Nice fly Tim but it is not a Booby. Booby flies have large foam eyes tied at 90° to the hook shank. Tied on a regular shank hook with a marabou tail and wing, a Booby (fished on a sinking line) will dive on the strip and rise on the pause. Depending on the size of the eyes and how heavily the fly is dressed, a Booby will shimmy back and forth on a slow, steady retrieve. Cheers!
I have to agree. Although a very nice looking fly it's not a Booby. You are right about the original fishing method of the Booby using a fast sinking line and very short leader. These days I don't know anyone who fishes a Booby like that. You are more likey to find one on the point of a washing line set up with a floating line.
@davidbenjamin5356 David, don't tell anyone, but that's exactly how I fish Boobies for Walleyes and Bass along deep weed edges and rocky ridges - it's VERY effective! I tie them 2-3 inches long with foam eyes, bucktail, some marabou, and a bit of flash.
Not a Post Fly subscriber, but, I always enjoy these tying sessions.
