Oh, this is absolutely wonderful! I have never heard Sir John sing the Abschied better than this: every nuance of text, perfectly allied to musical phrasing, is perfectly weighed. What a great performer!

This part was made for Tomlinson! It would have been entirely fitting that the great man graced the boards at the Festpielhaus in Bayreuth.

Modernamente não tem , não! Os que são melhores que ele estão no passado: Hans Hotter, Friedrich Schorr, Ferdinand Frantz, George London, por exemplo. Mas nas décadas de 80 e 90, e até agora, não há melhor que ele, sobretudo no ciclo de Barenboim (Bayreuth, 1992, com direção cênica de Harry Kupfer).
