Jake Rutigliano - I was watching a documentary recently on John Merrick. This scene is an accurate recreation of this incident and the events. However, in a forensic study of his physical movement if he were alive today and when he was alive, he wouldn’t have been able to walk as fast in the movie as it’s depicted. He would’ve walked much, much slower and not as accurately. Johns left leg was almost useless, his right leg which was deformed was his dominant leg and his left leg was more like a crutch because it couldn’t keep up with the deformities of his body which were all on his right side. @@jenniferschillig3768 oh my God... I want to build a time machine just so I can go back and hug that man. one of the finest human beings there ever was. my sister was born with a deformity too, so I empathize with that struggle, even if it's not my own. the body is merely a vessel. what matters is the soul that resides in it. my sister and Mr. Merrick have proven that to me, time and time again. may God rest his beautiful soul.
This movie gets me every time. I blub like a baby! This scene is powerful, but I love two other scenes, that are more understated. When Treves first sees the elephant man (a view we don't share) the camera focuses entirely on Anthony Hopkins' face. A look of incomprehension and deep empathy, yet he remains impassive, that is until tears well up in his eyes and trickle down his cheeks. Great acting. Then the afternoon tea scene in Treves' home. I well up even before that scene starts, merely in anticipation. A wonderful, wonderful film.
I once showed this scene to a class of children in a monster writing workshop. At the end of the clip, I asked when the scene got scary for them and they said when John was cornered by all those people. They understood my lesson that day, in that sometime we are the monsters, and the victims can be the ones who can't help their existence and wish to just live as best they can.
I actually didn't cry but I feel very very sad about this scene. I really want to hug him. He is more beautiful on the inside than most people. I'm terrified about this. It hurts in my heart to see this.
Thank you, Sir John Hurt; for bringing dignity and intelligence to your Oscar-nominated portrayal of John Merrick. May you and Merrick both rest in peace.
There`s no other film i cried so much like this one, such anger towards society for ignorance and misjudgment and so much compassion for this man, Rest in Peace John Merrick, easily the greatest human being who ever lived!
Jeremy, The Innovator i strongly agree. I saw the film about two years ago (I also watched it before then) and this scene gets to me everytime. However said it is I just can't stop watching it because of John Hurt's powerful performance. In other words I just love to torture myself.
I am 51 years old and have seen a hell of a lot of movies but this scene is by far my favourite scene of ANY movie I have seen so far!!! He finally stands up for his personal dignity and doesn't care what anybody thinks anymore. My wife is a teacher and I constantly bug her to get the Board of Education to make this movie mandatory watching for anti-bullying initiatives.
The actor in the bowler hat with the handle-bar mustache does such a great job in this scene without even having a line. Reacting with shock and then empathy. Such a great scene
@Crimson King First of all, that's not why he died. Second of all - yes, I wouldn't mind kissing someone who looked different or deformed (I'm not sure what you mean by "monster"). If someone has a great personality and manner of being then that already makes them attractive regardless of their appearance. And to be honest the Elephant Man's deformation doesn't repulse me that much at all. And character-wise, he seemed like a better human being than most "normal"-looking men these days.
@Crimson King The only monster here is you, on the outside you may seem "normal" or even call yourself handsome/beautiful, but based on what you said, on the inside you are a very disgusting human being.
I saw this when I was only 14 year old. Alone. On TV. This was before the internet was a thing. I didn't know this was one of the stand-out iconic scenes of this film. Still... I remember crying for him, and feeling the power of this scene. Two things happened that day. I gained a new appreciation for my fellow human beans, and I fell in love with cinema.
Thank God I saw this movie alone. I was crying non stop at almost every scene. That scene when he visits the doctor's place and when he shows the picture of his mother to the doctor's wife, I could see in his eyes how proud he was when she says that his mom looks so beautiful. I just wish we all have a beautiful heart like Mr. John Merrick.
The fact they shown us this movie when I was in primary school I was scarred and shocked, now when I watch it as a 20 year old, it brings tears to my eyes everytime, such a masterpiece of a film, RIP John hunt
This movie played on HBO when I was 7 years old. I really believe it taught me about compassion and kindness. I cried when I watched it then and I still tear-up when I watch these scenes. and I’m 51 now. The power of great filmmaking. ❤️
the fact he hid his face to not scare others, and how he dreamed of meeting a blind woman who could not see his deformities speaks volumes on his character. poor man. if only he had a better go at life
The saddest part is that we can still understand this today, many things have not changed and it is extraordinary how this film still speaks to such volumes even now. This is the most beautiful film to ever be made.
One of my favourite films, I love of how it shows there is nothing wrong with being disabled. As I have Autism, I am greatful to the makers of this film for expressing this message.
I saw this when it first came out and it was hypnotic... everything about it... the way it was shot, the dream sequences... The one thing that will always stick out in my memory is when all of the side show acts escaped. They all carried lanterns and walked through the woods. I tell myself that such horrible things could never happen... but they did. Lynch is a genius for bringing this stuff to film. He shows you stuff you would never want to see. One of the few directors that will actually show you unnerving images based on reality.
Not only was this the best performance of john hurt's career hands down, but in my opinion he was also one of the most underappreciated actors who ever lived. rest in peace.
From A Man For All Seasons, 10 Rillington Place, Alien, Midnight Express, Watership Down, The Plague Dogs, The Hit, The Naked Civil Servant, 1984, Contact, The Harry Potter Films, The Hellboy Films, Dogville, The Proposition, V for Vendetta, Melancholia, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Only Lovers Left Alive, Snowpiecer, Doctor Who and most recently one of the finest parts in Jackie. My favourite performance was The Elephant Man. RIP Sir John Hurt (1940-2017) A Cinematic Odyssey
Yes! I remember that 1 now! THANKS for jogging my memory. He did, as I recall a lot of commercial v/o's as well. Did a V/O for a Cult album as I recall, as John was a BIG fan!
Rest in peace Joseph Merrick. The way this man passed away is the saddest thing possible. Joseph Merrick died in his sleep when trying to sleep like everyone else in the world. He needed to sleep in a sitting position with his legs bent and his head over them to support the extra weight in his head. So one night he was going to try to sleep like everyone else, but as he layed down, one of the central veins in his neck snapped from the weight of his head which caused him to pass away. Like if you respect Joseph Merrick.
As heartbreaking and heart-wrenching as John Hurt's performance is, I can't imagine how the real John Merrick (Elephant Man) must have felt and lived...
Does anyone remember the episode of Rugrats where Chucky thought he was turning into a chicken and he yelled out, "I am not an animal! I am a human bean!"? lol
This scene breaks my heart every single time, heck this whole movie does. My heart aches for Joseph Merrick, I honestly cannot imagine anyone having to live a life filled with such mockery and hatred :( This is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen and I'd recommend it to anyone, just be prepared for tears :( The human soul is a truly remarkable thing.
I saw this in the theater at 10 years of age... I have not been able to watch it since without serious tears through the majority of the film. Films and actors like this are going fast. Thank you Mr. Hurt.
This film, well filmed, brilliantly acted and deeply sad. Lucky are those who are ''normal'' looking- to be stared at, gawked at, must be soul destroying for anyone who has the misfortune to be born with such a condition. When one sees the vanity of people who fret over having ''too small boobs'' or ''a spot'' it does put things into perspective. Society judges far too much on appearance..and probably always will.
John Merrick has to be the kindest and most compassionate character I have ever seen been portrayed in a movie. I love him so much. People judged him too quickly. This really is a perfect example of “don’t judge a book by its cover” apparently even the actor who played him couldn’t even completely play the amazing person he was in real life.
I find it still funny after all these years that a film by David Lynch is one that will make me cry every single time. There are few films that can do that for me and I say that with no ounce of pride. Crying can be incredible cathartic.
I saw this scene on tv when i was like 5. I didn't understand a word of english and i couldn't read so i had no idea what was going on. The intense music, the black & white picture, the intensity of the scene, his limping and the reveal of his face scared me to the point where i bursted out crying of fear. I had never seen a face like that and the way it was presented to me was like taken from a nightmare. Many years later when i understood english and watched the movie in it's entirety, it almost had me in tears for a completly different reason.
im 35 years old and i saw this movie when i was very young..i recall it making me cry several times because it was just so sad..I think the way it was filmed was beautiful especially the black and white..and no one can fault john gielgud and anthony hopkins because they are brilliant..wonderful yet sad movie, thank you for sharing it with us. My dad let us watch this film when we was very young, probably about 8.
Fantastic performances from John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins.
Anthony Hopkins looks so damn handsome in this movie.
I felt this movie deserved more accolades than it got

David Lynch is a genius.
I'm a grown man, but whenever I see this scene it makes me cry like a baby.
How can a movie be so sad, tragic and beautiful at the same time?
Thank you, Mr. Lynch. I'm grateful and honored for you bring to us this masterpiece.
I actually didn't cry but I feel very very sad about this scene. I really want to hug him. He is more beautiful on the inside than most people. I'm terrified about this. It hurts in my heart to see this.
This scene hurt me too..Each time i hear Joseph,i cannot stop crying ,my tears come to my eyes..it is so sad..so cruel!
Possibly one of the greatest scenes of all time in film, and will always be.
Such a powerful and heart-wrenching film. I can never hold back tears when I watch.
Jeremy, The Innovator i strongly agree. I saw the film about two years ago (I also watched it before then) and this scene gets to me everytime. However said it is I just can't stop watching it because of John Hurt's powerful performance. In other words I just love to torture myself.
RIP David Lynch
I am 51 years old and have seen a hell of a lot of movies but this scene is by far my favourite scene of ANY movie I have seen so far!!! He finally stands up for his personal dignity and doesn't care what anybody thinks anymore. My wife is a teacher and I constantly bug her to get the Board of Education to make this movie mandatory watching for anti-bullying initiatives.
The actor in the bowler hat with the handle-bar mustache does such a great job in this scene without even having a line. Reacting with shock and then empathy. Such a great scene
I want to give him a hug, really badly. This scene makes me so very sad, every time.
@Morganna you're such a beautiful woman. I truly wish your happiness, because that's what you deserve. God bless ya!
@@Fontenelle2307 Aw thank you! God bless you too
A amazing quote for an freaking amazing and inspiring movie...
It's a shame movies like this aren't produced nowadays...
John Merrick...A hero indeed.
I feel so bad for john merrick. I cried for 3 hours
Best movie ever 😢and heartbreaking he taught us what means to be human

I saw this when I was only 14 year old. Alone. On TV. This was before the internet was a thing. I didn't know this was one of the stand-out iconic scenes of this film. Still... I remember crying for him, and feeling the power of this scene. Two things happened that day. I gained a new appreciation for my fellow human beans, and I fell in love with cinema.
Kid - "Mr, why's your head so big?"
Merrick - "all the better for headbutting you with you little shit!"
I.would.Louie.to.jump.on.the.monsters.head.I.would.louve.to.beat. him.up.the.freak.
"I am not an animal", one of the greatest lines in cinema history
The fact they shown us this movie when I was in primary school I was scarred and shocked, now when I watch it as a 20 year old, it brings tears to my eyes everytime, such a masterpiece of a film, RIP John hunt
This movie played on HBO when I was 7 years old. I really believe it taught me about compassion and kindness. I cried when I watched it then and I still tear-up when I watch these scenes. and I’m 51 now. The power of great filmmaking. ❤️
the fact he hid his face to not scare others, and how he dreamed of meeting a blind woman who could not see his deformities speaks volumes on his character. poor man. if only he had a better go at life
“I AM A HUMAN BEING”
Not only, Joseph. You were THE ONLY human being among those people!
This video sums up what is wrong with humanity
The saddest part is that we can still understand this today, many things have not changed and it is extraordinary how this film still speaks to such volumes even now. This is the most beautiful film to ever be made.
A heartbreaking scene that showcased John Hurt's brilliant skill as an actor. May he rest in peace.
One of the most (if not THE most) gut-wrenching, emotional scenes I've ever watched. Impossible not to cry.
One of my favourite films, I love of how it shows there is nothing wrong with being disabled. As I have Autism, I am greatful to the makers of this film for expressing this message.
I have Autistic spectrum mate and speech and language disorder but Both mild. But still a problem tho
I'm autistic too.
as someone who is both autistic and transgender this movie really hits hard, society is so cruel to those it deems ‘the other’
RIP to John Hurt. Truly one of the most brilliant actors out there. This scene is a testament to his magnificence.
"oh god, look at that" - Karl Pilkington
lmao
"Have you seen your head?"
Haha, this is why I came to this video! I love an idiot abroad!

This scene is so damn powerful and it BREAKS me that people are so disgusting and treat him like he is nothing.
i had no idea about this man until last night when i watched the movie by chance. i shed a few tears multiple times, what a powerful performance.
As heartbreaking and heart-wrenching as John Hurt's performance is, I can't imagine how the real John Merrick (Elephant Man) must have felt and lived...
RIP Lynch.

I'm crying a river in this part . We must be happy to get all the good things . Thanks god
I can't believe this movie didn't win an academy award!
An Astonishing performance by John Hurt. Breaks my heart every time x
Society judges far too much on appearance..and probably always will.
well said oakleaf
John Merrick has to be the kindest and most compassionate character I have ever seen been portrayed in a movie. I love him so much. People judged him too quickly. This really is a perfect example of “don’t judge a book by its cover” apparently even the actor who played him couldn’t even completely play the amazing person he was in real life.
Stunning scene -- you see it once and you remember it forever. You never forget it.
You can just hear the sadness in his voice.
Just listen to the pain in his voice breaking my heart. What an performance from John Hurt. I hope Mr. Merrick rest in peace !

I find it still funny after all these years that a film by David Lynch is one that will make me cry every single time. There are few films that can do that for me and I say that with no ounce of pride. Crying can be incredible cathartic.
I wanna give John a big hug and tell him how much everyone cares about him and loves him
I saw this scene on tv when i was like 5.
How didn't you know English at 5? I learnt it when I was 3
one of the most heartbreaking films of all time. david lynch is one beautiful mind.
Brilliant scene! So much emotion and tension and the music adds so perfectly to the tense build-up.
2:31 One of the most heartstring-tugging line in film history.
im 35 years old and i saw this movie when i was very young..i recall it making me cry several times because it was just so sad..I think the way it was filmed was beautiful especially the black and white..and no one can fault john gielgud and anthony hopkins because they are brilliant..wonderful yet sad movie, thank you for sharing it with us.

Fantastic scene. One of the best ever in movies along with the perfect accompanying music.
The feels. People are still hell, this reminds me so much of my life in middle school :(

Rip john hurt. You brought this amazing man back to life in a movie and you showed how people feared him but you also showed his courage, strength, and bravery. This man should have never been treated this way because of how he looked. We love you john hurt and we love you elephant man. Hope you guys can finally join together in heaven
Jesus...I cried like a baby...and I don't really cry so much :(
My dad let us watch this film when we was very young, probably about 8. I always believed it was to show us how people are still people no matter how odd they may look, and that we should always show great compassion when others shy away. This man was a gentleman, he was loved and he will always be remembered.
One of the saddest and distressing movies I've ever seen 😭
The only freaks are those chasing their prey - vile human race, some things never change ... Such a humbling film - superbly understated acting. Wonderful.
