I really appreciate your in-depth work here and letting us hear the intricate differences in the sound. I was at a concert this evening listening to Bria Skonberg and she was playing on these mutes and they seemed to have less resistance than other mutes I’ve heard recently. The sound was quite free. She was using the chrome plated version harmon style mute. Great job here. Thank you very much.!!
Thanks for the note, Christopher! I'm glad you found this helpful, and could pick up the differences. The chrome one is terrific, I will be doing an updated video sometime this year featuring a few other models, so I pay just A/B them all and have it feature everything. The chrome cup is one of my favorite jazz + solo mutes - really terrific.
Great demo, Josh! I’ve been wanting to check out the NEW ones compared to the 1958 Dizzy mutes I have. I will say I tried the 1990’s ones like you have and in comparison to the originals I was not impressed so I’m glad the original specs were restored! The Stubby is worth picking up and one of my next purchases. I owned one and sold it to the late Dan Miller and regretted it ever since! Sound of the harmon wasn’t bad but it seemed the copper sounded easier to play and more even particularly up high while having more volume overall. The aluminum had a lot more buzz but washed out more when going higher and wasn’t as clear. Again those 1990’s ones were thicker metal and the lacquer over the top which I’m sure impacted the BUZZ a bit.
Yeah, the stubby is also something I'm looking forward to getting/reviewing. The biggie is just filing down 70% of the cork ... then they play as they are designed.
Great video as always! I especially enjoyed the cup demo and I wish I had known about filing the corks a few years ago. I had a white Ullven cup which sounded amazing but was really out of tune and had no low range. I ended up selling it, which I now regret as it was likely just a problem of the corks being too thick!
Thanks!! Oh no - I bet filing the corks down would have fixed it all up ... but at least they are back in business so they are a lot easier to get now. What cup mute do you use these days?
I've been using a Denis Wick adjustable cup mute for 25ish years - not the most exciting or unique cup around, but it sounds good, plays in tune and evenly across the horn, and it's what most of my colleagues are also using so I'm pretty happy with it! That said your chrome plated copper cup is a real beauty....
Sounds like me ... I've been using the Denis Wick adjustable mute for 20+ years. Great mute, and everyone has got one. I bet a section of the Ullven Copper Cup mutes would sound fantastic though!
Great demo, Josh! Cup mute "closed" is definitely Dizzy-esque. Your demos are so consistent. I do wonder if you ever flub a note while playing them. :)
Thanks!! Right?! That closed cup is the sound, and of course the close shastock cup for the earlier Diz records. Lol, thanks. Oh, I certainly flub notes here and there, but I typically do more than one take for every mute. Occasionally it's one and done. Every time I switch mutes I re-tune the horn, make sure the mute is properly fitted, and then I do a couple takes of every example just to make sure I'm comfortable on the mute and that I've got a solid take for when I'm compiling them all together. I record the audio into a studio mic that's just off frame and sync it with the video in post. I don't use any EQ or processing on the demonstrations.

Great video as always Josh!
Thanks, Richie!! Happy new year!
