathroom. Up the walls. The ceiling. The soffit. Left, right, up, down, all-around crazy! Everywhere. Looking forward to using Schluster / Kerdi soon - thanks for the help. You guys are awesome.
I like how you caught yourself on the water heater slip up comment. I appreciate how much you two are capable of doing, especially the different skill sets required for each part of renovation. Keep up the awesome work and teaching us like we are physically on the job with you.
Can’t wait to see how this bathroom turns out. Would love some in depth videos about the whole process :)
I demoed my two bathrooms in my 1950s home and I am glad Home Depot has this tool for rent. You are right, worth its weight in gold.
Awesome- like to see a father working with his son- priceless.
I love the relationship between you guys... I wish that me and my father would have been close with me.. we had a relationship but it wasn't a glorious one .. rip pops...
Charish each other you nwver know when you be kicking off ..
My lovely wife, Katherine, got me that very same Bosch demolition hammer. I love my precious.......and the lovely wife too 😁. Congrats on a great buy! My wife actually worked at Lowe's and waited for the sale and got it for half the price...... she demolished that high price and hammered it into submission.
Half price dang that’s sweet 👍👊
I just love watching you guys. Not that I’m gonna be doing any DIY as I’m an old guy of 70 now I wish UA-cam and you guys had been around 30 years ago. It would have inspired me to do more remodeling. Thanks guys and God Bless!
I sure hope Bosch paid you all for the advertisement. You two are a pleasure to watch.
Late to this video, but back in 2015 I demo’d and renovated the master bath of my home (built in 1979) and had a similarly thick mortar backer for all the tile. Did the deed solo with just hand tools. I don’t think I’ve ever been more worn out or cut up 🤣
It's SO nice watching guys work who really CARE about their jobs and do such an awesome gig. Thanks.
Great instructional video on demo day! Looking forward in seeing the next video and job continuation. Glad that you don’t try to hide the hard work & effort that goes into each step of a remodel!
Paul "you want to wrap that around for me", Jordan "go ahead" lol
Great work! I have a house built in 1965 and this is exactly what I've been looking for since 2011. I've avoided demo'ing the shower for this exact reason. I would have never guessed the amount of mortar or even the sand!!!
From a person who for 40 years, rented this type of equipment right up to 60 to 80 lb air and electric demo hammers to D I Y ers and professional contractors alike Invest in two pieces of steel of each type. Use one for about 5 minutes until it starts to get hot. Put it aside, and use the other for the like time. If you keep alternating like that, they are less likely to get overly hot, and mushroom dull. This will also keep the temper in the steel, for a lot longer life.
They showed their love for that Bosch tool by remembering to clean it off & by the way he lovingly wiped it clean.
A fun video to watch.
All types of crazy stuff? Here's one: I like to cook, and do most of the cooking. My wife thinks that the kitchen counters are for decorating with everything from cute bottles of Olive oil to fake plants. Not much room for the cook. If I were to build this house again (or remodel) I would make the kitchen cabinets 30 inches deep and the uppers 18 inches deep. I did that in the laundry room (because the washer and dryer need 30 inches of depth) and the extra storage is great. Also the counter top is much better for folding clothes (in front of the decorating).
Love watching this father and son duo get at it AND have fun on the job.
I also noted that all those screws used for the plate attachment to mold the cast iron lavatory were slotted. Today even those screws if still used in the mold would be Phillips. As you started demoing that vanity I imagined you saying, "If any more materials are dated in here, such as the plywood, I expect them to be dated '68-'69." I doubted that mirror was put in separately, or that any changes had occurred in there since 08/69 to 04/70. From your statement I'm just 3 years older than yourself. One of my earliest demo memories was as a 22 year old standing in a bathtub with a sledge filling the tub with 50 year old lathe and plaster demo. If was weighty, as you experienced but also had stacks of pointy lathe shard and nails mixed in. dusty, dirty, grimy, and a huge workout with all that weight. my 8 lb sledge probably hit the wall 200 times.. Who needs a gym, get a job in the trades.
For a 51ish year old shower, I was surprised to see very little water damage.
Enjoy your new toy. Time is money and that bad boy is a definite time saver.
This channel reminds me a lot of myself working with my dad. I invite him along for various projects only to end up watching him do most of the work lol. After 30 years I'm sure he kinda expects it by now.
Nice video of kitchen planning, old vanity, toilet, and shower demo, first aid, and a tool unboxing/demo/review!
Bosch and Porter Cable are my 2 preferred brands for power tools. They hold up well and haven't disappointed me yet.
You guys are great! Love the added comedy that you guys sprinkle throughout each video.
I had the exact same shower in my house, also vinyl pan and metal mesh; it was leaking bad. I ripped it out and replaced it with a 4 piece fiberglass shower. I could not be more happy with the result. Dad and I gutted the entire bathroom and hauled off the debris to the dump; 3,000 lbs it was. I am sure the majority of that was the shower. Every bit of the debris, we threw out the bathroom window into the trailer. We were wore out that day!
Cool thx Casey 👊💪
OMG, I hope you found a place for yourselves! I can't wait to see what you do with all the freedom of being 100% in control!
Great video. The new line set is touching the underside of the roof deck. I like to pull it down a bit. That way, when the roof gets replaced, it won't be in danger of getting punctured with a roofing nail.
My dad would’ve kicked me off the job for the day if I asked him if he needed a bandage for that scrape lol
I love the sound your fists make when you guys fist bump! 🤜🤛
This great. I love construction work--I can watch work all day long. This Stud Pack series It is better than "This Old House" because Stud Pack shows all of the details of the dirty work. Good Job!!!!!!!! Stay safe.
About the Bosch "baby" Jackhammer. I bought one several years ago and it has more than paid for itself. I use it to break concrete (however, if the concrete is too thick, you do need to get a heavier one from the rental place); drill holes in concrete; with a "spade" attachment I have dug yards and yards and yards of dirt with less effort than using a pick (note: the spade attachment only loosens the dirty--I wish it could also shovel it out, but alas it doesn't); with a chisel attachment I have grubbed my way through very very hard sandstone (I actually wore out a chisel on that job); and with a new chisel point, I have removed stucco from the outside of my house. My friends have borrowed it several times. Never had a problem using it, it just runs and runs. Probably the best and most useful labor-saving tool that I have ever purchased.
Hitting the water valve was hilarious...and you just laughed.
I am a big fan of Paul and his son they do great things and they have great ideas
Demoed a small guest bath in my 1924 Craftsman last year. That 40 sqft room yielded 3,200 lbs of debris. Float mortar shower and a mud bed floor. Sadly it'll never be that solid ever again, but it's got an 8.5' ceiling and a shower that doesn't leak. Fair trade imo. Oh and all new piping throughout of course. The plumber in me couldn't resist.
Hey guys. Forgive me, had to tell it. Homeowner calls me one day in '06 asking if I would come down and re-tile his bath. I had installed the original job around '2000. Wet set. The whole bath. Stall, floor, walls tub deck, you get the picture. Said he was not currently living in the house because of renovations.{one yr.}. Said a flood had carried the house away from the foundation and the only thing left standing was my tile job. House was located about 100 yards. from the Delaware River north of New Hope, Pa.
Long sleeve shirts always on demo day. You'll sweat a little more, but the dust control and wound prevention is worth it.
Please tell me where you buy the puncture proof shirts or do you just not demo expanded wire mesh?
All caught up on the new stuff, going back to the archives for more Stud Pack goodness. Hammer drills are the best for demo! Only bit sweet moment was to think about those 50-year-old 2x4s going to the dump. I always try to cut that old lumber as long as possible and reuse it as it's impossible to get wood that strong anymore.
love you guys' attitude to safety. let's do it, and let's do it right!
Great video, good to see. Normally we would work on our own homes/properties when business was slow, but definitely the most creative for sure...
Guys, it amazes me how well you work together! that is AWESOME! Wish I had a dad or son that I could work with like that! Thanks for Sharing!
Whomever built this old house/shower area .. built it to last! Jesus .. the amount of structure was crazy! PS - you should save that first aid kit - I know there's a market out there for vintage first aid kits that have unwrapped bandages and stuff within them. The box alone is probably worth some money 🤣🩺
Just recently we demo'd 2 small bathrooms. Tiled and plastered walls/floors. The dump trailer load was 12000lbs...and they were upstairs bathrooms. Insane
Did the 1971 master in my old house. I had a shower similar. I took it all out the window in 5 gallon buckets. dumped to a wheel barrel . Work like a champ. Mine had a vinyl pan. I was very weak and easy to take out. I got lucky because they cheaped out with regular sheet rock on the walls. Had the thick bull nose tiles, but they double the sheet rock under it. I have a smaller SDS sized roto hammer and I love it. Well worth the 175 I spent on it. Its done tile removal as well as drilling holes in concrete for slid anchors. I think the biggest chisel that I was able to find was maybe 5 or 6 inches. Also, post up on removing the mortar. The tile was easy, but getting the slab clean was a bear and plenty dusty. I did 2 9x13 sections with a small chisel. Took about 3 or 4 hours a section easy. Put Vinyl plank over it. Was smooth when I was done though. Also, no more videos of polishing your tool ;-)
As soon as you started whacking that mortar, I thought, "Oh no. You need a rotary hammer." And then... :) Glad you bought it. Worth every penny.
You guys are impressive. First because I learn so much from professionals). Secondly, for the dad, you have raised a great son who clearly wants to be there with you!
Thx Brendan 👊👍
You guys are still awesome. Great to see all the hard work you guys put in to your jobs as well as the great editing. Told you 100,000 is past you now on to 500,000! Keep up the great job. 👍🏼
Compressor, and automotive air hammer works wonders for demo work. Flat nose bit, sharp bit, spade bit.
It’s always so exciting when I see a new stud pack upload. Also now I need to convince my wife I need that Bosch.
I recently had to pull out 2 of those old cast iron sinks also. Both of those were from 1962. And on the one you had My dob is 3-14-64 😂 and my wife's would have been 1 month old to the day. And YES!!! on the BOSCH Destruction toy.
I just gutted a bath with a mortar wall about 2” thick, 5’ high around the room and surrounding the shower. I used a diamond blade in a circular saw. Cut slices down the wall about every 16”. Preyed the pieces off the wall. The workout was hauling it all downstairs. The biggest delay was waiting for the dust cloud to exhaust so I could continue cutting.
GRATS on getting your own place to do as you want, looking forward to watching it!
20:19 best demo action shot I have ever seen!! Nice work! Had me laughing. The outro on this video with the Bosch microfiber had me laughing and smiling for the ending. Awesome work Studpack! I am so glad that you finally bought a demo hammer! I've been watching all of your old videos for over a year and I remember cringing every time about going to the rental yard in the old ones. Excited for ya!
That first aid kit was probably worth money.
Just demoed a whole bathroom with that exact same tile 48" up on all the walls.
Wire mesh nailed to the studs, with a scratch coat, then 1 1/4" mortar bed for the tile. Made for a great tile job, lasted many years, but pain in the @$$ to tear out
I don’t know how I end up here guys. But I love it! You are awesome! So entertaining!
I subscribed and look forward seeing more!
I like how you caught yourself on the hot water heater. Um water heater. That's one of my pet peeves. I love the demo episode. That's the kind of work I got started doing at the beginning of my business. One of my favorite tools was the Bosch 11316 demo hammer
LOL, that Bosch chisel hammer thingy(official term)was like a hot knife through butter on that mesh and tile.🥰
Awesome job guys, love your videos. Had a similar shower that I demoed a few months ago, I used the angle grinder with a tile cutting blade and cut sections out and then use the SDS hammer drill. Made things a lot easier getting the sections out, just a tip for next time. My home was built in 1987, so I had the same dilemma to deal with. Anyway, keep up the great videos!
Love the content, been watching for a while and i constantly am learning from you both.
You guys are just terrific. Thanks again.
Awesome job guys!! That’s a lot of elbow grease and hard work!!!! You guys do amazing work and I could watch your videos all day!!
I've done 4 and 5 ton mud wall/floor demo's...It's brutal work...Our main line houses have 1.5 inch thick mud, over wire, with thick ceramic tiles... Very heavy stuff...
I was laughing so hard when I heard the sound when he was hitting the wall with the sledgehammer
I have just recently started watching your videos and started with the oldest ones posted. From what I have seen so far, I hope that your son Jordan plans to make a full career in the trades, because he is being taught by a master. I only wish that I had someone to teach me the finer aspects of the construction trade when I started 50 years ago. A very wise carpenter once told me that how you do something is how you do every thing. My hats off to you guys for going up and beyond the get it done and get paid attitude.
Super appreciate that Doug 👊👍
You guys are doing great. Really enjoying the channel. I love seeing a father/son team get along so well
Thx Motor 👊👍
A couple of times there, you guys were channeling Jeff Williams. (Yeah! You're gonna get wet!) Great job as usual.
I loved the wall paper behind the mirror. My favorite decade is the 1970s. I turned 18 in 1975, joined the USAF, and left home without looking back. '76 was the best year of my life!
Good choice on the Bosch, you take care of it and it will take care of you.
again you are the best this is my second video watch you and i wish you were up here but thank you i just bought me a HD hammer drill from Dwalt havent used it yet but after i saw this video i cant wait i do a lot and having the right tool is the best i just wish i had a helper like you i would get done alot faster will be watching more of you . thank you so much.
Love your tools and they will love you.
Love a Sunday morning with coffee and a Stud Pack video. Well done guys!
Have fun with the mesh ! It's pretty sharp ! That demo hammer is really great ! It's going to pay for itself in a couple of jobs !
The Marty Carlberg backing tune is next level good.
You guys rock! Paul and Jordan, excellent work and video as always
1 5/8" Demo hammer is a beast! "Don't want to use it because it will get dirty!" I totally understand!
Nice, I'll have to rent that hammer when I do my master bath from 1967! Fun video techniques Jordan!
Man it rains alot in your area. I thought it rained alot here in N.E. Ohio this summer. seems like most of your videos have and down pore outside. Great videos keep them coming. when I get off work its great to prop my feet up and watch someone else work.
