Jonathan Brown in his book "Tristan und Isolde on Record" writes:
"In act three, McIntyre gives Tristan the best Kurwenal he could ever hope to have: an alert, watchful, caring, energetic, and mighty supporter. The way he responds to Tristan's disorientation ("Wie kam ich her?") with a delicate simplicity ("Hei nun, wie du kam'st?") intensifies the tragedy of the scene immeasurably. His response to Tristan is deeply moving, most of all when he whispers his desperately pitying and pathetically joyful words when he sees Tristan is still living ("Er regt sich! Er lebt! Wie sanft er die Lippen rührt!"). Wenkoff is excellent throughout his long monologues: tough, tortured, and driven by a furious longing. Kleiber never lets up, and for a dreadful moment, it sounds as if Wenkoff won't quite get to his Isolde ("Zu ihr! Zu ihr!") as he searches desperately for light. It is a magisterial performance, better than those of Suthaus and Vinay in the 1950s. Ridderbusch arrives and pours out, generously, his grief-laden warmth to all those around him. Overall, this is as good a performance from Bayreuth as one could ever hope for-except only for the wish for a darker-toned Isolde."

"Tristan und Isolde" ("Tristan and Isolde") is an opera in three acts by Richard Wagner, with a German libretto by the composer. The libretto is based on the medieval romance "Tristan" by Gottfried von Strassburg. It was first performed at the Royal Court and National Theatre in Munich on 10th June, 1865.

Truly stunning. Its better than the DG recording with Margaret Price and that's really saying something. In live performance there is a terrific energy flowing from the stage and the orchestra with Kleiber is out of this world. Thank you RS for posting this. I will return to this until it stays with me.

Magnificent. Very good recording of an epic performance. I've been to Bayreuth and yes the sound is unlikely any other house. Kleiber is a genius in building the act. Wenkoffs Tristan is epic.

Großartig. Wenkoff und McIntyre sind sensationell und Catarina Ligendzas Stimme ist wie Honig. Dieser Livemitschnitt übertrifft Kleibers völlig überbewerteten Studio-Tristan um Welten, denn Margaret Price ist keine Isolde und Kollo und Fischer-Dieskau sind da in schlechter Form. Vielen Dank für diesen mit Liebe zum Detail erstellten Upload.

Maravillosa versión! A pesar de las limitaciones vocales de los artístas, todos cumplen dignamente sus papeles. Caterina Ligendza logra despegar en su liebestod de la mano de una dirección apasionada y cristalina. Bravo! Gracias por compartir.
.. stimmliche Einschränkungen? .. bei Wenkoff nie zu denken, eher er setzt die Note bewußt so .. .. ein richtiger - leider unterschätzer - Bühnenkünstler, vetständlich, dass CK mit ihm die Platte Aufnahme wollte und deshalb die Kollo Version so lange nicht ohne Freigabe liegen ließ..

Μεθηστικος Kleiber, R.I.P.
Must be the very best of the available Kleiber live 'Tristan' recordings. Much superior to the ragged Vienna performance in 1973, which sound badly under-rehearsed.
and the Scala one in 78 as well.
The most convincing of all modern Isoldes is arguably that of Margaret Price. She sings with Kollo as Tristan in the recording not issued until Kleiber had died. Definitely one of the loveliest modern versions.
